Bulls Sign SG Pargo

On the first day when free agents could sign contracts, the Chicago Bulls reportedly signed prodigal son Jannero Pargo for one year worth roughly $2 million. Pargo played from 2003 to 2006 with the Bulls, and spent last season in Europe after a successful spell in New Orleans. Pargo will add offense off the bench, and he can play both the the point and shooting guard positions. I am pleased that the Bulls signed a proven backup for Salmons for a reasonable price, and I think this move is a good start to the offseason for the Bulls.

Early Central Division Preview: Detroit Pistons

With teams scrambling to sign free agents now that they have become eligible to sign with new teams, the off-season is now in full swing. After previously covering the Bucks and Pacers, I will now move on to take a look at the Detroit Pistons, who finished right behind the Chicago Bulls last season both in the division and the Eastern Conference. This coming season, however, the Pistons will look quite different, with a new coach and a revamped roster.

All signs point to it. The Chicago
Bulls have been stockpiling young, cheap players the past couple
seasons. They have several expiring contracts on the roster and have
yet to move them. The front office drafted two power forwards, which
likely spells the end of Tyrus Thomas' tenure as a Bull. The team is
comprised mostly of recent draft picks (7 players have three years or
less experience entering the upcoming season). The front office has
used made thinly veiled references to it, mentioning the "process"
and "learning curve" that will require patience and time. Most
recently, we let our top scorer from last year walk. Yep, the signs
all lead to one thing.

The Chicago Bulls are rebuilding.

I know, the R word is a dirty, vile,
horrible label to put on a team, and this team isn't completely
hopeless just yet. The front office could still pull off some huge
deal to bring in a star to complement the young nucleus of Derrick
Rose, Joakim Noah, and Luol Deng (his massive, long-term contract
means he's a Bull for at least another two years, so we may as well
accept him as our SF for the forseeable future). But, in all honesty,
who can the Bulls get? More importantly, can the Bulls offer a
package for a star that no other team can top? I think not.

Like I already mentioned, the writing
has been on the wall for longer than we may like to believe here in
the Chicagoland area. Since the Michael Jordan dynasty ended in the
90's, the Bulls have never been a legitimate contender, and whenever
they got close, the front office made the wrong move at the crucial
moment. Elton Brand was let go, only to bring in Tyson Chandler. When
Hinrich, Deng, and Gordon stunned the NBA by shutting down Dwyane
Wade in the playoffs and exceeding everyone's expectations, the Bulls
spent their money on retaining Kirk Hinrich for the long haul and
going balls-out for Ben Wallace. When that failed, and the Bulls had
to decide to re-sign Gordon and/or Deng, they chose Deng, who has
since been an oft-injured, scarcely productive flop.

Now, the Bulls are mired in mediocrity,
with no substantial cap space for this season and little hope for
landing a star next offseason. Sure, there are plenty of stars who
will potentially hit the market in 2010, but why would they come to
Chicago? Most of the top potential free agents seems to be winners,
who would obviously like to play for contenders. Cleveland will
probably bring back LeBron, and the rest of the top talent will
likely end up with Boston, Orlando, Cleveland, Los Angeles, or
another viable contender (perhaps Denver). So if we don't land a star
now, and if that failure persists in 2010, we'll have loads of cap
space to either waste on undeserving talent or to rebuild.

So if we rebuild, what does that mean?
Well, the two best examples from recent memory are the Boston Celtics
and the Oklahoma City Thunder. Both teams began with one star player
(Paul Pierce and Kevin Durant, respectively), and they had to wait to
slowly gather the right pieces to complement their stars. In the
meantime, they cleared cap space, gutted their rosters, and collected
a combination of expiring contracts and young players on rookie
contracts. They then let the kids play, keeping the ones who thrived
and letting go of those that didn't.

After that step is where the two teams
too different approaches. The Celtics took note of two teams in
miserable positions (the Timberwolves and, ironically enough the
SuperSonics, who have since become the Thunder), realized that they
were both ready to rebuild, and decided to throw all their efforts
and cap space into getting a star from each team (Kevin Garnett and
Ray Allen, respectively). The all-or-nothing approach could have
potentially doomed this team and forced them to start over yet again,
but they won a championship the very next season, justifying their
huge gamble.

