            <title>Big NBA News: Feat. Josh Childress (Iverson Going for Memphis?)</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<div style="TEXT-ALIGN: left">Hello, and welcome to another edition of Big NBA News. We got some good stuff in for us today so let's go. These are some pretty big rumors and I really do think these are the ones you definitely don't want to miss!</div>
<div style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN-RIGHT: 5px"><a href="http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=\mike bibby&amp;iid=4790211" target="_blank"><img border="0" alt="NBA: MAY 09 Eastern Conference Semifinals - Cavaliers at Hawks - Game 3" src="http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/8/3/5/8/NBA_MAY_09_7341.JPG?adImageId=1784484&amp;imageId=4790211" width="234" height="334" /></a></div>
<p><strong>Mike Bibby</strong></p>
<p>Atlanta Hawks point guard was given some rumors that he may go to Philadelphia to play for the Sixers.</p>
<p>But Sixers fans, you might want to stop cheering and put your hands down. The Sixers aren't interested in Bibby, <a href="http://www.philly.com/inquirer/sports/20090703_76ers__interest_in_Mike_Bibby_not_mutual.html">according to the Inquirer</a>.</p>
<p>But heck, it would be real nice for Philly to get him. But as for right now, he's chilling in Atlanta.</p>
<p>He is also looking to bring the Hawks to the playoffs again and hopefully passing the second round and not getting killed by the Cleveland Cavaliers.</p>
<p>My bad, Atlanta. Sorry for bringing back bad memories.</p>
<div style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN-LEFT: 5px"><a href="http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=\ricky rubio&amp;iid=928864" target="_blank"><img border="0" alt="Olympics Day 12 - Basketball" src="http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/7/3/e/7/Olympics_Day_12_f147.jpg?adImageId=1784542&amp;imageId=928864" width="234" height="161" /></a></div>
<p><strong>Ricky Rubio</strong></p>
<p>Jeez Ricky!</p>
<p>I really don't understand what's the point of him&nbsp;coming to the NBA after <a href="http://www.twincities.com/sports/ci_12741576?source=rss&amp;nclick_check=1">reading this about him going back to Spain</a>to play proffessionaly for two more years!</p>
<p>But it won't matter because if he wants to return to the NBA, <a href="http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-42-5/Ricky-Rubio-s-Nuclear-Option.html">the Timberwolves still hold the rights to him</a>. So Ricky, it really doesn't matter if you don't want to play for Minny, just try to make the best of it, okay?</p>
<p>Nah, he won't.</p>
<div style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN-RIGHT: 5px"><a href="http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=\hedo turkoglu&amp;iid=4842356" target="_blank"><img border="0" alt="Magic-Celtics" src="http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/a/2/1/e/MagicCeltics_95c6.JPG?adImageId=1784604&amp;imageId=4842356" width="234" height="309" /></a></div>
<p><strong>Hedo Turkoglu</strong></p>
<p>Hedo Turkoglu, he recently opted out of his contract with the Orlando Magic, shouldn't be really happy right now.</p>
<p>The Toronto Raptors were about to give him a $60M contract but they decided not to, <a href="http://www.thestar.com/sports/article/659530">according to The Star.</a></p>
<p>We'll see what happens, maybe Toronto be decide to again. And teams going for a bid?</p>
<p>As of right now, not many. Sorry, Hedo. Want to go back to Orlando? Nah, I really think he doesn't. Let him wait, he'll get the deal and the team he wants.</p>
<div style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN-LEFT: 5px"><a href="http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=\mikkie moore&amp;iid=2841377" target="_blank"><img border="0" alt="NBA Kings vs. Pistons NOV 11" src="http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/e/1/f/d/e4.JPG?adImageId=1784655&amp;imageId=2841377" width="234" height="334" /></a></div>
<p><strong>New Orleans Hornets</strong></p>
<p><a href="http://blog.nola.com/hornetsbeat/2009/07/new_orleans_hornets_looking_to_1.html">The Times-Picayune reports that</a>&nbsp;the New Orleans Hornets are deciding to acquire the following free agents:</p>
<ul>
<li>Mikki Moore (right)</li>
<li>Maceo Boston</li>
<li>Jake Voskuhl</li></ul>
<p>ESPN.com reports that the Hornets are also taking a look at former-Hornet, Brandon Bass.</p>
<p>Let's see who they pick because all of the players look interesting to me. Moore might fit well.</p>
<p>I don't know who to pick, it'll be a tough decision. But hey, why not , sign them all. But nah, it'll probably be a not-so-smart idea.</p>
<div style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN-RIGHT: 5px"><a href="http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=\josh childress&amp;iid=4698581" target="_blank"><img border="0" alt="Euroleague Basketball Final Four - Olympiacos Piraeus v Panathinaikos Athen" src="http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/3/9/9/4/Euroleague_Basketball_Final_7f54.jpg?adImageId=1784736&amp;imageId=4698581" width="240" height="145" /></a></div>
<p><strong>Josh Childress</strong></p>
<p>The Journal Times reports that the Milwaukee Bucks are trying out Josh Childress, who the last NBA team he played with was the Atlanta Hawks after moving to the Olympioacos.</p>
<p>Childress has been called by many NBA teams, and he does look like he can fit nicely with the team after that trade that sent Richard Jefferson to the San Antonio Spurs.</p>
<div style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><a href="http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=\allen iverson&amp;iid=4112091" target="_blank"><img border="0" alt="NBA: FEB 25 Pistons at Hornets" src="http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/2/3/4/c/PicImg_NBA_FEB_25_32fb.JPG?adImageId=1786332&amp;imageId=4112091" width="420" height="598" /></a></div>
<div style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><a href="http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=\allen iverson&amp;iid=4112091" target="_blank"></a></div>
<p>Here is the biggest news of the day! Now that I have made a new website called MemphisBlueBears.com, a site about the Memphis Grizzlies (I am a bigger Indiana Pacers fan, though, of course), I know have to write some Grizzlies news.</p>
<p>Well, Allen Iverson announced that he wanted to play for the Memphis Grizzlies, ESPN reports. Here's what Iverson <a href="http://twitter.com/allenIverson">said on his Twitter</a>:</p>
<blockquote>
<p><strong>"I'm a free agent, healthy again, and capable of signing with any team. My only preference will be [is] to play for a coach that knows what I bring to the table and that I am going to bring it every night! Someone who best knows how to utilize my skills to make our team the very best it can be. For those of you who thought I was done, think again."</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>Whew, A.I. had a lot to say there to all of his fans on Twitter (more than 16,000 to be exact, dang!). Let's see how everything turns out.</p>
<p>He looks good with the Grizzlies&nbsp;as a new "Big Three" may approach with him, Rudy Gay, and O.J. Mayo. Now that would be nice. We'll see how it turns out, as of right now, Iverson is probably chilling (and why wouldn't he?).</p>]]></description>

