            <title>Artest, Ariza Signings Should Not Have Cavs Fans on Suicide Watch</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<table style="border: 0px none ; padding: 0px;"><tbody><tr><td><font style="font-size: 13px; font-family: Verdana; font-weight: bold;">Cavaliers introduce Shaquille O'Neal</font></td></tr><tr><td><script type="text/javascript" src="http://tribeca.vidavee.com/advance/trh/embedAsset.js?vtagView=on&amp;embedded=yes&amp;link=http://videos.cleveland.com/plain-dealer/2009/07/cavaliers_introduce_shaquille.html&amp;showEndCard=off&amp;loadStream=off&amp;autoplay=off&amp;width=470&amp;height=266&amp;shareWidgets=on&amp;vtag=yes&amp;startVolume=50&amp;hidecontrolbar=no&amp;textureStrip=yes&amp;displayTime=yes&amp;volumeLock=off&amp;watermark=yes&amp;skin=v3AdvInt_cleveland.swf&amp;dockey=FA99A456E62A1BE36BAA930A8F354896&amp;"></script></td></tr></tbody></table>

<p>All Cavs fans wanted Ron Artest in the wine and gold. Unfortunately for them, Ron-Ron's heart bled purple and gold, and in the end, the Cavs couldn't compete with the bright lights of Los Angeles -- Shaq and LeBron or no Shaq and LeBron.<br /><br />And while a player like Trevor Ariza would have been a great fit for the Cavs, at what expense? The midlevel exception at $33 million for five years <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4303862">(which is what the Rockets reportedly gave him)?</a><br /><br />Ariza's a nice player, and he has a fan in me after how he played in the postseason. But it's easy to look good when you are option #5 behind Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, and Derek Fisher. And if Ariza wants to go to a Houston team that is being gutted by the minute, then more power to him. He has his ring already, and although I don't know what his intentions are (or how serious the Cavs really were about signing the guy in the first place), he got the money he was looking for.<br /><br />But one thing has become clear as this free agency season really began to take shape on Thursday: The Cavs plan to be big players in the 2010 spending spree. And if you didn't think that Chris Bosh is option #1, 2, and 3 at the Cavaliers' headquarters in suburban Independence, then it's time to get with the program.<br /><br />Many fans will wonder why the Cavs are once again banking on free agency to build their team -- did they not learn their lesson in 2005 when Michael Redd and Ray Allen turned them down and they had to settle for Larry Hughes? And free agency is never a guarantee. While Cavs fans like to toot their horns about how their team can offer LeBron more money than anyone in the market next season, Raptors fans are sitting at home saying the same thing about their guy Bosh.<br /><br />Still, unlike 2005, a guy like Bosh certainly won't be one of a few options out there. Amare Stoudemire will be available. Carlos Boozer will be back on the market, as will Joe Johnson. Dwyane Wade, Dirk Nowitzki, Josh Howard, Steve Nash, and Mehmet Okur will also all be unrestricted. And teams with cap space will have a lot of options.<br /><br />It hurts to think about it as a Cavs fan, because Cavs fans are running out of patience right now (at least if your objective for this team is to add young athletic pieces around LeBron James). But although a guy like Tyson Chandler is only 26-years old, the Cavs took Shaq because of his expiring contract for 2010. In the end, that -- not even Chandler's health issues -- was the ultimate trump card. So you tell me what that means.<br /><br />We will get further proof of Danny Ferry's 2010 intentions based not only on how he eventually ends up using the midlevel exception (or even using it at all), but how he deals with his own free agent, Anderson Varejao.<br /><br />In a perfect world, Varejao would have picked up his player option for $6.2 million this summer and gone unrestricted next summer. It would have made sense for him, too, because with money tight this summer and teams looking to spend at will next summer, will Varejao even match that $6.2 million that he was promised in his original contract? What does it say about him when Marcin Gortat is off the market before he is?<br /><br />Regardless, don't be surprised if Ferry lets Varejao walk and brings in a guy like Antonio McDyess on a one-year deal, maybe even for the full midlevel exception (or preferably the biannual exception). A move like that should make it clear that the Cavs intend to put on the fullcourt press for Bosh and prepare a max offer to him next summer.<br /><br />It's not a game I'd like to play, but at this point, only a guy like Artest is worth sacrificing 2010 cap space. In the end, according to multiple team sources, he was never really a realistic option for the Cavs compared to what the opportunity of playing with the Lakers gave him. A guy like Ariza, however appealing, isn't worth 2010 cap space. And the Cavs never had cap space this summer to give Charlie Villanueva his apparent market value, anyways.<br /><br />So like it or not, that's going to be the course of action for the Cavs. You will hear names like Shawn Marion, McDyess, and Anthony Parker out there. But realize that the Cavs will not, under any circumstances, give any of these guys more than a one year deal. Passing up on Chandler for Shaq should have made that clear initially. Letting Ariza ride off into the sunset to Houston reinforced that.<br /><br />There is no need to panic as a Cavaliers fan. The team still got Shaq pretty much for free, just like they got Mo Williams for free last summer. They're still a 66-win team with a depth chart at center that includes Shaquille O'Neal and Zydrunas Ilgauskas, and even if Varejao leaves, McDyess may be an upgrade, anyways.<br /><br />Just remember, Danny Ferry has bigger fish to fry. And while the Cavs were never really equipped to be major players in this summer's free agency, the pieces are being set to make sure that they are when free agency really matters: 2010.</p>

            <title>Today&apos;s Rumors and More: A Run-Through</title>
            <description><![CDATA[NEW RUMOR: <a href="http://twitter.com/Gary_Tanguay">Gary Tanguay reporting from Twitter</a> -- Garnett, Danny Ainge, and Wyc Grousbeck will all make the trek to Michigan to meet with Rasheed Wallace. It's unknown whether or not Paul and Ray make the trip too. If they do, then I'd say Ray Allen will be a Celtic next year. Why would the Celtics bring him along if they were planning on trading him anyway?<br /><br /><a href="http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=Ron%20Artest&amp;iid=4846643" target="_blank"><img src="http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/a/d/3/d/LAKERS_VS_ROCKETS_f068.JPG?adImageId=1777205&amp;imageId=4846643" alt="LAKERS VS ROCKETS" border="0" width="500" height="382" /></a><script type="text/javascript" src="http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js"></script><br /><br /><a href="http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2009/07/a_curious_courtship_ron_artest.html">Cavs very interested in Artest, Ariza</a>.<br /><br /><blockquote><p><b>According to several league sources, the Cavs are attempting to land Houston Rockets free-agent forward <a href="http://www.nba.com/playerfile/ron_artest/">Ron Artest</a>,
and the pitch included a meeting with LeBron James on Tuesday night in
Los Angeles as both were in Southern California for various events. </b></p><p><b>In addition, a league source indicated the team is trying to attract Los Angeles Lakers swingman <a href="http://www.nba.com/playerfile/trevor_ariza/">Trevor Ariza</a>, who appears to be disgruntled with the Lakers' early attempts to re-sign him. </b></p><p><b>Ariza's agent, David Lee, told the Riverside, Calif.,
Press-Enterprise Wednesday, "I think I'm being optimistic when I say
it's not going anywhere." He added that Ariza might be ready to sign
elsewhere. </b></p><p><b>ESPN reported Ariza had been in contact with the Cavs coaching staff. <br /></b>
</p><b><a href="editor-content.html?cs=utf-8" name="more"></a></b><p><b>Both players are unrestricted free agents and are
being courted by several teams. Without a sign-and-trade deal, the most
the Cavs could sign a player to is a salary starting at around $5.6
million with their midlevel exception. Artest made $7.4 million last
season, Ariza $3.1 million. <br /></b></p><b>Artest is believed to prefer to play for a championship contender
and is thought to be considering the Lakers and Celtics in addition to
the Cavs. With the Rockets facing the uncertain injury status of stars <a href="http://www.nba.com/playerfile/yao_ming/index.html">Yao Ming</a> and <a href="http://www.nba.com/playerfile/tracy_mcgrady/index.html">Tracy McGrady</a>, it is unclear how hard they will try to push to re-sign Artest.</b><br /><br /><b>The Rockets have had interest in Cavs free agent <a href="http://www.nba.com/playerfile/anderson_varejao/index.html">Anderson Varejao</a>
in the past, which opens up some possibilities of a sign-and-trade
scenario. The Cavs, however, have said they want to re-sign Varejao. </b><br /></blockquote>Insight: This scenario has been discussed by both sides for quite some time now. The Cavs need a guy to take the load off LeBron on defense, and take on the role of guarding guys like Paul Pierce, Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant, Hedo Turkoglu, Vince Carter, and Paul Pierce. With a starting line-up of Mo Williams, Ron Artest, LeBron James, a free agent/Anderson Varejao, and Shaq, they'd impose both a threat on defense and on offense. <br /><br />However, what catches my eye is "<b>Artest is believed to prefer to play for a championship contender
and is thought to be considering the Lakers and Celtics in addition to
the Cavs.</b>" The Celtics too, need a player who can share some of the burden with their star small forward, Paul Pierce, on defense and offense. If the Danny Ainge can steal Artest away, we'd be looking at a more impressive Celtics team than we've ever seen since Garnett arrived in Boston.<br /><br />With the vast improvement of Glen Davis, -- who seems to be leaning more towards coming back to the C's after they made a qualifying offer to him --&nbsp; Rajon Rondo, and Kendrick Perkins, the Celtics have a whole new look. Ainge may look to make a big splash this year to give the team a revamped roster heading into 2009-10.<br /><br />However, if the C's do manage to work something out with Artest, I doubt they'd make a move for Rasheed Wallace. While a big man is a team need, I'm hoping Artest would take less money in exchange for a better shot at the title, as the C's would then have the opportunity to sign a solid big man in the free agent market. <br /><br />Trevor Ariza has also been rumored to go to the Celtics, along with teams such as the Cavs and Lakers. I'm not sure why he wouldn't return to LA, as he just won a title with them, but then again, the more effective players leaving the Lakers the better. Ariza offers some flexibility in terms of positions and roles. He is able to come off the bench and start, and is capable of playing both the small forward position and shooting guard. <br /><br />It's a controversial rumor for sure. All I know is that whatever team succeeds in bidding for one of the two players automatically becomes favorites for the championship. <br />

