NBA Outsider: Utah Jazz Draft Follow Up

Zach Harding from MVN's Jazz It Up gives post-2009 draft coverage for the Utah Jazz.

After last Thursday's 2009 NBA Draft in New York City, the Jazz came away with a pure-type point guard in Eric Maynor (6'3", 170, Senior) from Virginia Commonwealth and another long-shooting big man in Goran Suton (6'10", 265, Senior) out of 2008-09 NCAA Tournament Championship runner-up Michigan State.

I think that the Jazz did rather well with the spots they had at No. 20 in the first round and No. 50 in the second. From what it looks like, the Jazz did their homework and research and had Maynor targeted to fill the back-up point guard spot behind Deron Williams which has been lacking and one of Utah's main soft spots in their lineup. I was hoping they could find a solid 2-guard who could defend the league's potent shooting guards like Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Brandon Roy, Michael Redd and others, with more speed and toughness. However, I know that is especially tough to come by in even a first round draft pick, especially all the way at no. 20. Those guys usually don't develop until after a few years when it comes to defending NBA offensive threats anyway. And, Ronnie Brewer has not been doing too shabby of a job of it lately, although he has much room to improve as well.

Looking at Maynor, he definitely will need to put on some more bulk and weight in muscle, but he is quick, team-minded and a defender at the point spot, as he calls himself a "true point guard" as well. I like what I see in him and I think he can develop into a solid back-up and even to run the floor at the same time as Williams at times at the 2 spot.

With Suton, it looks like they did their best at that spot in the draft. There were not too many quality guys down that far and to get a guy like Suton with his championship run experience his Senior year and his ability to follow in the footsteps of Mehmet Okur outside is not bad. However, I don't really see him contributing a lot, especially when the Jazz already have a guy like that in Mehmet Okur. He could possibly develop into a quality guy down the road, but he also could be well-used in a trade to build the Jazz's weaknesses up in another area.

Overall, I think the Jazz were able to accomplish their goals in the draft with an A- grade level performance, filling the back-up point spot with Maynor. Where it is lacking a little is that they did not find a shooting guard, but they do have Brewer and it doesn't seem like that was a main goal. I think they also went with Suton just in case if things did not come to where they would like with the options for Okur and Boozer to opt out of their contracts for next year, which they did not as fresh news of today. So, they were ensuring a back-up plan and I think that was a smart thing to do. Another void is a shot-blocking presence, but as the draft was a point guard-heavy draft, I feel the Jazz did the smartest thing in going with the strong position of the draft as it was also a main position in their back-up point guard spot that they needed to fill. Well done Kevin O'Connor and Jazz brass = A- Draft Grade

NBA trade buzz continues to build

The Atlanta Hawks and Golden State Warriors are closing in on a deal that would send Jamal Crawford to the Hawks for Acie Law and Speedy Claxton.

Nam's take: This is an interesting trade for the Hawks. It will definitely have an impact on what type of contract offer they give to Mike Bibby. Crawford is not a true point guard but he is a prolific scorer. I would have preferred the Hawks re-sign Bibby and try and find a legit center because a frontcourt of Zaza Pachulia and Al Horford won't cut it.

Stu's take: Crawford is a good player, and will certainly be an offensive spark plug for Atlanta. However, Crawford does not have a history of being a winner and has shown that he needs to be a volume shooter to be a successful contributor to a team. A talent upgrade for Atlanta? Absolutely? Does it bump them up a tier within the East? I don't think so.

The Portland Trail Blazers acquire the 22nd pick in Thursday's NBA Draft from the Dallas Mavericks for the 24th and 56th picks in this year's draft, and a 2010 second round pick.

Nam's take: Word around the league is that the Sacramento Kings are interested in Omri Casspi from Israel with the 23rd pick. Casspi is a lanky 6'9'' post that plays all out and can step back and shoot the three-ball. Casspi would be a good pick for the Blazers, who can provide some toughness in the front court. Other possible selections for the Blazers could be Florida's Nick Calathes, Pittsburgh's DeJuan Blair, Georgetown's DeJuan Summers, or VCU's Eric Maynor.

Stu's take: Who knows what the Blazers are up to. I've heard Ty Lawson rumblings recently, but they seem a bit unfounded given the recent Kirk Hinrich rumblings as well. Something's got to give. While this trade might indicate that they have their sights set on a specific player (possibly Casspi), it also could be used as a more valuable chip in a larger trade. I expect Kevin Pritchard to be up to his old tricks again this year, and we can definitely expect more draft activity from Portland.

There are strong indications that the Pistons will be very active this offseason. They are planning to pursue Ben Gordon aggressively. They also wish to sign Carlos Boozer but will walk away if he demands $14 or $15 million.

Nam's take: Boozer would be smart to just exercise his $12.6 million option and wait for 2010's free agency market. I don't believe Ben Gordon will be the answer for the Pistons to move back into the Eastern Conference's elite teams. They have a decent core with Rodney Stuckey, Richard Hamilton, and Tayshaun Prince. In order to battle with the Dwight Howard's and Kevin Garnett's they will need some young, athletic big men to support the aging Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess.

Stu's take: The addition of Gordon would be redundant with their current core in place (Stuckey, Hamiltion), although Detroit's interest may mean there is some truth behind their shopping of Hamilton. Gordon did show his grit and determination throughout that epic first round battle against Boston, and he definitely has higher value than he did last year. Boozer would be a nice addition to any team for the right price, and he would be a nice addition to the Pistons - especially if 'Sheed isn't playing with his threats of early retirement. I agree with Nam though, in this shaky economy, Boozer might be better off staying put until the market rebounds.

Chicago has been very willing to part with Tyrus Thomas however; Kirk Hinrich's name continues to come up on the Blazers wish list given their growing pessimism with Phoenix unlikely to trade Steve Nash or attempting to sign Jason Kidd away from Dallas.

Nam's take: The Blazers are obviously trying to find a point guard that can take them to next level; someone they can pair with superstar Brandon Roy in the backcourt. If they do find another PG they will have to get rid one of their current PGs, so there won't be any controversy in shared playing time.