            <title>Yup, Danny Ainge is a Genius</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Danny Ainge.jpg" src="http://mvn.com/celtics17/Danny%20Ainge.jpg" class="mt-image-none" style="" width="372" height="500" /></span><br /><br /><a href="http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/extras/celtics_blog/2009/07/marbury_believe_1.html">Marbury feels (short) Celtics days are done</a>.<br /><br /><a href="http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/chris_mannix/07/02/Celtics.Wallace/">Bill Strickland, Sheed's agent, on the contract offer</a>.<br /><br />I used to hate -- no, DESPISE -- Danny Ainge. After his deal which sent the then-admirable Antonie Walker packing, to then only sign Brian Scalabrine, it was clear to me that this guy was just not a fit for the Celtics.<br /><br />Then came the 2006-07 season, a year where the Celtics not only had shameful results, but left a humiliating mark on both their legendary name and Boston's fans. <br /><br />And just when I thought both Danny Ainge and Doc Rivers were "outta here," a meeting was arranged between Celtics star Paul Pierce, and Danny Ainge himself. Pierce told Ainge that "he wanted to be a Celtic for life," but if the C's didn't find veteran help for him that offseason, he'd prefer leaving Beantown and heading to a contender.<br /><br />Little did he know that Mr. Ainge expected a Pierce response like that, and was working on bring that "contender team" to Boston. So, not only did Pierce get veteran help, but two superstars ready to take a big burden off of Pierce's shoulder.<br /><br />In the glorious end, Paul Pierce, the Celtics, and the city of Boston won a championship, an honor they'd already experienced many times over, but still had that same thirst for victory nonetheless.<br /><br />And so I'm convinced. Danny Ainge is a genius. The Ray Allen trade which was seen as a terrible, awful move, was proved brilliant by Ainge after Allen was covered in champagne at around midnight, June 17, 2008. He gave the T-Wolves half of the Celtics' roster in exchange for Kevin Garnett, but once again, the swap proved to be what was necessary for both Boston and Minnesota. Then, he added player after player on to the Celtic gang just days after the Garnett trade, not stopping until the roster was perfectly complete.<br /><br />The C's signed Eddie House and Scot Pollard shortly after the Garnett trade was finalized. Late August, he signed coveted free agent James Posey to a one-year deal. The moves were seen as complements to the blockbuster deals which ended up being the splashes of the Summer, but little did we know these were the deals that would give Boston a title.<br /><br />After the jump, I'll talk about the specifics and go into detail about the 2007-08 Executive of the Year.<br /> <div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>]]></description>

            <title>Cavaliers Hot For Ron Artest, Trevor Ariza</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<p><object width="440" height="361"><param name="movie" value="http://espn.go.com/videohub/player.swf?mediaId=4302328" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><embed src="http://espn.go.com/videohub/player.swf?mediaId=4302328" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" allowscriptaccess="always" width="440" height="361"></object></p>

<p><p>So the previously unsubstantiated speculation regarding the Cavs as a possible destination for unrestricted free agent swingman Ron Artest were not so far off, after all.<br /><br />It's definitely not a done deal, by any stretch, but Artest may have emerged as the no. 1 target for Cavaliers GM Danny Ferry as free agency opened its doors on Wednesday morning. <a href="http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2009/07/a_curious_courtship_ron_artest.html">From the Plain Dealer's Brian Windhorst:</a><br /><br /></p><blockquote><p><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>According to several league sources, the Cavs have been in contact with Houston Rockets free agent forward Ron Artest. It even included a face-to-face pitch from LeBron James<a href="http://www.nba.com/playerfile/lebron_james/index.html"> </a>Tuesday night in Los Angeles as both were in Southern California for various events. </b></font></p><p><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>Artest, who is an unrestricted free agent after a contract that paid
him $7.4 million with the Rockets expired, is being courted by several
teams. Artest is believed to prefer to play for a championship
contender. In addition to the Rockets, the Cavs may be getting
competition from the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers for his
services. </b></font></p><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>With the Rockets facing the uncertain injury status of stars Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady, it is unclear how hard they will try to push to re-sign Artest. They are pursuing Orlando Magic free agent center Marcin Gortat.</b></font><br /></blockquote></p>