<p><br /></p><a href="http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/articles/2009/07/02/celtics_have_target/?rss_id=Boston.com+--+Boston+Celtics+news">Celtics still looking hard at Rasheed Wallace</a>.<br /><br /><blockquote><div class="articlePluckHidden"><p><b>The Celtics' interest in Wallace is
not for the long term, though. Wallace, 34, might be the most
intriguing of free agent candidates, his relationship with Celtics
forward Kevin Garnett a possible advantage.</b></p></div><div class="articlePluckHidden"><p><b>Strickland confirmed the Celtics' contact with Wallace with a text message: "The interest is mutual.''</b></p></div><div class="articlePluckHidden"><p><b>Asked
if Wallace, who earned $13 million with the Pistons last season, could
join the Celtics as a mid-level exception, Strickland said: "We will
see how things work out.''</b></p></div><div class="articlePluckHidden"><p><b>Charlotte, Cleveland, Orlando, and San Antonio have also shown interest in Wallace.</b></p></div><div class="articlePluckHidden"><p><b>Ainge
said he did not contact any players directly, nor has he made contract
offers. Ainge said he has been on the receiving end of many more
inquiries from agents in recent days than he has proferred.</b></p></div><div class="articlePluckHidden"><p><b>"We'll
just continue to stay in contact with free agents to see if there is
something we can do,'' Ainge said. "That could take some time. Free
agents are talking to several teams. I don't anticipate anything
dramatic happening any time soon. We have plenty of time left.</b></p></div><div class="articlePluckHidden"><p><b>"We
have an interest in a lot of free agents, on different levels. We have
different needs. I think everybody's trying to get a feel to where the
market is. I think a lot of players start on July 1st with big dollar
signs in their eyes, and then some of them get it, and some of them
don't. And some of them come looking for anything later in the summer.</b><br /></p></div></blockquote><div class="articlePluckHidden"><p>Insight: Danny Ainge is one tricky fella. Rasheed Wallace, Ron Artest, and Trevor Ariza are all on the Celtics radar among others. They need a big man, and a guy to back up Paul Pierce. But wait! They want to get Bill Walker some minutes as well. But, if they don't sign a free agent to back up Pierce and make Walker the second string small forward, we can't be sure that Walker will come through. After all, he didn't get too many minutes in his first year.</p><p>I can only tell you guys one thing I'm 100% positive about: Danny Ainge sure brews up a lot of questions.<br /></p><p><br /></p><p><i><a href="http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=Ben%20Gordon&amp;iid=4625196" target="_blank"><img src="http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/e/9/5/f/PicImg_CelticsBulls_5fc1.JPG?adImageId=1777224&amp;imageId=4625196" alt="Celtics-Bulls" border="0" width="500" height="346" /></a><script type="text/javascript" src="http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js"></script><br /></i></p><p><i>Chris Broussard is telling us on ESPN that Rip Hamilton will not be traded by the Pistons, Avery Johnson most targeted to replace vacant coaching position.</i></p></div>Insight: Interesting. Detroit feels that a backcourt of Stuckey, Gordon, and Rip Hamilton could be one explosive scoring machine. They'd have Gordon coming off the bench, something that he did for some time when playing for Chicago. <br /><br />Avery Johnson is a primary target for the Pistons in their search for a new coach, as they fired Michael Curry just days ago. It has also been reported that Bill Laimbeer is not a candidate. Surprise, surprise.<br /><br /><br /><a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4301324">Clippers sending Zach Randolph to the Grizz</a>.<br /><b><br /></b><blockquote><p><b>The team [the Clips] agreed to trade power forward <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=1017">Zach Randolph</a> to the <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/clubhouse?team=mem">Memphis Grizzlies</a> for swingman <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=703">Quentin Richardson</a>, sources told ESPN.com's Chad Ford. The deal was first reported by the Los Angeles Times.</b></p><p><b>The trade can't be finalized until the league establishes the salary cap July 8 and lifts the moratorium on player movement.</b></p></blockquote>Insight: Zach Randolph is on the move again, this time to the Grizz. That's it. It's final. Chris Wallace is officially one of the league's worst executives. On a team which includes Hakim Warrick, Rudy Gay, Mike Conley Jr., and Marc Gasol, why the heck would you want to trade for Zach Randolph? <br /><br />I understand that they get rid of another locker room cancer in return for Randolph, Quentin Richardson, but after Randolph's stint with the Clippers, I'm convinced he won't find a city he can truly call home. He's just too much of a loudmouth -- loves to get involved in altercations, loves to make a fuss.<br /><br />Is that really the direction Memphis is heading?<br /> <div><br /></div>]]></description>

            <title>Cavaliers Hot For Ron Artest, Trevor Ariza</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<p><object width="440" height="361"><param name="movie" value="http://espn.go.com/videohub/player.swf?mediaId=4302328" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><embed src="http://espn.go.com/videohub/player.swf?mediaId=4302328" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" allowscriptaccess="always" width="440" height="361"></object></p>

<p><p>So the previously unsubstantiated speculation regarding the Cavs as a possible destination for unrestricted free agent swingman Ron Artest were not so far off, after all.<br /><br />It's definitely not a done deal, by any stretch, but Artest may have emerged as the no. 1 target for Cavaliers GM Danny Ferry as free agency opened its doors on Wednesday morning. <a href="http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2009/07/a_curious_courtship_ron_artest.html">From the Plain Dealer's Brian Windhorst:</a><br /><br /></p><blockquote><p><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>According to several league sources, the Cavs have been in contact with Houston Rockets free agent forward Ron Artest. It even included a face-to-face pitch from LeBron James<a href="http://www.nba.com/playerfile/lebron_james/index.html"> </a>Tuesday night in Los Angeles as both were in Southern California for various events. </b></font></p><p><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>Artest, who is an unrestricted free agent after a contract that paid
him $7.4 million with the Rockets expired, is being courted by several
teams. Artest is believed to prefer to play for a championship
contender. In addition to the Rockets, the Cavs may be getting
competition from the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers for his
services. </b></font></p><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>With the Rockets facing the uncertain injury status of stars Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady, it is unclear how hard they will try to push to re-sign Artest. They are pursuing Orlando Magic free agent center Marcin Gortat.</b></font><br /></blockquote></p>

