Free Agent SG Analysis

With Ben Gordon set to join Detroit, the Chicago Bulls look set to hand the starting shooting guard spot to John Salmons, with Kirk Hinrich being asked to provide backup for both him and point guard Derrick Rose. Hinrich could still be traded yet, but I think it is likelier that he stays (not to mention that, if this team is serious about becoming more defensively oriented, Hinrich would fit the bill better than the other guards we have). Either way, the Bulls still need another serviceable guard, and current option Anthony Roberson is not a viable option. If one of those three were to get hurt, or if Luol Deng were injured again and Salmons had to move to small forward, would the Bulls really be able to afford giving Roberson 20 minutes a game? With that in mind, I've decided to take a look at some of the unrestricted free agent shooting guards on the market who could fill in if needed. Feel free to offer your own opinions or trade ideas in the comments.

Matt Barnes (G-F)

08-09 Per 36
Min. Stats: 13.6 Pts, 7.3 Rbds,
3.7/2.2 Ast-TO ratio, 42.3% FG, 34.3% 3Pt

Upside:
Decent scoring off bench, versatile, match-up problems as a guard,
solid rebounding as a guard

Downside:
Not a good defender, career inefficiency (career 12.4 PER, when
average is about 15.0), mediocre passer

Verdict:
For $2 million tops and one year, this might work out well, but, if
we're truly going for a team oriented around defense, this isn't the
guy we need.

Rashad McCants (SG)

08-09 Per 36 Min. Stats:
18.1 Pts, 3.6 Rbds, 2.2/2.1 Ast-TO ratio, 39.3% FG, 33.3% 3Pt

Upside:
Dependable scoring off the bench, athletic, usually not such a poor
shooter (43.1% career FG%)

Downside:
Poor shooting last year, career inefficiency (career 12.9 PER), poor
Ast-TO ratio, will likely make $3 million or more next season

Verdict:
Better scorer than Barnes, but a poorer shooter with less
versatility, and, ultimately, not worth the money he'll command on
the FA market.

Marquis Daniels (G-F)

08-09 Per 36 Min. Stats: 15.5
Pts, 5.3 Rbds, 2.4/2.0 Ast-TO ratio, 45.1% FG, 20.0% 3Pt

Upside: Good
scorer, versatile, can log big minutes

Downside:
Average defender, fairly one-dimensional, likely to be expensive
(almost $7 million last year)

Verdict:
He seems like a poor man's John Salmons, but he's probably going to
be paid as much as Salmons, so he's not worth it.

Anthony Parker (SG)

08-09 Per 36 Min. Stats:
11.7 Pts, 4.3 Rbds, 3.7/1.6 Ast-TO ratio, 42.6% FG, 39.0% 3Pt

Upside:
Low turnover rate, good leader, high basketball IQ, good range
(career 45.8 FG% and 41.4 3PT%)

Downside:
Well past his prime, slowing on both ends (particularly on D), 34
years old

Verdict:
If he commands anywhere near the salary he made this past season,
which was over $4.5 million, then I say hell no. If he settles for
less than $2 million, I would be happy to have him for a year.

Rodney Carney (G-F)

08-09 Per 36 Min. Stats:
14.4 Pts, 3.8 Rbds, 0.8/1.3 Ast-TO ratio, 41.6% FG, 35.0% 3Pt

Upside:
Versatile, decent scorer off the bench, low turnover rate, bargain
price (likely less than $2 million)

Downside: Lack
of experience, mediocre shooter, fairly one-dimensional player

Verdict:
The price isn't too bad, but we can likely do better.

Keith Bogans (G-F)

08-09 Per 36 Min. Stats:
10.3 Pts, 5.7 Rbds, 1.8/1.2 Ast-TO ratio, 36.7% FG, 33.9% 3Pt

Upside: Above
average defensively for a backup, versatile

Downside:
Low FG%, limited abilities

Verdict:
We should be able to do better.

Luther Head (PG-SG)

08-09 Per 36 Min. Stats:
10.8 Pts, 3.8 Rbds, 4.2/1.8 Ast-TO rate, 38.2% FG, 37.0% 3Pt

Upside:
Good range, can play both guard spots, decent Ast-TO ratio

Downside:
Poor shooting year in 08-09, mediocre defender, small for a SG

Verdict:
For less than $1 million I would say go for it, but he wouldn't offer
much to the team.

Von Wafer (G-F)

08-09 Per 36 Min. Stats:
17.9 Pts, 3.3 Rbds, 2.1/1.7 Ast-TO ratio, 44.7% FG, 39.0% 3Pt

Upside:
Good bench scorer, impressive range, showed solid improvement last
season, respectable on defense

Downside:
Undersized at SF, limited passing and rebounding

Verdict: Was
paid under $1 million last year, but will command more on the FA
market. If he's cheap, he would be a great asset to add to the team.
Look for multiple teams to go after him.

Gerald Green (G-F)

08-09 Per 36 Min. Stats: 19.1
Pts, 5.2 Rbds, 1.4/3.2 Ast-TO ratio, 43.9% FG, 30.4% 3Pt

Upside:
Freakishly athletic, big as a guard, versatile

Downside:
Hasn't played big minutes in recent years, high TO rate, limited as a
SG, range needs to improve

Verdict:
His athleticism is exciting, but he's much more of a SF than a SG, so
he's probably not a good fit for the Bulls.

Wally Szczerbiak (G-F)

08-09 Per 36 Min. Stats: 12.2
Pts, 5.5 Rbds, 1.9/1.3 Ast-TO ratio, 45.0% FG, 41.1% 3Pt

Upside: Very
good 3Pt shooter, shoots for high percentage, versatile, experienced
in playoffs, above-average efficiency (career 16.0 PER)

Downside:
One-dimensional, grossly overpaid last season (nearly $14 million)

Verdict:
He'll certainly be taking a huge pay cut wherever he ends up, but not
enough to make him a financially sound investment for the Bulls.