<p><p></p><p></p><p>If the market is not there for Artest, he can definitely use the Cavs to have another career year on a team that will be on national TV all the time. He could also get infinite exposure for his game if the Cavs make another deep playoff run and even win their first-ever championship next spring.<br /><br />But Artest isn't the only lockdown swingman defender that Ferry is pursuing.<br /><br /><a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4301414">From ESPN.com's Chris Broussard:</a><br /><br /></p><blockquote><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>With at least five teams pursuing Ariza, the Lakers are currently
unwilling to pay him more than the $5.6 million mid-level exception.</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>"They're letting him go," one of the sources said.</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>Cleveland is making a hard push for Ariza, and the Cavaliers' coaching
staff was speaking with him on Wednesday. While Cleveland can only
offer the mid-level as well, Ariza's disappointment with the Lakers'
stance has moved other suitors ahead of his current team.</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>The Rockets, Clippers, Raptors and Blazers are also showing interest in
Ariza. Portland and Toronto could each offer more than the mid-level
exception.</b></font><br /></blockquote><br />Finally. Two players that have been on my radar as perfect fits for the Cavs have finally emerged as the two players that Ferry wants the most. Not a "stretch big" like Charlie Villanueva or Rasheed Wallace. But Ron Artest and Trevor Ariza. <br /><br />And with Orlando looking likely to lose Hedo Turkoglu to the Western Conference's Blazers pretty soon, the Magic's mismatch problems will be a thing of the past. But if they do resurface, a guy like Artest or Ariza is the perfect panacea for a team that really doesn't need many more parts to become an NBA champion.<br /><br />At 24, Ariza would definitely be a long-term solution on the wing in Cleveland. Some sources on Tuesday night even speculated that the Cavs are in the hunt for a wing player who can slide LeBron to the power forward spot next season, and the 6'8" Ariza -- a small forward by trade -- fits the bill. <br /><br />He can even play some shooting guard, and he's definitely quick enough to cover other two's. Regardless, he makes the Cavs deeper, better on the perimeter on both ends, and a little bit more athletic. Add him with other young pieces like Delonte West, Mo Williams, and a hopefully re-signed Anderson Varejao, and you're finally talking about Ferry building a nice core around LeBron.<br /><br />Something tells me Thursday's going to be a big day. Stay tuned.</p>

            <title>Sifting Through Rumors</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<i>After just an hour of posting a rumor entry, we once again have some rumors to discuss. Brace with me, because this one will include a bit of rambling from the ol' Celticsfanatic.<br /><br /><a href="http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=Ben%20Gordon%20Charlie%20Villanueva&amp;iid=2112635" target="_blank"><img src="http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/8/d/3/4/UCONN_v_North_a0f4.jpg?adImageId=1770389&amp;imageId=2112635" alt="UCONN v North Carolina" border="0" width="500" height="446" /></a><script type="text/javascript" src="http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js"></script><br /><br /></i><div align="center"><i><b>Could the two Huskies be reunited?</b></i><br /></div><br /><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-gordonvillanueva070109&amp;prov=yhoo&amp;type=lgns">Yahoo! reporting Gordon, Villanueva, may be Pistons soon</a> (once again, hat tip to <a href="http://www.celticsblog.com/2009/7/1/933228/gordon-villanueva-may-be-pistons">CelticsBlog</a>):<br /><b><br /></b><blockquote><b><a href="http://www.sbnation.com/nba/teams/CHI" class="sbn-auto-link">Chicago Bulls</a> guard <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/21810/Ben_Gordon" class="sbn-auto-link">Ben Gordon</a> and <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/nba/teams/MIL" class="sbn-auto-link">Milwaukee Bucks</a> forward <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/21678/Charlie_Villanueva" class="sbn-auto-link">Charlie Villanueva</a>
flew to Detroit on Wednesday morning for a mid-day meeting with team
president Joe Dumars and indications are both are moving rapidly toward
deals with the <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/nba/teams/DET" class="sbn-auto-link">Detroit Pistons</a>, league and sources close to the two players told Yahoo! Sports.</b><br /><br /><b>Gordon and Villanueva, both unrestricted free agents, would be significant strikes on the first full day of NBA free agency.</b><br /><br /><b>Gordon
and Villanueva have history together, and are good friends. They played
for the University of Connecticut, although never together. The Pistons
have nearly $20 million in salary-cap space and it's thought that the
offers to these two</b> <b>players would come close to expending that money.</b><br /></blockquote><br />I've said it once, I'll say it again: The Pistons will be an entirely different team next year. <script type="text/javascript" src="http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js"></script>Joe Dumars will not settle for anything less than destruction of this Detroit squad. Although this may not involve trades at first, believe me when I say that he will try to move guys like Hamilton if he signed Gordon, and would most certainly not re-sign Rasheed Wallace if he managed to snag Villanueva.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2009/07/blazers-want-hedo-turkoglu/">Hedo heavily targeted by Portland</a>:<br /><br /><blockquote><b>"The Trail Blazers' summer agenda was revealed late Tuesday night at
the minute the free agent market opened. That's when general manager
Kevin Pritchard and assistant general manager Tom Penn called agent Lon
Babby to begin the courtship of small forward Hedo Turkoglu. `Kevin
Pritchard and Tom Penn called me at the earliest possible moment and
expressed enthusiasm for engaging in discussions about Hedo becoming a
Trail Blazer,` Babby said late Tuesday night. `We have begun that
process.`"</b><br /></blockquote> <div><br />Apparently Hedo's value has gone up significantly since the Vince Carter trade. It seems that the Magic will not try to retain Turkoglu after acquiring Vinsanity from the Nets, most likely filling out their roster with solid bench players. Carter and Mickael Pietrus will probably be Orlando's starting shooting guard and small forward, although the specific position they'll play has not yet been determined in my eyes.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/extras/celtics_blog/2009/07/hudson_has_a_sh.html">Danny Ainge comments on Lester Hudson</a>.<br /><br /><blockquote><b>"Lester is probably known for being a scorer in college basketball," <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/nba/teams/BOS" class="sbn-auto-link">Celtics</a>
president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said. "But we see Lester
as a much greater player than that. He's one of the best defensive
players in college on the perimeter, he averages eight rebounds per
game as a point guard. He's a tough kid."</b><br /></blockquote><br />Here's a Memphian friend of mine on Hudson:<br /><br /><blockquote><p><b>Lester has had SEVERE grade problems, because at a ridiculously
young age (11, 12) he was a playground legend in Memphis and he never
had to work for anything. He grew up in a rough neighborhood and had
plenty of opportunities to go astray; fortunately, basketball was his
way out. His life is one helluva soap opera, I hope I have time in the
next couple weeks to do a write-up.</b></p><p><b>He had HUGE grade problems everywhere he went, and had some other
skirts with trouble, too. He finally got his head together, but his
transcript was so screwed up, no major college would touch him, not
even Memphis (who did recruit him lightly after his juco career).</b></p><p><b>Lester is the best prospect you've never seen and/or barely heard
of. He could really be something special some day, if he keeps his head
straight.</b><br /></p></blockquote><p>Hudson has been quite a scorer all of his life, and like Danny said, he can play some great D. Both Ainge and my friend implied that Lester is a tough kid, and he shows on the basketball court. Eight rpg as a PG? I'll take that anyday.<br /></p>