<p><p></p><p></p><p>If the market is not there for Artest, he can definitely use the Cavs to have another career year on a team that will be on national TV all the time. He could also get infinite exposure for his game if the Cavs make another deep playoff run and even win their first-ever championship next spring.<br /><br />But Artest isn't the only lockdown swingman defender that Ferry is pursuing.<br /><br /><a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4301414">From ESPN.com's Chris Broussard:</a><br /><br /></p><blockquote><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>With at least five teams pursuing Ariza, the Lakers are currently
unwilling to pay him more than the $5.6 million mid-level exception.</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>"They're letting him go," one of the sources said.</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>Cleveland is making a hard push for Ariza, and the Cavaliers' coaching
staff was speaking with him on Wednesday. While Cleveland can only
offer the mid-level as well, Ariza's disappointment with the Lakers'
stance has moved other suitors ahead of his current team.</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>The Rockets, Clippers, Raptors and Blazers are also showing interest in
Ariza. Portland and Toronto could each offer more than the mid-level
exception.</b></font><br /></blockquote><br />Finally. Two players that have been on my radar as perfect fits for the Cavs have finally emerged as the two players that Ferry wants the most. Not a "stretch big" like Charlie Villanueva or Rasheed Wallace. But Ron Artest and Trevor Ariza. <br /><br />And with Orlando looking likely to lose Hedo Turkoglu to the Western Conference's Blazers pretty soon, the Magic's mismatch problems will be a thing of the past. But if they do resurface, a guy like Artest or Ariza is the perfect panacea for a team that really doesn't need many more parts to become an NBA champion.<br /><br />At 24, Ariza would definitely be a long-term solution on the wing in Cleveland. Some sources on Tuesday night even speculated that the Cavs are in the hunt for a wing player who can slide LeBron to the power forward spot next season, and the 6'8" Ariza -- a small forward by trade -- fits the bill. <br /><br />He can even play some shooting guard, and he's definitely quick enough to cover other two's. Regardless, he makes the Cavs deeper, better on the perimeter on both ends, and a little bit more athletic. Add him with other young pieces like Delonte West, Mo Williams, and a hopefully re-signed Anderson Varejao, and you're finally talking about Ferry building a nice core around LeBron.<br /><br />Something tells me Thursday's going to be a big day. Stay tuned.</p>

            <title>Let Free Agency Palooza 2009 Begin</title>
            <description><![CDATA[ <div style="text-align: center;"> <a href="http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=rasheed%20wallace&amp;iid=431600" target="_blank"><img src="http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/0428/8afbe232-7f84-4a75-b547-16dbd470df7c.jpg?adImageId=1750214&amp;imageId=431600" alt="Detroit Pistons v Boston Celtics, Game Two" width="500" border="0" height="365" /></a><script type="text/javascript" src="http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js"></script></div>
<div style="text-align: center;"><em><strong>Could Rasheed Wallace be on top of the Cavs wish list?</strong></em></div>

<br />Let the madness begin on July 1st at exactly 12:00 A.M. Eastern Standard Time. <br /><br />Phone calls will be made. Negotiations will start. But no deals can be signed until July 7th.<br /><br />For the first time in a while, it'd be right to speculate that the Cavs will actually sign a free agent during the off-season. The last time Danny Ferry and Co. used a significant amount of cap space to sign free agents, was in the Summer of 2005 when he first got the job. The Cavs ended up with Larry Hughes, Donyell Marshall and Damon Jones after hoping to get a top-notch sidekick to put next to LeBron.<br /><br />4 years later and it finally looks like the Cavs are willing to spend significant money again.<br /><br />This time the Cavs won't have the $20 some million they had when Ferry first got hired, but rather the Mid-Level Exception (expected to be around $5.8 million) and the Bi-Annual Exception (expected to be around $2 million). And of course on top of those exceptions, they can also sign as many minimum contract players as possible.<br /><br />So with the Free Agency madness ready to go, here are some players that are expected to be connected to the Cavs in one way or the other.<br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.5625em;"><b>PGs<br /><br /></b></font>While a point guard isn't expected to be at the top of the Cavs shopping list, it is expected to be a position their going to be shopping for.<br /><br />Delonte West had to play major minutes last year during the season and playoffs because the Cavs needed him to play point guard when Mo Williams wasn't on the floor. What it seems the Cavs want to do is add a veteran point guard to be there as insurance policy but to also run the offense off the bench, if need be, for 8-10 minutes a game.<br /><br />It's not expected the Cavs will spend a lot on a point guard, if any at all. <b><br /><br />Jason Kidd</b> - while the Cavs do already have 3 point guards (Gibson, Williams, and West) Kidd is just too talented to pass up if he wants to come here. The Cavs have other, more pressing needs, but Kidd's talent could be just as impactful as any other piece out there.<br /><br /><b>Tyronn Lue</b> - Lue could help the Cavs from prior experiences, in that Lue played with Shaq while he was in Los Angeles and also played in Orlando last year. He has always been a solid, consistent point guard with a streaky shot and solid defense.<br /><b><br />Bobby Jackson</b> - after being a spark-plug for many years off Sacramento's bench, it looks like Jackson might be in "Ring-Mode" and searching for a Finals contender to play with. While Jackson is more of a combo guard, he can still get the job done. <br /><br /><b>Anthony Carter</b> - after rejuvenating his career in Denver the past few seasons, Carter could be a viable option for the Cavs. While he's not the best shooter, he's still a solid floor general and defender coming off the bench.<br /><b><br />Shaun Livingston</b> - one of the very few interesting options I'd love to see the Cavs take a chance on. This is the type of low-risk, high-reward moves that GMs can really gain a lot from.<br /><br /><u>Others</u>: Ronnie Price; CJ Watson; Jason Hart <br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.5625em;"><b>Wings</b><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 0.64em;">The Cavs would really like to acquire a SG to fit into the starting lineup to fit next to Mo Williams and LeBron James, and move Delonte West to the bench. While their are some possible replacements for Delonte at the SG spot, the Cavs have limited assets to use and may end up having to settle for a SG that would end up coming off the bench.<br /><br />Right now the two characteristics that seem most important in a wing for the Cavs, are defense and shooting. The Cavs need more perimeter defenders and that will probably be the number one requirement for any wing player they bring in, but they will also have to shoot the ball decently as well.<br /><br />The Cavs could end up using part of the MLE on a wing player but it's not expected the Cavs will have to. They might end up using the BAE on whatever wing player they sign.</font><br /></font><br /><b>Anthony Parker</b> - a player the Cavs chased 3 years ago and will almost definitely chase again. Parker is pretty much exactly what the Cavs want at the SG spot.<br /><br /><b>Matt Barnes</b> - a guy that Ferry has seemed to admire for a while. The former Cavalier, would fit right in with his defense, versatility and spot-up shooting.<br /><br /><b>Ron Artest</b> - with Yao Ming's future now looking very murky, Artest could shop elsewhere and the Cavs may be one of his top possible destinations. <a href="http://mvn.com/cavalierattitude/2009/06/cavaliers-rumor-mill-charlie-villanueva-ron-artest-linked-to-cleveland.html">Amar went in-depth on this topic yesterday.</a><br /><br /><b>Josh Childress</b> - Childress hasn't decided whether or not he's coming over from Europe and he's a restricted free agent with the Hawks but should he get a good enough offer from the States, then Childress could bolt. Wherever Childress ends up, a sign-and-trade ultimately looks like the most realistic option at this point.<br /><br /><b>Grant Hill - </b>even though Hill has a desire to stay in Phoenix, the Suns rebuilding and him wanting a ring could change things for Hill.<br /><u><br />Others:</u> Marquis Daniels; Shawn Marion; Jamario Moon <br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.5625em;"><b>"Stretch" Bigs</b><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 0.64em;">Ah, the stretch big. What was once not too popular in the NBA, has all of a sudden exploded onto the scene and has become a "must have" for every NBA team. <br /><br />The stretch big has become so popular because it not only creates instant match-up problems but it also creates a lot more floor spacing with their being 4 capable perimeter shooters, instead of the normal three in a lineup.<br /><br />The stretch big seems to be on the top of the Cavs shopping list and is where the Cavs will likely spend their MLE.<br /><br />Whatever big the Cavs end up putting next to Shaq, will likely determine what road the Cavs end up going, in their pursuit of a wing player and maybe of a PG.<br /></font></font><br /><b>Rasheed Wallace</b> - he's been linked to the Cavs and many contending teams for awhile now and it almost certainly seems he's hungry for another ring. His attitude is in question, as well as his possible declining game. At this point in time, even though he may fit, it may be in the Cavs best interest in letting him go elsewhere.<br /><b><br />Charlie Villanueva</b> - since becoming an unrestricted free agent not too long ago, it seems like Charlie has become an instant Cavalier fan favorite. While Charlie does have some deficiencies in his game, it's hard not to like a skilled, 24-year old big man with a lot of potential. <br /><b><br />Antonio McDyess</b> - one of the all-time classiest guys in the game, McDyess looks hungrier than ever for a ring. McDyess was supposedly telling friends last year, that he was upset he didn't sign with the Cavs after being released by the Nuggets in the Chauncey Billups deal. It's very likely the Cavs still have interest in him, as he'd be a Udonis Haslem type fit next to Shaq. <br /><b><br />Lamar Odom</b> - with Los Angeles due to have two big free agents, Ariza and Odom, it's looking like the Lakers will have a hard time keeping both and that Ariza is their #1 priority. While Odom isn't too likely to get away, if he does you can expect the Cavs to be one of the first teams to call him.<br /><br /><u>Others:</u> Channing Frye; Hakim Warrick<br /><br />While there may be more players the Cavs are looking at or are interested in, those are pretty much the names and positions that the Cavs will be associated with.<br /><br />Now it's time to sit back, kick the feet up, and enjoy the summer ride that Free Agency always is.<br />]]></description>