Ronald "Flip" Murray (PG-SG)

08-09 Per 36 Min. Stats: 17.8
Pts, 3.1 Rbds, 2.9/2.3 Ast-TO ratio, 44.7% FG, 36.0% 3Pt

Upside:
Good bench scorer, decent defense, can play either guard spot

Downside:
Limited as a PG, small for a SG, mostly one-dimensional

Verdict: He
made $1.5 million last season, and, if he were willing to play one
year as a Bull for that salary, I would give him a chance.

Final Verdict:
While none of these options impresses me, I would choose between Von Wafer
and Flip Murray, as all of the other options are likely to be either
too expensive, poor fits, or just lack enough talent to warrant
serious interest. The price, to me, has to be absolutely no higher
than about $2.25 million a year, otherwise we may as well go after
someone worthy of the starting role. The Bulls have been rumored to have some interest in Allen Iverson, although he has reportedly indicated a desire to play for the Memphis Grizzlies and received interest from the Miami Heat. I personally think he would cost too much, and I'm not sure our offense would develop with his shoot-first attitude in the mix. Another possibility is to look into trading for Phoenix Suns SG Jason RIchardson, who could be on the trade block. He could replace most of Gordon's offense and provide a bit more defense than Gordon did, but he stands to make well over $13 million the next two seasons, so I would balk at that price. At any rate, it's time to explore the shooting guard market.

Big NBA News: Feat. Josh Childress (Iverson Going for Memphis?)

Hello, and welcome to another edition of Big NBA News. We got some good stuff in for us today so let's go. These are some pretty big rumors and I really do think these are the ones you definitely don't want to miss!

Mike Bibby

Atlanta Hawks point guard was given some rumors that he may go to Philadelphia to play for the Sixers.

But Sixers fans, you might want to stop cheering and put your hands down. The Sixers aren't interested in Bibby, according to the Inquirer.

But heck, it would be real nice for Philly to get him. But as for right now, he's chilling in Atlanta.

He is also looking to bring the Hawks to the playoffs again and hopefully passing the second round and not getting killed by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

My bad, Atlanta. Sorry for bringing back bad memories.

Ricky Rubio

Jeez Ricky!

I really don't understand what's the point of him coming to the NBA after reading this about him going back to Spainto play proffessionaly for two more years!

But it won't matter because if he wants to return to the NBA, the Timberwolves still hold the rights to him. So Ricky, it really doesn't matter if you don't want to play for Minny, just try to make the best of it, okay?

Nah, he won't.

Hedo Turkoglu

Hedo Turkoglu, he recently opted out of his contract with the Orlando Magic, shouldn't be really happy right now.

The Toronto Raptors were about to give him a $60M contract but they decided not to, according to The Star.

We'll see what happens, maybe Toronto be decide to again. And teams going for a bid?

As of right now, not many. Sorry, Hedo. Want to go back to Orlando? Nah, I really think he doesn't. Let him wait, he'll get the deal and the team he wants.

New Orleans Hornets

The Times-Picayune reports that the New Orleans Hornets are deciding to acquire the following free agents:

Mikki Moore (right)

Maceo Boston

Jake Voskuhl

ESPN.com reports that the Hornets are also taking a look at former-Hornet, Brandon Bass.

Let's see who they pick because all of the players look interesting to me. Moore might fit well.

I don't know who to pick, it'll be a tough decision. But hey, why not , sign them all. But nah, it'll probably be a not-so-smart idea.

Josh Childress

The Journal Times reports that the Milwaukee Bucks are trying out Josh Childress, who the last NBA team he played with was the Atlanta Hawks after moving to the Olympioacos.

Childress has been called by many NBA teams, and he does look like he can fit nicely with the team after that trade that sent Richard Jefferson to the San Antonio Spurs.

Here is the biggest news of the day! Now that I have made a new website called MemphisBlueBears.com, a site about the Memphis Grizzlies (I am a bigger Indiana Pacers fan, though, of course), I know have to write some Grizzlies news.

Well, Allen Iverson announced that he wanted to play for the Memphis Grizzlies, ESPN reports. Here's what Iverson said on his Twitter:

"I'm a free agent, healthy again, and capable of signing with any team. My only preference will be [is] to play for a coach that knows what I bring to the table and that I am going to bring it every night! Someone who best knows how to utilize my skills to make our team the very best it can be. For those of you who thought I was done, think again."

Whew, A.I. had a lot to say there to all of his fans on Twitter (more than 16,000 to be exact, dang!). Let's see how everything turns out.

He looks good with the Grizzlies as a new "Big Three" may approach with him, Rudy Gay, and O.J. Mayo. Now that would be nice. We'll see how it turns out, as of right now, Iverson is probably chilling (and why wouldn't he?).

Q-Rich and I at Season Ticket Holders event, circa 2003

Dear Diary,

Zach Randolph's contract(33.3M over 2 years) was deemed immovable. Who would want this guy? Granted he's an automatic 20/10, his reputation still precedes him. So, let's just forget about this pipe dream, right? WELL, NOT SO FAST.

Come to find out, Lady Luck spent last night in the Clippers' hotel room and voila - out came Quentin Richardson. You heard right. The LA Clippers and Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to swap players, and can officially do so after the moratorium on July 8th. It was a week ago when this same Memphis team came knocking on the Clippers' door with a Marko Jaric/Greg Buckner for Z-Bo proposal which was ultimately nixed by the dirtbag, Donald T. Sterling. That left the majority of Clipper Nation fuming, pondering why Sterling would turn down a deal to SAVE MONEY. I'll admit, I was angry at the entire front office for not making it happen, and hearing Dunleavy say a deal wasn't even so close to being made and Neil Olshey state, "you don't trade 20/10 guys." Frustation was an understatement. Now, overjoyed is an understatement.