The Thunder have yet to take that
massive gamble, instead preferring to continue giving youngsters the
opportunity to prove themselves. Jeff Green and Russell Westbrook
seem to have worked their way into the nucleus alongside Durant, and
new draftee James Harden will get the chance to join that core in the
future. The Thunder appear willing to keep relying on draft picks to
strengthen their team, and, though it has taken time, it has been
working, slowly but surely. The team is clearly better than they were
two years back when Durant began his career, and they still have
plenty of cap space should they decide to take a gamble.

The Thunder's approach is much slower,
and it mirrors the approach the Bulls themselves took after the MJ
dynasty ended. Unfortunately, the "stars" the Bulls decided to
build around were Hinrich and Deng, and Reinsdorf was gave them too
much money and too many years to leave room for more talent, and his
judgment leaves the team trapped in the middle of the conference.
Luckily we have a true young star in Rose now, and we have already
found a good, young complement for him in Noah.

The Bulls could, of course, pull off a
move for some sort of temporary upgrade to try to contend next year,
as Milwaukee did with Richard Jefferson last year. However, the Bucks
found that their gamble was little more than a stall, getting them
nothing more than assurance that they wouldn't get embarrassed
throughout the season. The Bucks have since let Jefferson go,
accepting their need to rebuild and preparing for a potentially long
and painful period of trial and error to get back on track. Unless
the Bulls pull off the miracle move and bring in a savior along the
lines of Bosh, Wade, or Michael Redd (and I have little faith in any
of these things happening), then, I have to grimace and grudgingly
admit what is appearing more and more like the inevitable: the Bulls
will have to rebuild. I hope we find that miracle cure, but to expect it would be naive. This team is in trouble, and the front office is faced with the decision to make one last gamble, or to prepare for the long and thankless task of rebuilding.

2009 Offseason Whirlwind Continued

All right. The whirlwind offseason continues. These are just verbal deals and they can't officially sign until July 8. People might still pull a Carlos Boozer. Anyway...

***Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva to Detroit***
The signing of Ben Gordon, I think, effectively ends Richard Hamilton's stint as a Piston. I don't know what to make of this team as everyone seems to be going their separate ways. Rasheed Wallace is going somewhere for sure and Tayshaun Prince seems to be on the trading block.

As for Charlie Villanueva, he's a great scoring option... but it's really hard to gauge this team until the offseason is over. Plus they still don't have a coach.

***Marcin Gortat to Dallas***
Erick Dampier seems to be on his way out... and Gortat earned his contract by playing well in the postseason. I guess, in the meantime, Dallas is just hoping that they don't get the Jerome James effect here (play well in the playoffs and then be an absolute bust after the huge contract signing). But they do get some depth in the frontline, if nothing else.

***Ron Artest to the L.A. Lakers***
Wow.

I've heard all the concerns already. He's not going to fit in the triangle. He'll hold on to the ball too long. Kobe and Artest don't get along, blah blah blah.

Remember when Dennis Rodman went to the Chicago Bulls? Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen supposedly wouldn't get along with Rodman, right? Since he was part of the Bad Boys? Well, those Bulls turned out some of the greatest teams in NBA history. Rodman respected the hell out of Jordan, Pippen, and Phil Jackson. I mean, for Christ's sake, they're all basketball players. Artest is going to be asked to play basketball, not rhythmic gymnastics. He'll be fine.

Well, same case here. Artest respects the hell out of Kobe Bryant. He also goes way back with Lamar Odom (if re-signed). And Phil is coaching this team. In the end, it should be fine. And I think this is an upgrade over Trevor Ariza. If Artest has his head in place, that is. Ron seemed like a Top 10 player in the league before that infamous brawl at the Palace. I don't think Trevor Ariza can get to that level.

***Trevor Ariza to Houston***
He lost. That's all I have to say.

Laker fans SHOULD be excited but that doesn't mean it's a title win for L.A. Every top team is stacking up at the moment. And Dwyane Wade and Steve Nash are probably smashing furniture at their homes this minute.

MORE OFFSEASON COVERAGE

Today's Rumors and More: A Run-Through

NEW RUMOR: Gary Tanguay reporting from Twitter -- Garnett, Danny Ainge, and Wyc Grousbeck will all make the trek to Michigan to meet with Rasheed Wallace. It's unknown whether or not Paul and Ray make the trip too. If they do, then I'd say Ray Allen will be a Celtic next year. Why would the Celtics bring him along if they were planning on trading him anyway?

Cavs very interested in Artest, Ariza.

