2009 Offseason Whirlwind

Man, this week had been filled with some HUGE trades. Let's talk about 'em.

For my thoughts on Richard Jefferson going to San Antonio, check out this entry.

SHAQUILLE O'NEAL TO CLEVELAND and SASHA PAVLOVIC AND BEN WALLACE TO PHOENIX
Okay, so this may possibly be the biggest trade of the offseason... and the people are making me dislike Cleveland all over again because they're pencilling in L.A. and Cleveland for the 2010 NBA Finals. Sure, O'Neal makes them tougher inside but he's not the entire solution. First off, we wonder if they can co-exist. Second, let's see how they mesh. LeBron loves to drive in and there's going to be a 7'1", 350-pound guy inside the paint at all times.

But what really needs fixing is that they need more than just isolation plays. And, in turn, better decision-making. This stuff falls on the coach. Part of what doomed Cleveland is that they took some terrible, terrible shots. LeBron's not the greatest three-point shooter in the world and, at times, he would just chuck one up without warning. His teammates would do the same thing. Basically, while they can score, they weren't an efficient scoring team against Orlando. And while Shaq adds power to the frontline, they still need a wing scorer/slasher that can create. Yeah, I didn't explain that very well when we did our inaugural 8th Seed podcast (check THAT PODCAST out, by the way... and I'm not afraid to admit that I actually sucked it real bad in that cast).

As for Phoenix? Steve Kerr said that they're "a team in transition". That's never good news to the fans. With Amare Stoudemire being thrown around in trade rumors (which I don't get because they can still win 50 games with this team), I just wonder if Phoenix has decided to start all over. What a waste. I would think Steve Nash would want out, too, for a better shot at a title.

For other viewpoints of this trade, check out this Chicks Who Love Hoops blog entry.

VINCE CARTER TO ORLANDO and COURTNEY LEE, TONY BATTIE, AND RAFER ALSTON TO NEW JERSEY
I don't think this trade is as bad as some people make it out to be because I think Orlando is a strong enough team. However, Carter does need to adjust to being the #2 or #3 guy. He certainly fills their need on the wing position but will his head be in it? Carter's also been known to disappear a bit in the postseason. But who knows? While he was pretty good last season, maybe this motivates him even more? A change of scenery? What kind of Vince Carter are we getting here?

As for the Nets' new pieces? Courtney Lee is pretty damn good and it sucks that he had to go. But he and Devin Harris will form a real good (HOT) backcourt. They might peddle Rafer Alston around because I'm sure he doesn't want to be an expensive back-up and Tony Battie is Tony Battie. New Jersey did accomplish freeing up MORE cap space after the shedding of Vinsanity's contract.

I think it works out better for Orlando if they can get Hedo Turkoglu back. Turkoglu was the jack-of-all-trades for Orlando (rebounding, passing, ball-handling, clutch shooting). If he leaves, I think Orlando will really miss him.

JAMAL CRAWFORD TO ATLANTA and SPEEDY CLAXTON AND ACIE LAW IV TO GOLDEN STATE
Well, Crawford was just on his way out of G. State. Don Nelson and Crawford clash a lot. So Jamal had to go. But to get those bit pieces from Atlanta? I thought they could've done better. Where is Golden State going?

Now this represents a little conundrum for Atlanta. They sure as hell got more talented but where will Crawford fit in the equation? Is he willing to come off the bench as a potent sixth man (a la Jason Terry and Manu Ginobili)?

MIKE MILLER AND RANDY FOYE TO WASHINGTON and ETAN THOMAS, DARIUS SONGAILA, OLEXSIY PECHEROV, AND THE 5TH PICK (RICKY RUBIO) TO MINNESOTA
Washington's a talented team that was just decimated with injuries last year. I believe they're a playoff team when healthy (ESPECIALLY Gilbert Arenas). Anyway, they fill their need in outside shooting with Mike Miller. I think Randy Foye's numbers were a bit inflated in Minnesota but he'll be a serviceable back-up guard (maybe even start if Arenas STILL isn't healthy). They are getting a bit crowded in the backcourt, though...

Minnesota just really cleaned house and was lucky to have Ricky Rubio drop to their laps for the 5th pick. But I'm trying to figure out their stance after they drafted Jonny Flynn right after Rubio. Their new players will help in the frontcourt but it's not like they'll set anything on fire.

By the way, the New York Knicks' draft pick, Jordan Hill? She sounds hot.

Draft Leaves Questions, Not Answers

Miami Heat President Pat Riley spent most of the Draft merely looking at the trade bonanza that ensued after the Los Angeles Clippers took Blake Griffin with the No. 1 pick. Apparently, Riley was not kidding when he said that there were going to be no major moves until he knows what direction Dwyane Wade wants to take with regard to his contract.

Miami selected Marcus Thornton with the No. 43 pick, but traded him to New Orleans for a 2010 second-round pick and a 2012 second-round pick minutes later. The Heat front office has its eyes set on Patrick Beverley, though, a point guard who spent two seasons at Arkansas and last season in Ukraine. Beverley heard his name called at No. 42 to the Los Angeles Lakers. Riley quickly made his move, trading a 2011 second-round pick and cash considerations for the 6-foot-1 player.

So who is Beverley? The Chicago native seemed to have a bright future when he made a name for himself at Arkansas. He could hit the occasional three, defend well and rebound at a high rate for a point guard. Beverley was suspended for the 2008-09 season because of turning in a paper that wasn't his work, however. He decided to play professionally in Ukraine to develop his game as a point guard. Riley didn't seem to have any qualms about trading up one spot in the Draft to get the long-armed 175-pounder, though. He said that he was enamored with Beverley after his workouts in Miami.

With Mario Chalmers and Chris Quinn already under contract, it appears to be a little strange that the Heat would take yet another inexperienced point guard. It has been well-documented that Miami's biggest need is a veteran point guard. The Heat may send Beverley overseas for a season and acquire a starting-caliber guard through a trade. Another course of action may be to include Quinn's expiring contract in a package to acquire a veteran point guard. Then, Chalmers and Beverley can compete for minutes behind the starter. Quite frankly, I just don't see Chalmers, Beverley and Quinn as the answers for Miami's point guard problems.

To finish up the Draft, the Heat picked Robert Dozier out of Memphis with No. 60. Dozier is an athletic, long combo forward who has drawn comparisons to Tyrus Thomas. He also has a nice jump-shot, as Dozier occasionally even stepped out to the college three-point line. Riley said that he expects to develop Dozier as an athletic three as opposed to the four, where he spent most of his time at in Memphis.

Hmm, it sounds that Riley is trying to do to Dozier what he couldn't do for Dorell Wright. It seems as if Wright's days in Miami could be numbered with the Heat bringing in an athletic player who Riley envisions to be on the wing. Miami already has a logjam of small forwards with James Jones, Yakhouba Diawara, Wright and Jamario Moon, a restricted free agent. Why bring in another three if a trade isn't going to be made?

Miami's two biggest areas of need are the starting point guard and starting small forward spots. The Heat picked up a point guard and a small forward, but not one that has the pedigree of a starter. Don't expect anything to be done until Wade responds to Riley's sales pitch for signing a contract extension, though. In the end, this Draft provided more questions than answers for the Heat.