That said, Q-Rich is past his prime. Once a rising star, he cashed in with the Phoenix Suns as a restricted free agent and I thought the guy was a potential All-Star. But then...he was traded to the Knicks. Multiple back surgeries later, Q is a shell of his former self. I don't know how he feels about coming back to LA, but one would assume after all he's been through, his perspective on his career and life in general has changed and he's just happy to still be able to play in the NBA. In terms of on-court contribution, anything we can get out of him would be a bonus, and considering he's in a contract year, that may be extra motivation. Plus the headknock, headbang, or whatever you call it, is back.

More importantly for the Clippers is the financial situation. Q is set to make 9.4M(according to HoopsHype) in his contract year and the trade has allowed the Clips to obtain a 7.3M trade exception. If we let him, Marcus Camby, Ricky Davis, and Steve Novak expire...you're talking about over 20M in cap space. Just in time for the 2010 Free Agent Bonanza. This is the real coup of this deal. Technically speaking, we could throw an offer to D-Wade, Joe Johnson, or dare I say...LeBron James?!? Bottom line, the Clippers have set themselves up nicely for the future in 1)Blake Griffin dominating the post all he wants and 2)luring a top notch free agent to play alongside a talented youth corp in the beautiful City of Angels.

Sincerely,

Illastrate

P.S. I'll miss you Z-Bo, and will be cheering for you when you come back to LA.

Varejao Opts Out, Becomes Unrestricted Free Agent

Could Anderson Varejao be headed elsewhere this summer?

Dan Fegan strikes again.

In what is no surprise to anyone who has followed the Cavs over the past year or so, Anderson Varejao has decided to exercise his player option and opt out.

Forward Anderson Varejao
did not exercise the final year of his contract on Tuesday, making him
an unrestricted free agent this summer, a source close to the player
told ESPN.com's Chad Ford.

By opting out of his deal for next season, Varejao is leaving $6.2 million of guaranteed money on the table to try and test would could be a bare market this year.

It's been reported that Varejao could be seeking a contract with a per year earning of upwards of $9 million. In this economy with very few teams having that type of cap space, it's unlikely Varejao will get an offer that is around his asking price.

Right now it looks like there will be 5-6 teams that could challenge the Cavs for Varejao's services and offer a lucrative contract. Those teams with significant cap room are: Detroit Pistons ($19 million), Oklahoma City Thunder ($13 million), Memphis Grizzlies ($13 million), Sacramento Kings ($7 million), Portland Trail Blazers ($9 million), and Toronto Raptors ($9 million, if they let Parker, Marion and Graham walk).

Out of those teams it looks like Varejao may get a look from 3-4 teams.

The Pistons have bigger fish to fry than Varejao and are looking at some top free agents.

The Toronto Raptors are looking for a perimeter scorer and it's questionable how far under the cap they'll get at this point.

The Oklahoma City Thunder look like they want to add a young player and make a splash in free agency, so Varejao might be a back-up plan with them needing some bigs there.

The Memphis Grizzlies were rumored to be interested in Varejao last off-season so if things fall through with their other targets (reportedly David Lee) then some of that interest could be re-kindled.

The Sacramento Kings were adamant about including Varejao in the Mike Bibby talks a couple years ago and that could parlay the Kings into offering all of their cap space to Varejao should their other options dry up.

The Portland Trail Blazers have reportedly been looking for toughness and defense to backup Aldridge and Varejao would be a great fit there. The only problem is that he might be too expensive.

The good news for the Cavs is that Varejao isn't going to garner a ton of interest from the teams with major cap room and that Varejao isn't looking like anyone's primary option.

While the Cavs can't match any offer because Varejao is unrestricted, the Cavs do look like they're going to put re-signing Varejao as their #1 priority and should get it done if Varejao keeps his demands reasonable (you never know with Dan Fegan).

It's been speculated that the Cavs might be willing to pay up to $9 million per year for Varejao but that might change once he hits the open market and the Cavs see what's available.

The right thing for the Cavs to do would be to re-sign Varejao at a reasonable price.

(P.S - And no, re-signing Varejao to a long-term deal doesn't mean the Cavs won't have 2010 cap space and not be able to sign Bosh. The 2010 cap space is an illusion and there's no way the Cavs will be able to have enough cap room to field a competitive team. So don't be worrying about that.

The problem with Varejao will be determining his value to the team. While I'm sure Fegan and Varejao see it as one thing, I'm also sure the Cavs see at as another.

Varejao is a good player but he's not worth $8.5-$9.5 million a year. Maybe if it was on a short-term deal (2-3 years), then it could be possible. But there's no way I can see the Cavs paying him that type of money over a long commitment.

Varejao's worth is probably in the $7.5 million range (give or take a half million) for a decent amount of years.

If Varejao and Fegan can't come to grips with reality, then the Cavs will probably be forced to either do a one-year deal at a high rate or sign-and-trade Varejao.

While the Cavs may not want to sign-and-trade Varejao, it may ultimately come down to that.

The one good thing is that Danny Ferry and Dan Fegan have since repaired their relationship since they hit rocky times last summer while negotiating Varejao's previous contract. Having a good working relationship is critical in working with agents and crossing the line when the two parties start getting into uncomfortable territories.

So will Varejao end up staying with the Cavs? Right now it's anybody's guess but with the way the market looks and how bad the Cavs want Varejao back, it looks like it's in the Cavs favor.