According to several league sources, the Cavs are attempting to land Houston Rockets free-agent forward Ron Artest,
and the pitch included a meeting with LeBron James on Tuesday night in
Los Angeles as both were in Southern California for various events.

In addition, a league source indicated the team is trying to attract Los Angeles Lakers swingman Trevor Ariza, who appears to be disgruntled with the Lakers' early attempts to re-sign him.

Ariza's agent, David Lee, told the Riverside, Calif.,
Press-Enterprise Wednesday, "I think I'm being optimistic when I say
it's not going anywhere." He added that Ariza might be ready to sign
elsewhere.

ESPN reported Ariza had been in contact with the Cavs coaching staff.

Both players are unrestricted free agents and are
being courted by several teams. Without a sign-and-trade deal, the most
the Cavs could sign a player to is a salary starting at around $5.6
million with their midlevel exception. Artest made $7.4 million last
season, Ariza $3.1 million.

Artest is believed to prefer to play for a championship contender
and is thought to be considering the Lakers and Celtics in addition to
the Cavs. With the Rockets facing the uncertain injury status of stars Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady, it is unclear how hard they will try to push to re-sign Artest.

The Rockets have had interest in Cavs free agent Anderson Varejao
in the past, which opens up some possibilities of a sign-and-trade
scenario. The Cavs, however, have said they want to re-sign Varejao.

Insight: This scenario has been discussed by both sides for quite some time now. The Cavs need a guy to take the load off LeBron on defense, and take on the role of guarding guys like Paul Pierce, Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant, Hedo Turkoglu, Vince Carter, and Paul Pierce. With a starting line-up of Mo Williams, Ron Artest, LeBron James, a free agent/Anderson Varejao, and Shaq, they'd impose both a threat on defense and on offense.

However, what catches my eye is "Artest is believed to prefer to play for a championship contender
and is thought to be considering the Lakers and Celtics in addition to
the Cavs." The Celtics too, need a player who can share some of the burden with their star small forward, Paul Pierce, on defense and offense. If the Danny Ainge can steal Artest away, we'd be looking at a more impressive Celtics team than we've ever seen since Garnett arrived in Boston.

With the vast improvement of Glen Davis, -- who seems to be leaning more towards coming back to the C's after they made a qualifying offer to him -- Rajon Rondo, and Kendrick Perkins, the Celtics have a whole new look. Ainge may look to make a big splash this year to give the team a revamped roster heading into 2009-10.

However, if the C's do manage to work something out with Artest, I doubt they'd make a move for Rasheed Wallace. While a big man is a team need, I'm hoping Artest would take less money in exchange for a better shot at the title, as the C's would then have the opportunity to sign a solid big man in the free agent market.

Trevor Ariza has also been rumored to go to the Celtics, along with teams such as the Cavs and Lakers. I'm not sure why he wouldn't return to LA, as he just won a title with them, but then again, the more effective players leaving the Lakers the better. Ariza offers some flexibility in terms of positions and roles. He is able to come off the bench and start, and is capable of playing both the small forward position and shooting guard.

It's a controversial rumor for sure. All I know is that whatever team succeeds in bidding for one of the two players automatically becomes favorites for the championship.

Celtics still looking hard at Rasheed Wallace.

The Celtics' interest in Wallace is
not for the long term, though. Wallace, 34, might be the most
intriguing of free agent candidates, his relationship with Celtics
forward Kevin Garnett a possible advantage.

Strickland confirmed the Celtics' contact with Wallace with a text message: "The interest is mutual.''

Asked
if Wallace, who earned $13 million with the Pistons last season, could
join the Celtics as a mid-level exception, Strickland said: "We will
see how things work out.''

Charlotte, Cleveland, Orlando, and San Antonio have also shown interest in Wallace.

Ainge
said he did not contact any players directly, nor has he made contract
offers. Ainge said he has been on the receiving end of many more
inquiries from agents in recent days than he has proferred.

"We'll
just continue to stay in contact with free agents to see if there is
something we can do,'' Ainge said. "That could take some time. Free
agents are talking to several teams. I don't anticipate anything
dramatic happening any time soon. We have plenty of time left.

"We
have an interest in a lot of free agents, on different levels. We have
different needs. I think everybody's trying to get a feel to where the
market is. I think a lot of players start on July 1st with big dollar
signs in their eyes, and then some of them get it, and some of them
don't. And some of them come looking for anything later in the summer.