Is East Shooting Ahead of Heat?

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Orlando Magic both made blockbuster trades Thursday, acquiring Shaquille O'Neal and Vince Carter, respectively. It is important not to overstate what these teams did because they were already better than Miami. What matters is what the second-tier East teams did, such as Atlanta, Philadelphia, Chicago and Detroit.

Atlanta already improved with the trade for Jamal Crawford, but added depth to the point guard spot with the selection of point guard Jeff Teague at No. 19. It's doubtful that the Hawks will bring back Mike Bibby, but Crawford and Teague are solid acquisitions for Atlanta.

Philadelphia -- a team Miami fought with for the No. 5 seed down the stretch of the regular season -- picked Jrue Holiday, a point guard with a lot of upside. Holiday didn't have a good statistical freshman season at UCLA, but may be a replacement for free agent Andre Miller in Philly down the road.

Chicago picked James Johnson, who some view as an athletic small forward with a lot of potential, but not the best decision-making. The Bulls still have to sort out what to do with its small forward depth chart. Will Luol Deng stay or has John Salmons earned the spot?

Detroit selected Austin Daye with the No. 15 pick, a skinny, 6-foot-11 forward from Gonzaga. Daye will probably back up Tayshaun Prince in his rookie year, but the Pistons have a lot of cap space. They may look to go after Carlos Boozer and Hedo Turkoglu, which would not be good for the Heat.

-->

The New Jersey Nets have agreed to a trade in principle with the Magic that will send Vince Carter and Ryan Anderson to Orlando for Rafer Alston, Tony Battie and Courtney Lee, two league sources told ESPN.com.

The two sides are expected to a complete the trade by the end of the day.

The trade would give the Magic even more star power on their quest to
win an NBA championship. The addition of Carter to a lineup that
already consists of All-Star players Dwight Howard, Rashard Lewis and Jameer Nelson would make Orlando the favorite to win the Eastern Conference title next year if the franchise also finds a way to bring back Hedo Turkoglu, who will opt out of his contract this summer.

Don't kid yourself. If you're a Cavs fan, this move is scary, especially if Turkoglu comes back. You're rolling out a starting five of Dwight Howard, Rashard Lewis, Hedo Turkoglu, Vince Carter, and Jameer Nelson. If you think last month provided some mismatch problems for the Cavs, then you haven't even heard of the definition for "mismatch problems" yet.

Four of those guys are All-Stars, and the one guy who wasn't -- Hedo -- sure as hell plays like one.

The Cavs have done a lot in addressing Howard by acquiring Shaq. But how do they match up with the 6'10" Lewis and Turkoglu and the 6'6" Carter? They had enough problems doing so in the Eastern Conference Finals. Acquiring help on the perimeter is absolutely critical as the Cavs and Magic continue their high-stakes poker game for Eastern Conference supremacy, one that will culminate next spring.

Some names to throw out there:

Shawn Marion, 6'7" SF (Age 31, unrestricted free agent, Toronto)
Rasheed Wallace, 6'11" PF (Age 35, unrestricted free agent, Detroit)
Ron Artest, 6'7" SF (Age 30, unrestricted free agent, Houston)
Charlie Villanueva, 6'11" PF (Age 25, restricted free agent, Milwaukee)
Lamar Odom, 6'10" PF/SF (Age 30, unrestricted free agent, Los Angeles Lakers)
Trevor Ariza, 6'8" SF (Age 24, unrestricted free agent, Los Angeles Lakers)
Marvin Williams, 6'9" SF (Age 23, restricted free agent, Atlanta)

Some Cavalier insiders have even mentioned the possibility of the team making an aggressive pursuit of Josh Childress, the 6'8" Atlanta Hawks swingman who decided to play in Greece this past season.

*Remember, the Cavs DO NOT have salary cap space and can only offer any one of these guys the midlevel exception of around $5.8 million to start for next season. That is probably less than the market value for any one of the players listed above, meaning the Cavs might have to get creative with sign-and-trades and draft picks.

The only thing we know for sure at this point is that the Magic are just as serious about winning this whole thing next June as the Cavs are. But with D-Howard secured long term, the stakes in Cleveland are a lot higher.

Make sure to check it out!

Shaq heading to Cleveland.

Insight: Well, looks like Danny Ferry took notice of the work pile he had waiting for him. This deal took a big load off of the Cavs' executive. It looks to me like the Cavs won't try to do much more this offseason but draft another J.J. Hickson-type guy with the 30th pick they hold. The team will be preparing and/or meshing all offseason. Expect them to be reared and ready to go by the beginning of the '09-10 season.

Congrats LeBron. You've got yourself a second chance. Do something with it.

SI: Rondo could possibly be involved in package deal.

Yao out indefinitely with foot injury.

Insight: Could the Rockets pull off a deal today?

Suns active, rumors of Amar'e going to Warriors.

Nets, Magic, agree to deal, send Carter to Orlando.

Insight: Here's that link. Few quick thoughts...

This could either make or break the Magic's chances next year. Carter has always been a reliable scorer and a clutch player, which may prompt them to let Hedo leave. The main reason they were trying to re-sign him was because of the major role he played on the team. With Carter there, they won't need to restrain him from joining another team. But, Carter also has been known for his disruptive behavior in the locker room at times (more on the third bullet). Screwing up chemistry is dangerous for any team, especially the Magic.

The Magic are likely done this offseason. They may try to shape their team out this Summer by signing a few minor free agents. Obviously, if they don't grab an SG in the free agent market, Mickael Pietrus will assume the starting shooting guard role, allowing Carter to become the team's small forward (that is if the Magic don't bring back Turkoglu).

Van Gundy will have his hands full next year. Although Alston is gone, he still has some big egos with Howard, Carter, Rashard Lewis. The Magic have an interesting mix of players, and it will be costly for SVG to even think about letting his guard down.

Lakers send 29th pick the New York Knicks for cash.

Rumors have the Suns asking for Chandler in exchange for Ben Wallace.

Pacers Pulse (via Indy Cornrows): Pacers close to trading for Bulls two first rounders, surrender 13th pick.

Rondo's agent responds to Ainge's criticism.

Ray believes he'll stay.

Ray WANTS to stay.

CelticsBlog: Analysis of Draft day.

Expect Rondo to be involved or mentioned in Draft day trades.

Bob Ryan: The curious case of Rajon Rondo.

Blazers deal three picks to Dallas for pick number 22.

Crawford to Atlanta.

<strike> </strike>

Draft Day is here, and I thought you guys might want something else to do besides refresh ESPN and Yahoo! every five seconds.
Can Heat Compete in East?

The 2009 NBA Draft is only one day away, but I'm not talking about the Draft. The Miami Heat's lack of a first-round pick and the Draft's weakness contribute to that; however, division rivals Washington Wizards and Atlanta Hawks have completed lopsided trades that could potentially put them ahead of the Heat.