Stu's take: The point guard situation in Portland is such an enigma, but it's looking like there will be changes in the backcourt whether it is through trading for a vet or building through the draft. Sergio Rodriguez is as good as gone after expressing his desire to be elsewhere next season. Steve Blake was highly criticized after an unproductive series against the Rockets this year. And Jerryd Bayless is somewhat of an unproven commodity, although people in Portland love his intensity, toughness and ability to get to the rack. But, we all know, you have to give something up to get something back. One or two of these guys might be packing their bags this offseason.

The Top Five NBA Players To Never Win a Championship

It's that winning a championship is the greatest feeling you could ever have. The ultimate accomplishment, the most significant achievement, and the most memorable moment of glory. Sadly, not all players, even greats, are able to win championships.

And those greats especially are deprived of something extraordinary. Deprived of hoisting that Larry O'Brien trophy high in the air so all can see. Deprived of raising the banner the subsequent season as proof that they were champions. Deprived of winning on the most important stage, and having the privilege to say that you were victorious in the Finals. In some cases, players are not elected into the Hall Of Fame simply because they weren't winners in the Association.

But which players are seen as "the best of the best (that did not win a ring)?" To answer that question, I've compiled a list of the top five players to never win a championship. Read on after the jump...

Hey, Danny Ferry: If Trading Up To Draft Sam Young Is Wrong, You Don't Want To Be Right

Besides the strong possibility of LeBron James picking up his player option for 2010-11 and J.J. Hickson sparking the interest of many General Managers around the league, we learned one more important tidbit in our interview with beat writer Brian Windhorst last week:

Danny Ferry and University of Pittsburgh head coach Jamie Dixon are very close.

That would be the same Dixon who coached '09 draft prospect Sam Young for four years at Pittsburgh. The same Sam Young that Ferry is rumored to have a strong interest in for this month's draft. The same Sam Young whose athleticism, length, and strong potential as a wing defender would fit in perfectly -- oh, so perfectly -- for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

If only the Cavs were drafting 19th in this year's draft like last year. Hey, they didn't win a championship this year, so what's the difference?

That's because Young will, in all likelihood, be gone by the time the Cavs are making their scheduled selection at pick #30. That is, unless they move up into the early 20's to tab their guy from Pitt.

Young is a James Posey in the making. He's athletic, has a big wingspan, and can be a threat to hit the outside shot. And while some will look at his age of 24 and say that he's too old to be a rookie, the Cavs will look at him as the perfect fit as a seasoned four-year college veteran who won't take much time to work his way into the rotation.

Here's what the draft experts have had to say about Young, whose stock has (unfortunately for the Cavs) exploded in the past few weeks:

Positives:

Powerful, athletic forward

Can score both inside and out

Has a nice midrange jumper

Developing 3-point shot

Excellent rebounder for his size

Master of the shot fake

Negatives:

Still learning a new position

Has more potential to play tougher on the defensive end

Turns 24 in March

-Chad Ford, ESPN.com

Sam Young has an awesome profile for a defender at the next level, but his
ability to translate some of his situation skills to the next level
will determine how effectively he can display them.

Blessed with athleticism, strength, and an excellent body, Sam Young looks the part and has the work ethic to be a defensive specialist at
the next level. Certain parts of his offensive game fit the description
of an effective role-player as well. Young was a real go-to guy in
college, ranking second on our list in possessions used (17.8) while
posting an efficient PPP of 1.03 (5th). Most of his scoring comes from
two specific areas: his finishing ability and his catch and shoot jump
shot. Around the rim, Young is ranked 4th in this group at 6.5 Pos/G
and is 2nd at 1.27 PPP. His 44% shooting in catch and shoot situations
is good for 4th and he ranks 3rd in terms of possessions at 5 per game.
If he improves the range on his jumper to acclimate the 37.2%
three-point percentage he posted as a senior past the NBA-line, he
could become a viable offensive role-player who is an even better
defender, a la James Posey.

The fact that he shot 49% from the field on 1.9 Pos/G in the post is a
nice compliment to his ability to impact the game with the possessions
his teammates create for him, and really highlights the toughness and
physicality he brings to the table. Where Young struggles is in his
ability to create his own shot , converting on just 17/56 or 30% of his
isolation opportunities. His ball-handling skills don't allow him to be
much of a threat in transition or operating on the pick and roll, and
he is not particularly prolific in terms of his ability to shoot off
the dribble.

-Draftexpress.com

A great athlete, possessing a strong body with a tremendous wingspan ...
Has shown major improvements through the course of his college career ...
Has put in serious work on his jumpshot, as a result he has become a
reliable threat from the outside ... One of the better leapers in
college, he is able to finish with a variety of highlight plays ... Even
though it looks very awkward, his shot fake is surprisingly effective
and it allows him to get by the defense ... His strong body gives him the
luxury of absorbing contact when attacking the basket ... For all of his
offensive gains, he is still a more valuable asset on the defensive end
... His combination of size, length and athleticism allow him to lock
down players from a variety of positions ... He works extremely hard
moving his feet and even though he is very aggressive, he is fairly
disciplined and doesn't take careless gambles.

-nbadraft.net

At 6'6" and 223, Young is strong enough to back up LeBron at the "3" and quick and athletic enough to back up Delonte West at the "2." At 24, he's another young piece that the Cavs can add to their core nucleus around LeBron James, and with his 6'10.75" wingspan (as per draftexpress.com), he'd be a great answer to throw out there at guys like Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis if and when the Magic come up again in the playoffs.

Just as the Magic did with Courtney Lee at the 22nd pick last year, it's possible that the Cavaliers could be getting a rotation player right off the bat through the draft, the first time that Ferry would have ever done that in his tenure as GM. But it will be difficult to get him.

ESPN.com's Chad Ford has Young going 20th to Utah in his fourth mock draft, the highest that the Pitt Panther has been in any of Ford's mocks. Draftexpress.com has him going 23rd in their mock as of June 15th, and nbadraft.net has Young going 28th to Minnesota. So as you can probably figure out by now, it will be an absolute stunner if Young falls to 30th to the Cavs.