            <description><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana"><i>Welcome to Talking To Chicks Who Love Hoops. We all know female sports fans are a hot commodity for us dudes. Maybe not as rare as we think but us guys always think they're inferior when it comes to sports knowledge. Well, in this feature, I talk to them about the NBA and check what goes through their heads. And I ask them about everything else in an attempt to make this more fun and versatile instead of just straight sports. And watch out; these chicks might know more than you guys. Hell, they might even know more than yours truly.</i></p>

<p>I wonder if it gets embedded in you when you're already at the game while you're not even born. That seems to be the case for the talented and beautiful <b>Stephanie K</b>. Stephanie K is not only a huge fan of the NBA but also an aspiring singer. We talked about the NBA, her beloved <b>Detroit Pistons</b>, and a bit about her singing as well. I guess she didn't take me seriously when I offered to do a duet! Dammit.</p>

<p>And right before I was going to put up this entry, we got breaking news that <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4297296"><b>Michael Curry</b></a> was fired as head coach of her beloved Pistons. So at the very last minute, I got Stephanie's reaction on that as well.</p>

<p><img src="http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b131/r2estyle/NLP/stephaniek002.jpg"></p>

<p>Yeah, my font is in purple... and her font is in blue.</p>

<p><i><font color="purple">Dear Stephanie, </font></p>

<p><font color="purple">It's my fault for not E-Mailing you sooner about this but I'll admit that it's been a pretty awesome NBA week. I was stoked that the Lakers won the title, yes, but, man, I can't wait for the title defense.</font></p>

<p><font color="purple">Anyway, I know you root for them Pistons. And I know from your site that you're a huge Chauncey Billups fan. So do you now also root for the Denver Nuggets? They had one hell of a playoff run and I don't see any reason why they can't do this again next year. </font></p>

<p><font color="purple">So have you lived in Michigan all your life? And I take it you grew up watching the Pistons? Tell me how you got into it and tell me your huge NBA fandom. Because you told me on Twitter that you are like... the biggest fan ever. And your boys beat the Lakers in '04. Is that your favorite NBA moment ever?</font></p>

<p><font color="purple">Also... I'd like to get your thoughts on all the trades that have gone down... and how do you think the Pistons are going to do next season. Give me some of that NBA knowledge, girlfriend!</font></p>

<p><font color="purple">By the way, you are an outstanding singer. I saw the vid where you sang the national anthem at The Palace of Auburn Hills. I hope you continue to go places with your voice. I love your song, It's You. Maybe you can write me a song sometime. Or maybe we can do a duet together! Yeah!</font></p>