Insight: Danny Ainge is one tricky fella. Rasheed Wallace, Ron Artest, and Trevor Ariza are all on the Celtics radar among others. They need a big man, and a guy to back up Paul Pierce. But wait! They want to get Bill Walker some minutes as well. But, if they don't sign a free agent to back up Pierce and make Walker the second string small forward, we can't be sure that Walker will come through. After all, he didn't get too many minutes in his first year.

I can only tell you guys one thing I'm 100% positive about: Danny Ainge sure brews up a lot of questions.

Chris Broussard is telling us on ESPN that Rip Hamilton will not be traded by the Pistons, Avery Johnson most targeted to replace vacant coaching position.

Insight: Interesting. Detroit feels that a backcourt of Stuckey, Gordon, and Rip Hamilton could be one explosive scoring machine. They'd have Gordon coming off the bench, something that he did for some time when playing for Chicago.

Avery Johnson is a primary target for the Pistons in their search for a new coach, as they fired Michael Curry just days ago. It has also been reported that Bill Laimbeer is not a candidate. Surprise, surprise.

Clippers sending Zach Randolph to the Grizz.

The team [the Clips] agreed to trade power forward Zach Randolph to the Memphis Grizzlies for swingman Quentin Richardson, sources told ESPN.com's Chad Ford. The deal was first reported by the Los Angeles Times.

The trade can't be finalized until the league establishes the salary cap July 8 and lifts the moratorium on player movement.

Insight: Zach Randolph is on the move again, this time to the Grizz. That's it. It's final. Chris Wallace is officially one of the league's worst executives. On a team which includes Hakim Warrick, Rudy Gay, Mike Conley Jr., and Marc Gasol, why the heck would you want to trade for Zach Randolph?

I understand that they get rid of another locker room cancer in return for Randolph, Quentin Richardson, but after Randolph's stint with the Clippers, I'm convinced he won't find a city he can truly call home. He's just too much of a loudmouth -- loves to get involved in altercations, loves to make a fuss.

Is that really the direction Memphis is heading?

Uh Oh, The Bulls Are In Trouble

Moments ago, Yahoo!'s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Detroit Pistons have agreed in principle to sign free agent shooting guard Ben Gordon. Bulls fans, we can now commence the panicking.

Gordon led the team last season with 20.7 points, and his offense was a huge reason why the Bulls put up such a valiant fight against the Celtics in the playoffs. His clutch scoring was unmatched on the Bulls, as he averaged 36.3 points per 48 minutes in situations with 5 or less minutes left in the game and a score difference of 5 or less points. He also had a sweet cajones dance that will be sorely missed.

Of course, there will be plenty of folks who will argue that Gordon is a one-trick pony, a one-dimensional player who excels in one area and provides anywhere from adequate to poor production in all other areas. This may be true, but that one dimension that he happens to possess is scoring, and you can't win without scoring more than the other team. Moreover, he scores consistently and in a number of ways. Short range, long range, free throws, wide open and with hands swarming his grill, BG finds ways to score night in and night out, and few players in the league can be trusted to make the vital shot with the game on the line.

I'm not saying that this will automatically plunge the Bulls into the abyss of the bottom rungs of the Eastern Conference with the dregs of the NBA society, but the Bulls have to do something to lessen the impact of Gordon's departure. As it stands, we now have no go-to scorer with games on the line, and Vinny Del Negro's crunch time playbook consists of doodles of Transformers and a sticky note reminding him to let one player do his best to take on the other team's five with the game on the line. We had Gordon to take on that thankless job last year, and he did it successfully at an alrming rate. John Salmons was asked to try his hand at that role, and he did respectably, but, unless VDN learns some actual strategy that the team can use late in close games, we're going to need someone who can score at will.

Maybe I'm naive, but I do think the Bulls have the means to make up for the loss of Gordon. We have a good mix of expiring contracts, young potential, and intriguing talent to make some moves, and I'm in favor of focusing our efforts on landing either Toronto's Chris Bosh or Milwaukee's Michael Redd.

Trying for Bosh has been argued to death in Chicago's fan circles (mention Bosh on Blog-a-Bull and prepare for a deluge of comments), but Brad Miller, Tyrus Thomas, and James Johnson/Taj Gibson/future 1st rounder for Bosh and Marcus Banks might be feasible. We get our man, a proven superstar with post presence and athleticism, and the Raptors get rid of Banks' lousy contract while getting the serviceable Miller and the freakishly athletic Thomas (the numbers work here, with the Johnson/Gibson/1st rounder part excluded). Miller would replace Bosh's rebounding and some of his offense, and his contract would expire after the season, freeing up cap space for 2010. Thomas could thrive in a new environment, and, at 23, his highly touted potential is still there. Bosh can leave in 2010, so the Raptors would be wise to at least explore what they can get for him now.