            <title>Talking To Chicks Who Love Hoops (Stephanie K)</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana"><i>Welcome to Talking To Chicks Who Love Hoops. We all know female sports fans are a hot commodity for us dudes. Maybe not as rare as we think but us guys always think they're inferior when it comes to sports knowledge. Well, in this feature, I talk to them about the NBA and check what goes through their heads. And I ask them about everything else in an attempt to make this more fun and versatile instead of just straight sports. And watch out; these chicks might know more than you guys. Hell, they might even know more than yours truly.</i></p>

<p>I wonder if it gets embedded in you when you're already at the game while you're not even born. That seems to be the case for the talented and beautiful <b>Stephanie K</b>. Stephanie K is not only a huge fan of the NBA but also an aspiring singer. We talked about the NBA, her beloved <b>Detroit Pistons</b>, and a bit about her singing as well. I guess she didn't take me seriously when I offered to do a duet! Dammit.</p>

<p>And right before I was going to put up this entry, we got breaking news that <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4297296"><b>Michael Curry</b></a> was fired as head coach of her beloved Pistons. So at the very last minute, I got Stephanie's reaction on that as well.</p>

<p><img src="http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b131/r2estyle/NLP/stephaniek002.jpg"></p>

<p>Yeah, my font is in purple... and her font is in blue.</p>

<p><i><font color="purple">Dear Stephanie, </font></p>

<p><font color="purple">It's my fault for not E-Mailing you sooner about this but I'll admit that it's been a pretty awesome NBA week. I was stoked that the Lakers won the title, yes, but, man, I can't wait for the title defense.</font></p>

<p><font color="purple">Anyway, I know you root for them Pistons. And I know from your site that you're a huge Chauncey Billups fan. So do you now also root for the Denver Nuggets? They had one hell of a playoff run and I don't see any reason why they can't do this again next year. </font></p>

<p><font color="purple">So have you lived in Michigan all your life? And I take it you grew up watching the Pistons? Tell me how you got into it and tell me your huge NBA fandom. Because you told me on Twitter that you are like... the biggest fan ever. And your boys beat the Lakers in '04. Is that your favorite NBA moment ever?</font></p>

<p><font color="purple">Also... I'd like to get your thoughts on all the trades that have gone down... and how do you think the Pistons are going to do next season. Give me some of that NBA knowledge, girlfriend!</font></p>

<p><font color="purple">By the way, you are an outstanding singer. I saw the vid where you sang the national anthem at The Palace of Auburn Hills. I hope you continue to go places with your voice. I love your song, It's You. Maybe you can write me a song sometime. Or maybe we can do a duet together! Yeah!</font></p>

<p><font color="purple">See? I pay attention!</font></p>

<p><font color="purple">Rey-Rey</font></i></p>

<p><b>I'll make love to you! Like you want me to...</b></p>

<p>...uhhh, okay. Moving on to her reply...</p>

<p><i><font color="blue">To start, I'm not ashamed to admit that I have gotten into many intense verbal battles over the years defending my beloved Pistons in bars, sports books, arenas, etc. Bad, great, terrible (see: the teal colors era), they will always be my favorite team. I'm a hometown girl and have been attending games (front row season tickets) since I resided in my mother's womb. And that's not a joke...</font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">This year was a tough one to swallow. After 6 straight conference finals appearances, a first round sweeping was absolutely devastating. Chauncey Billups, our captain, leader and MVP during our championship (and then some), has been MY MVP since his days at Colorado. I was thrilled to see him drafted 3rd back in '97, and always knew he would develop into the incredible player he has become today. On and off the court, he is a class act. I am so proud of him and what he has accomplished in just one season with the Denver Nuggets. It truly shows how one player can so greatly impact a team. They are only going to get better in the years to come. Allen Iverson on the other hand? Ugh...selfish, difficult and egotistical are not adjectives I look for in describing an NBA allstar. Despite his individual accomplishments, he has no reason to be so conceited. ONE trip to the finals...ONE game won...does not a champion make.</font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">Although I was alive and present during the Bad Boy era, I was too young to fully appreciate the excitement. My favorite Pistons moment was just before the championship-clinching Game 5 of the 2004 NBA finals...I remember Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight" blaring throughout the Palace in the dim lighting before our team took the court. I turned to my brother, another Pistons fanatic and said, "We're doing this tonight." And we did. I got to go on the court during the ceremony. Unforgettable.</font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">Fast forwarding to present times, I am not happy with the Pistons 1st Round pick in the 2009 draft. Austin Daye is pretty much Tayshaun Prince #2. Despite the fact that GM Joe Dumars is happy with PG Rodney Stuckey and SG and Rip Hamilton running the backcourt, I am a firm believer that the best available player should be chosen upon your turn in the draft. Hell, even if you don't want them...package them in some kind of deal. Drue Holiday and Ty Lawson could have been used as some intense bait. Picks in Round 2 are always hit or miss...so I won't even touch on those. But a swedish bleached blonde dude with the 39th pick? I just don't know...and after Joe D's many draft busts (Darko Milicic, Amir Johnson, Rodney White, Walter Sharpe)...I have my doubts.</font></p>

<p><img src="http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b131/r2estyle/NLP/stuckey001.jpg"><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">It was a pretty boring draft in my opinion. Everyone knew Blake was going #1. Ricky Rubio could be a Pistol Pete in the making. But you never can tell...</font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">Despite the draft, the major buzz around the NBA is currently the trade of Shaq to the Cavs in exchange for Sasha Pavlovic, Ben Wallace, cash and a future pick. Just 11 days after Kobe proved he had the talent and leadership skills to win a championship without Shaq manning the front court, LeBron and the Cavs have done just the opposite...hoping Shaq will be the missing piece of their championship puzzle...as he was for Dwyane Wade in 2006. However, at 37 years old, Shaq's mobility, motivation and agility have all diminished greatly. He was not the answer for the Suns. It will be interesting to see if he can make a difference for the Cavs, who were manhandled by the Magic in the ECF.</font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">Moreover, the trade of Vince Carter to the Orlando Magic is also intriguing. If Vince is willing to take a backseat and let the young Dwight Howard remain the leader of the team, the Magic could be even MORE dangerous this upcoming season. With a healthy Vinsanity, his explosive scoring could help them over the final hump to gloryland. </font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">AND I HAVE A QUESTION...what happened to Jermaine O'Neal?!</font></i></p>

<p>I took that as a regular question. I normally pick up on those rhetorical ones, too. Dammit.</p>

<p><i><font color="purple">I know Jermaine O'Neal picked up his player option to return to Miami for about $23 million. It's really too bad that he keeps getting hurt. </font></p>

<p><font color="purple">Yeah, I keep looking back at the 2004 NBA Finals and thought it was one of the biggest upsets ever. At least, on paper. But that finals loss really broke the Lakers that time. It caused a domino effect within L.A. but, hey, it didn't take THAT long for them to get back, did it?</font></p>

<p><font color="purple">I know it's too early to say... but who would you pencil in right now for next season's Finals? Lakers/Cavs? Spurs/Celtics? Nuggets/Pistons? Ha ha.</font></p>

<p><font color="purple">Also... which trade you think will make the most impact? I think Orlando wins if they get Turkoglu back... but I highly doubt it at this point. Everyone's getting paid big in Orlando. I don't think Cleveland got that much better... and the Spurs look scary yet again by adding Richard Jefferson.</font></p>

<p><font color="purple">And where do you see Detroit going next year? Are they going to sign a huge free agent, ya think?</font> </p>

<p><font color="purple">Let's end it with a personal question: how was it performing the National Anthem in front of the Palace crowd? </font></p>

<p><font color="purple">Good luck on your singing career!</font></p>

<p><font color="purple">Rey-Rey</font></i></p>

<p>Someday, I would love for L.A. to get revenge on Detroit. Detroit's beaten L.A. in their last two Finals meetings.</p>