<p><font color="purple">See? I pay attention!</font></p>

<p><font color="purple">Rey-Rey</font></i></p>

<p><b>I'll make love to you! Like you want me to...</b></p>

<p>...uhhh, okay. Moving on to her reply...</p>

<p><i><font color="blue">To start, I'm not ashamed to admit that I have gotten into many intense verbal battles over the years defending my beloved Pistons in bars, sports books, arenas, etc. Bad, great, terrible (see: the teal colors era), they will always be my favorite team. I'm a hometown girl and have been attending games (front row season tickets) since I resided in my mother's womb. And that's not a joke...</font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">This year was a tough one to swallow. After 6 straight conference finals appearances, a first round sweeping was absolutely devastating. Chauncey Billups, our captain, leader and MVP during our championship (and then some), has been MY MVP since his days at Colorado. I was thrilled to see him drafted 3rd back in '97, and always knew he would develop into the incredible player he has become today. On and off the court, he is a class act. I am so proud of him and what he has accomplished in just one season with the Denver Nuggets. It truly shows how one player can so greatly impact a team. They are only going to get better in the years to come. Allen Iverson on the other hand? Ugh...selfish, difficult and egotistical are not adjectives I look for in describing an NBA allstar. Despite his individual accomplishments, he has no reason to be so conceited. ONE trip to the finals...ONE game won...does not a champion make.</font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">Although I was alive and present during the Bad Boy era, I was too young to fully appreciate the excitement. My favorite Pistons moment was just before the championship-clinching Game 5 of the 2004 NBA finals...I remember Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight" blaring throughout the Palace in the dim lighting before our team took the court. I turned to my brother, another Pistons fanatic and said, "We're doing this tonight." And we did. I got to go on the court during the ceremony. Unforgettable.</font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">Fast forwarding to present times, I am not happy with the Pistons 1st Round pick in the 2009 draft. Austin Daye is pretty much Tayshaun Prince #2. Despite the fact that GM Joe Dumars is happy with PG Rodney Stuckey and SG and Rip Hamilton running the backcourt, I am a firm believer that the best available player should be chosen upon your turn in the draft. Hell, even if you don't want them...package them in some kind of deal. Drue Holiday and Ty Lawson could have been used as some intense bait. Picks in Round 2 are always hit or miss...so I won't even touch on those. But a swedish bleached blonde dude with the 39th pick? I just don't know...and after Joe D's many draft busts (Darko Milicic, Amir Johnson, Rodney White, Walter Sharpe)...I have my doubts.</font></p>

<p><img src="http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b131/r2estyle/NLP/stuckey001.jpg"><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">It was a pretty boring draft in my opinion. Everyone knew Blake was going #1. Ricky Rubio could be a Pistol Pete in the making. But you never can tell...</font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">Despite the draft, the major buzz around the NBA is currently the trade of Shaq to the Cavs in exchange for Sasha Pavlovic, Ben Wallace, cash and a future pick. Just 11 days after Kobe proved he had the talent and leadership skills to win a championship without Shaq manning the front court, LeBron and the Cavs have done just the opposite...hoping Shaq will be the missing piece of their championship puzzle...as he was for Dwyane Wade in 2006. However, at 37 years old, Shaq's mobility, motivation and agility have all diminished greatly. He was not the answer for the Suns. It will be interesting to see if he can make a difference for the Cavs, who were manhandled by the Magic in the ECF.</font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">Moreover, the trade of Vince Carter to the Orlando Magic is also intriguing. If Vince is willing to take a backseat and let the young Dwight Howard remain the leader of the team, the Magic could be even MORE dangerous this upcoming season. With a healthy Vinsanity, his explosive scoring could help them over the final hump to gloryland. </font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">AND I HAVE A QUESTION...what happened to Jermaine O'Neal?!</font></i></p>

<p>I took that as a regular question. I normally pick up on those rhetorical ones, too. Dammit.</p>

<p><i><font color="purple">I know Jermaine O'Neal picked up his player option to return to Miami for about $23 million. It's really too bad that he keeps getting hurt. </font></p>

<p><font color="purple">Yeah, I keep looking back at the 2004 NBA Finals and thought it was one of the biggest upsets ever. At least, on paper. But that finals loss really broke the Lakers that time. It caused a domino effect within L.A. but, hey, it didn't take THAT long for them to get back, did it?</font></p>

<p><font color="purple">I know it's too early to say... but who would you pencil in right now for next season's Finals? Lakers/Cavs? Spurs/Celtics? Nuggets/Pistons? Ha ha.</font></p>

<p><font color="purple">Also... which trade you think will make the most impact? I think Orlando wins if they get Turkoglu back... but I highly doubt it at this point. Everyone's getting paid big in Orlando. I don't think Cleveland got that much better... and the Spurs look scary yet again by adding Richard Jefferson.</font></p>

<p><font color="purple">And where do you see Detroit going next year? Are they going to sign a huge free agent, ya think?</font> </p>

<p><font color="purple">Let's end it with a personal question: how was it performing the National Anthem in front of the Palace crowd? </font></p>

<p><font color="purple">Good luck on your singing career!</font></p>

<p><font color="purple">Rey-Rey</font></i></p>

<p>Someday, I would love for L.A. to get revenge on Detroit. Detroit's beaten L.A. in their last two Finals meetings.</p>