A stunner...and a risk. A risk that the Cavs, especially at this point, can't afford to take.

The Cavs are going to have to trade up, and trade up a considerable number of spots. They have the 30th and 46th picks in the draft as ammunition. The Cavs would also have to look at including cash in getting the pick, then going back and buying their way back into the second round (like they did last year for Darnell Jackson). This definitely isn't the summer to spare expenses.

Young's versatility in playing multiple positions (the two and the three) would be a heck of an asset on a team that has its cornerstone (LeBron) able to play any one of four positions. Young averaged 31.8 minutes a game this past year for a Pittsburgh team that advanced all the way to the Elite Eight before losing a heartbreaker to Villanova, who lost to eventual champion North Carolina.

In that game against Nova, Young put up 28 points and seven boards to lead the Panthers. He had 19 points in the team's 60-55 win over Xavier in the "Sweet 16," 32 points and eight boards in their 84-76 win over Oklahoma State in the second round, and 14 points and 13 boards in Pitt's 72-62 first round win over Eastern Tennessee State. For the year, Young averaged 19.2 points and 6.3 rebounds while shooting 37.2 percent from 3-point range.

Every year, there is one player who usually ends up making a large handful of GM's look like idiots for letting him drop so low in the draft. Last year, it was Western Kentucky's Courtney Lee, who stayed in college through his senior year and went 22nd overall. Today, he's the starter at shooting guard for the Eastern Conference champion Orlando Magic.

Young, who like Lee is a little older than his draft counterparts and stayed for his senior year, has the potential to out-do the Western Kentucky product. Young's game will translate well into the pros, and since most rookies have to start out by making a name for themselves on defense, this is where Young can excel. His ideal size and tremendous wingspan make him well-equipped to defend both the two and the three in the NBA.

He also has the potential to develop a consistent perimeter game on offense, which should all but polish off his resume in becoming a future Cavalier.

As if wheeling and dealing for help around the league isn't difficult enough for Ferry, he'll have to wheel and deal in the draft as well if Sam Young is in his plans.

But for an organization that has had a difficult time building itself through the draft, this should be Ferry's first priority. And the last thing he wants to see is another Eastern Conference team drafting a guy right under his nose on its way to making him a starter.

Especially one that is quietly building a team that could be on its way to sending the Cavs home early for summer next year.

Exploring the Cleveland Cavaliers' Offseason Options, Part 2: Milwaukee's Charlie Villanueva

The NBA offseason hasn't even officially begun yet, but one guy has already seen his name become linked continually with the Cavs' offseason plans.

And surprise, surprise: That guy happens to play for the Cavs' new farm team, the Milwaukee Bucks.

Milwaukee forward Charlie Villanueva, who will be a restricted free agent this summer, was on ESPN Radio last Wednesday when the topic of his free agency came up. Radio host Freddie Coleman asked the UConn product what he thought about joining LeBron in Cleveland, and the former 2005 lottery pick had this to say:

"Cleveland definitely is not a bad spot. I've played with LeBron. I
played with LeBron in the McDonald's All-American Game, and we played
well together. Is there a possibility? Yes. Will it happen? Time will
tell.

"I think I would be able to help out a lot, just the
fact I bring my versatility and create mismatch problems. One of the
reasons Orlando is in the Finals is because of Rashard Lewis. They have
a legitimate big man that demands attention, and they
surround him with guys that can play on the perimeter."

And if it's a scoring punch that the Cavs need, then that's what they'll get from Charlie Villanueva. The 6'11", 232-pound forward played in 78 games this past season, started in 47 of them, and averaged about 27 minutes per game. But he did considerable damage in those 27 minutes, averaging 16.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game while shooting 44.7 percent from the floor and 83.8 percent from the free throw line.

Not only that, but Villanueva is a 3-point threat despite his label as a power forward. He shot 34.5 percent (89-for-258) from downtown. Imagine having a gun like that on the floor with Mo Williams and Delonte West to open up the floor for LeBron James, and there are no questions that this guy is a serious upgrade in the frontcourt.

The 24-year old (he turns 25 in August) was an absolute beast in the dog days of January and February. In 18 games in January (10 which were starts), Villanueva averaged 20.2 points and 7.0 rebounds while shooting 51.7 percent from the field and 44.1 percent (30-for-68) from 3-point range. In 11 games during February, all of which were starts, he put up 21.6 points and 6.6 boards while shooting 47.6 percent from the field and 42.1 percent (24-for-57) from downtown.

What would it take to get Villanueva? Well, he's a restricted free agent, but the Cavs don't have cap space. The most they can give Villanueva is the midlevel exception, which will be somewhere between $5.5 million and $6 million. However, the Bucks would easily match that, seeing that they have overpaid for far inferior talent in the past.

The only catch is that the Bucks are right up against the luxury tax, and they are one of the handful of teams in the league that do not want to pay that tax at any cost. It's much more reasonable that the Cavs and Bucks work out a sign-and-trade for Villanueva, who would easily command far more than the midlevel exception.

However, upon studying the league's collective bargaining agreement, there may be some complications with doing a sign-and-trade:

Base year compensation (BYC) prevents another salary cap loophole.
Without BYC, a team over the salary cap that wants to trade a player,
but can't because of the Traded Player exception (which says teams
can't take back more than 125% of the salary they trade away), could
just sign the player to a new contract that fits within the desired
range, then do the trade. BYC says "if you re-sign a player and give
him a big raise, then for a period of time his trade value will be
        lower than his actual salary."

BYC defines the salary that's used to compare players for compliance
under the Traded Player exception (see question number 68
for more information about the Traded Player exception)...

...Here is an example of a BYC calculation: A player earned $2 million in
2004-05, after which he became a free agent. He then signs a new contract
(re-signing with his previous team, which is over the salary cap) starting
at $9 million. This player qualifies for BYC, so his trade value is the
greater of his previous salary ($2 million) or 50% of his new salary ($4.5
million), or $4.5 million. So this player, who actually earns $9 million,
is worth $4.5 million for trading purposes.