NBA Outsider: Memphis Grizzlies Draft Follow Up

3 Shades of Blue tells how this years draft picks are not super stars but certainly upgrades.

WHEN THE DRAFT GIVES YOU LEMONS.....

The Memphis Grizzlies exercised all three of the picks with which they entered the 2009 NBA draft-nos. 2, 27, and 36, selecting Hasheem Thabeet, Demarre Carroll, and Sam Young. Sure, when the year 2020 comes around, the potential for this year's draft crop to be viewed as one of the best ever is pretty low-but as the title states, the draft might give you lemons...and sometimes the lemonade takes a bit longer to make and isn't quite as good as Grandma's on a 90-degree day, but it should still be pretty tasty.

What Michael Heisley has stated many times is that he wants to field a more defensive-oriented team (a philosophy with which I heartily agree), and this draft bears his mark in bold ink. Thabeet, Carroll, and Young are all known as defensive standouts at their respective positions, and each showed that he deserved that recognition at a high level in college. The lower picks, particularly, just absolutely reek (in a good way) of players that Heisley and Hollins (and we hope Wallace) will just love-energy, wingspan, tenacity, and leaveitonthefloorism. All three picks represent a talent upgrade for a team desperately in need of such, and it could be said that the players they will replace (Darko Milicic, Quinton Ross, Greg Buckner, Darius Miles...wow what a list, huh??) were/are not exactly known as "winners wherever they may roam" in the NBA. The optimal outcome of this draft will be that these three fresh acquisitions will have a much greater hunger to make a lasting mark on the NBA through hard work, dedication, and, we hope, much success in a Grizzlies uniform.

Danny Ferry: You Screwed This Draft Up

Far be it for me to be a Negative Nancy.

Last year, when the Cavs selected little-known power forward J.J. Hickson from N.C. State, the masses were up in arms. They didn't know Hickson. Picking him at 19th overall was cause for an uproar. People automatically labeled him a bust. They wanted a wing player. Chris Douglas-Roberts, they said. Bill Walker, I said (or was saying before that draft).

But after the pick was made, I came on here and defended Ferry, Hickson, and that pick. I liked it. Here is exactly what I had to say about the Hickson pick immediately after it was made amidst the mass disappointment:

In 31 games with the Wolfpack, Hickson achieved double-figure scoring
25 times and reached 20 points on seven occasions. Hickson also notched
10 double-doubles.

All that...as a freshman.

Which is why you should be excited.

This pick was all about building on a core group of young players for
the future. Leave the "LeBron/Jay-Z" rumors to the clowns who have
nothing better to do with their lives. The Cavs can't live in constant
fear of LeBron, and they have to make the best pick for today as well
as tomorrow. And based on the kind of player Hickson can become within
the next five years, they certainly did that on Thursday night.

Today, in the wake of the 2009 NBA Draft, I cannot say that I maintain the same attitude. Because I know that Ferry effed up. And effed up badly.

That's because when Ferry selected Christian Eyenga, a 6'6" swingman out of Congo, with the 30th pick of the draft, there were better players available. He didn't -- for a fact, actually -- get a guy who could contribute right away. And even worse, he picked a guy that might have still been around when the Cavs picked again at #46.

These aren't the Oklahoma City Thunder, Memphis Grizzlies, or Sacramento Kings. These are the Cleveland Cavaliers. You know, the same team that made massive headlines yesterday after acquiring Shaquille O'Neal? The same team that has The King? The same team that has to win and win now in order to please said King?

Eyenga wasn't even expecting to be drafted, let alone get drafted in the first round with a guaranteed contract. Hell, even he seemed shocked out of this world when his name was called. Even David Stern was a little surprised (as if to say, "What the F, Ferry? I pretty much forced Steve Kerr to hand over Shaq to you and you screw up less than 24 hours later?").

Here's what draftexpress.com's live blog said when the Cavs made their selection:

10:25
Cleveland locks up the [1st] round with Christian Eyenga? This is an
insane pick. Eyenga put his name into this draft hoping not to get
picked period, and now he goes in the first round? Over DeJuan Blair
and Sam Young? Wow. It looks like Eyenga's plan to avoid the first round salary scale definitely backfired.

Last year was a good time for a project/developmental pick. The Cavs were 45-37, and the Hickson pick had to be made. The Cavs badly needed a young frontcourt player. Hickson was the best one available. Some considered it a reach, but it probably wasn't considering that Hickson wouldn't have fallen much further.

This year, the Cavs got a player in Eyenga who will not contribute the way Hickson did last year. Here's a guy that will probably be stashed away overseas for a year, maybe two. And even worse, the Cavs could have gotten a much better player to fit the very need that they probably want Eyenga to fill.

His name is Sam Young.

I thought that the Cavs would have had to trade up to get Young. Many mocks had him going as high as #20 to Utah. Some on draft morning even had him going 18th overall to Minnesota. But Young, for whatever reason, fell all the way to the Cavs' pick at #30. And the stars were aligned for a match made in heaven, a Godsend for the Cavs.

Except Ferry failed to cooperate.

Young wound up going just six picks later to Memphis at 36th overall. But the Cavs whiffed on a tremendous opportunity to pick an NBA-ready rookie who would be ready to contribute right away. They did the same damn thing last year when they passed up on Courtney Lee, but again, picking a young big man was necessary and Hickson's selection was easily justifiable.

A year later, don't even bring up the word "justifiable" to describe Ferry's draft-day skills. As someone who lives in Portland, I've seen a team use the draft as the single avenue to build its way back up and take a 21-win team in 2006 to a 54-win team in 2009. So I know it can be done.

The Cavs need a player to help them win now. Christian Eyenga won't even be on the roster next year, let alone rotation.