<p><i><font color="blue">You KNOW I DID.  I may be small, but I'm might strong...and fast..and I'm a kickboxer ;)</font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">I guess the Jermaine O'Neal question was a rhetorical one...he has just been mighty off the radar for the salary that he is gettng.</font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">I was really surprised to hear that the Celtics are shopping Rajon Rondo. It seems that with a healthy Kevin Garnett, they could've made another deep run in the playoffs. Rondo must be developing one hell of an ego if they wish to dismantle such a talented core so quickly.</font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">As I said in my last email, I don't think the Shaq trade will improve the Cavs. It didn't work for the Suns...and Shaq is only going to get older, slower and less motivated in the coming months. </font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">Darko to the Knicks? HA...they are asking for it...that's like throwing a kid in a candy store. It's not a secret that the guy loves to party...and "The City That Never Sleeps" will only fuel his late night shenanigans.</font> <br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">I will be sad to see Rip leave Detroit. With Rasheed undoubtedly off the books this year, he is one of the last remaining members of the 2004 championship. Oh how time flies...</font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">However, if the Pistons do look to move Rip, I hope that they can land Ben Gordon on the free agency market. The former UConn Husky is not only a great scorer...he's a great SHOOTER as well...a rare combination nowadays. And, as we all learned in the Bulls outstanding playoff series against the Celtics this April, he is reliable and dependable in crunch time. With the absence of Sheed, the Pistons will need a strong presence on the inside...capable of scoring and defending. Boozer is an option...but he has had his problems with injuries. Only time will tell...but I hope they can spend this money wisely...otherwise the trade of Chauncey Billups was even MORE of a disaster than we could have ever imagined.</font></p>

<p><img src="http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b131/r2estyle/NLP/billupsmvp.jpg"><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">2010 Finals...well, wishful thinking is ALWAYS that the Pistons will be there. However, it looks likes we are in the midst of somewhat of a rebuilding phase. I look to see the Lakers defending their championship if they can hold onto Trevor Ariza (who could demand a hefty contract after his impressive contributions these past playoffs) and Lamar Odom. In the East...Orlando can make it back even if they don't manage to resign Hedo IF Vince Carter fills in his shoes. The Cavs are always dangerous because LeBron could defeat most teams even if he had to play against them 5 on 1. A healthy Celtics team could make it back to the finals...especially if Glen "Big Baby" Davis keeps hitting games winners...and he lays off the ice cream and keeps his weight below 540 lbs.</font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">I get to sing the anthem for the Pistons at least once a month during the season at the Palace. It is one of my places to perform...getting to combine singing with basketball?! What more could I ask for?! Heaven on earth...</font></i></p>

<p>And one last thing...</p>

<p><i><font color="purple">Michael Curry just got canned by the Pistons. I wanna get your reaction to that, please.</font></i></p>

<p><i><font color="blue">Well...I was never really too thrilled to have Michael Curry taking over the head coaching position for the Pistons. He did, after all, have just one year of assistant coaching under his belt. He was biting off more than he could chew...before he entered the picture, the Pistons had been to the ECF 6 years in a row and were always considered a force to be reckoned with in the East. He had to have assumed that anything less than a conference finals appearance would have been deemed a failure. And in the world of professional sports, the coach is often the first to be blamed. As the former head of the Players' Association, he was always a well respected player as well as a supportive teammate. Still, I don't know that the players looked at him as an authority figure...it's hard to listen to a guy whom you used to call your friend order you around. After hearing rumors of dissention between Rip Hamilton and Michael Curry, I wonder if this is somewhat of a move on Joe Dumars' behalf to placate the very publicly unhappy Hamilton. Is Rip not on the trading block after all? Only time will tell...</font></i></p>

<p>I mentioned a few months ago in our podcast that Curry seemed to have lost his team midway through the season. And I guess I was correct. Wonder who Detroit's going to hire now?</p>

<p>Anyway, it was a BLAST talking to Stephanie about her Pistons and the rest of the league. And we also talked about her singing career in a bit. <title>Cavaliers Rumor Mill: Charlie Villanueva, Ron Artest Linked to Cleveland</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image" style="display: inline;"><img alt="charlievillanuevabucks.jpg" src="http://mvn.com/cavalierattitude/charlievillanuevabucks.jpg" class="mt-image-none" style="" width="576" height="324" /></span><br /><br />Two huge stories broke on the NBA landscape on Monday, both of which could have a tremendous impact on the Cleveland Cavaliers and free agency. <br /><br />One was the big news that Yao Ming could likely miss all of the 2009-10 season -- <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=bucher_ric&amp;page=yaoming-090629">and he might even be done for the rest of his career.</a> This news stems from the left foot injury he sustained during the Houston Rockets' second-round series with the Los Angeles Lakers.<br /><br />The second bit of news was the the Milwaukee Bucks, whose cost-cutting trade for Richard Jefferson led many to believe that the franchise had tried to earmark some money for Charlie Villanueva, <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4295423">did not extend a qualifying offer to the 25-year old power forward on Monday.</a> This makes Villanueva, who just completed his fourth year in the league, an unrestricted free agent.<br /><br />Before, signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers meant getting a chance to play with LeBron. Now, with Shaquille O'Neal in the fold, free agents could be lining up for the opportunity to play with LeBron <i>and</i> Shaq.<br /><br />I mean, if you were an NBA player who was never going to be a franchise-type guy any time soon, wouldn't <i>you </i>like the opportunity to be the third wheel behind these two future Hall of Famers? Especially with Shaq now talking about wanting to play two more years after this one and the likelihood of LeBron staying in Cleveland riding on a 2010 championship or bust?<br /><br />Villanueva and Houston's Ron Artest sure think so. At least according to some sources and online social networking sites.<br /><br />Fist, Villanueva. Some sources close to the Cavs were saying following the Shaq trade that the team's next agenda was to acquire a "stretch" power forward who could hit the 3 and keep defenses honest. The Cavs currently have two guys -- LB and Shaq -- who are at their best in the paint, whether it be posting up (Shaq) or driving to the basket (LeBron). Having a post-up power forward is useless, and starting and giving major minutes to Anderson Varejao (if he is even brought back) could be even worse.<br /><br />In comes Villanueva. And never fear, <a href="http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2009/06/cleveland_cavaliers_target_unr.html">our guy Brian Windhorst at the Cleveland Plain Dealer was already all over the news on Monday:</a><br /><br /><blockquote><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>Villanueva has a good relationship with [Mo] Williams, who became close to
him the two seasons they played together in Milwaukee. Williams could
serve as a recruiter much in the same way he helped bring another of
his close friends to the Cavs, former Bucks teammate Joe Smith, when he
was a free agent last March.</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>Villanueva also has a long-standing relationship with LeBron James. The
two were in the same high school class and played with each other in
various tournaments and summer camps as they were growing up. Following
their senior year of high school, Villanueva and James became closer
while taking part in two national All-Star Games, including the
McDonald's All-American Game in Cleveland. They have kept in touch ever
since.</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>The Cavs have been looking for a "stretch" power forward like
Villanueva for some time. Because he is a good mid-range and decent
long-range shooter (35 percent on 3-pointers last season), he is
potentially a good fit alongside players such as James and Williams,
who like to drive and kick out passes. Add in O'Neal, who succeed
earlier in his career with stretch power forwards such as Robert Horry
in Los Angeles and Antoine Walker in Miami, and that option creates an
even better fit.</b></font><br /></blockquote><br />Getting Villanueva would be a masterpiece move by Danny Ferry. Many fans were and still are willing to settle for 35-year old Rasheed Wallace. But after not being able to use the draft as an avenue to add young talent to this nucleus, Ferry now has a chance to add a 25-year old power forward who is still a few years away from his prime and can fit like a glove right away.<br /><br />Villanueva is coming off a banner year where he posted career numbers of 16.2 points and 6.7 rebounds. The former Connecticut Huskie was an absolute beast <a href="http://www.nba.com/playerfile/charlie_villanueva/season_splits.html">in the dog days of January and February.</a>
In 18 games in January (10 which were starts), Villanueva averaged 20.2
points and 7.0 rebounds while shooting 51.7 percent from the field and
44.1 percent (30-for-68) from 3-point range. In 11 games during
February, all of which were starts, he put up 21.6 points and 6.6
boards while shooting 47.6 percent from the field and 42.1 percent
(24-for-57) from downtown.<br /><br />Not only that, but Villanueva, one of the first athletes to become a Twitter celebrity, <a href="http://twitter.com/CV31">had a series of "tweets" indicating a desire,</a> however subtle, to play for the Cavs:<br /><br /><blockquote><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b><span class="status-body"><span class="entry-content">Cleveland fans are showing me mad love on twitter, appreciate the love</span><span class="meta entry-meta"></span></span></b></font><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b><span class="status-body"><span class="meta entry-meta"><a href="http://twitter.com/CV31/status/2377848349" class="entry-date" rel="bookmark"><span class="published">3:59 PM Jun 28th</span></a> <span>from web</span> </span></span></b></font><br /></blockquote><br /><blockquote><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b><span class="status-body"><span class="entry-content">well, twitterland
like I said there will be more trades to come, very interesting, Shaq
to Cleveland, nice, all Cleveland need is a PF now</span><span class="meta entry-meta"></span></span></b></font><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b><span class="status-body"><span class="meta entry-meta"><a href="http://twitter.com/CV31/status/2326049577" class="entry-date" rel="bookmark"><span class="published">6:28 AM Jun 25th</span></a> <span>from web</span> </span></span></b></font><br /></blockquote><br />Villanueva has also been asked about the subject of joining the Cavs before, <a href="http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/46853717.html">most recently by ESPN Radio's Freddie Coleman.</a><br /><br />Most Cavs fans out there are very well aware of the proposed marriage between Villanueva and the wine and gold. But another curve ball on Monday impacted Yao Ming's future and the future of Rockets unrestricted free agent Ron Artest.<br /><br />ESPN.com's Chris Broussard -- one of our favorite NBA guys here at the 'Tude -- was on with Kenny Roda of ESPN 850 in Cleveland on Monday <a href="http://www.stationcaster.com/player.php?s=70&amp;c=478&amp;f=29126">and dropped this bombshell on the Wine &amp; Gold Nation:</a><br /><br /><blockquote><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b><u>Broussard</u>: The Yao Ming situation...this name I'm about to throw out here is baggage-infested, all right? But what about a Ron Artest?</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b><u>Rodda</u>: I'll take him yesterday, Chris. How do the Cavaliers work that out? Because right now, free agency-wise, all they have is the midlevel at, what, $5-6 million or whatever that is. How do you get a Ron Artest from the Rockets to the Cavaliers?</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b><u>Broussard</u>: Well, this is the thing. Does Yao Ming's situation change the outlook for the Rockets? Maybe they might say, "You know what, we're not going to contend next year. Yao's going to be out most of the year, maybe even all of the year...do we just let T-Mac's money come off the books and not sign Ron Artest to a two- or three-year deal worth $10 million a year so we can have room in 2010 to rebuild?"</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>If the Rockets understand that they can't build around Yao anymore, why sign Ron Artest? Now, I'm speculating. But after talking with some people around the league and some agents, why sign Ron Artest to a $10 million-a-year deal?</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b><u>Rodda</u>: How do the Cavaliers go about getting him, though, Chris?</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b><u>Broussard</u>: Then you look at the teams with money. Sacramento, do they want Artest? They're not winning anything any time soon. </b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b><u>Rodda</u>: Been there, done that, right?</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b><u>Broussard</u>: Atlanta? They're all right at the three and on the wing. Do they bring Ron there? Portland has Turkoglu in their sights. Toronto? I don't really think Ron's a fit there. Memphis? No. Oklahoma City? No.</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>It sounds crazy, but Ron Artest, if Houston doesn't re-sign him, he may have to settle for the midlevel. I just mentioned all the teams that are out there, and this is from talking to a lot of people from around the league who themselves are kind of reading the situation. But you've got to wonder who's giving him more than the midlevel exception. Detroit, I don't think they're bringing them in there after the brawl.</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b><u>Rodda</u>: So the Cavaliers, with their midlevel available, they might be a team, if that's what he has to settle for, that he'd be a good fit for.</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b><u>Broussard</u>: He's going to have to go for the money because this is probably his last contract. But if he doesn't get more than a midlevel exception, I know he would love to play with LeBron and Shaq. And again, years are important to him, but he would at least consider a one-year deal. And for Cleveland, you probably want to do it for a year because you don't want to eat up all of your cap space for 2010.</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>I'm just throwing out other possibilities because now it's Yao. A couple of days ago, Villanueva was a pipedream. But things are happening that are opening up a lot of options for the Cavaliers. </b></font><br /></blockquote><br />Ron Artest has been a favorite Cavalier target of mine since early in the 2005-06 season when the Indiana Pacers were shopping him. At this point, however, a one-year deal would not be ideal because the Cavs would not have his Bird Rights after this season. However, it would certainly be the one move to completely put the Cavs over the top for next year while still maintaining cap flexibility in 2010 for Chris Bosh, who looks to have emerged as the clear-cut target for the Cavaliers' front office.<br /><br />But Villanueva gives them that young piece for now and the future. Heck, signing Villanueva for the midlevel and possibly letting Anderson Varejao walk (and promoting Darnell Jackson into the rotation as the backup four) would still give the Cavs more than enough cap space to sign Bosh next summer. <br /><br />So what do you think, Cavs fans? Villanueva or Artest? Both are unrestricted, and both are reported to want to come to Cleveland badly. If you had the choice, who do you sign and why?]]></description>

