Spur of the Moment

Saying goodbye to James White

With all the hoopla that came with the Donaghy scandal, I failed to say goodbye to dunker extraordinaire James White. The Spurs waived White on Monday after he spent a year with the team, appearing in six games. He averaged 8.3 points and 3.3 rebounds.

Many fans had hoped White would turn into the long, athletic small forward to replace Bruce Bowen, but the expectations were too high for a player known solely for his dunking. Unfortunately, White’s game never developed, specifically his outside shot. While it was nice to envision an athletic small forward throwing down dunks and defending the other team’s best perimeter player, it was never realistic with White.

Even though White never became the player so many envisioned, he was still a great dunker and probably could have won the slam dunk contest. With that in mind, here are a few videos to remember White by.

    DT,

Please tell me you’re kidding. Please. You’re giving James White a farewell and JB gets nothing than an unceremonious bouncing for some guy named Vassilis? Have we officially moved into what the Sports Guy would term ‘Bizarro World’? This could be my final blow as an NBA fan…

    …keep up the good work.

White, we hardly knew ye. I thought he was a poor man’s Marquis Daniels. If he toughens up, he can be a rich man’s Bruce Bowen. I thought he was going to win D-League MVP next year.

    Steve,

Well, I never had hope for Butler, except that he would eat every buffet in San Antonio out of business. Face it, he was overweight and not exactly the best defender. He didn’t fit in with the Spurs and there wasn’t room in the rotation for him anyways. White at least intrigued Spurs fans, and not just because of his dunks. Physically, he was exactly what I envisioined our future small forward would be.

    Jon,

I too had hopes for White, but tried to be realistic. With a full year behind Bowen I thought he might develop into a good defender who could do the little things. Unfortunately he never really improved.