Now, this will be helpful when considering the pursuit of other restricted free agent big men like Paul Millsap of Utah or David Lee of New York. But for the intent and purposes of acquiring Villanueva, he made about $3.4 million last year (source: Hoopshype). You would have to think that he would command a deal close to $10 million a year considering that he's a young big man who is nowhere close to his prime.

Say his agent gets him a deal for five years and $55 million, and the Bucks want to deal him to the Cavs. If that contract has escalators, then it's probably going to be worth about $10 million during the first year, making Villanueva's "BYC" value about $5 million. If that's the case, the Cavs can send Sasha Pavlovic's non-guaranteed contract for $4.9 million along with J.J. Hickson to the Bucks in a sign-and-trade to get the deal done.

If the Cavs are going to be players in restricted free agency, then they're probably going to have to hope for big contracts like that. Seeing that Pavlovic's non-guaranteed contract along with a young piece like Hickson will be attractive pieces, using them in trades for contracts smaller than $10 million for the first year will be difficult, if not impossible, under the league's trade provisions.

Regardless, seeing the 6'11" and soon-to-be 25-year old Villanueva suit up alongside LeBron, Mo, and Delonte would be amazing to watch (unless you're one of the other 29 teams in the league). Villanueva's versatility as a big man who can shoot to pair with the Cavs' sharp-shooting backcourt would be a great match.

If the Cavs find a way to sign Villanueva and re-sign Anderson Varejao, then it would give Mike Brown amazing depth as well as the means to change up rotations in the playoffs depending on matchups. Imagine having Villanueva try to stay with Rashard Lewis, a similar player, while LeBron covers Hedo Turkoglu instead of seeing LeBron shadow Rashard and the 6'3" Delonte West cover the 6'10 Turkoglu. Liking this deal already, eh?

But we've got about three weeks until free agency begins, so only time will tell how this plays out.

2009 NBA Playoffs: NBA FINALS Predictions

#1 Los Angeles Lakers (WEST) Vs #3 Orlando Magic (EAST)
So it's set! The Disney Finals! Boy, do I miss the Disney afternoon...

Anyway... let's talk about the NBA Finals and look at this very, uh, unbiased preview!

Let's get dangerous.

THE LOS ANGELES LAKERS. Last year, they got their ass kicked in the Finals by the Boston Celtics. It's already <strike>amazing</strike> astounding that they made the Finals after a couple of first round failures in the previous two years. So they set out on a mission to get rougher, tougher, and meaner to get back to the big stage.

And they did in the first fifth of the season. They rolled through the competition with crisp offense and effective (if not, frantic) defense. Along the way, Andrew Bynum got hurt yet again... but they got him back in time for the Playoffs.

Somewhere along the line, they got bored. They would get up for the big games against Boston or Cleveland... but then they would play lazy against teams like Indiana or Charlotte. Still, they finished with the best record in the West with a 65-17 record.

They dispatched of Utah rather quickly in the first round... but then the LAZY Lakers came out against Houston. Houston pushed them to seven games before L.A. finally decided that enough was enough. They then went through a rough-and-tumble series against Denver before they saved their best play in the last two games of the series. It was a lot of head-scratching, hair-pulling, angst, and wall-punching because of these up-and-down Lakers... but they're back and they seem to be focusing and peaking at the right time. A lot of people said that they don't deserve to win the title... but what matters is that they GOT to the Finals.

THE ORLANDO MAGIC. For a lot of the year, we always thought they were one step or one piece away from the championship. We all thought that Boston and Cleveland were simply too strong to take on.

But they did show that they belonged. Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis were all-stars, yes... but Jameer Nelson became one, too, after playing out of his mind and showing leadership that kept the Magic focused on the prize. When Nelson was lost for the year, they swung a trade to get Rafer Alston to solidify the point guard position. They finished third again in the Eastern Conference... but improved by seven wins from the previous season.

A lot of people certainly didn't take the Magic seriously after they struggled to put away the Philadelphia 76ers. But it was the series against Boston (without Kevin Garnett) that took them to another level. They finished off Boston in seven (at their house) and this was after surviving a Big Baby game-winner in Game 4.

And then they went against the Cleveland Cavaliers (crowned by the media and fans as champions 403 times in the playoffs). Cleveland came into the series on fire (8-0 in the playoffs). But Orlando stole Game 1 from them. The LeBron James game-winner from Game 2 didn't bother Orlando too much as they won Games 3 and 4. Orlando went on to "shock" Cleveland in six games as they prevented a Kobe Vs LeBron match-up in the Finals. Orlando grew up in the postseason right in front of our eyes. Dwight Howard punctuated the Cleveland series with a career-high 40 points... and both sides of the floor seem to be clicking for them Magicians. We expect Dwight to be MORE of a beast in this series.

Now... the main storyline right now is that Jameer Nelson may play in the Finals. I don't think it changes the gameplan much for the Lakers but I think they do get a more consistent jumpshooter in Jameer. However, he hasn't played in four months so he may not even play that much. Basically, if Jameer plays, the Lakers just have to watch out even more from the perimeter. And we all know L.A.'s trouble on defending the outside.

All right. Both teams don't lack star power. L.A. has Kobe, Pau Gasol, and Lamar Odom. Orlando has Dwight, Rashard, and Hedo Turkoglu. The other starters are obviously going to be important. On L.A.'s side, Derek Fisher hasn't played good ball since he came off his suspension... although Trevor Ariza has been tearin' it up from downtown. Andrew Bynum has the unenviable task to guard D12... but I think it's more of a confidence issue for him. As for Orlando? Rafer is as hit or miss as they come. As for Courtney Lee? She sounds hot.

(The picture above? She LOOKS like a Courtney Lee.)

But for real, though, this will be a huge test for Lee.

Their benches? Well, Odom will come off the bench with Bynum starting... and Luke Walton, Jordan Farmar, and Sasha Vujacic have played better... but not consistently. Orlando's Mickael Pietrus played great against Cleveland and I assume that he'll be the hellish, athletic defender and 3-point shooter. Kinda like the Lakers' Ariza. Orlando can also rely on Anthony Johnson, Marcin Gortat (POLISH HAMMA!), and J.J. Redick for some steady play... but the Magic's bench has obviously been Pietrus.