Washington traded away its No. 5 selection in the Draft, Etan Thomas, Darius Songalia and Oleksiy Pecherov for Randy Foye and Mike Miller. This instantly makes the Wizards a playoff-contending team when healthy. Foye, Gilbert Arenas, Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison can all put up points in a hurry. Miller and DeShawn Stevenson can come off the bench and stretch the defense with their shooting. Moreover, Washington still has Brendan Haywood and JaVale McGee, who are both 7-feet tall.

The Wizards still have to become a better defensive team -- and the addition of Flip Saunders as the team's head coach doesn't help -- but Washington can be a playoff team that challenges the likes of Chicago, Philadelphia, Miami and Atlanta.

The trade that could affect the Heat more is the one that ESPN is reporting today, though. The apparently imminent deal would send Acie Law and Speedy Claxton to the Warriors in exchange for Jamal Crawford. The newest member of the Hawks has been especially keen at picking apart the Heat's defense. His career-high 52-point game Jan. 26, 2007 against Miami officially cemented his status as a Heat killer.

This deal does add questions to where free agent Mike Bibby will call home in October. The 6-foot-5 Crawford is not a true point guard, but could play alongside Joe Johnson in the backcourt for Atlanta. My guess is the the Hawks have Crawford and Johnson in the backcourt and wave goodbye to Bibby. No matter what Atlanta decides to do with Bibby, Crawford still gives the Hawks yet another offensive weapon.

Just to make things clear, the Heat had no viable shot at either of these trades -- or the Richard Jefferson trade that sent the dynamic forward to San Antonio. Jefferson and Crawford have contracts that go beyond 2010; and while Foye and Miller both have expiring contracts, the Minnesota Timberwolves were looking for a first-round pick, something the Heat doesn't have.

One has to wonder how this shakes up the Eastern Conference. Orlando, Cleveland and Boston are still leaps and bounds ahead of any other team in the East. Beyond Atlanta and Washington, Miami will have to fight Philadelphia and Chicago in the four-to-eight range. The Heat could conceivably go into the playoffs with the fifth seed, but putting Miami ahead of Atlanta right now would seem to be a bit of a stretch.

Heat President Pat Riley has made it clear that his team's off-season will be quiet until he gets a definitive read on Dwyane Wade. The negotiations for a contract extension can start July 12, so Miami will likely have to be spectators as far as trades go until then. Wade has made it clear that he wants to fast-track the rebuilding process. Unless Riley comes to Wade with an agreement with another General Manager on the table, it is highly unlikely for Wade to sign that extension.

After Washington and Atlanta clearly upgraded, Riley must know that this team cannot make a lateral move. Riley needs to make some moves that will upgrade his team and vault them ahead of Atlanta, Washington, Chicago and Philadelphia in the East. This team is not going to be better than No. 5 in the East if Riley does nothing. Wade wants to be on a championship-contending team, not a playoff-contending team. If he wants to keep Wade, Riley's going to need to be very busy.

NBA trade buzz continues to build

The Atlanta Hawks and Golden State Warriors are closing in on a deal that would send Jamal Crawford to the Hawks for Acie Law and Speedy Claxton.

Nam's take: This is an interesting trade for the Hawks. It will definitely have an impact on what type of contract offer they give to Mike Bibby. Crawford is not a true point guard but he is a prolific scorer. I would have preferred the Hawks re-sign Bibby and try and find a legit center because a frontcourt of Zaza Pachulia and Al Horford won't cut it.

Stu's take: Crawford is a good player, and will certainly be an offensive spark plug for Atlanta. However, Crawford does not have a history of being a winner and has shown that he needs to be a volume shooter to be a successful contributor to a team. A talent upgrade for Atlanta? Absolutely? Does it bump them up a tier within the East? I don't think so.

The Portland Trail Blazers acquire the 22nd pick in Thursday's NBA Draft from the Dallas Mavericks for the 24th and 56th picks in this year's draft, and a 2010 second round pick.

Nam's take: Word around the league is that the Sacramento Kings are interested in Omri Casspi from Israel with the 23rd pick. Casspi is a lanky 6'9'' post that plays all out and can step back and shoot the three-ball. Casspi would be a good pick for the Blazers, who can provide some toughness in the front court. Other possible selections for the Blazers could be Florida's Nick Calathes, Pittsburgh's DeJuan Blair, Georgetown's DeJuan Summers, or VCU's Eric Maynor.

Stu's take: Who knows what the Blazers are up to. I've heard Ty Lawson rumblings recently, but they seem a bit unfounded given the recent Kirk Hinrich rumblings as well. Something's got to give. While this trade might indicate that they have their sights set on a specific player (possibly Casspi), it also could be used as a more valuable chip in a larger trade. I expect Kevin Pritchard to be up to his old tricks again this year, and we can definitely expect more draft activity from Portland.

There are strong indications that the Pistons will be very active this offseason. They are planning to pursue Ben Gordon aggressively. They also wish to sign Carlos Boozer but will walk away if he demands $14 or $15 million.

Nam's take: Boozer would be smart to just exercise his $12.6 million option and wait for 2010's free agency market. I don't believe Ben Gordon will be the answer for the Pistons to move back into the Eastern Conference's elite teams. They have a decent core with Rodney Stuckey, Richard Hamilton, and Tayshaun Prince. In order to battle with the Dwight Howard's and Kevin Garnett's they will need some young, athletic big men to support the aging Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess.

Stu's take: The addition of Gordon would be redundant with their current core in place (Stuckey, Hamiltion), although Detroit's interest may mean there is some truth behind their shopping of Hamilton. Gordon did show his grit and determination throughout that epic first round battle against Boston, and he definitely has higher value than he did last year. Boozer would be a nice addition to any team for the right price, and he would be a nice addition to the Pistons - especially if 'Sheed isn't playing with his threats of early retirement. I agree with Nam though, in this shaky economy, Boozer might be better off staying put until the market rebounds.

Chicago has been very willing to part with Tyrus Thomas however; Kirk Hinrich's name continues to come up on the Blazers wish list given their growing pessimism with Phoenix unlikely to trade Steve Nash or attempting to sign Jason Kidd away from Dallas.

Nam's take: The Blazers are obviously trying to find a point guard that can take them to next level; someone they can pair with superstar Brandon Roy in the backcourt. If they do find another PG they will have to get rid one of their current PGs, so there won't be any controversy in shared playing time.

Stu's take: The point guard situation in Portland is such an enigma, but it's looking like there will be changes in the backcourt whether it is through trading for a vet or building through the draft. Sergio Rodriguez is as good as gone after expressing his desire to be elsewhere next season. Steve Blake was highly criticized after an unproductive series against the Rockets this year. And Jerryd Bayless is somewhat of an unproven commodity, although people in Portland love his intensity, toughness and ability to get to the rack. But, we all know, you have to give something up to get something back. One or two of these guys might be packing their bags this offseason.

Needs and Assets: Southeast Division

Our continuing look at the needs of ever club and any potential assets that can be utilized to obtain those needs. Today we'll be looking at the Southeast:

Orlando Magic
Draft Pick(s): None
Free Agents: Hedo Turkoglu, Marcin Gortat, Tyronn Lue, Adonal Foyle & Jeremy Richardson
Team Needs: Back-up C & size in their frontcourt
Assets: Expiring contracts heading into next offseason including Rafer Alston who should be moved before the season starts.