            <title>Charlie Villanueva Now Unrestricted, Cavs Interested</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<div align="center"><a href="http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=charlie%20villanueva&amp;iid=4106953" target="_blank"><img src="http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/5/8/f/7/PicImg_NBA_FEB_22_bc8a.JPG?adImageId=1750075&amp;imageId=4106953" alt="NBA: FEB 22 Nuggets at Bucks" width="500" border="0" height="350" /></a><script type="text/javascript" src="http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js"></script>

<br /></div><div align="center"><i><b>Could Charlie Villanueva be heading to the Cavs?</b></i><br /></div><br />In a surprising turn of events on Monday, Bucks GM John Hammond <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4295423">has decided not to extend the qualifying offer to forward Charlie Villanueva</a>, now making him an unrestricted free agent. If the Bucks would have offered Villanueva the $4.6 million qualifying offer then Villanueva would have been restricted. But now the situation has changed and Villanueva is in the driver's seat, instead of the Bucks.<br /><font style="font-size: 1em;"><b><br /></b></font><blockquote><p><font style="font-size: 1em;"><b>The Milwaukee Bucks have made qualifying offers to restricted free agent guard Ramon Sessions and forward Ersan Illyasova, but will not make an offer to forward Charlie Villanueva -- allowing one of their top scorers from last season to become an unrestricted free agent.</b></font></p><p><font style="font-size: 1em;"><b>. . . . . . . . . . .<br /></b></font></p><p><font style="font-size: 1em;"><b>Bucks general manager John Hammond said Monday that the team
already had sent offers to Sessions and Ilyasova, giving Milwaukee the
right to match any contract offers from other teams. But with Tuesday's
deadline for teams to make offers to their restricted free agents
looming, the team decided not to make an offer to Villanueva.</b></font></p></blockquote>With the news of Villanueva opting out a big surprise, <a href="http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2009/06/cleveland_cavaliers_target_unr.html">Cavs beat writer Brian Windhorst addressed Villanueva and the interest in him</a>.<br /><br /><blockquote><b>In a move that was considered shocking in corners Monday, the Milwaukee
Bucks decided not to offer young free-agent power forward Charlie
Villanueva a qualifying offer to make him a restricted free agent. He
now will be unrestricted, which makes him significantly easier to sign
because the Bucks will not have matching rights. According to sources,
Villanueva now will be one of the Cavs' free-agent targets when teams
are allowed to speak with them Wednesday.</b><br /></blockquote>Perhaps what will be the biggest hints where Villanueva will go, <a href="http://twitter.com/CV31">were his Twitter messages over the past few days</a>.<br /><br /><blockquote><b><span class="status-body"><span class="entry-content">well, twitterland

Well if any of the info coming from the media is any indication, then it certainly looks like he will be.<br />]]></description>

            <title>2009 Offseason Whirlwind</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana">Man, this week had been filled with some HUGE trades. Let's talk about 'em.</p>

<p>For my thoughts on <b>Richard Jefferson</b> going to <b>San Antonio</b>, check out this <a href="http://mvn.com/thenolookpass/2009/06/spurs-reloaded.html"><b>entry</b></a>.</p>

<p><B>SHAQUILLE O'NEAL TO CLEVELAND and SASHA PAVLOVIC AND BEN WALLACE TO PHOENIX</b><br />
Okay, so this may possibly be the biggest trade of the offseason... and the people are making me dislike <b>Cleveland</b> all over again because they're pencilling in <b>L.A. and Cleveland</b> for the <b>2010 NBA Finals</b>. Sure, O'Neal makes them tougher inside but he's not the entire solution. First off, we wonder if they can co-exist. Second, let's see how they mesh. LeBron loves to drive in and there's going to be a <b>7'1", 350-pound guy</B> inside the paint at all times.</p>