Laker fans feared this match-up. Magic has shooters all over the place (including their 6'10" forwards) and the worst part of the Lakers game has been their perimeter defense (especially when lazy). But I don't think the Lakers will be lazy since the stakes are high once again. They have to be like the Gummi Bears. Bouncing here and there and everywhere...

Plus they are longer than Cleveland. The Lakers aren't dwarves at all.

I don't think the Magic will have as many open looks (assuming they don't play lazy perimeter D) as they did against the Cavs. Dwight Howard will eat up the middle so the Lakers will try to use all 18 fouls on him (expect our favorite, DJ Mbenga, to get some burn). But the whole Lakers frontline can score, too, and they will certainly make Turkoglu and Lewis work. That's what doomed Cleveland in the first place.

As much as Orlando has grown up, they are in a whole new world.

The Lakers know what they're in for now. When focused, I don't think ANY team can beat them. We also know that L.A. has this dude named Kobe Bryant, who is as chill as they come at the end of games. And he'll be the difference-maker in every game that they play.

REY'S PREDICTION: Lakers in 6.
PETER: Orlando in 6.*
JIMMY: Lakers in 6.
NICK: Lakers in 6.
DAVE: Lakers in 7.* (is really hoping for Orlando in 6.)
TONY: Coming soon.

*They hate the Lakers.

I also got predictions from the Lady Ballers.

COLLEEN: Orlando in 7.
ALEXIS: Orlando in 6.
JESSICA: Orlando in 6.
CHERYL: Orlando in 6.
ELIZABETH: Orlando in 6.
LISA: Orlando in 5.

But then I forgot that they're ALL from Orlando! Ha ha ha ha.

Get'cha head in the game!

Time to watch some Lion King.

2009 NBA Mock Draft - Version 2.0

A week and a half after publishing Version 1.0,
it's time to edit the first round of the draft. There will be many
picks that don't change, but there are definitely some risers and
fallers and that will be depicted in this version.

1. Los Angeles Clippers - Blake Griffin, F, Oklahoma

This is a no-brainer pick. He has been the #1 pick in this draft
since last November and has won every Player of the Year award you can
think of. I've already posted my thoughts on this pick
for the Clippers, so I won't go over it again. He's got the potential
to be a top power forward in the league in a few years, but also if he
doesn't develop much of an offensive game, could have already plateud.
I don't expect that to happen, so he will develop into a very good,
borderline great, power forward in the league.

2. Memphis Grizzlies - Ricky Rubio, G, Spain

Rubio's agent has already said they will do what they can to avoid him going to either Memphis or Oklahoma City,
but the same agent tried to do this with Yi last year and failed.
Ultimately, I think Rubio decides to play for whoever takes him and
Memphis, with the #2 pick, should take the 2nd best talent on the
board. People widely consider Rubio and Thabeet to round out the top-3
with Griffin, but I could see Memphis consider Jordan Hill at this pick
if they do not want to stunt the growth of Mike Conley, Jr. In the end,
Rubio is the pick and should embrace the chance to play with OJ Mayo
and Rudy Gay.

Memphis' brass has been over in Spain interviewing this kid and Marc
Gasol, fellow Spaniard, has talked to him as well and it seems as if
Rubio is coming around to the idea of being in Memphis.

3. Oklahoma City Thunder - Hasheem Thabeet, C, Connecticut

The Thunder have many holes and are not in a position to draft by,
well, position. Other than Westbrook, Durant and Jeff Green have
solidified their spots on this team. Nenad Krstic was a nice pickup
last year, but he's not a center you would want to build around.
Thabeet would give them an instant upgrade in the defense department
and if his offense ever comes around, he could become a really nice
player. He must bulk up, but who in the draft doesn't? Also considered
James Harden and DeMar DeRozan at this spot.

4. Sacramento Kings - Brandon Jennings, G, Italy

The Kings have drafted big men in the last two drafts with Spencer
Hawes and Jason Thompson. Both of them look as if they will grow into
good players in the league. Add to those two Kevin martin and Andres
Nocioni, the lack of a playmaking point guard really holds this team
back. Beno Udrih was given a horrible contract
and the Kings will be eating that while Jennings runs the show. Though
Jennings isn't a pure point guard, his scoring ability will be greatly
welcomed by the Kings.

5. Washington Wizards - Jordan Hill, F, Arizona

The Wizards are actually trying to shop the pick, but if they keep
it, I think Hill will be a great pick at #5. I think that Hill will be
the 3rd best prospect in the draft behind Blake Griffin and DeMar
DeRozan. Hill has developed his game to a higher level after every
season at Arizona and should only keep getting better. If he can add
more weight and some refined post moves, he'll be a very productive
player in this league.

Read the rest of the article here!

Dwight Drives Magic Past Cavs Into Finals

Cavs-Magic Game 4 Most Watched NBA Playoff Game in Cable TV History

This is why the NBA needs to get back to televising the conference finals games on network TV in prime time.

I'm sure you remember the days when you had Bulls-Knicks, Game 5, 6, or 7 on NBC at 9 p.m. Eastern. Or Sonics-Jazz. Or Rockets-Spurs. Or Knicks-Pacers.

Those were the good old days. Imagine if LeBron's 48-point special at Detroit in Game 5 of the East Finals in '07 was on ABC instead of freaking TNT.

Game 4 of these '09 East Finals was the most-watched NBA playoff game in the history of cable television. You'll remember it for the game where, if you're a Cavs fan, your pulse went into overdrive. It was the game where Orlando won, 116-114, in overtime to take a 3-1 series lead.

According to a report by the Associated Press on Thursday, Game 4 drew 10.1 million viewers. For the series, TNT is averaging a 5.2 national rating, meaning that 5.2 percent of all American households with a television were watching the game.

This is despite the fact that neither the Cavs or Magic are from a top-10 television market, destroying the silly theory that you have to be playing in a big city to reach out to as many fans as possible. It's the 21st century, but I still wonder when that line of thinking will go away.