<p><i><font color="blue">You KNOW I DID.  I may be small, but I'm might strong...and fast..and I'm a kickboxer ;)</font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">I guess the Jermaine O'Neal question was a rhetorical one...he has just been mighty off the radar for the salary that he is gettng.</font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">I was really surprised to hear that the Celtics are shopping Rajon Rondo. It seems that with a healthy Kevin Garnett, they could've made another deep run in the playoffs. Rondo must be developing one hell of an ego if they wish to dismantle such a talented core so quickly.</font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">As I said in my last email, I don't think the Shaq trade will improve the Cavs. It didn't work for the Suns...and Shaq is only going to get older, slower and less motivated in the coming months. </font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">Darko to the Knicks? HA...they are asking for it...that's like throwing a kid in a candy store. It's not a secret that the guy loves to party...and "The City That Never Sleeps" will only fuel his late night shenanigans.</font> <br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">I will be sad to see Rip leave Detroit. With Rasheed undoubtedly off the books this year, he is one of the last remaining members of the 2004 championship. Oh how time flies...</font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">However, if the Pistons do look to move Rip, I hope that they can land Ben Gordon on the free agency market. The former UConn Husky is not only a great scorer...he's a great SHOOTER as well...a rare combination nowadays. And, as we all learned in the Bulls outstanding playoff series against the Celtics this April, he is reliable and dependable in crunch time. With the absence of Sheed, the Pistons will need a strong presence on the inside...capable of scoring and defending. Boozer is an option...but he has had his problems with injuries. Only time will tell...but I hope they can spend this money wisely...otherwise the trade of Chauncey Billups was even MORE of a disaster than we could have ever imagined.</font></p>

<p><img src="http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b131/r2estyle/NLP/billupsmvp.jpg"><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">2010 Finals...well, wishful thinking is ALWAYS that the Pistons will be there. However, it looks likes we are in the midst of somewhat of a rebuilding phase. I look to see the Lakers defending their championship if they can hold onto Trevor Ariza (who could demand a hefty contract after his impressive contributions these past playoffs) and Lamar Odom. In the East...Orlando can make it back even if they don't manage to resign Hedo IF Vince Carter fills in his shoes. The Cavs are always dangerous because LeBron could defeat most teams even if he had to play against them 5 on 1. A healthy Celtics team could make it back to the finals...especially if Glen "Big Baby" Davis keeps hitting games winners...and he lays off the ice cream and keeps his weight below 540 lbs.</font><br />
 <br />
<font color="blue">I get to sing the anthem for the Pistons at least once a month during the season at the Palace. It is one of my places to perform...getting to combine singing with basketball?! What more could I ask for?! Heaven on earth...</font></i></p>

<p>And one last thing...</p>

<p><i><font color="purple">Michael Curry just got canned by the Pistons. I wanna get your reaction to that, please.</font></i></p>

<p><i><font color="blue">Well...I was never really too thrilled to have Michael Curry taking over the head coaching position for the Pistons. He did, after all, have just one year of assistant coaching under his belt. He was biting off more than he could chew...before he entered the picture, the Pistons had been to the ECF 6 years in a row and were always considered a force to be reckoned with in the East. He had to have assumed that anything less than a conference finals appearance would have been deemed a failure. And in the world of professional sports, the coach is often the first to be blamed. As the former head of the Players' Association, he was always a well respected player as well as a supportive teammate. Still, I don't know that the players looked at him as an authority figure...it's hard to listen to a guy whom you used to call your friend order you around. After hearing rumors of dissention between Rip Hamilton and Michael Curry, I wonder if this is somewhat of a move on Joe Dumars' behalf to placate the very publicly unhappy Hamilton. Is Rip not on the trading block after all? Only time will tell...</font></i></p>

<p>I mentioned a few months ago in our podcast that Curry seemed to have lost his team midway through the season. And I guess I was correct. Wonder who Detroit's going to hire now?</p>

<p>Anyway, it was a BLAST talking to Stephanie about her Pistons and the rest of the league. And we also talked about her singing career in a bit. Check out her web site at <a href="http://www.stephaniekmusic.com"><b>www.stephaniekmusic.com</b></a>. And to preview her music, go check out her <b><a href="http://myspace.com/stephaniekmusic">MySpace</a></b>! Her first national album, <b>Good Intentions</b>, is due for release this fall under a division of <b>Universal Records</b>. This woman is very talented. Support her music! Especially if you're a fellow Detroit Pistons fan! I'd like to thank Stephanie for her participation in this feature.</p>