<p>But what really needs fixing is that they need more than just <b>isolation plays</b>. And, in turn, better decision-making. This stuff falls on the coach. Part of what doomed Cleveland is that they took some terrible, terrible shots. LeBron's not the greatest three-point shooter in the world and, at times, he would just chuck one up without warning. His teammates would do the same thing. Basically, while they can score, they weren't an <b>efficient scoring team</b> against <b>Orlando</b>. And while Shaq adds power to the frontline, they still need a wing scorer/slasher that can create. Yeah, I didn't explain that very well when we did our inaugural <b>8th Seed podcast</b> (check <a href="http://the8thsedd.com"><b>THAT PODCAST</b></a> out, by the way... and I'm not afraid to admit that I actually sucked it real bad in that cast).</p>

<p>As for <b>Phoenix</b>? <b>Steve Kerr</b> said that they're "a team in transition". That's never good news to the fans. With <b>Amare Stoudemire</b> being thrown around in trade rumors (which I don't get because they can still win 50 games with this team), I just wonder if Phoenix has decided to start all over. What a waste. I would think <b>Steve Nash</b> would want out, too, for a better shot at a title.</p>

<p>For other viewpoints of this trade, check out this <a href="http://mvn.com/thenolookpass/2009/06/talking-to-chicks-who-love-hoops-the-big-trade-piece.html"><b>Chicks Who Love Hoops</b></a> blog entry.</p>

<p><b>VINCE CARTER TO ORLANDO and COURTNEY LEE, TONY BATTIE, AND RAFER ALSTON TO NEW JERSEY</b><br />
I don't think this trade is as bad as some people make it out to be because I think <b>Orlando</b> is a strong enough team. However, Carter does need to adjust to being the #2 or #3 guy. He certainly fills their need on the wing position but will his head be in it? Carter's also been known to disappear a bit in the postseason. But who knows? While he was pretty good last season, maybe this motivates him even more? A change of scenery? What kind of Vince Carter are we getting here?</p>

<p><img src="http://mvn.com/thenolookpass/vince001.jpg"></p>

<p>As for the Nets' new pieces? Courtney Lee is pretty damn good and it sucks that he had to go. But he and <b>Devin Harris</b> will form a real good (HOT) backcourt. They might peddle Rafer Alston around because I'm sure he doesn't want to be an expensive back-up and Tony Battie is Tony Battie. New Jersey did accomplish freeing up MORE cap space after the shedding of Vinsanity's contract.</p>

<p>I think it works out better for Orlando if they can get <b>Hedo Turkoglu</b> back. Turkoglu was the jack-of-all-trades for Orlando (rebounding, passing, ball-handling, clutch shooting). If he leaves, I think Orlando will really miss him.</p>

<p><b>JAMAL CRAWFORD TO ATLANTA and SPEEDY CLAXTON AND ACIE LAW IV TO GOLDEN STATE</b><br />
Well, Crawford was just on his way out of G. State. <b>Don Nelson</b> and Crawford clash a lot. So Jamal had to go. But to get those bit pieces from Atlanta? I thought they could've done better. Where is Golden State going?</p>

<p>Now this represents a little conundrum for Atlanta. They sure as hell got more talented but where will Crawford fit in the equation? Is he willing to come off the bench as a potent sixth man (a la <b>Jason Terry</b> and <b>Manu Ginobili</b>)? </p>

<p><b>MIKE MILLER AND RANDY FOYE TO WASHINGTON and ETAN THOMAS, DARIUS SONGAILA, OLEXSIY PECHEROV, AND THE 5TH PICK (RICKY RUBIO) TO MINNESOTA</b><br />
Washington's a talented team that was just decimated with injuries last year. I believe they're a playoff team when healthy (ESPECIALLY <b>Gilbert Arenas</b>). Anyway, they fill their need in outside shooting with Mike Miller. I think Randy Foye's numbers were a bit inflated in Minnesota but he'll be a serviceable back-up guard (maybe even start if Arenas STILL isn't healthy). They are getting a bit crowded in the backcourt, though...</p>

<p>Minnesota just really cleaned house and was lucky to have <b>Ricky Rubio</b> drop to their laps for the 5th pick. But I'm trying to figure out their stance after they drafted <b>Jonny Flynn</b> right after Rubio. Their new players will help in the frontcourt but it's not like they'll set anything on fire. </p>

<p>By the way, the <b>New York Knicks'</b> draft pick, <b>Jordan Hill</b>? She sounds hot.</p>