And this just adds to the fact that the Cavs are failing miserably in adding young talent around LeBron James. ESPN.com's Chad Ford recently wrote that when 2010 comes around, there will be no basketball reason for LeBron to stay in Cleveland. There will be no young wingman that he can form a legendary Jordan-Pippen 1-2 punch with. Mo Williams just isn't that guy. Shaq is 37 and might even be gone after this year.

That's not to say that Sam Young would have been the single reason to convince LeBron to stay in Cleveland, but at least the Cavs would have started to build a core of nice young role players to grow with LeBron and fit around him. Young is 24, the same age as LeBron, so he would be able to complement James for the rest of his career.

Add a guy like Young to other young guys like Mo, Delonte West, Daniel Gibson, Anderson Varejao, and Hickson, and you're finally starting to piece together some nice young parts that can help form the foundation for this team.

And anyone using this draft's "weakness" as an excuse should just stop right now. Every single draft -- every single draft -- has guys who can be core rotation players right off the bat. Did you know that 17 of the 30 second-round picks from a year ago made an NBA team this past season? Many even received playing time. None of those two will apply to the Cavs' first round pick from this year!

Speaking of second round picks, North Carolina's Danny Green was a great pick at #46, a pick the Cavs were supposed to give away in the Shaq deal. But as great as the Green pick was, his selection would have been unnecessary had Ferry taken Young and then settled for hs Congoan mancrush at 46.

So get excited about Shaquille O'Neal if you must. It's a move for 2009-10 and nothing more. But for an organization that has been obsessing itself over what happens after that, Thursday certainly wasn't a step in the right direction.

Trading Up for the #2 Pick?

If you are a Celtics fan, you've obviously heard of the rumor that
the Celtics are interested in the #2 pick of this year's NBA draft.
This would make this years' draft much more interesting for Celtic
fanatics as we currently only hold the #58 pick of the draft. Adding
the #2 pick of the draft would definitely bring a new face to the team
that would (hopefully) contribute right away, but who would we have to
give up to get this pick?

The one name that seems to be automatically assumed to be part of
any deal for the #2 pick is Rajon Rondo. To Celtics fans, if we are
trading Rondo for #2, we're selecting Ricky Rubio. For a team looking
to win titles with the window of opportunity one or two years away from
slamming shut, giving away a great (and on the verge of elite) point
guard in the league is preposterous. As the league knows, Rondo is a
jump shot away from becoming just about unguardable. And to trade him
for an unproven commodity at the most important position on the court
could be detrimental to the team's championship aspirations.

Looking at the deal from just a talent standpoint, this is an awful
deal for a Boston team that will only be content with winning the NBA
title. But when you put your GM hat on and see the fiscal burden Rajon
Rondo will undoubtedly bring to the payroll in the 2010-2011 season,
maybe moving Rondo will keep the Celtics roster more flexible in the
near future. If Rubio is as good as advertised, perhaps he can play
some serious minutes right away. He'll be on the floor with three
future Hall of Famers, so that should ease his transition to the NBA
game. But one thing he won't have is the chemistry that Rondo has
developed with the entire roster.

Do I really think the Celtics will trade up for the #2 pick in this
year's draft? No, not really. If we do, do I want to see Rondo on the
move? Absolutely not. But if Danny thinks that this is the best way to
continue to build the franchise, who am I to argue against it?
Personally, I think there is a much better chance that Danny grabs a
foreign player at #58 that will be a contributor in two years than the
Celtics trading for the #2 pick.

Original Publication Source

2009 NBA Mock Draft - Version 2.0

Tim Thomas Starts List of Interested FAs

Follow Me on Twitter!

MVN NBA Outsider Mock Draft: Fourth Pick

The Outsider crew at MVN always puts together well thought out pieces on what's going on in the NBA and how things are shaping up for the future of the NBA. Well, with the NBA Draft just 16 days away, they're putting together their Mock Draft by calling upon bloggers from all over the country to decide the most logical/likely pick.

This Mock Draft is being unveiled over the next week and can be followed by refreshing this page.

Well, they called upon me to advise on the picks of the Sacramento Kings (picks 4 and 23) and try to come up with the most logical/likely choice. The fourth pick article by me has been posted. The rules were to come up with who will be the likely choice based on who is off the board. Here are the picks so far:

1. Los Angeles Clippers -- Blake Griffin by Steve Perrin from Clip's Nation

2. Memphis Grizzlies -- Ricky Rubio by Chip Crain from 3 Shades of Blue

3. Oklahoma City Thunder -- Jordan Hill by Bill Ingram of Hoops World

And here is a snippet from my piece on who the Kings should take with the fourth pick:

With Ricky Rubio off the board and Hasheem Thabeet still on the board,
the Sacramento Kings now have a puzzling situation in front of them. Do
they take the perceived best player on the board with an absolute
monster of a man who blocks shots and clears the glass? Or do they tell
themselves that Jason Thompson and Spencer Hawes are the big men of the
future for this franchise and address their glaring and debilitating
hole at the point guard position? Do they believe in Donte Greene and
Francisco Garcia on the wings to play alongside Kevin Martin? Hell, do
they believe that Kevin Martin is ACTUALLY their franchise-building
guy?

Well, let's assume that they believe in Kevin Martin, Donte Greene
and Francisco Garcia. They have multiple years and roughly $60 million+
locked up in those guys and still have Andres Nocioni for the next
three years as well. This isn't a team that can currently afford to add
a bevy of wing players with so much money locked in to the guys they
already have. So now it comes down to grabbing the most intriguing and
sought-after big man left in the draft or putting someone immediately
in front of Beno Udrih who was one of, if not THE worst long-term
contract signing in team history. Well, the pick can't be Hasheem
Thabeet because it would endanger the growth of their big men and you
can't bank on the fact that you might be able to trade him for assets
or answers at point guard later on in the summer.