Redd can also walk in 2010 with his early termination option, and, since the Bucks seem to be slashing payroll (refusing to offer Charlie Villanueva a qualifying offer and trading Richard Jefferson for Bruce Bowen and cap space) and starting from scratch, they might be open to moving him. Offering Miller and Thomas (and maybe a future pick) once again would work financially, and Miller and Salmons would also work, provided we took someone else like Damon Jones or Dan Gadzuric to match salaries. Milwaukee could use Miller to back up Bogut or replace Charlie V for a year, then clear cap space the next season, and Salmons would be a direct replacement for Redd (or they can try their luck playing the "Tyrus Has Potential" game). The Bulls would be in need of a backup center in either case, but we would at least get the scorer we need (and an upgrade over Gordon in all other areas) and be better off for it.

At any rate, I hope I've made my point after all this ranting. Gordon is pretty much gone, and Bulls fans have reason to worry. The front office needs to move fast to bring in big talent, or Chicago could find themselves duking it out with the Timberwolves and the rest of the league's trash for lucky lotto balls in 2010.

(Photo from Bulls.com)

Early Central Division Preview: Indiana Pacers

My fellow Chicago Bulls fans and I need to know our division rivals ahead of the upcoming season, and I have decided to make that happen sooner rather than later. Part 2 of my extremely early look at the Central Division is here, and, after examining the Milwaukee Bucks, I'll now move on to the Indiana Pacers. Look for a preview of the Pistons next, followed by the Cavaliers and Bulls, respectively.

Strengths:
SF Danny Granger is a legitimate franchise player, with great range,
the ability to score in multiple ways, and very efficient overall
play on both ends of the court (21.8 PER, +9.3 PER difference against opposing
SF's). This franchise will be built around Granger, and, if he
continues to improve at the alarming rate he has shown over the past
few seasons, he will join the elite company of the league's very best
sooner rather than later. When G-F Mike Dunleavy is healthy, he's
also a good sharpshooter, but he was only able to play in 18 games
last season. PF Troy Murphy is coming off a career year, in which he
averaged 15.1 point and 12.5 boards per 36 minutes, and he has the
ability to stretch the defense with his range. Murphy also led the
league in defensive rebound percentage at 32%. Hansbrough should be
able to crash the boards off the bench, and his hustle will benefit
the team for 15-20 minutes per game. I'm also a huge fan of Jarrett
Jack, who is an excellent backup PG thanks to his great work ethic
and high basketball IQ (the Pacers are expected to re-sign him soon). Despite the lack of national television
coverage, this team plays exciting basketball day in and day out,
making them very entertaining to watch.

Weaknesses:
After Granger, the talent drop-off is tremendous. Murphy had an
excellent year, but, at 29 years old, he is probably at his peak.
Dunleavy can score, but he really should be a third or fourth option,
not the second, as he is for the current Pacers group. The point
guard situation remains a mystery, with disgruntled Jamaal Tinsley
eating up over $7 million in cap space without playing, and the front
office losing (or perhaps they have already lost) patience with
oft-injured T.J. Ford. Despite some exciting play, this team finished
as a lottery team last season, mostly because of lousy point guards
and below average play at all positions except small forward. In
fact, the PER difference by position was negative for all positions
except small forward, and the PER ranking per position was in the
bottom half for all positions except - you guessed it - small
forward (where the Pacers ranked 6th). When 4 out of 5 positions are
below the league average, and the team is dealing with off-court
dramas like Tinsley's contract dilemma, success is simply out of the
question. The fact that they ended up 9th in the East just
proves how lousy the East was after the top 3 or 4 teams. Basically,
this team just didn't have enough talent to compete beyond a low
playoff seed, and the injuries (especially to Dunleavy, who is still
out indefinitely) killed off that hope.

Outlook: Unless
this team makes some smart moves in the off-season, they will remain
a mediocre team. I do believe that, if they stay healthy, they could
overtake the Pistons in the East, and, if they can finally rid
themselves of Tinsley and solve their point guard issues, this team
will finish with a better record than last year. However, they need
much-improved production at point guard, shooting guard, and center
to compete next season, or else they are doomed once again to
mediocrity.

