Too Late To Trade KG? Nope

Now that the draft has come and gone, the KG rumors have cooled off, with the exception of that recent Golden State rumor.

As we head into free agency, the Wolves need to make a choice.  Do they add players for the MLE and LLE, trade Ricky Davis, and keep KG?  Or do they deal KG, even though the current offers may not be as attractive as the pre-draft offers?

I’m pretty sure that no offer the Wolves get will be as appealing as the pre-draft Celtics or Atlanta scenarios.  But still, it makes sense to deal The Big Ticket over the summer.

First of all, I like the Warriors deal…I’d be very happy to see the Wolves add Brandan Wright, Monta Ellis, and another piece or two from Golden State.  That would definitely jumpstart the youth movement in Minnesota.  Unfortunately, KG needs to approve the deal, and his desire to play for Golden State is questionable, at best.

If Chris Mullin can convince KG to play in Oakland, though, the Wolves should absolutely pull the trigger on the deal.

Second, Boston could still make a good offer for Kevin.  How about this: Al Jefferson, Theo Ratliff, and Gerald Green, plus next year’s Celtics pick, as well as the future first rounder the Wolves dealed to Boston.

With KG, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen, the Celtics would become instant contenders.  True, they’re already in the playoff hunt in the East with Allen and Pierce, but adding KG would take them to the next level.

Here’s why the Wolves do it: Jefferson is a bright young player who is already making a big impact.  Theo Ratliff’s expiring contract gives us the chance to make a big signing in the summer of 2008, and adding Gerald Green would continue a much-needed youth movement with the Wolves.

Again, if I’m dealing Garnett, I want to accomplish two things: 1) Add young talent to the team, and 2) Add expiring contract(s).  The Wolves could accomplish both of those by dealing with the Celtics.

It’s not too late to trade KG.  The rumors may have cooled down a bit, but scenarios with the Warriors and Celtics still exist where the Wolves could start an effective rebuilding process by dealing KG.

It’s not like KG has a no-trade clause. He has to approve of nothing. The Wolves need to get the best deal, and Garnett’s past loyalty isn’t going to stop them from sending him to a team he doesn’t care for. Thats the business of the NBA. Only Kobe gets no-trade clauses in his contract.

True, but he can opt out after next season, so he can say…”if you trade me to Team A, then I’ll opt out.” That’s what he did with Boston…the Wolves agreed in principle to a KG deal with Boston, but KG nixed it by saying he’d opt out after next season if he was dealt to the Celts.

I doubt he’d really do that. He’d be missing out on quite a bit of cash by opting out. So maybe Danny Ainge should have considered it a bluff on KG’s part.

Nonetheless, KG can still make those threats.

I think he would pull the trigger on the opt out if the Wolves dealt him to Boston. Also, I think the real point here is that Kevin McHale missed the boat on trading KG not in the time period before the draft, but actually last summer. Keep in mind, according to a number of published reports the Wolves turned down an offer of Luol Deng, Tyson Chandler, and the #2 pick in last year’s draft. Now the Bulls don’t have the big money chip (Chandler) to get Garnett, and the Wolves window of opportunity has closed. At this point they are not going to get anything more than fifty cents on the dollar for KG.

Agreed, but they still need to deal him this summer…they’ve missed tons of chances already, and KG’s trade value will never be any higher than it is now. I’d hate to see KG walk after next year, and have the Wolves get nothing in return for him. Yeah, they could have got a lot more in the past, but I’d be happy with either the Celtics or Warriors deal.

[…] – man, over the weekend while playing pickup, this guy totally killed Kevin Garnett by saying the Wolfs are so horrible because of him and him alone. Surely, I said, this guy called Kevin McHale has some hand in a terrible team right? No way, KG is a loser, not a winner, replies pickup guy. Then I spent the next 10 mins crying and questioning my faith in the Ticket… ALL THAT TO SAY, he could be still traded, and some possibilities here | Wolves Watch […]

I understand why you like the proposed trade with the Celtics - if I were a Minny fan I’d love it.

But because I’m a Celtics fan I hate it. It’s just too much to give up for KG.

Of course, there’s no predicting what the Danny will do, so who knows.

Cs are not giving both AJ and Green for KG
    Just too much
Maybe Theos contract, GG or AJ, , filler and a Pick and that has to do it

Adding Ray Allen to the Celtics puts them in the hunt category for what? Best in the class of “Teams that marginally improved by adding a superstar”? They (Pierce and Allen) play the same position and do roughly the same thing on the floor. I’m not sure how well that is going to work out for them.

out of the rumored trades.. id much rather send KG to GS for brandan wright, monta ellis, and another piece or two. wright is young and has nice upside..

put foye, ellis, brewer, wright, and smith in the lineup. (what about mccants)
we will be like charlotte and win a few games. But next year we will have $$ to sign free agents, we also will have a first round pick, which should be our lottery pick because we will finish in the bottom 3-5 teams in the league ( granted the ping pong balls play out) We build with young pieces and we can then trade some young talent and get a veteran in the coming year (2-3 years from now)

with ellis foye brewer wright smith mccants and a First round lottery pick next year, the wolves will be looking good for the future

Jeramey- I understand your point, but I still think a team with Pierce and Allen is a playoff team in the East, expecially as their young talent continues to develop. But dude, I’m by no means a great Boston Celtics mind…so don’t go too hard on me =)

All I’m saying is that another piece is needed in Boston to take them to the next level, and that piece could be KG.