You can read the rest of the article and who the actual selection is here.

NBA Outsider Mock Draft: Memphis Grizzlies Select Ricky Rubio

NBA Outsider is hosting a 2009 NBA mock draft, where bloggers
from all over come together in an attempt to project the draft results
that will take place June 25th .

3 Shades of Blue's Chip Crain picks for the Memphis Grizzlies at No. 2. Despite the point guards' hopes the Memphis Grizzlies stick with Ricky Rubio out of Spain. Follow the mock draft here.

Ricky Rubio - DKV Jovenot

Memphis would love to trade this pick. Unfortunately
everyone in the league knows this so the offers aren't that exciting for
the 2nd pick in the draft. Throw on top of that the Grizzlies
reputation as a team more interested in the bottom line than the Win-Loss
column and offers to move up are not looking very good. That makes this a tough
pick for the Grizzlies on many levels. Rubio doesn't appear to want to
play in Memphis and his large buy-out means he doesn't have to accept
whatever team selects him. Can the Grizzlies afford to draft someone only to
have him remain in Spain? I think the Grizzlies can. If Rubio remains in Spain
then the Grizzlies hold onto his draft rights for a full year AFTER his
European contract ends. Since his buy-out is larger next season than this that
may mean a two year wait but Memphis has Mike Conley who is developing. After
two seasons the Grizzlies may not need the talented Spaniard and could more
easily trade him. After all he'll only be 20 yrs old at that time.

Rubio is a visionary point guard. Not often do teams get an
opportunity to draft an 18 yr old experienced PG who looks to pass first and
knows how to play defense. If this was any other team no one would even argue
about taking Rubio with this pick. If the Grizzlies feel the risk is too great
then James Harden and Hasheem Thabeet look to be the logical
choices. If the Grizzlies do trade down look for them to acquire University of
Memphis standout combo guard Tyreke Evans. Evans would be an excellent
backcourt mate to Conley and Mayo plus could energize local fans.

think the Lakers are a very balanced team. They are a team that can score and
their defense creates offense for them as well. I think LA has the edge; same
reason LA has had the edge in every series thus far. Their size up front is so
difficult for other teams to match up with. You have two seven-footers in Gasol
and [Andrew] Bynum, and throw in Ariza at six-eight and Odom and six-ten. It
gives Phil [Jackson] some real
flexibility with lineups and who's going to go in stretch of games. That's why
I think they have the advantage. Their interior defense is better than everyone
else. Their guards and their bigs can single cover - playing help defense makes
it difficult to score against.

Exploring the Cleveland Cavaliers' Offseason Options, Part 1: Sacramento's Kevin Martin

Remember back in the day when Danny Ferry was trying to land then-Kings point guard Mike Bibby but kept running into problems with hard-nosed Kings President Geoff Petrie?

Well, Ferry would be wise to start talking to Petrie again. And this time, the stakes would be much higher.

One of the big weaknesses of the Cavs that was exposed in the Orlando series was the lack of a legitimate second scoring option and size on the perimeter. Of course, 20-points-per-game shooting guards who are in excess of 6'6" and in the prime of their careers don't fall from the sky.

But Sacramento has Ohio native Kevin Martin.

You see, the Kings were the worst team in the league this past season. They have tried to build around Martin after giving him a monster five-year contract extension back in 2007, but they have failed miserably to do so. This past season, they were a league-worst 17-65. Instead of winning the draft lottery and landing a guy like Blake Griffin to pair with Martin, the Kings dropped out of the top three and ended up with the fourth pick.

In fact, since making the playoffs as an eighth seed in 2006 before getting dumped by San Antonio in the first round, the Kings have been 33-49 in 2006-07 and 38-44 in 2007-08 before their horrid season this past year. And after getting rid of guys like Bibby and Ron Artest, there is little doubt that it will be quite a long, long time before Sacramento is relevant again.

Which brings us to Martin.

The Kings have mistaken Martin for a franchise player. He is not. He is, however, the perfect sidekick for a big-name superstar. He missed a lot of games the past two seasons with injuries (ankle, groin), but the 6'7", 185-pounder averaged 24.6 points while shooting 41.5 percent from 3-point range in 51 games this past year. Despite playing in just 51 games, he hit 115 treys, which would have had him well over 150 three's for the year if he played in all 82 games.

Martin, however, hasn't played in 80 games in a season since the 2006-07 season. Even then, though, he averaged 20.2 points while shooting 47.3 percent from the floor and 38.1 percent from 3. It was definitely his breakout year and the year that earned him that big contract extension.

But ever since the Kings decided to make Martin their cornerstone, they began their run of missing the playoffs. This is a team that used to be a fixture in the postseason in at least some capacity. But their miss in '07 with 49 losses was their first absence from the playoffs since 1998. And in a brutally competitive Western Conference where teams usually need close to 50 wins to just make the playoffs as an eighth seed, Sacramento's misery seems likely to continue for a long, long time.

Martin, who is only 26, hasn't even been an All-Star in his career (and remember, neither was Mo Williams until he came to Cleveland), and he's on the books in Sacramento through the 2012-13 season, during which he'll make $13 million. He's due $10.2 million next season, and it could be in the Kings' interest to draft his replacement with the fourth pick in June and move him for another draft pick and some cap flexibility.

You guessed it: that's where the Cavs come in.

Petrie has a reputation as a hard-nosed negotiator who only does deals where he is the clear-cut winner, but lately he's had to bite the bullet in the Bibby and Artest deals. All Petrie gained from those trades was cap flexibility, draft picks, and young players.

Why, will you look at that: the Cavs can offer all three!