Prediction:
39-43, 4th in Central Division, 9th in East

I wonder if it gets embedded in you when you're already at the game while you're not even born. That seems to be the case for the talented and beautiful Stephanie K. Stephanie K is not only a huge fan of the NBA but also an aspiring singer. We talked about the NBA, her beloved Detroit Pistons, and a bit about her singing as well. I guess she didn't take me seriously when I offered to do a duet! Dammit.

And right before I was going to put up this entry, we got breaking news that Michael Curry was fired as head coach of her beloved Pistons. So at the very last minute, I got Stephanie's reaction on that as well.

Yeah, my font is in purple... and her font is in blue.

Dear Stephanie,

It's my fault for not E-Mailing you sooner about this but I'll admit that it's been a pretty awesome NBA week. I was stoked that the Lakers won the title, yes, but, man, I can't wait for the title defense.

Anyway, I know you root for them Pistons. And I know from your site that you're a huge Chauncey Billups fan. So do you now also root for the Denver Nuggets? They had one hell of a playoff run and I don't see any reason why they can't do this again next year.

So have you lived in Michigan all your life? And I take it you grew up watching the Pistons? Tell me how you got into it and tell me your huge NBA fandom. Because you told me on Twitter that you are like... the biggest fan ever. And your boys beat the Lakers in '04. Is that your favorite NBA moment ever?

Also... I'd like to get your thoughts on all the trades that have gone down... and how do you think the Pistons are going to do next season. Give me some of that NBA knowledge, girlfriend!

By the way, you are an outstanding singer. I saw the vid where you sang the national anthem at The Palace of Auburn Hills. I hope you continue to go places with your voice. I love your song, It's You. Maybe you can write me a song sometime. Or maybe we can do a duet together! Yeah!

See? I pay attention!

Rey-Rey

I'll make love to you! Like you want me to...

...uhhh, okay. Moving on to her reply...

To start, I'm not ashamed to admit that I have gotten into many intense verbal battles over the years defending my beloved Pistons in bars, sports books, arenas, etc. Bad, great, terrible (see: the teal colors era), they will always be my favorite team. I'm a hometown girl and have been attending games (front row season tickets) since I resided in my mother's womb. And that's not a joke...

This year was a tough one to swallow. After 6 straight conference finals appearances, a first round sweeping was absolutely devastating. Chauncey Billups, our captain, leader and MVP during our championship (and then some), has been MY MVP since his days at Colorado. I was thrilled to see him drafted 3rd back in '97, and always knew he would develop into the incredible player he has become today. On and off the court, he is a class act. I am so proud of him and what he has accomplished in just one season with the Denver Nuggets. It truly shows how one player can so greatly impact a team. They are only going to get better in the years to come. Allen Iverson on the other hand? Ugh...selfish, difficult and egotistical are not adjectives I look for in describing an NBA allstar. Despite his individual accomplishments, he has no reason to be so conceited. ONE trip to the finals...ONE game won...does not a champion make.

Although I was alive and present during the Bad Boy era, I was too young to fully appreciate the excitement. My favorite Pistons moment was just before the championship-clinching Game 5 of the 2004 NBA finals...I remember Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight" blaring throughout the Palace in the dim lighting before our team took the court. I turned to my brother, another Pistons fanatic and said, "We're doing this tonight." And we did. I got to go on the court during the ceremony. Unforgettable.

Fast forwarding to present times, I am not happy with the Pistons 1st Round pick in the 2009 draft. Austin Daye is pretty much Tayshaun Prince #2. Despite the fact that GM Joe Dumars is happy with PG Rodney Stuckey and SG and Rip Hamilton running the backcourt, I am a firm believer that the best available player should be chosen upon your turn in the draft. Hell, even if you don't want them...package them in some kind of deal. Drue Holiday and Ty Lawson could have been used as some intense bait. Picks in Round 2 are always hit or miss...so I won't even touch on those. But a swedish bleached blonde dude with the 39th pick? I just don't know...and after Joe D's many draft busts (Darko Milicic, Amir Johnson, Rodney White, Walter Sharpe)...I have my doubts.

It was a pretty boring draft in my opinion. Everyone knew Blake was going #1. Ricky Rubio could be a Pistol Pete in the making. But you never can tell...