It was no surprise that Hedo Turkoglu chose to not pick up his player option this offseason and test the free agent waters. Turkoglu's production this season dropped noticably compared to last season's Most Improved Player bid, but he was a clutch performer in the postseason. At 30, this also might be his last opportunity to cash in as a free agent.

The Magic have claimed they'll do whatever it takes to bring Hedo back and not break up their core, but that could have repercussions that could hurt the club. Whatever the Magic end up paying Turkoglu could push them well beyond the luxury tax. This isn't the type of franchise that can throw money around like the Celtics or Knicks, so we'll see if they'll put their money where their mouth is.

The other concern raised by re-signing Hedo is the future of Marcin Gortat. Orlando may not have the ability to pay Hedo whatever he wants and match any offer for Gortat who became a hot commodity after filling in at center whenever Dwight Howard was in foul trouble. He doesn't have eye-popping numbers, but his production in limited minutes could be very enticing for a number of teams.

The other goal for Orlando this offseason will be moving Rafer Alston. Alston was a stopgap to run the team until Jameer Nelson came back from injury. He also did a phenomenal job leading the team during the first two rounds of the playoffs and was playing with confidence and swagger. The Magic's run to the finals was improbable and created a problem at the point. The deep run allowed Nelson to recover from his injuries and start to play against the Lakers, but his increase in minutes shook Alston's confidence and created conflict. Now the Magic will have to find a taker for Alston, and it shouldn't be an issue considering his expiring contract.

The Magic have no picks in Thursday's draft, but they can still be active in the trade market. Any team looking for a point guard could trade for Alston as a one-year solution. This would allow a team to draft more of a project at point and gives them a year to develop the pick.

Atlanta Hawks
Draft Pick(s): 19th & 39th
Free Agents: Mike Bibby, Marvin Williams, Zaza Pachulia, Ronald Murray, Solomon Jones, Thomas Gardner & Mario West
Team Needs: PG, C, SF and back-up everything
Assets: If they're trying to win now, Speedy Claxton and Mo Evans have movable contracts. They'd also like to move Josh Smith, but his long-term deal will make that difficult. If they don't care about this season, Joe Johnson's expiring $15 million contract.

The Hawks are at a crossroads this offseason. They have made the playoffs the past two seasons but have been bounced in the first round both years. They have a number of key guys hitting the free agent market and could either decide to look to the future or right now. The biggest name in their free agent crop being Mike Bibby.

Bibby was the catalyst that got Atlanta back into the playoffs in 2008 after a 10 year drought. He was the veteran leader that the Hawks needed and a proven playoff performer (I love alliteration) that could show the younger players the ropes. If Atlanta brings Bibby back, it should be for no more than three years and shouldn't break their bank, but we'll see if Bibby is willing to accept that after being overpaid for the last four seasons.

The other concern will be re-signing Marvin Williams. We all know that the Hawks should have taken Chris Paul or Deron Williams over Williams in the 2005 draft, but that was hardly his fault. He has been judged negatively as a result ever since. Despite that Williams has been a very solid NBA player since coming into the league. He is a restricted free agent this offseason, and there should be some interest from other teams. The only factor that could help the Hawks save on his contract is the availability of bigger name forwards.

That will leave the Hawks with a decision of whether to re-sign Zaza Pachulia or Ronald Murray. They may be able to sign both and make this point moot.

There will be a lot of questions as to what the Hawks should do heading into the draft. There is no guarantee that Atlanta will be able to re-sign all of their free agents, so they certainly will be looking to fill any potential openings via the draft. They'll have a number of options at 19 with Jeff Teague, Eric Maynor and Darren Collison available at point guard and Chase Budinger and Sam Young available at the wing positions. Atlanta also is very high on Tyler Hansbrough, but that just might be conjecture to force another team to move up for him.

Miami Heat
Draft Pick(s): 43rd & 60th
Free Agents: Smush Parker, Jamario Moon, Jamal Magloire, Joel Anthony & Luther Head
Team Needs: C, SF & back-up PG
Assets: More expiring deals than you can shake a stick at.

The Heat have put themselves into a perfect positions for next summer. They'll only have about $13 million committed when they pick up the options on Michael Beasley, Mario Chalmers, Daequan Cook and James Jones. Miami can then back the Brinks truck up to Dwyane Wade's front door when he inevitably opts out to cash in. Even with his max deal next season, let's assume the salary cap will be set at $58 million, so the Heat will have an additional $20-25 million to spend on the rest of the free agent class next summer.

Unfortunately this translates to very unexciting summer of 2009 for Miami. The Heat may end up re-signing Jamario Moon to fill a need, but they don't have the cap space to do much more than that. We'll see if they even choose to use their Mid-Level Exception this summer since it may just end up being a waste.

Of course the Heat are prepared to pay Dwyane Wade whatever he wants no matter what their cap situation next summer, so Miami may decide to use Jermaine O'Neal's expiring $23 million contract or work out a package that includes Udonis Haslem. Just don't hold your breath.

The draft will give the Heat an opportunity to add more depth. Unfortunately they won't be making their first pick until after David Stern has stopped announcing the picks. At that point, the Heat will just be looking for the best player available no matter what position. They should look for a back-up point guard or anyone to play in the front court. Don't be surprised if they drafted a project to store overseas for a year or two.

Charlotte Bobcats
Draft Pick(s): 12th, 40th & 54th
Free Agents: Raymond Felton, Sean May, Juwan Howard & Sean Singletary
Team Needs: SG & PG
Assets: Raja Bell can be moved. Nazr Mohammed and Vlad Radmanovich have contracts that could be appealing.

The Bobcats are going to be a tough nut to crack this offseason. They have brought on a number of contracts that could scare off any trade partners. The have Boris Diaw, Gerald Wallace and Emeka Okafor signed for $9 million or more for at least the next 3 seasons (Okafor is signed through 2014).

Charlotte also haven't given themselves much cap flexibility this or next offseason. Raja Bell is their only expiring contract next summer unless Radmanovich opts out of his contract which isn't likely. That leaves them with very few moves they can realistically make this summer, and very few teams would consider making a trade to bring on more payroll with the number of free agents next season.

It looks like Charlotte is willing to let Sean May walk. They have chosen not to give him a qualifying offer making him an unrestricted free agent. That will allow may to test the free agent waters, but it also gives the Bobcats the ability to re-sign him at a smaller contract. They have however made a qualifying offer to Raymond Felton and should be able to re-sign him to a long term deal. This at least will address one need at point guard.

With Felton signed and Augustin still under his rookie contract, the Bobcats should look to draft a shooting guard at 12. Gerald Henderson will definitely be available and Terrence Williams might be there too. Either player would be a good fit for Charlotte. Williams isn't great offensively, but he is a very good defender. He also is a great rebounder for his size. Henderson is more polished on offense and a very smart player. His midrange game is about as good as anyone coming out in the draft. Williams will probably be the better player when it's all said and done, but Charlotte should take a long hard look at Henderson considering their 27th ranked offense last season.