Should the Kings use the fourth pick to draft a shooting guard to replace Martin (like Arizona State's James Harden, Memphis' Tyreke Evans, or USC's DeMar DeRozan), they could use a young power forward to pair with him. And although Sacramento drafted Jason Thompson with the 12th pick last year, the Cavs can offer J.J. Hickson as a power forward should the Kings move the 6'11", 250-pound Thompson to center.

Cleveland can also give up the 30th pick in this draft. On top of that, they can give up Sasha Pavlovic's non-guaranteed contract at $5 million. It would also be in the Cavs' best interest to cough up Daniel Gibson, who has been up and down since his breakthrough 2007 postseason but is only 23-years old.

Hickson, Pavlovic, Gibson, and the 30th pick for Kevin Martin? Sign me up.

Ferry can't afford to keep being cute. I know he likes Hickson a lot. And I know he hates giving up draft picks, since his tenure in San Antonio showed that guys like Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili can be had late in the draft. But this is crunch time. The team needs talent now. There is no way in hell they can afford to wait for Hickson or some 30th pick who may or more likely may not pan out.

Mo Williams was a good player with good stats hidden on a bad team in a bad market in Milwaukee. LeBron turned him into an All-Star and, believe it or not, a household name. Kevin Martin, a good player with good stats hidden on a bad team in a bad market in Sacramento, would blossom into an All-Star in Cleveland.

Oh, and he's better than Mo. LeBron could turn Martin into a superstar. He could become what Scottie Pippen was to Jordan.

For the Kings, it gives them cap flexibility with Pavlovic's contract, where they can only give him the $1.5 million he's guaranteed and save the other $3.5 million instantly. They get a young piece in Hickson, another draft pick, and a good young role player in Gibson. Assuming they draft a star guard with the fourth pick, they would have a solid young nucleus parallel to what's being put together in Oklahoma City and Memphis.

Meanwhile, in Cleveland, you're definitely talking about 70 wins (come on, that's only four more from this past season). The only player that contributed to the 66-win season in that trade would be Gibson, who is replaceable. You're still keeping all of your starters, then moving Delonte West to the bench as the sixth man. You have a backcourt featuring explosive scorers in Martin and Williams, two guys that combined to average 42 points this past season (24 for Martin, 18 for Williams).

Yes, you'd still have issues up front with Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Anderson Varejao, and Ben Wallace's rotting corpse. But you still have the midlevel exception to work with, as well as Wallace's own expiring contract for 2010. That becomes more and more valuable as the trade deadline approaches.

Having two 3-point guns for a backcourt as explosive as that to put around LeBron James? You're talking about a team that would be hard to beat as well as a joy to watch. And I'd be far more comfortable putting a 6'7" Martin on a 6'10" Turkoglu than 6'3" Delonte West.

There would, however, be one problem with bringing Martin to Cleveland:

He wouldn't be able to wear his #23.

But that, for sure, would only be his problem.

2009 NBA Mock Draft - Version 2.0

A week and a half after publishing Version 1.0,
it's time to edit the first round of the draft. There will be many
picks that don't change, but there are definitely some risers and
fallers and that will be depicted in this version.

1. Los Angeles Clippers - Blake Griffin, F, Oklahoma

This is a no-brainer pick. He has been the #1 pick in this draft
since last November and has won every Player of the Year award you can
think of. I've already posted my thoughts on this pick
for the Clippers, so I won't go over it again. He's got the potential
to be a top power forward in the league in a few years, but also if he
doesn't develop much of an offensive game, could have already plateud.
I don't expect that to happen, so he will develop into a very good,
borderline great, power forward in the league.

2. Memphis Grizzlies - Ricky Rubio, G, Spain

Rubio's agent has already said they will do what they can to avoid him going to either Memphis or Oklahoma City,
but the same agent tried to do this with Yi last year and failed.
Ultimately, I think Rubio decides to play for whoever takes him and
Memphis, with the #2 pick, should take the 2nd best talent on the
board. People widely consider Rubio and Thabeet to round out the top-3
with Griffin, but I could see Memphis consider Jordan Hill at this pick
if they do not want to stunt the growth of Mike Conley, Jr. In the end,
Rubio is the pick and should embrace the chance to play with OJ Mayo
and Rudy Gay.

Memphis' brass has been over in Spain interviewing this kid and Marc
Gasol, fellow Spaniard, has talked to him as well and it seems as if
Rubio is coming around to the idea of being in Memphis.

3. Oklahoma City Thunder - Hasheem Thabeet, C, Connecticut

The Thunder have many holes and are not in a position to draft by,
well, position. Other than Westbrook, Durant and Jeff Green have
solidified their spots on this team. Nenad Krstic was a nice pickup
last year, but he's not a center you would want to build around.
Thabeet would give them an instant upgrade in the defense department
and if his offense ever comes around, he could become a really nice
player. He must bulk up, but who in the draft doesn't? Also considered
James Harden and DeMar DeRozan at this spot.

4. Sacramento Kings - Brandon Jennings, G, Italy

The Kings have drafted big men in the last two drafts with Spencer
Hawes and Jason Thompson. Both of them look as if they will grow into
good players in the league. Add to those two Kevin martin and Andres
Nocioni, the lack of a playmaking point guard really holds this team
back. Beno Udrih was given a horrible contract
and the Kings will be eating that while Jennings runs the show. Though
Jennings isn't a pure point guard, his scoring ability will be greatly
welcomed by the Kings.

5. Washington Wizards - Jordan Hill, F, Arizona

The Wizards are actually trying to shop the pick, but if they keep
it, I think Hill will be a great pick at #5. I think that Hill will be
the 3rd best prospect in the draft behind Blake Griffin and DeMar
DeRozan. Hill has developed his game to a higher level after every
season at Arizona and should only keep getting better. If he can add
more weight and some refined post moves, he'll be a very productive
player in this league.

Read the rest of the article here!