That game was on Tuesday night. The previous evening, which was Memorial Day, ESPN drew 9.9 million viewers for Game 4 of the Nuggets-Lakers series, a 120-101 Denver victory that would prove to be their last win of the season.

In fact, after Game 6 of the Rockets-Lakers series became ESPN's most-watched basketball game ever, Games 1 and 2 of the Nuggets and Lakers destroyed that standing.

My bet? With LeBron and the heavily-favored Cavs on the ropes and a tremendously pressure-packed Game 6 on the horizon, Saturday night's game will obliterate all these previous standards.

Sure would have loved to have that on network TV in prime time, huh ABC?

Here's how Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals was done 16 years ago in 1993 on NBC, in prime time. This is what the buildup should have been for LeBron's 48-pointer in '07. This is what the buildup should have been for Thursday's huge Game 5 at The Q:

Panayotovich NBA Mock Draft: v. 1.0

After earning national recognition in 2007 for having the most accurate mock draft, I've got my work cut out for me yet again this summer. No worries though, I'm ready to hand it to Chad Ford for the third consecutive year row come June 25.

Remember, there is absolutely nothing set in stone at this point in time. Many changes will come about as team workouts get underway in the upcoming weeks. I'm trying to ignore all the ridiculous speculation and stay focused on penning in players where I believe they will best fit.

Things are going to get interesting after David Stern announces the reigning College Basketball Player of the Year as the top overall pick. With two players vying for the No. 2 selection, there's bound to be a domino effect for each impending scenario. Without further ado ...

1. Los Angeles -- Blake Griffin, PF, Oklahoma, So.
Headlining the 2009 draft class is the explosive Griffin, the most dominant player on the board. Blake's combination of size, speed and athleticism is second to none, and he's hands down the best player in the draft. If he can master the mid-range jumper, he'll be unstoppable. Taking Griffin is a no-brainer regardless of the plethora of big men on the Clips roster. Talk about winning the lottery.

2. Memphis -- Ricky Rubio, PG, Spain, 1990
This is where things get interesting. While the Spanish prodigy is more than ready to migrate overseas, there are several question marks surrounding his draft status. First, will he leave his comfortable situation in Spain and risk playing in a Memphis market that hasn't been kind to former nationals Pau Gasol and Juan Carlos Navarro? If yes, will the Grizzlies front office select Ricky over Thabeet, who owner Michael Heisley prefers. For now, I'll pen in Rubio because of his amazing playmaking abilities. His basketball knowledge is off the charts and some scouts say he is eerily similar to Pistol Pete. You'd have to be out of your mind to pass this kid up.

3. Oklahoma City -- James Harden, SG, Arizona State, So.
Harden exploded onto the draft scene this season as he torched the nets all year long in Tempe. Don't let the dismal tournament performance fool you, this kid can flat out score. He's got great size to go along with his sweet jumper, although I'd love to see him be more aggressive taking the ball to the cup. Harden could slide nicely into the rotation in Oklahoma City and form a very solid backcourt with Russell Westbrook. And who better to show him the ropes than Kevin Durant.

4. Sacramento -- Jrue Holiday, PG, UCLA, Fr.
Call it a reach if you must, but Holiday is the real deal. Jrue wasn't able to showcase his abilities to the fullest playing in Ben Howland's system, not to mention Darren Collison returning wasn't exactly expected. Nonetheless, Holiday fits the mold in Sacramento, where the Kings are in dire need of a point guard. His defensive tenacity is incredible and he's got one of the best motors in the draft. Combine that with his strength, exceptional floor general skills and long 6-foot-8 wingspan, and you've got all the makings of a very special player.

5. Washington -- Hasheem Thabeet, C, Connecticut, Jr.
Rumor has it the Wiz are exploring options to trade up for Thabeet after Javale McGee didn't pan out this past season. However, there's a slight possiblity that the 7-foot-3 Tanzanian could fall right into their laps. Trust me, I'm well aware of his height, shot-altering capability and ability to block shots into next week, but after watching him get pushed around by Michigan State in the Final Four, I saw nothing but red flags. I'm still skeptical of his strength and defensive positioning in the paint. He's a sure-fire top five pick, but I've got him at the back end because he's very, very raw -- and his offensive artillery is a joke.

6. Minnesota -- Tyreke Evans, PG/SG, Memphis, Fr.
Simply put, Evans is a proven winner and he wants the ball in his hands with the game on the line. That's saying a lot for a 19-year-old that played in such a high-tempo offense at Memphis. He cemented himself throughout March Madness as the best freshman in all of college basketball with an amazing 33-point performance against Missouri. His ability to drive the lane and attack the basket is hard to overlook, and he's a great ball handler with an explosive first step. The sky is the limit for the Aston, Pa., native.

7. Golden State -- Brandon Jennings, PG, Italy, 1989
Unfortunately, college basketball fans didn't get to witness how talented the American exile was this past season as he opted to skip college and bring his game overseas. And while he had a slight falling out with Lottomatica Roma, it doesn't change his freakish speed and athleticism, not to mention his ability to create off the dribble and envision reads before they happen. Pair him with Monta Ellis and you have a dangerous backcourt for years to come.

8. New York -- Stephen Curry, PG, Davidson, Jr.
Not sure whether Knick fans are going to ring out cheers or boos, but it seems almost certain that Curry will be playing his home games at the Garden next season. He fits perfectly into Mike D'Antoni's run-and-gun offense and he's got the sweetest stroke in the draft. DeMar DeRozan would be a tremendous fit as well, but something tells me the star of the 2008 tourney is headed for the Big Apple.

9. Toronto -- Jordan Hill, PF, Arizona, Jr.
A lot of experts are penning Hill in the top five, although I've got him falling at the moment because the majority of teams before Toronto are looking to draft guards. He'd have the luxury of going up against Chris Bosh on a regular basis and could help shoulder the load shoud CB4 leave in the summer of 2010. Depending upon how well Hill works out (and where Thabeet is picked), he could definitely rise up the board when all is said and done.

