Spur of the Moment
Barry Decides
It’s official. Brent Barry will return to the Spurs. Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic reports that Barry chose San Antonio over Phoenix.
This means that the Spurs essentially traded Francisco Elson and a first round pick for Kurt Thomas, which is an absolute steal. It also raises questions about whether the Spurs and Sonics agreed on this before the trade, but like I’ve said before, there is no proof for such allegations.
I’ll have more analysis after the Spurs-Mavs game.

It does not raise those questions. That was so ridiculous to write that just because there was the story about Stackhouse with Dallas. Classic example of a writer wishing he had a bigger story than he does. Very unprofessional.

If Jerry Stackhouse was such an idiot it wouldn’t even be an issue. This is simply a case of a waived player choosing to return to the team that traded him. Come on, he was actively listening to offers from the other teams after being waived, unlike Stackhouse who flat out let everyone know the plan before he was even traded.

Coro is absolutely right. All the ties between Spurs and Sonics with coach PJ, and also front office members who are former Spurs employees. Resigning w/Spurs, and delaying all the other teams as long as possible to ruin their chances of getting someone else before the deadline. It sounds like Popovich orchestrated this one. He’s right there with Belicheat as far as unethical dealings. Kicking players in the achilles and groin purposely. Pop needs to be called out.

Rob,
Thanks for the comment. I’m sorry that you feel that way, but I think it does raise the question. I don’t think there was any agreement ahead of time, but when you consider that the Sonics GM, Presti, got his start in San Antonio, I think the question is relevant.
Like I said, I don’t think there was an agreement. I wasn’t suggesting that there was. I just think that many fans will wonder, which is fair in my opinion.

John,
I think questions would be raised even if Stackhouse hadn’t been an idiot. Based on the relationships between current Sonics officials and the Spurs, people would have asked. It’s natural to wonder. I believe that Barry thought long and hard about the decision and listened to all offers. We know that he is a good actor (HEB commercials), but I don’t think he is good enough to fool NBA General Managers into offering him a contract.

Steve,
I don’t think you completely understood my point. I said the question will be raised, never that I thought an agreement was actually made. We have no proof of that actually happening, just pure speculation. When Pop comes forward and says ‘yes, we did all this ahead of time’, then people will have something to complain about.
Also, when has Pop cheated? Is he training his Bowen to kick players in the Achilles and groin? Once again, there is no proof of such things, just fans and players whining. I remember Jason Terry punching Michael Finley in the groin in 2006, do you think Avery Johnson teaches him that? I don’t. I also have no reason to think Pop teaches his players to cheat.

Steve and the write are way off mark. If anything, you all have not learned that the Spurs franchise is a first class organization and these type of antics are not typical. Barry seriously considered the Suns as well as other offers. All of you are trying to make something out of nothing. There was NO collusion, unlike the classless Mavericks organization.

Jennifer,
I agree that the Spurs are a first class organization and that there was no collusion. However, I understand why people would wonder just based on the involvement of the Sonics.

As a spurs fan, I am very glad that Barry is coming back. I agree that there are going to be some raised eyebrows about whether it was arranged ahead of the trade, but we won’t ever know as I very seriously doubt if anybody would say anything. This is also far from the biggest thing that has happened as far as trades or any type of collusion. Given his situation, I always expected that Barry would come back given he was released by the Sonics (who really didn’t need his services).
The spurs are the most logical place for him to come back and hopefully help to win another ring.
This news plus the exiting win over the Mavs, a great evening to be a spurs fan.

Spurs, First class? I think not. Pop and the Spurs are the dirtiest franchise in the NBA. I wouldn’t put any of the forementioned assumptions past them one bit. The difference in the Spurs and Mavs situations is, much like the Mafia, the Spurs know how to keep hush on these types of things.

Scott,
I disagree. If you want to call Bruce Bowen dirty, that’s fine. I’ll even give you Robert Horry, even though that is based on one play out of his time with the Spurs. But to classify the entire organization is dirty is false. What proof is there that they are dirty? Nobody has ever been able to show to me how the Spurs are a dirty, cheating, lying organization. It’s all assumptions.