Dwight Drives Magic Past Cavs Into Finals

Free Agent Frenzy - Who Do We Want?

After a
disappointing end to the 2008-2009 season, it didn't take long for
Celtics' fans to scour the free agent list for this off-season's newest
additions. Our key needs are a backup center (because you can never
have too many), a backup small forward (to relieve Paul Pierce's tired
legs) and a veteran point guard to run the second unit. For a list of
the free agents this off-season, check out this site.

There is a short "Most Wanted List" started by the great community over at CelticsBlog.
These are the free agents that the fans want most to dawn the Celtics
green. If these players want to play in Boston, they would be the
selection over any other free agents available (in our opinion). The
list consists of five players: Grant Hill, Marcin Gortat, Chris
Anderson, Antonio McDyess, Rasheed Wallace. Hill would be a good small
forward off the bench, while the other four are clearly the big men we
could use, especially if Glen Davis and Leon Powe aren't re-signed.
Let's take a look at some free agents, not on the Most Wanted List, by
position, starting with the big men.

Zaza Pachulia - A 6′11″ center from Georgia (the
country) who played his last four seasons in Atlanta. Whenever the
Celtics played against the Hawks, I hated Zaza, but definitely can
appreciate what he would bring to our bench. He's got ideal size and a
pretty good rebounder, making the transition from Perkins to our backup
center that much less painful. He has backed up Al Horford for the past
two seasons, and could be looking for a starting gig. If not, we could
try to lure him here. Only thing that could stop that is his price tag.

Hakim Warrick - At 6′9″, Warrick would not be an
effective backup center, but could easily fill in the role of Leon Powe
off the bench. He brings great energy and attacks the rim just as hard.
Being a restricted free agent, Memphis could match any offer towards
Warrick, meaning Boston may have to overpay to get him. That's not
something we are capable of doing, so this could be a long-shot.

Joe Smith - Before Mikki Moore, Smith was the
target Danny Ainge had his eyes on first. After his trade to New
Orleans was rescinded, there was talk that he wouldn't be bought out of
his contract. When Moore was bought out, Ainge couldn't wait around
hoping Smith would be available, so he jumped at bringing him in.
Unfortunately, it didn't work out as well as we would have liked. Joe
Smith doesn't have the athleticism as Moore, but is a much better
defender and has a more consistent jumpshot that he's willing to take.
He's got good hands when cutting through the lane and can still flush
it from time to time.

There are some viable, backup small forwards among the litter, so if
Grant Hill were not to come to Boston, I would be happy/satisfied with
any of the following:

Matt Barnes - Barnes is a good, tenacious defender
and is a capable scorer on the wing. He can shoot the three, slash to
the bucket and even post up when he's feeling like being a bully. His
energy is something that can be contagious, ala Eddie House and Leon
Powe. Picking up Barnes would definitely help reduce the minutes Pierce
plays in the regular season.

Josh Childress - Everyone knows that Childress went
to Greece last season, but is looking at a return to the NBA. If he
does return, Atlanta still has the rights to match any offer he
receives. Add to that the fact that Marvin Williams is a free agent, I
believe the Hawks would only match one of the two. Personally, I think
ATL lets Childress go (with a fight, of course) and keeps the younger
Williams. Childress would be a player I would give the full MLE to over
three years, but I'm sure his agent will push for at least four,
probably five years. Childress would be a perfect 6th man and leader of
the 2nd unit.

Von Wafer - More of a shooting guard than a small
forward, but still could add depth and reduce minutes for Ray and Paul.
Wafer is a straight scorer, plain and simple. He's not going to do much
else, but if he could improve his defense a bit, he'd be a nice
addition to the bench. Wafer would be more of a last resort if we
couldn't get anyone better.

Backup point guard has been a position of importance for the past
two seasons. Sam Cassell played well for us two seasons ago down the
stretch while Stephon Marbury struggled for us this year. Who is a
possibility for us this time around?

Anthony Carter - Coming off the bench behind
Chauncey Billups in Denver, Carter brings great defense and a viable
shooter to the bench. He reminds me a bit of Lindsey Hunter, and that's
never really a bad thing. Personally, I see him staying in Denver, but
nonetheless, still worth a look.

Ramon Sessions - Played great for the Bucks as a
2nd round pick the last two seasons. He doesn't have any resemblance of
a three-point shot, but is a crafty scorer and a willing passer. He'd
be an ideal backup point guard for a championship team. Whether or not
he would allow himself to come off the bench is another question. I
really couldn't tell you how much he could command as a free agent, but
I think I would give him $7.5 million over three years and be very
happy about it.

Stephon Marbury - You had to know this was coming. Marbury showed flashes that he can still score and distribute the ball, but he was WAY
too hesitant to pull out the inner Starbury inside. In fact, you could
even say he was too much of a team player for his own good. I think an
entire off-season with the Celtics and he could find his niche with the
team. But if a team offers him a starting spot anywhere in the league,
better believe he's packing his bags.

Jarrett Jack - Viable bench point guard and,
although restricted, could be had at a low price, in my opinion. The
Pacers already have TJ Ford and, according to my mock draft,
will be drafting a point guard in the first round. Perhaps we get lucky
and Indiana doesn't match an offer for JJ, giving us a little help at
the point position.

So there's a quick list of 15 free agents that I think the Celtics
should pursue in one way or another. If we could grab two off of the
Most Wanted List, I think Celtic Nation (is that copywrited yet?) would
be ecstatic. If we weren't able to snag any of those top-5 targets, I
think we could still salvage the off-season with the 2nd tier options.
Pairing them up with the best starting unit in the league and a couple
decent bench veterans would prepare us for another run at a title.

Original Publication Source

Roster Review: JR Giddens | Bill Walker