            <title>Free Agent Profile: Marcin Gortat</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<div><i>From today through the start of the free agent signing period on Wednesday, Project Spurs will profile free agents on our wishlists.</i></div><div><br /></div><div>Even with the recent draft of DeJuan Blair, the Spurs could still use some help in the paint with Kurt Thomas and Fabricio Oberto traded away last week.</div><div><br /></div><div>Blair will help beef up our bench, but the Spurs still need a starting center to play next to Tim Duncan.</div><div><br /></div><div>Marcin Gortat, a backup center with the Orlando Magic, could certainly fit that bill. While his numbers are far from impressive, he also averaged just 12 minutes a game last season.</div><div><br /></div><div>But when he started for Dwight Howard on December 15 at Golden State, he made the most of it, with 16 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks. But that wasn't the only time Gortat had a double-double. His points, rebounds and blocks increase considerably as his playing time increases.</div><div><br /></div><div>When he gets 40 plus minutes, which happened twice this season, his stats are very impressive. In a loss to Milwaukee in April, the 6-11 Gortat played 43 minutes and finished with 10 points and 18 rebounds.</div><div><br /></div><div>For a team that has four 20+ scorers and needs rebounding help, Gortat seems like a perfect fit, and if you have any questions about whether or not he can start, just ask Magic GM Otis Smith.</div><div><br /></div><div>"He goes out and does his job and probably has the best work ethic of anyone in the locker room," Smith said. &nbsp;"Can he start for another team? Yeah he can."</div><div><br /></div><div>Of all of the available free agent bigs, Gortat is probably my favorite. He's aggressive on offense, defensive-minded, has a great work ethic, and at 25, he still has plenty of time to grow into the intimidating presence we want blocking shots in the post. And how could you not like &nbsp;a guy nicknamed the Polish Hammer.</div><div><br /></div><div>Gortat only made $711,000 for the Magic last season, and while I would value him at about $3 million per year, he'll likely command the mid-level exception.</div><div><br /></div><div>Since he's a restricted free agent, Orlando will have the opportunity to match, but after taking on Vince Carter's contract, there's not much of a chance chance that they will offer that much for a backup to Dwight Howard when any veteran big can relieve Howard for 12 minutes a game.</div><div><br /></div><div>There was a <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&amp;prev=_t&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fsport.wp.pl%2Fkat%2C1809%2Ctitle%2CGortat-za-drogi-dla-San-Antonio%2Cwid%2C11252607%2Cwiadomosc.html&amp;sl=pl&amp;tl=en&amp;history_state0=">report</a> last week that the Spurs are considering spending the $5.5 million exception on either Gortat, Zaza Pachulia, Drew Gooden, Rasheed Wallace or Tiago Splitter.</div><div><br /></div><div>If they can get Rasheed Wallace to go for the MLE, then that's probably the best move. After that, it would be a three-horse race between Gortat, Pachulia and Gooden for my money. There's also a chance that New York, who reportedly wants Gortat badly, will overpay him to outbid the Spurs or any other team.</div><div><br /></div><div>Be sure to check back from now until Wednesday for more free agent profiles.</div> ]]></description>

            <title>2009 Offseason Whirlwind</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana">Man, this week had been filled with some HUGE trades. Let's talk about 'em.</p>

<p>For my thoughts on <b>Richard Jefferson</b> going to <b>San Antonio</b>, check out this <a href="http://mvn.com/thenolookpass/2009/06/spurs-reloaded.html"><b>entry</b></a>.</p>

<p><B>SHAQUILLE O'NEAL TO CLEVELAND and SASHA PAVLOVIC AND BEN WALLACE TO PHOENIX</b><br />
Okay, so this may possibly be the biggest trade of the offseason... and the people are making me dislike <b>Cleveland</b> all over again because they're pencilling in <b>L.A. and Cleveland</b> for the <b>2010 NBA Finals</b>. Sure, O'Neal makes them tougher inside but he's not the entire solution. First off, we wonder if they can co-exist. Second, let's see how they mesh. LeBron loves to drive in and there's going to be a <b>7'1", 350-pound guy</B> inside the paint at all times.</p>

<p>But what really needs fixing is that they need more than just <b>isolation plays</b>. And, in turn, better decision-making. This stuff falls on the coach. Part of what doomed Cleveland is that they took some terrible, terrible shots. LeBron's not the greatest three-point shooter in the world and, at times, he would just chuck one up without warning. His teammates would do the same thing. Basically, while they can score, they weren't an <b>efficient scoring team</b> against <b>Orlando</b>. And while Shaq adds power to the frontline, they still need a wing scorer/slasher that can create. Yeah, I didn't explain that very well when we did our inaugural <b>8th Seed podcast</b> (check <a href="http://the8thsedd.com"><b>THAT PODCAST</b></a> out, by the way... and I'm not afraid to admit that I actually sucked it real bad in that cast).</p>

<p>As for <b>Phoenix</b>? <b>Steve Kerr</b> said that they're "a team in transition". That's never good news to the fans. With <b>Amare Stoudemire</b> being thrown around in trade rumors (which I don't get because they can still win 50 games with this team), I just wonder if Phoenix has decided to start all over. What a waste. I would think <b>Steve Nash</b> would want out, too, for a better shot at a title.</p>

<p>For other viewpoints of this trade, check out this <a href="http://mvn.com/thenolookpass/2009/06/talking-to-chicks-who-love-hoops-the-big-trade-piece.html"><b>Chicks Who Love Hoops</b></a> blog entry.</p>

<p><b>VINCE CARTER TO ORLANDO and COURTNEY LEE, TONY BATTIE, AND RAFER ALSTON TO NEW JERSEY</b><br />
I don't think this trade is as bad as some people make it out to be because I think <b>Orlando</b> is a strong enough team. However, Carter does need to adjust to being the #2 or #3 guy. He certainly fills their need on the wing position but will his head be in it? Carter's also been known to disappear a bit in the postseason. But who knows? While he was pretty good last season, maybe this motivates him even more? A change of scenery? What kind of Vince Carter are we getting here?</p>

<p><img src="http://mvn.com/thenolookpass/vince001.jpg"></p>

<p>As for the Nets' new pieces? Courtney Lee is pretty damn good and it sucks that he had to go. But he and <b>Devin Harris</b> will form a real good (HOT) backcourt. They might peddle Rafer Alston around because I'm sure he doesn't want to be an expensive back-up and Tony Battie is Tony Battie. New Jersey did accomplish freeing up MORE cap space after the shedding of Vinsanity's contract.</p>