Despite the draft, the major buzz around the NBA is currently the trade of Shaq to the Cavs in exchange for Sasha Pavlovic, Ben Wallace, cash and a future pick. Just 11 days after Kobe proved he had the talent and leadership skills to win a championship without Shaq manning the front court, LeBron and the Cavs have done just the opposite...hoping Shaq will be the missing piece of their championship puzzle...as he was for Dwyane Wade in 2006. However, at 37 years old, Shaq's mobility, motivation and agility have all diminished greatly. He was not the answer for the Suns. It will be interesting to see if he can make a difference for the Cavs, who were manhandled by the Magic in the ECF.

Moreover, the trade of Vince Carter to the Orlando Magic is also intriguing. If Vince is willing to take a backseat and let the young Dwight Howard remain the leader of the team, the Magic could be even MORE dangerous this upcoming season. With a healthy Vinsanity, his explosive scoring could help them over the final hump to gloryland.

AND I HAVE A QUESTION...what happened to Jermaine O'Neal?!

I took that as a regular question. I normally pick up on those rhetorical ones, too. Dammit.

I know Jermaine O'Neal picked up his player option to return to Miami for about $23 million. It's really too bad that he keeps getting hurt.

Yeah, I keep looking back at the 2004 NBA Finals and thought it was one of the biggest upsets ever. At least, on paper. But that finals loss really broke the Lakers that time. It caused a domino effect within L.A. but, hey, it didn't take THAT long for them to get back, did it?

I know it's too early to say... but who would you pencil in right now for next season's Finals? Lakers/Cavs? Spurs/Celtics? Nuggets/Pistons? Ha ha.

Also... which trade you think will make the most impact? I think Orlando wins if they get Turkoglu back... but I highly doubt it at this point. Everyone's getting paid big in Orlando. I don't think Cleveland got that much better... and the Spurs look scary yet again by adding Richard Jefferson.

And where do you see Detroit going next year? Are they going to sign a huge free agent, ya think?

Let's end it with a personal question: how was it performing the National Anthem in front of the Palace crowd?

Good luck on your singing career!

Rey-Rey

Someday, I would love for L.A. to get revenge on Detroit. Detroit's beaten L.A. in their last two Finals meetings.

You KNOW I DID. I may be small, but I'm might strong...and fast..and I'm a kickboxer ;)

I guess the Jermaine O'Neal question was a rhetorical one...he has just been mighty off the radar for the salary that he is gettng.

I was really surprised to hear that the Celtics are shopping Rajon Rondo. It seems that with a healthy Kevin Garnett, they could've made another deep run in the playoffs. Rondo must be developing one hell of an ego if they wish to dismantle such a talented core so quickly.

As I said in my last email, I don't think the Shaq trade will improve the Cavs. It didn't work for the Suns...and Shaq is only going to get older, slower and less motivated in the coming months.

Darko to the Knicks? HA...they are asking for it...that's like throwing a kid in a candy store. It's not a secret that the guy loves to party...and "The City That Never Sleeps" will only fuel his late night shenanigans.

I will be sad to see Rip leave Detroit. With Rasheed undoubtedly off the books this year, he is one of the last remaining members of the 2004 championship. Oh how time flies...

However, if the Pistons do look to move Rip, I hope that they can land Ben Gordon on the free agency market. The former UConn Husky is not only a great scorer...he's a great SHOOTER as well...a rare combination nowadays. And, as we all learned in the Bulls outstanding playoff series against the Celtics this April, he is reliable and dependable in crunch time. With the absence of Sheed, the Pistons will need a strong presence on the inside...capable of scoring and defending. Boozer is an option...but he has had his problems with injuries. Only time will tell...but I hope they can spend this money wisely...otherwise the trade of Chauncey Billups was even MORE of a disaster than we could have ever imagined.

2010 Finals...well, wishful thinking is ALWAYS that the Pistons will be there. However, it looks likes we are in the midst of somewhat of a rebuilding phase. I look to see the Lakers defending their championship if they can hold onto Trevor Ariza (who could demand a hefty contract after his impressive contributions these past playoffs) and Lamar Odom. In the East...Orlando can make it back even if they don't manage to resign Hedo IF Vince Carter fills in his shoes. The Cavs are always dangerous because LeBron could defeat most teams even if he had to play against them 5 on 1. A healthy Celtics team could make it back to the finals...especially if Glen "Big Baby" Davis keeps hitting games winners...and he lays off the ice cream and keeps his weight below 540 lbs.