Washington Wizards
Draft Pick(s): 5th & 32nd
Free Agents: Juan Dixon
Team Needs: SG & C
Assets: Washington has a plethora of expiring contracts for next summer, and there are quite a few teams that would take on Antawn Jamison's contract.

The Wizards will not be major players in this offseason's free agent market. They just don't have the cap space to make a splash. This may also be the case in next summer's bonanza. They have nearly $54 million already tied up ($41 million of which going to Gilbert Arenas, Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison), and that is before they pick up the options on Nick Young, Javaris Crittenton and JaVale McGee. If they pick up all their team options, they'll be looking at a $67-68 million payroll after signing their draft picks.

With that being said, Washington will not be changing the make-up of their team through free agency. It is more likely that they'll be looking to trade Jamison for expiring contracts or use Etan Thomas, Mike James or Brendan Haywood and their expiring contracts to bring in another big name player. No matter how you slice it, Arenas' contract has put the Wizards in a very uneviable position and leaves them about as flexible as a 75-year-old man.

The draft will be the best avenue for the Wizards to pick up a talented player. They have a need at shooting guard, so they are hoping that James Harden falls to them at 5. Harden is a very good scorer, a good off-ball defender and not DeShawn Stevenson, so basically he is a triple-threat. The Wizards would love to have him and make Stevenson expendable. If he doesn't fall to them at 5, Washington will be left with a choice of Jordan Hill, Stephen Curry or Tyreke Evans (if available). Hill would be drafted to give them the ability to trade Jamison whereas Curry and Evans would be able to play both guard positions and take the pressure off of Arenas to handle the ball.

The Top Five NBA Players To Never Win a Championship

There's one topic players throughout the league agree about. It's that winning a championship is the greatest feeling you could ever have. The ultimate accomplishment, the most significant achievement, and the most memorable moment of glory. Sadly, not all players, even greats, are able to win championships.

And those greats especially are deprived of something extraordinary. Deprived of hoisting that Larry O'Brien trophy high in the air so all can see. Deprived of raising the banner the subsequent season as proof that they were champions. Deprived of winning on the most important stage, and having the privilege to say that you were victorious in the Finals. In some cases, players are not elected into the Hall Of Fame simply because they weren't winners in the Association.

But which players are seen as "the best of the best (that did not win a ring)?" To answer that question, I've compiled a list of the top five players to never win a championship. Read on after the jump...

News Roundup: VC, Kaman, Yao and '09 Draft

Cavemen in Cleveland?!?! Impossible? No. Probable? Maybe.

The world has come a far way now breaking news on Twitter. We now have star players voicing their opinions on everything from Chad Ochocinco wanting to fight Mike Golic to Kevin Love telling the whole world Kevin McHale would not be back with the T'Wolves next year.

It was only a matter of time before something relevant to the Cavs was reported.

Last night Rich Bucher reported, via the awesomeness that Twitter has become (can't figure out if I believe that statement or not), that the Los Angeles Clippers thought they had a deal done for center Chris Kaman 48 hours ago. And the team that it was with was? If you guessed the Cavs, you're right.

*Trying like heck to move one of their bigs, Kaman or Camby. (Moving Zach just beyond possibility.) Cutting costs everywhere

*Clips were confident they had a Kaman deal 48 hrs ago. That changed last night. Camby to OKC is still out there right now.

*Don't have all the details [to Kaman deal]. Best I can tell, it was to Cle, similar to what they were offering for Shaq.

Pretty interesting I must say so myself.

From the looks of it, Ferry is exploring every possible way to improve this team. So far it looks like he's pretty much been offering Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic around to see what's the best deal, in his eyes. Most of the discussions that have been brought up in recent days have been rehashed talks from the deadline but this seems to be someone that Ferry just may be getting interested in (maybe he is and maybe he isn't but we haven't heard his name linked to the Cavs before).

Kaman is a interesting player. After being diagnosed with ADHD when he was 2 years old and being place on medicines such as Ritalin and Adderall, he has since been told (early 2008) he actually does not have ADHD and he was mis-diagnosed. Since then he has been treated for his so called "learning problem" and has seen improvements both on and off the court.

Kaman is a 27 year old center that has progressed season-by-season in becoming a better player. He entered the league as a goofy looking kid from Central Michigan and has since developed a decent all-around game.

Offensively, he's a decent scorer who can score in a multitude of ways. He's got a decent low-post game, is athletic enough to take guys off the dribble and has a good mid-range game that he's developed. He put up 14.6 points per 36 minutes last year, had a USG% of 20.9 and had a TS% of 55.2. (Just for comparison, here's Z's numbers: 17.1 pts/36mins, 23.8 USG%, 52.3 TS%) All decent numbers for a center who only played in 36 games last year but all those numbers were still close to career highs for him, which is kind of scary (in a bad way).

Defensively, he's never been a terrific defender but he isn't a slouch either. Coming in at around 270lbs., he's got surprising athleticism that helps him to be a pretty good rebounder and shot-blocker.

So what's the problem? Well for one he's due $33.9 million over the next 3 years. While he is a solid center and isn't too old, he isn't worth that type of money. And with GMs worried about 2010 cap space, taking on a contract like Kaman's isn't exactly something most GMs would want to do.

The second problem is that he's only played in 77 games the past two seasons. While he's stayed relatively healthy previous to those two years in the NBA and college, some worry about whether or not this is him beginning to break down or whether this just may be a little kink in the system.

Vinsanity Talks Resume

Ferry's been quite active in trying to rehash old talks from the trade deadline and from previous years and this time it's with a guy we all know too well: Vince Carter.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reported that the Cavs and Nets have resumed talks about Carter.

The Nets and Cleveland Cavaliers have discussed Vince Carter(notes)
again, sources said. As financial losses mount for New Jersey's
ownership, it appears more likely that the Nets will try to move Carter
and the two years and $33.6 million left on his deal. The Nets would
have to take Ben Wallace(notes) and Sasha Pavlovic(notes) in return.

But then the New York Post reported something different. (keep in mind it's Peter Vecsey)

With that in mind, contrary to a Yahoo! report, the Nets have had
no conversation with the Cavaliers since mid-February regarding Vince Carter for anybody, much less Sasha Pavlovic and Ben Wallace, who talked about retiring but is not about to forfeit $14M.

  Zero!

Would Ratner love to be save $33M, which is what Carter is owed
over the next two seasons? No doubt. But only if the Nets got to keep
his 20-point average, sprinkled with plenty of 30s and a few 40s. Or
could get a cheaper clone who, don't forget, also must donate five
assists and five rebounds per outing.

Aren't many of those featured creatures roaming around the NBA
tundra . . . at least who can be had. Carter probably can be had --
that's why the Cavs, Spurs and Blazers all thought seriously or talked
deliriously about getting him just prior to last February's trade
deadline -- but not for rotten bananas.

Want Carter? Gotta give to get! And at this moment, the Nets are engaged in no substantive trade talks.

  Zero!

While Carter is still talented and still has game, it doesn't seem too
smart to spend your best trading chips on someone who doesn't fill any
of your biggest needs at this moment. Would he be a nice piece?
Definitely. But not right now with our needs, our assets and with the
money he's still owed.

