Cavalier Commentary: Cavs Work Out Daniels, Hickson Is A Starter…For Now
Cavs Looking To Sign Daniels?
According to HOOPSWORLD, it looks like the Cavs might be signing point guard Antonio Daniels sooner rather than later.
Antonio Daniels worked out for the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday and could reach an agreement with the team in coming days, a source close to the situation tells HOOPSWORLD. Cleveland has shown interest in Daniels since he was waived by the Minnesota Timberwolves several weeks ago.Daniels’ top choice remains the Cavaliers and he’s awaiting an offer from the team before working out for other suitors. Cleveland has also asked Daniels’ camp not to speak with other teams suggesting that an agreement between the two sides could come shortly.
At first, Daniels was hesitant to workout for individual teams but he’s itching to play again and wants to speed along the free agency process. He has significant interest from two other teams, including one other contender, but will only consider those options if the talks with Cleveland break down.
The Cavaliers are enticing to Daniels because of his desire to play for a contender and return to his home state of Ohio where he was raised and starred at Bowling Green State University.
Brian Windhorst reported on Sunday that while the Cavs have interest in Daniels and were close to signing him at one point in time, nothing was close as of the last few days.
I find it suspicious that all of a sudden the Cavs would sign Daniels if they were just were reportedly not interested in signing him. As of right now, Daniels would be on the end of the bench. Why would the Cavs all of a sudden be in hot pursuit of someone to potentially put on the inactive list? Something might be going on. I don’t know what but something just might be happening. It could be good and it could be bad.
JJ Hickson Inserted Into Starting Lineup
In other news, JJ Hickson looks to be a starter for the time being.
Cavs coach Mike Brown said after practice Sunday at Cleveland Clinic Courts that J.J. Hickson would remain in the starting lineup at power forward.“I’m going to continue messing around with it,” Brown said. “Something may change again. My starting lineup is not set.”
Mike Brown made an interesting move inserting JJ into the starting lineup against the Knicks on Friday and it may not be a bad idea. The Cavs need some athleticism up front and giving some minutes to JJ is a good idea. Putting him next to LeBron and Shaq could certainly be a recipe for success. The key for Hickson will be to play smart, play hard and hit jumpers. If he does those things, he’ll likely stay in the starting lineup.
What does this mean for Varejao? Nothing really. It wasn’t that Varejao was playing bad, it’s just that he’s a not a good fit next to Shaq. He’s a better fit off the bench playing with Ilgauskas. He will still get his minutes.
Why LeBron Will Stay
SI.com’s Ian Thomsen has a nice article on why LeBron will stay with the Cavaliers.