            <title>Cleveland&apos;s Case Of Xenophobia, Kid Congo Edition</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=sports,%20sports,%20fear,unknown&amp;iid=252649" target="_blank"><img src="http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/0249/1d087d8d-f09e-41da-9a60-aaf9cb720673.jpg?adImageId=1687024&amp;imageId=252649" alt="Businesspeople Wearing Blindfolds" width="500" border="0" height="333" /></a><script type="text/javascript" src="http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js"></script><br /><i><b>Cleveland Cavalier fans all over the country right now.</b></i><br /><div align="left"><br />Xenophobia. (zěn'ə-fōb', zē'nə-) A person unduly fearful or contemptuous of that which is foreign, especially of strangers or foreign peoples.<!--//<br / / / / / / / / / / / / / / />//--><!--EOF_DEF--><br /><br />Cleveland fans, right now whether you recognize it or not, you're suffering Xenophobia. Hate to break it ya, but you are. Not from the fear of foreign people but from the fear of the unknown.<br /><br />The backlash and anger unleashed from picking Christian Eyenga, a.k.a. Kid Congo, with the 30th pick has been unreal. It's been pretty unanimous in the feeling that Kid Congo was a bad pick. <br /><br />But here's my question for the whole ordeal: how in the world can we, as fans, say that this was a bad pick, when we don't have the slightest clue about this kid? That's my main beef.<br /><br />We can say all we want that this was a terrible pick, Ferry's terrible, blah, blah, blah but how can we say that without seeing this kid in action? Sure there's <a href="http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Christian-Eyenga-5493/">prospect</a> <a href="http://draftday.nbadraft.net/players/christian-eyenga">profiles</a> on this kid, as well as <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTew2KzGH94">YouTube! highlights</a> of him too, but neither of them are nearly enough for any fan to form a well-developed opinion on the kid. <br /><br />At least with prospects like Sam Young, Chase Budinger, DaJuan Summers, etc., there is national exposure of them. We're able to see prospects like them on T.V., on highlight videos, during March Madness, etc. On top of that they're well-known prospects that have tons of information collected about them and there's pretty much a consensus among scouting services about their strengths, weaknesses and what type of player they project to be. With all the information available to us with those type of players, we're able to form a decently informed opinion of the kid and it's at the point where we can talk about and even judge them when they're pick if we want to (even though that's not smart, you get what I mean).<br /><br />With Eyenga, there is none of that. Which is why all the people bashing this pick are xenophobes (had to tie it in). They're afraid of the unknown, in this case Kid Congo, and because they're not too sure on him the automatic human reaction is to bash it, or be angry about the pick. The same thing happened last year with JJ Hickson. Not a lot of people knew a whole bunch about him and all of a sudden bashed him because they were ignorant when it came to the pick. The national media, message boards, and fans all over wanted guys like Kosta Kofous, Darell Arthur, Chris Douglas-Roberts, etc., because they were guys that people had a lot of information on and were able to make a decently informed opinion on.<br /><br />People are just like animals. When animals come into contact with something that they're unfamiliar with or not comfortable with, they automatically become suspicious, edgy and sort of protective. Similar to humans, when we come into contact with something unfamiliar, we become sort of protective, uncomfortable and scared. This is the same with Kid Congo: because we're unfamiliar with him, we become kind of uncomfortable and scared (which leads to anger). <br /><br />Before I go on any further, let me just say this: in no way am I trying to defend the pick by Danny Ferry. Heck <a href="http://mvn.com/cavalierattitude/2009/06/danny-ferry-you-screwed-this-draft-up.html">my first initial reaction was quite similar to Amar's</a>. But after thinking about it, I came to the conclusion that we can't really come to a judgment on this pick because we have no knowledge of the kid. So if we are ignorant on a certain subject, how can we say it's a bust or not? We can't, which is why I don't get the outrage by the Cavs fans across the nation.<br /><br />I know part of the outrage is about Kid Congo himself but it seems like most of the rage is directed towards not picking proven college players like Sam Young, DeJuan Blair, Chase Budinger or DaJuan Summers or at least better known "projects" like Derrick Brown. I can definitely see that though because, again, these are players that fans are more comfortable and know more about them.<br /><br />But let me say this: if anybody expects the 30th pick in the draft to be able to contribute his rookie year for a team like the Cleveland Cavaliers (66 win team last year, best record in the NBA, Central Division champions, made it to the Eastern Conference Finals, etc.) then they're crazy. Not to mention, the 30th pick in what was considered to be one of the weakest drafts in NBA history.<br /><br />Sure guys like Sam Young, DeJuan Blair, Chase Budinger are billed as "NBA ready" players who can contribute right away, but we're talking about the Cavs here. Not the Oklahoma City Thunder or the Minnesota Timberwolves; the Cleveland Cavaliers.<br /><br />With free agency still left along with trades still being allowed, I'd be willing to bet we add a minimum of two rotational players to the roster, if not more. So taking that into consideration, where does a rookie (30th pick in the draft) seem to fit in and contribute right away? Including our current roster and the likely addition of at least a couple of rotational players via trade and/or free agency, our rotation will probably look at least 9 deep. And that's not including guys like JJ Hickson, Darnell Jackson and maybe even Tarence Kinsey, who might get playing time this year. Do you guys realize Joe Smith, Wally Szczerbiak, Sasha Pavlovic and Daniel Gibson, really didn't see the floor that much versus the Magic? Joe Smith only played in 2 games of where he had 10 or more minutes. Sasha basically played two games of 20-minute ball and that&nbsp; was it for the series. Wally Szczerbiak had two DNP's and basically was forced to play the last 3 games because of the inefficiency of the bench. Daniel Gibson got 6 minutes the first 3 games before 64 minutes the next 3.<br /><br />Now it can be said Mike Brown screwed the pooch on who to play and who not to play but the point is, if he was forced to play veterans and those veterans didn't play much to begin with, how do you expect him to play a rookie who was picked 30th overall in the Eastern Conference Finals? Because really, let's get serious here: it doesn't matter what happens in the regular season anymore, it's all about the playoffs. And how in the world would you expect a rookie to contribute anything more than a couple minutes in the Eastern Conference Finals, let alone the Finals?<br /><br />I understand an argument can be made using Daniel Gibson and Courtney Lee as examples rookies playing big roles for their playoff teams and being picked late in the draft. But those types of cases happen very, very, very rarely. <br /><br />The bottom line is that Ferry really didn't see anyone who could contribute right away at #30, as he should have, and saw it worth the risk to take a flier on a guy who they see as having high potential then rather taking a guy who wouldn't likely contribute this year anyway.<br /><br />Aside from those points, the pick also goes deeper than that.<br /><br />Let's remember that all 1st round picks have guaranteed money being paid to them, basically as soon as they're picked. So basically, once they're picked they're locked into the rookie scale right away. The rookie scale for the 30th pick is $989k. So for a player that wasn't likely to contribute at all during his rookie season, the Cavs would have been paying around $1 million for him to sit the bench. Now I know there's a possibility that the rookie could have contributed but instead of that $1 million being paid for him to sit the bench, that $1 million can be allocated to different resources. It can helps us sign a free agent, he could helps us via trade, etc.<br /><br />Now I can understand why fans would say "well if Dan Gilbert is willing
to spend, then why is he worried about $1 million". But it's the fact
that he doesn't want to spend the money, it's just he wants to do it
wisely.<font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><span class="Estilo5 Estilo52 Estilo52 Estilo52"></span></font><br /><br />And before you go criticizing Dan Gilbert for being "cheap", look at what the Los Angeles Lakers did. They had the 29th and 42nd picks in the NBA draft. Instead of picking those players, they instead sold those picks to teams for money. Because like the Cavs, they figured that those players wouldn't likely be able to contribute right away and they were better served getting cash for those picks and helping them to sign free agents, or in their case re-sign Trevor Ariza and/or Lamar Odom. Now they are the NBA Champions but does that mean they're being cheap too? Or are they just being smart with their money? At least the Cavs will get a player out of their pick, instead of just giving it away.<br /><br />Now getting back to the players actually available at the pick, let's take an deeper look at them.<br /><br />Sam Young. Thought of as one of the safest picks in the draft and a guy who could contribute right away. Right now the Cavs need a defender first and foremost on the wing and he's billed to be a good defender. So how could this not be the perfect fit? Well right now I don't see how he has a position in the NBA. It's my belief that he's too small to guard most SFs and too slow to guard most SGs. So where does he play then? That's my problem. But if Ferry really would have wanted him, he would have gotten him. Let's not forget that Ferry and Pittsburgh coach, Jamie Dixon, are pretty tight and has pretty much all the information possible on him, and DeJuan Blair. So if he passed on him, it's probably for a good reason.<br /><br />DeJuan Blair. A steal at #30, right? Where does he fit? He can't play with Varejao because that would be a disaster offensively. Not to mention, why draft another undersized forward/center after drafting two last year, in Darnell Jackson and JJ Hickson? Or how about our newest acquisition, Shaquille O'Neal. How would he fit in with him? Or better yet, what about those knees? <a href="http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/ian_thomsen/06/26/weekly.countdown/index.html">As one story in SI.com said</a>: "Most team doctors red-flagged him, which prevented the GMs from taking Blair in the first round."<br /><br />Derrick Brown. I certainly was a big proponent and was kind of upset that we didn't take him. But at the same time, he wasn't going to contribute now, as well as Eyenga, so why not take a flier on a guy with a very high ceiling who won't cost anything, as opposed to a guy who will cost you something and doesn't have as high of a ceiling?<br /><br />DaJuan Summers. He was another guy I liked but there were some questions on him. Why couldn't he put up better rebounding numbers? Why didn't he play any defense? Why couldn't he do anything else beside spot-up shoot? Why didn't he get "it"? Summers was a guy filled with potential but loaded with downside too.<br /><br />Chase Budinger. Probably not on the top of the list as far as guys the Cavs passed on but still up there. The problem with Budinger will never talent level, how athletic he is or how good of a player he is offensively. It's mentally and defensively where the questions are. So considering that, why would the Cavs take him if their biggest weakness on the wing is defense?<br /><br />Let's keep things in perspective here: this is the draft. Not free agency. Not trades. This is the draft. A championship caliber team like the Cavs doesn't make its major improvements through the draft. They do them through trades and in free agency. So why all of a sudden, is Ferry the worst general manager in the league? Just a few days beforehand he was the best after trading for Shaq.<br /><br />The point is that this is last in line as far as places we'd look to improve in. No guy was going to contribute right away so why not take a flier on a guy that could possibly be better than anybody else on the board at the time. Is it guaranteed? No. Would Sam Young, Derrick Brown, DeJuan Blair be safer picks? Yeah probably. But none of them have the type of potential that Eyenga has.<br /><br />And yes GMs far too often get caught up with the potential word but the Cavs are in a position where they can take a low-risk move like this and hope that it pans out.<br /><br />The 30th pick in the draft isn't going to make or break our chances at a title and it isn't going to make LeBron going to go to New York. What will though is what we do via trade and through free agency, which we should be more worried about. Those are places where we can't afford to take high risks or make mistakes. Those are places we should be worried about, not the draft.<br /><br />The whole point of this article is basically for some new perspective on the situation. Will this kid turn out to be a good pro? Who knows. But that's the whole point: who knows. We can't judge or criticize a situation by knowing very little on the subject at hand.<br /><br />So kick back, relax, and let's see where Eyenga and this draft class is 3 years down the road from now, because that's when it'll be fair to assess this draft. Not now, only 2 days after the draft. And not 1 month into the season either. But 3 years.<br /><br />I know it's frustrating to see us pass on some guys that would have been safer, more comfortable picks for the fans but let's wait and see what happens the rest of the off-season before we go freaking out.<br /><br />But just remember one thing about Eyenga: he is Kid Congo.<br /><br />And oh yeah...don't be a Xenophobe.<br /><script language="javascript">AC_FL_RunContent = 0;</script><script src="http://cache.lexico.com/js/AC_RunActiveContent.js" language="javascript"></script><script type="text/javascript">var interfaceflash = new LEXICOFlashObject ( "http://cache.lexico.com/d/g/speaker.swf", "speaker", "17", "15", "<a href="\"http://dictionary.reference.com/audio.html/ahd4WAV/X0004700/xenophobia\"" target="\"_blank\""><img src="\"http://cache.lexico.com/g/d/speaker.gif\"" border="\"0\"" / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /></a>", "6");interfaceflash.addParam("loop", "false");interfaceflash.addParam("quality", "high");interfaceflash.addParam("menu", "false");interfaceflash.addParam("salign", "t");interfaceflash.addParam("FlashVars", "soundUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fcache.lexico.com%2Fdictionary%2Faudio%2Fahd4%2FX%2FX0004700.mp3&clkLogProxyUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fdictionary.reference.com%2Fwhatzup.html&t=a&d=d&s=di&c=a&ti=1&ai=51359&l=dir&o=0&sv=00000000&ip=446ebdd1&u=audio"); interfaceflash.addParam('wmode','transparent');interfaceflash.write();</script><noscript><a