It looks like Ferry is doing his due diligence in checking out every player he's ever been interested in.

It'll be interesting to see what the Wallace-Pavlovic deal eventually brings in.

Cavs Keying On 3 Guys To Trade Up For?

While the Cavs are probably interested in more than 3 players in trading up for, it was interesting to hear who Brian Windhorst mentioned in the Plain Dealer on Sunday

The chatter in the league is that the Cavs are very interested in
moving up in the draft. They have been talking to teams just outside of
the lottery (starting with the 15th pick) down into the low 20s.

As they look to move up, the Cavs might be targeting three players who most certainly will not be there at 30.

One is Ty Lawson, the dynamic and speedy point guard from
North Carolina. Though he's small and that doesn't exactly fit what the
Cavs need with undersized guards Mo Williams and Delonte West, Lawson
has proven to be a winner and an excellent decision maker for the
national champs. He's been overlooked by some teams and the Cavs love
to find undervalued players in the draft. They feel Daniel Gibson and
Darnell Jackson fit that same mold.

Another is Sam Young, an experienced wingman who proved to
be a strong defender at Pittsburgh while playing in a power conference
(Big East). Ferry is very close to the Pitt program and has been
keeping an eye on Young for the past several years. Young fits the
Cavs' need for size on the perimeter.

The last is Earl Clark, a tall power forward from
Louisville who can play a little inside and out. The Cavs spent an
extended period interviewing him at the Chicago Draft Combine. At 6-10
from a power program, he also fits a need.

Because the Cavs have shown a willingness to spend money and some teams
are operating deep in the red, there has been a belief that the Cavs
will look to purchase a first-round pick. Teams are allowed to spend up
to $3 million to get them and, as a result, that is almost always the
price. But do not assume the Cavs will definitely pull the trigger.
They might be able to find better uses for the money. If they are going
to buy a pick, the second round is more likely. The Cavs might be able
to find a sleeper in there, especially between their picks of 30 and
46. Last season the Cavs spent $300,000 to buy the rights to Sasha Kahn
out of the second round and that might be the type of check they prefer
to write to get another player in this draft.

All interesting players in their own right, the best news is that Ferry and Co. is looking very hard to trade up in the draft. The thing that they need to be most careful though is that the draft is historically not very productive outside the top-10 and the talent is pretty much the same from 11-22. In a weak draft like this, especially, the Cavs also need to be careful in who they're choosing to trade up for.

As far as teams that may be willing to move down and/or out of the draft, there's been a lot of rumors out there.

Detroit has been rumored to be offering #15 and Amir Johnson for cap space. Atlanta has been said they're offering #19 and Speedy Claxton for cap space. The Phoenix Suns, #14, are always seem willing to move their picks for money. The cash-strapped Charlotte Bobcats at #12 may be forced to sell their pick with ownership problems. The Nets have been said to be very active in trade talks involving their pick. The Hornets seem willing to sell their pick with tough economic times giving their franchise a hard time. The T'Wolves have 3 picks in the 1st round and seem willing to trade away one or maybe two of their picks. The list goes on and on.

The good news is that a lot of teams 12-22 seem willing to sell/trade their pick(s) if need be. The other good news is that there are very little buyers (basically the Cavs, Blazers, Celtics, Spurs and Rockets) and a lot of sellers.

Let's hope Ferry has that San Antonio draft eye (hasn't really proven whether or not he has it yet) and can snag a player that will develop into a nice core piece down the road.

Additional Players In For A Workout

In an update to my original post on who the Cavs had in for a draft workout, it's been listed on HoopsReport.com that the Cavs have had more players in for a workout. Here's the additional names that weren't mentioned previously.

Eric Maynor (VCU, PG)
Jimmy Baron (Rhode Island, G)
Chase Budinger (Arizona, G/F)
Paul Harris (Syracuse, G/F)
Patrick Beverely (Ukraine, G)
Wayne Ellington (North Carolina, G)
DaJuan Summers (Georgetown, F)
Lester Hudson (UT-Martin, G)
Austin Daye (Gonzaga, F)
Lee Cummard (BYU, G)
Wesley Matthews (Marquette, G/F)
Danny Green (North Carolina, G/F)
Jeff Teague (Wake Forest, G)
Nick Calathes (Florida, G)
Taj Gibson (USC, PF)
Ahmad Nivins (St. Joseph's, F/C)
Ryan Toolson (Utah Valley State, G)
Luke Nevill (Utah, C)
Josh Shipp (UCLA, G)
Jeremy Pargo (Gonzaga, G)
Dionte Christmas (Temple, G)
Taylor Griffin (Oklahoma, F)
Paul Delaney (UAB, G)
Dar Tucker (DePaul, G)
AJ Price (UCONN, G)
Stefon Jackson (UTEP, G/F)

Yao + 2010 Free Agency + Chinese Investors = Cavs?

It's doubtful anyone bought into Yao Ming coming to Cleveland in 2010 with Chinese investors buying ownership in the team, but Yao squashed any chance of that rumor being true on Friday.

Rockets center Yao Ming has called a possible move to Cleveland an
"unknown" amid rumors that the Cavaliers' new Chinese part owners want
to sign him.

In a recent interview with his hometown Shanghai TV station, Yao
said he continued to have "much affection" for the Houston Rockets, the

he has played all six of his NBA seasons.

While it could conceivably happen in 2010, don't get any hopes up.

And finally: 3 more rumor filled days until June 25th comes and all of this madness ends, but just for a short time until Free Agency starts up July 1st.

But until then.....Adios Amigos!

Two Areas The Spurs Need To Address Via Free Agency

The NBA Draft is next week and though the Spurs do not have a First-Round pick, they do have 3 Second-Round Picks at 37, 51, and 53. Knowing this, there might not be someone available late in the draft to address the Spurs current needs -- youth, Center and Shooting Guard.

However there are some decent Free Agents this summer the Spurs can realistically acquire. Aside from the obvious, youth, youth and more youth, Spurs do need a decent Center and an athletic 2-guard.

Let's face it the Spurs do not have a decent Center. Ian is constantly injured and unproven on the NBA level, Bonner loves to shoot 3's but does not rebound or have an inside game, Oberto is crap, and Thomas is servicable but you have to ask how much more does he have in the tank at his age.

As for the athletic shooting-guard again this is an area the Spurs need to address. Finley is ready for the retirement home, Manu's ankle is unreliable, and Hill is young and might be a good player if Pop simply plays him more. We saw in the regular season and the playoffs the Spurs did not have someone to create his own shot aside from Manu, when healthy.

So let's look at a few free agents who could come into the fold and contribute.

Center:
Zaza Pachulia -- Hawks (Unrestricted). This guy is tough, young, can board and score. He does not back down, ask KG, and can be the "banger" the Spurs need to play along side Duncan. Pachulia is a big part of the Hawks recent success, helping them grab the number 4 seed in the East. His 2008-2009 avergaes were: 6.2 points and 5.7 rebounds. May not seem much but toughness is something the Spurs need in the paint.