I get to sing the anthem for the Pistons at least once a month during the season at the Palace. It is one of my places to perform...getting to combine singing with basketball?! What more could I ask for?! Heaven on earth...

And one last thing...

Michael Curry just got canned by the Pistons. I wanna get your reaction to that, please.

Well...I was never really too thrilled to have Michael Curry taking over the head coaching position for the Pistons. He did, after all, have just one year of assistant coaching under his belt. He was biting off more than he could chew...before he entered the picture, the Pistons had been to the ECF 6 years in a row and were always considered a force to be reckoned with in the East. He had to have assumed that anything less than a conference finals appearance would have been deemed a failure. And in the world of professional sports, the coach is often the first to be blamed. As the former head of the Players' Association, he was always a well respected player as well as a supportive teammate. Still, I don't know that the players looked at him as an authority figure...it's hard to listen to a guy whom you used to call your friend order you around. After hearing rumors of dissention between Rip Hamilton and Michael Curry, I wonder if this is somewhat of a move on Joe Dumars' behalf to placate the very publicly unhappy Hamilton. Is Rip not on the trading block after all? Only time will tell...

I mentioned a few months ago in our podcast that Curry seemed to have lost his team midway through the season. And I guess I was correct. Wonder who Detroit's going to hire now?

Anyway, it was a BLAST talking to Stephanie about her Pistons and the rest of the league. And we also talked about her singing career in a bit.
Early Central Division Preview: Milwaukee Bucks

As promised, I am taking a very early look at the teams in the Central Division, beginning with the Milwaukee Bucks. I have to leave my usual comfort zone of the Chicago Bulls world for this series, but I think Bulls fans should know who they're competing with in the division. Fans of the other teams in the division might also be amused to see how well I think I know their teams, and I encourage them to enlighten me of how accurate or inaccurate my perceptions are. Look for previews of the other teams in the division soon, with the Chicago Bulls saved for last.

Strengths:
The Bucks still have one proven star in Michael Redd, a shooting
guard with size who can shoot the lights out and defend very well.
However, he will be 30 when the season starts, and his supporting
cast is weak. C Andrew Bogut is an efficient player (18.2 PER last
season, 14.3 for his opponents' counterparts) who rebounds well and
plays solid defense. PF Charlie Villanueva averaged 21.7 points and
8.9 rebounds per 36 minutes last season, but his game is inconsistent
and his D needs work. Ramon Sessions had a respectable 3:1
assist-to-turnover ratio last year, and he's developing into a
legitimate starting point guard (and at $711.5 K last season, he was
a serious bargain). While overpaid for a backup, Luke Ridnour is a
decent PG behind Sessions. Kurt Thomas is on his last legs, but he is
still a good low post defender that could prove serviceable off the
bench. If Bowen sticks around, he'll provide stellar defense on
perimeter players. Jennings is very athletic and talented, and he may
become a very good point guard if he learns all the tricks of the
trade (such as decision-making and guarding quick Rondo-types). Meeks
could be a solid scoring threat off the bench in a poor man's Eddie
House role.

Weaknesses: By
trading the team's second best player, Richard Jefferson, the Bucks
have signaled their intent to dump salary and rebuild. SF Bruce
Bowen's contract is non-guaranteed, and, while he and Gregg Popovich
reportedly have beef, I could see the Bucks passing on his contract
and him ending up back in San Antonio. While Jennings is freakishly
athletic, he's not a true point guard and doesn't have the build
(6'1", 170 lbs) to play shooting guard, so he's a work in progress.
The post presence is pretty poor with this group (team position PER
ranks of 29 at center - with Bogut missing load of time from injury
- and 15 last year), and this team will have to pray that Sessions
and Redd stay healthy throughout the season if they want a productive
backcourt. Scoring is going to be difficult for a team that averaged
under 100 points per game last year, especially with Jefferson gone
and nobody to fill that void. This team really has a weak bench, and
injuries to key players will hit this team hard.

Outlook:
Since they are rebuilding (and I applaud them for choosing that
route), I doubt that they are done making moves. I also doubt that
they will improve their record from last year, and I feel confident
predicting another lottery pick in next year's draft for the Bucks.
Even if this team manages to stay healthy for 82 games, they simply
don't have the talent to do any better than 8th in the
East, and even that seems like a reach with the current crop of
players. The Bucks will probably look into getting value for Redd in
some deal and try to build around Bogut and Jennings. I'm interested
to see what this team will look like in two years.