10. Milwaukee -- Jonny Flynn, PG, Syracuse, So.
Flynn's stock has skyrocketed as of late as several GMs are impressed with his athleticism and explosiveness. As he displayed throughout the Big East and NCAA tournaments, Flynn is a great leader and an extremely strong player that pushes the ball relentlessly. And his vertical leap more than makes up for his lack of height. Should Ramon Sessions bolt for free agency, the Syracuse alum could easily pick up the slack and keep the Milwaukee train on track.

11. New Jersey -- DeJuan Blair, PF, Pittsburgh, So.
I can understand why GM Rod Thorn wants toughness at the 4. Watching a platoon of Ryan Anderson and Yi Jianlin at power forward would have me drooling at the mouth for a player of Blair's caliber. He's built like a tight end and possesses great hands to accompany his insane 7-foot-3 wingspan. While he might not have the height of the typical PF, there's nothing small about his play down in the paint.

12. Charlotte -- DeMar DeRozan, SG, USC, Fr.
Getting a player with DeRozan's skill set and potential at this point in the draft would be a no-brainer for the Bobcats. He might be the best athlete in the entire draft and his size has scouts and GMs shaking their heads. There are still a couple question marks with his game, but with the way he progressed throughout his freshman year at USC, I wouldn't be shocked if he was an All-Star in five years with how much talent he brings to the table.

13. Indiana -- Jeff Teague, PG, Wake Forest, So.
With the way his sophomore campaign ended against Cleveland State, I'd love to see Teague return to Winston-Salem for his junior season. If not, he's got the talent and potential to warrant a lottery selection, and as he showed in huge wins over North Carolina and Duke, he's a playmaking leader that can score at will. With Jarrett Jack's Pacers future in question, Teague would be a great replacement. When his ball handling abilities and decision making come full circle, he's going to be an absolute stud.

14. Phoenix -- Earl Clark, SF, Louisville, Jr.
The Suns would love to get their hands on Clark, as he was a tremendous asset all year long for Louisville. His natural versatility would work wonders in the Suns' fast-paced offensive attack. The athletic Clark plays long, he's a great distributor and he makes scoring look easy from 15 feet and in. God help defenders if he bulks up and develops a low-post arsenal.

15. Detroit -- Austin Daye, SF, Gonzaga, So.
While his best dayes are down the road, Detroit is re-stocking for the future and should have the patience to wait for a star like Daye to develop. He's still visibily frail, but that was the knock on Tayshaun Prince as well. The Irvine, Ca., product will never bang in the post with the power forwards, but if he packs on the pounds and hits the weight room, he'll be a dangerous weapon at the 3. Daye has all the tools to be a star; whether or not he's motivated to become one is the key.

16. Chicago -- Gerald Henderson, SG, Duke, Jr.
It was hard dropping Henderson this low because he's such a tough, talented player. Or maybe I'm just biased and would love to see him playing for the Bulls. Either way, he's extremely versatile and does everything very well. His biggest knock is that he's undersized, but hell, I'll take my chances on someone that has the testicular fortitude to hammer Psycho T in the nose.

17. Philadelphia -- Ty Lawson, PG, North Carolina, Jr.
Assuming the Sixers don't bring back Andre Miller, they'll be faced with the decision of taking Lawson or Eric Maynor. Many consider it a coin flip, although I point to this past NCAA Tournament as Lawson's breakout party. He was by far the biggest reason the Tar Heels won the national title as his quickness worked wonders on both ends of the floor. He's a great athlete with good court vision and his size concerns will go to the wayside if he learns how to change speeds.

18. Minnesota -- James Johnson, PF, Wake Forest, So.
Many feel Johnson has what it takes to crack the lottery seeing as how he's a unbelievable athlete with great size and build for the pros. However, as someone who's seen him play at least 10 times, his basketball IQ suffers compared to his competition. So many times this season Johnson thought he was a point guard in transition and either lost the handle or threw the ball away. That won't cut it in the league. He's still got the tools though, and a team like Minnesota should have no problem taking a flier on him.

19. Atlanta -- Eric Maynor, PG, Virginia Commonwealth, Sr.
With Acie Law not cutting it in Hotlanta, the Hawks are primed to select Maynor, who is one of the most NBA ready players in the draft. He's a seasoned veteran that excelled in the national spotlight against the likes of Duke and UCLA. He might not be as quick as Lawson, but he's better at attacking the basket. Combine that with his defensive repertoire, and you've got a well-rounded player that will get results.

20. Utah -- Tyler Hansbrough, PF, North Carolina, Sr.
Like most college seniors that enter the draft, Hansbrough has a limited upside as far as growth is concerned, but you can't discount his tenacious play in the paint on both sides of the floor. He's the type of gritty, hard-nosed player that could flourish under Jerry Sloan in Utah. T-Hans is an extremely hard worker that outhustles and outworks his competition. He's not the most talented player, but with a sweet mid-range jumper and the ability to get to the charity stripe and convert, he'd be a bargain at No. 20.

21. New Orleans -- Wayne Ellington, SG, North Carolina, Jr.
The Philadelphia native's hot hand from three-point land would undoubtedly give the Hornets another perimeter option off the dribble-drive for Chris Paul. Ellington was a shooting star throughout the NCAA Tournament and by working on his pull-up last offseason, he's more than just a catch-and-shoot player. His range mirrors that of Curry's and when he gets hot there's no cooling him off.

22. Dallas -- B.J. Mullens, C, Ohio State, Fr.
With Erick Dampier posting some of the lowest averages of his career this season, it might be time to invest in a center for the future. Mullens was a projected Top 5 pick at the beginning of the college season on potential alone, although he struggled often in Columbus. Still, that doesn't change the fact that he possess an unfair amount of size and athleticism. He's explosive above the rim and when he gets it all together, he'll definitely be a productive player.

23. Sacramento -- Gani Lawal, PF, Georgia Tech, So.
While there's still a strong possibility he withdraws from the draft and returns for his junior season, the Kings would love to scoop him up and let him develop along an already young frontcourt featuring Jason Thompson and Spencer Hawes. Lawal is long and athletic, and he's a very tough, physical player. He's still raw, but at this point, it's all about potential.