Anderson Varejao -- Cavs (Unrestricted). Might not be out of the realm of possiblity for the Spurs to target him. Like Pachulia, this guy is physical, active in the paint, young and can board. His 2008-2009 avergaes were: 8.6 points and 7.2 rebounds. This is exactly what the Spurs need -- someone to rebound! Plays decent defense and can be a great "energizer" player.

Shooting Guard:
Dahntay Jones -- Nuggets (Unrestricted). Hustle, defense, young and can shoot the three however needs to work on creating his shot. In the playoffs proved he can play defense against the Lakers. Will be an ideal role player for the Spurs. His 2008-2009 avergaes were: 5.4 points and 1 assist. Now those averages may not grab you but he can be the defensive 2-guard to play the likes of Kobe, Josh Howard, and Wade. "People have seen that the one thing Dahntay has is a toughness about him," said TNT/YES analyst Mike Fratello, who coached Jones for 2 1/2 years in Memphis. He also has an reputation as "dirty" so I guess he fits right in the Spurs system.

Von Wafer -- Rockets (Unrestricted). Young, energizer, quick, and is ready. He stepped up when T-Mac went down and provided some offensive punch in the playoff series against the Blazers and Lakers. He has the ability to create his own shot but needs to improve his defense. His 2008-2009 avergaes were: 9.7 points and 1.1 assists.

Pachulia, Varejao, Jones and Wafer all would provide the Spurs with youth, defense, rebounds and scoring. Aside from Varejao they won't break the Spurs' bank. More importantly, they give the Spurs a shot in the arm.

With Josh Smith Available, Can He Be The Power Forward The Cavs Need?

You would never think of a guy like Josh Smith ever being made available on the trade market. He's only 23, yet completed his fifth season in the league. The 6'9", 240-pound power forward who jumped to the NBA straight out of high school in 2004 just came off a season where he put up 15.6 points and 7.2 rebounds in the best season the Hawks have had in a decade. The year before that, he had 17.2 and 8.2 after averaging 16.4 and 8.6 in 2006-07.

So why would the Hawks trade him again? Well, you would have to ask ESPN.com's NBA insider Chad Ford, who dropped this on Tuesday:

The big trade rumor flying around (if you're already tired of the Shaq-to-Cleveland talk) centers on the Hawks' Josh Smith.
Several league sources told ESPN.com that the Hawks have been working
hard the past few weeks to see whether they can find a taker for Smith.

The Hawks have some financial issues coming into the summer. Two key players, Mike Bibby and Marvin Williams, are free agents. So are a few others on the roster -- Josh Childress, Zaza Pachulia, and Ronald Murray. Although
the Hawks would like to keep those players, they can't afford to pay
all of them. That has opened the door to the possibility of trading
Smith, who, although talented, has a reputation as a difficult player
to coach.

The Hawks have had no problem finding teams interested in Smith. The
issue is the whopping $6 million trade kicker attached to his contract.
The trade kicker essentially would require the team that trades for
Smith to pay him the $6 million immediately. In this economic climate,
many owners will balk at the payment.

"You are going to see very few owners willing to do things like that
anymore," one GM said. "I'm not saying he's impossible to trade. There
are a few owners like Paul Allen, James Dolan, Mark Cuban and maybe
Daniel Gilbert who would pay the money. But there aren't many."

Again, this situation exemplifies the fact that a bad economic situation means a good opportunity for the Cavs. Owner Dan Gilbert is now having his name clumped in with guys like Paul Allen (one of the 10 richest people in the world), Mark Cuban (one of the most visible sports team owners in the world), and James Dolan (the Chairman of Cablevision).

The high-flying Smith was also tied with Chicago's Tyrus Thomas for
16th in the league in dunks this past season with 102. Dunking may be
more style than substance, but it's as close to a sure thing that you
can get for two points. On the Cavs, by contrast, the next highest dunk
total behind LeBron's 128 (tied for seventh) was Anderson Varejao's 40
(tied with Darko for 74th) and J.J. Hickson's 34 (six-way tie for 88th).

He's also one of the top shot-blockers in the league, as last year was the first time in his career that he averaged less than 2.0 blocks per game (1.6). Smith averaged 2.8 in 2007-08 and 2.9 in 2006-07. On a team with a solid defensive blueprint looking for an athletic shot-blocker, Smith just might be the final piece of the puzzle.

My good friend RockKing over at "Waiting For Next Year" addresses the naysayers for Smith perfectly in this comment in his own piece from Tuesday:

"The Hawks were a team NOTORIOUS for their lack of leadership. They had
no identity, and they tended to play without much of a gameplan. Get
Josh Smith in Cleveland where there is a clearly defined leader and a
clearly defined offensive identity, and the results would probably be a
lot different."

And for those around the web who have endlessly been comparing Smith to Drew Gooden, please stop. In his wildest dreams, Gooden might be half the defender that Smith is. He might be half as good of a finisher around the rim as Smith. Sure, their shot selections both leave a lot to be desired, but that's where the comparisons end.

Far be it for anyone to claim that Josh Smith is the panacea for anything that ails the Cavs, but it gives them a young power forward whose career symmetry aligns with LeBron's. James is 24 while Smith is 23. And speaking of the 20-year old Hickson, Smith is what the Cavs envision when they look at their 19th overall pick out of N.C. State last year.

However, Smith can contribute right away while Hickson may be a couple of years away. Hickson is also not a guarantee to pan out, so the fact that the Hawks want to move Smith's huge contract (which he
just signed last summer) should have Danny Ferry dialing up the ATL
immediately.

And fact that the $6 million trade kicker will block
a lot of teams who want Smith from seriously getting involved in the
bidding is a Godsend. Given the Cavaliers current situation (and trust me, times are
bordering on "desperate" right now), money should be no object. $6
million seems like quarters when compared to what might happen to this
organization if you-know-what happens. So if he Cavs are just as convinced that Smith can complete their championship puzzle, that $6 million should be no issue at all for a millionaire like Gilbert.

Smith is due to make $10.8 million next season and is signed through the 2012-13 season, during which he'll make $13.2 million. The Hawks would certainly want a combination of young talent, expiring contracts, and draft picks in return. Hickson, an Atlanta native, would probably have to be involved as a potential replacement for Smith in the ATL. The Cavs would probably try to pawn off Sasha Pavlovic's non-guaranteed contract as well to provide the Hawks with instant cap relief as they have a number of free agents this summer.

After that, it gets hairy. Delonte West has garnered a ton of interest from some teams, and it has been said that West's inclusion in a trade with the Phoenix Suns last February was a deal-breaker in the proposed deal for Shaquille O'Neal. Would the Hawks want a 26-year old combo guard like West if they're giving away their best frontcourt player? Or do the Cavs think that Hickson's inclusion in this trade is more than enough? Perhaps they meet halfway and throw in Daniel Gibson into the mix?

And if the two teams happen to talk about this before next week's draft, Atlanta may also look for the Cavs to include their first-round pick, the 30th overall selection.

Yet another possibility can be including Anderson Varejao in a sign-and-trade and sending him to the Hawks along with Hickson and Pavlovic.

Something tells me that if the Cavs are looking for a young, long-term solution at power forward, Josh Smith is as good as it's going to get. They just don't have the pieces for Amar'e Stoudemire if STAT ever becomes available. If they want Chris Bosh, then they're going to have to wait for the summer of 2010 and free agency, because if they don't have the pieces for STAT, they certainly don't have the pieces for Bosh.

Smith is neither Amar'e or Bosh, but he's a heck of a solution and a great fit for the Cavs on both ends of the floor. He gives them an athletic flyer who can go above the rim on offense (name me one Cavalier who could do that besides LeBron during LeBron's entire career) while blocking shots and being an anchor on defense.

It makes too much sense. Not "special" enough in which they part with Delonte West (because if you're not familiar with the Cavs' line of thinking, West is a very special team player), but getting Smith while not having to give up any of the starters makes this team better than Orlando in a seven-game series.

If you're a Cavs fan, you just may have your new mancrush for the summer. The next move belongs to Ferry.

Will Shaq and LeBron Together Finally Give Cleveland a Title?

Lakers win easy, LA rolls to title

Rumors of Shaquille O'Neal heading to Cleveland has sprouted a lot of thoughts. Some thoughts questioning possibilities, some thoughts stating facts and/or opinions.

One question is obvious: Will the pair of Shaq and LeBron end up as ugly as the rest of Shaq's relationships?

In the late '90s, the Big Aerostotle split up with guard Penny Hardaway, leaving the Magic and heading to LA. As per usual, he did the same with star guard Kobe Bryant, only this time, Shaq headed to Miami. Dwyane Wade criticized Shaq after his production took a turn for the worst -- due to injuries and age -- and called him out during a media press conference. Although the departure was not as quite as ugly as the previous two, there was certainly tension between the two All-Stars.

One statement is obvious: Cleveland would be a scary team if they acquired O'Neal. The one glaring weakness I could find in the '08-09 Cavs team was lack of consistent and efficient big men.

I've already expressed my disliking for Zydrunas Ilgauskas, and Ben Wallace could possibly retire (he could also be part of the trade between Phoenix and Cleveland). Anderson Varejao will surely weigh offers he gets when roaming the free agent market with the possibility of winning a championship in Cleveland. J.J. Hickson still has a lot to learn before becoming one of the Cavs main big men in the rotation.

But one question that instantly went through people's heads when hearing this news was: Will Shaq and LeBron as a pair give Cleveland its first title in 45 years?

Let's take a look.

Trade Speculation And The Bulls' Offseason

Every Bulls fan thinks he/she has a brilliant idea for the perfect trade, if only Jerry Reinsdorf would take the time to listen. I'm no exception. I found a few trade ideas on Blog-a-Bull (my personal favorite Bulls blog) that I've provided links to, some good, some lousy. I'll throw in a couple ideas of my own as well. Feel free to share your own ideas in the comments.

Washington/Bulls 2-way
Bulls get: PF Antawn Jamison, F Darius Songaila, and #5 pick
Wizards get: PG Kirk Hinrich and F Tyrus Thomas
I'm not a fan of this idea, and I don't think the Wizards would like it either. The Wizards would lose their only good post player (which are hard to come by right now), and we would have an undersized backcourt (if Gordon stays) with atrocious defensive abilities. John Salmons would be our starting SG if Ben Gordon left, and I'm not sold on Salmons guarding quick shooting guards.

Spurs/Bulls 2-way
Bulls get: F Bruce Bowen and C Fabricio Oberto
Spurs get: G/F John Salmons
This looks terrible at first (and maybe second) glance, but there actually is some solid logic to back this up. Bowen and Oberto hold non-guaranteed contracts, and we would release them both. The Spurs would get a good scorer for free, and releasing Oberto and Bowen would allow them to go back to San Antonio after a brief wait. Meanwhile, the Bulls would free up some cap space to re-sign Ben Gordon. However, I do like Salmons and the extra offense he brings, and, if we fail to re-sign Gordon, Salmons' scoring would be missed. I'd rather get more for Salmons than just cap space, if at all possible. Otherwise, we should just keep him, as he played pretty well for us last year.

Clippers/Bulls 2-way
Bulls get: #1 pick
Clippers get: PG Derrick Rose
This looks terrible at first, second, and all subsequent glances. That's because it is terrible. It's downright awful. Derrick Rose is going to be a superstar, and he makes everyone around him better. Blake Griffin will likely be a very good player in the NBA, but he's not a sure thing (nothing is, just look at Michael Olowokandi), and Rose has proven he has what it takes to become an elite point guard. This trade idea deserves a communal booing. Boo!

Raptors/Bulls 2-way
Bulls get: PF Chris Bosh
Raptors get: PG Kirk Hinrich and SF Luol Deng
This won't work. Why would the Raptors want Hinrich when they have Calderon? Why would they want two huge contracts when neither player was consistently healthy and productive last season? I'd love to see it happen, but it won't.

Pistons/Bulls 2-way
Bulls get: SF Tayshaun Prince
Pistons get: SF Luol Deng and #26 pick
Easily the most poorly written post I've ever read. Add to that the fact that the Pistons would never be dumb enough to make the trade, and I'm honestly not sure why I even bothered mentioning the post. Comic relief, I guess.

There are also tons of ideas involving package deals with the Blazers, most of which involve Hinrich leaving and Steve Blake and Travis Outlaw coming to Chicago. Provided we don't give up much else, I like that idea. Here are some ideas of my own:

Bulls/Kings 2-way
Bulls get: F/C Jason Thompson, SF Donte Greene and PG Beno Udrih
Kings get: PG Kirk Hinrich and #16 pick (or future 1st round pick)
With this scenario, we get a solid PF who can rebound consistently and play three positions fairly well (he had a 15.7 PER as a PF and a 16.1 PER as a C, according to 82games.com). Udrih could also be a serviceable backup for Rose, while the Kings would get a much-needed upgrade at point guard. They already have the 4th pick in the draft, which they could use to replace Thompson, and they could use the Bulls' 16th pick to improve that awful bench of theirs. Greene makes the salaries balance out, which is the only real reason his name appears in the trade.

Hornets/Bulls 2-way
Bulls get: PF David West
Hornets get: F Tyrus Thomas and G/F John Salmons
I think West would complement Noah well, as West could use his range to stretch the D, freeing Noah up down low. Both could rebound well and run the court, which would keep our up-tempo offense going, and the Bulls would finally have the low-post scoring threat they've needed. The Hornets, in return, would get Thomas to replace West, and maybe they could do a better job of getting him to use his potential. Chris Paul could work some nice alley-oops with Tyrus, and Salmons would provide the Hornets with a much-needed scorer.

Hawks/Bulls 2-way
Bulls get: SG Joe Johnson and C Randolph Morris
Hawks get: PG Kirk Hinrich and G/F John Salmons
This is not very likely to happen, but, if Mike Bibby doesn't re-sign with Atlanta, they'll need a point guard. Salmons could help replace Johnson's scoring, and Hinrich would do a good job of replacing Bibby. Johnson's a free agent in 2010, so the Hawks might want to at least explore the possibility of moving him, since there's no guarantee he'll stay beyond 2010. Morris balances the salaries, and does little else in this deal. I would really love to see this deal happen, but, once again, I think the chances of this happening are slim.