24. Portland -- Chase Budinger, SG, Arizona, Jr.
Trade rumors for Rudy Fernandez are heating up again and should Kevin Pritchard pull the trigger, Budinger has enough athleticism and explosiveness to fill the void. A former volleyball player, Chase is blessed with an insane vertical that allows him to crash the boards better than most of his matchup players. His jumpshot keeps getting better and better and he's not afraid to create his own looks.

25. Oklahoma City -- DaJuan Summers, SF, Georgetown, Jr.
Summers is a great athlete with loads of talent and potential. While he was the prototypical small forward in college, many believe he has the size and the know-how to develop a low post game. He's an above average shooter, but he needs to be more aggressive and attack the paint. At this point in the draft though, he's definitely worth the selection.

26. Chicago -- Terrence Williams, SF, Louisville, Sr.
One of the most flamboyant players in the draft, Williams is the definition of versatility. An extremely athletic point forward that explodes to the basket, T-Will has all the tools of a lottery pick although his decision making and tendency to disappear has scared teams away. However, in a less heralded role where he isn't expected to make all the big plays, Williams could flourish.

27. Memphis -- Sam Young, SF, Pittsburgh, Sr.
If Young had not just turned 24-years-old, we'd be locking him into the lottery. Scouts are questioning his upside (or lack thereof) despite his ability to score from inside and outside, and finish with the best of them above the rim. Young has come a long way on the defensive side of the ball as well and he could really find his niche playing with Rudy Gay and O.J. Mayo in Memphis.

28. Minnesota -- DeMarre Carroll, PF, Missouri, Sr.
A scrappy, hard-nosed player, Carroll made a name for himself this season leading Mizzou to the Elite Eight. He's a very strong player that loves to crash the boards. His stock is rising after a few great workouts, where I've heard his jumpshot has improved by leaps and bounds. Carroll is a little undersized for the 4, but his athleticism and energy could be vital off the bench for the Wolves.

29. Los Angeles -- Darren Collison, PG, UCLA, Sr.
Collison is a very interesting player as he was pegged as a potential lottery pick during his sophomore season in Westwood. Things didn't quite go as planned, but the senior guard is a fantastic all-around prospect at the point guard position. Derek Fisher is waning out the end of his career, and picking a incredibly quick court general like Collison with NBA range and great defensive length would be well worth the risk if Jordan Farmar isn't ready to handle the everyday duties.

30. Cleveland -- Derrick Brown, PF, Xavier, Jr.
Brown would bring explosiveness and athleticism to a frontcourt that definitely lacks a punch. Ilgauskas has never been known for his toughness and Varejao is nowhere to be found on the offensive end of the ball. Brown is a strong finisher around the circle and is adept at shooting the long ball (43 percent). He's a little bit of a tweener, but should he remain in the draft, it's worth the risk to give him a shot.

2009 NBA Playoffs (ECF, Games 1 and 2 Recap... Sorta)

First off, I am a Lakers fan (and Clippers fan, too, but they're not relevant at the moment). I think I've made that quite clear.

I've also made it quite clear that I was SICK of Cleveland being crowned by media and fans alike as the world champions. It's one thing to predict. It's another to make this a foregone conclusion. The championships are played in June. Because of this... as much as a Kobe/Lebron showdown is awesome... I am rooting for Orlando to win the East. I don't care if this is the worse match-up for L.A. should L.A. get to the Finals.

The talk of Cleveland being champions came to a screeching halt when Orlando 'upset' Cleveland in Game 1 by virtue of Rashard Lewis' three with 14 ticks left, 107-106. The non-existing coronation was stopped. We got a series. Oh, my gosh. Basically, Cleveland got off to a fast start... and then they started standing around in the 2nd half. LeBron James had a remarkable game (49 points) but got tired towards the end... and Orlando took advantage. Trailing as much as 16, Orlando just kept plugging away until that aforementioned Rashard Lewis 3.

Cleveland had a 23-point lead at one point in Game 2. But Orlando managed to keep the lead down to around 10 or 12 in the 2nd quarter... so I knew that Orlando would be dangerous like this. Sure enough, they deadlocked it in the 4th... and was poised to win the game after Hedo Turkoglu made a shot to take the lead with 1 tick left.

Then LeBron happened. A shot that I'm sure that will be replayed for years... LeBron made a 3-pointer straightaway to win the game for Cleveland, 96-95.

Photo by bigkingsfan... from the InsideHoops.Com forums.

When LeBron James made that shot, I gave Cleveland a big F U. I really wished Orlando came away with the win here (even though I predicted that Cleveland would win this series in six).

I personally like the Cavs. I like the way that they're so loose on the sideline. And I have nothing against LeBron James. He could be the greatest player of all-time. But it's amazing how he's getting so much help from the refs. This game was borderline unwatchable because of the calls the Cavs were getting (including a surely missed technical on Mo Williams early in the game for throwing the ball at Dwight Howard). That's why we were shocked when LeBron actually got caught for a travel and two offensive fouls.

Now I'm going to be all over the place because of my 'hatred' for the Cavs. I just want it to be a fair game. If Turkoglu played better defense, LeBron would be seriously going to the line. But give LeBron credit here; he made a great shot.

GAME 1: Orlando 107 @ Cleveland 106
GAME 2: Orlando 95 @ Cleveland 96

Let's not get it twisted, though. Orlando's been resilient this postseason. They survived a scare from Philadelphia, they survived Big Baby's game-winner on their home court, and they came away unscathed from Boston with that Game 7 road win. That shot didn't change the series, per se; that shot just "saved Cleveland's season" (and, please, let's not rank this shot just yet... Cleveland may still lose this series; one person had the NERVE to say this shot was better than Michael Jordan's championship-winning shot at Utah in '98... ARE YOU SMOKING CRACK?!). I still feel Orlando's got some kind of momentum going home to Amway Arena.

Still, it was a GREAT SHOT by LeBron. There's not much more you can say. Definitely a great moment in NBA Playoff history.

At least, I won't hear any more crowning of the Cavs here. Keep this series competitive, Orlando.

And as a basketball fan, you gotta love this series.

Follow me on Twitter. I am on there as @TheNoLookPass. And I really don't hate Cleveland. Nope. I don't.