<p>I think it works out better for Orlando if they can get <b>Hedo Turkoglu</b> back. Turkoglu was the jack-of-all-trades for Orlando (rebounding, passing, ball-handling, clutch shooting). If he leaves, I think Orlando will really miss him.</p>

<p><b>JAMAL CRAWFORD TO ATLANTA and SPEEDY CLAXTON AND ACIE LAW IV TO GOLDEN STATE</b><br />
Well, Crawford was just on his way out of G. State. <b>Don Nelson</b> and Crawford clash a lot. So Jamal had to go. But to get those bit pieces from Atlanta? I thought they could've done better. Where is Golden State going?</p>

<p>Now this represents a little conundrum for Atlanta. They sure as hell got more talented but where will Crawford fit in the equation? Is he willing to come off the bench as a potent sixth man (a la <b>Jason Terry</b> and <b>Manu Ginobili</b>)? </p>

<p><b>MIKE MILLER AND RANDY FOYE TO WASHINGTON and ETAN THOMAS, DARIUS SONGAILA, OLEXSIY PECHEROV, AND THE 5TH PICK (RICKY RUBIO) TO MINNESOTA</b><br />
Washington's a talented team that was just decimated with injuries last year. I believe they're a playoff team when healthy (ESPECIALLY <b>Gilbert Arenas</b>). Anyway, they fill their need in outside shooting with Mike Miller. I think Randy Foye's numbers were a bit inflated in Minnesota but he'll be a serviceable back-up guard (maybe even start if Arenas STILL isn't healthy). They are getting a bit crowded in the backcourt, though...</p>

<p>Minnesota just really cleaned house and was lucky to have <b>Ricky Rubio</b> drop to their laps for the 5th pick. But I'm trying to figure out their stance after they drafted <b>Jonny Flynn</b> right after Rubio. Their new players will help in the frontcourt but it's not like they'll set anything on fire. </p>

<p>By the way, the <b>New York Knicks'</b> draft pick, <b>Jordan Hill</b>? She sounds hot.</p>

Kid Congo, with the 30th pick has been unreal. It's been pretty unanimous in the feeling that Kid Congo was a bad pick. <br /><br />But here's my question for the whole ordeal: how in the world can we, as fans, say that this was a bad pick, when we don't have the slightest clue about this kid? That's my main beef.<br /><br />We can say all we want that this was a terrible pick, Ferry's terrible, blah, blah, blah but how can we say that without seeing this kid in action? Sure there's <a href="http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Christian-Eyenga-5493/">prospect</a> <a href="http://draftday.nbadraft.net/players/christian-eyenga">profiles</a> on this kid, as well as <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTew2KzGH94">YouTube! highlights</a> of him too, but neither of them are nearly enough for any fan to form a well-developed opinion on the kid. <br /><br />At least with prospects like Sam Young, Chase Budinger, DaJuan Summers, etc., there is national exposure of them. We're able to see prospects like them on T.V., on highlight videos, during March Madness, etc. On top of that they're well-known prospects that have tons of information collected about them and there's pretty much a consensus among scouting services about their strengths, weaknesses and what type of player they project to be. With all the information available to us with those type of players, we're able to form a decently informed opinion of the kid and it's at the point where we can talk about and even judge them when they're pick if we want to (even though that's not smart, you get what I mean).<br /><br />With Eyenga, there is none of that. Which is why all the people bashing this pick are xenophobes (had to tie it in). They're afraid of the unknown, in this case Kid Congo, and because they're not too sure on him the automatic human reaction is to bash it, or be angry about the pick. The same thing happened last year with JJ Hickson. Not a lot of people knew a whole bunch about him and all of a sudden bashed him because they were ignorant when it came to the pick. The national media, message boards, and fans all over wanted guys like Kosta Kofous, Darell Arthur, Chris Douglas-Roberts, etc., because they were guys that people had a lot of information on and were able to make a decently informed opinion on.<br /><br />People are just like animals. When animals come into contact with something that they're unfamiliar with or not comfortable with, they automatically become suspicious, edgy and sort of protective. Similar to humans, when we come into contact with something unfamiliar, we become sort of protective, uncomfortable and scared. This is the same with Kid Congo: because we're unfamiliar with him, we become kind of uncomfortable and scared (which leads to anger). <br /><br />Before I go on any further, let me just say this: in no way am I trying to defend the pick by Danny Ferry. Heck <a href="http://mvn.com/cavalierattitude/2009/06/danny-ferry-you-screwed-this-draft-up.html">my first initial reaction was quite similar to Amar's</a>. But after thinking about it, I came to the conclusion that we can't really come to a judgment on this pick because we have no knowledge of the kid. So if we are ignorant on a certain subject, how can we say it's a bust or not? We can't, which is why I don't get the outrage by the Cavs fans across the nation.<br /><br />I know part of the outrage is about Kid Congo himself but it seems like most of the rage is directed towards not picking proven college players like Sam Young, DeJuan Blair, Chase Budinger or DaJuan Summers or at least better known "projects" like Derrick Brown. I can definitely see that though because, again, these are players that fans are more comfortable and know more about them.<br /><br />But let me say this: if anybody expects the 30th pick in the draft to be able to contribute his rookie year for a team like the Cleveland Cavaliers (66 win team last year, best record in the NBA, Central Division champions, made it to the Eastern Conference Finals, etc.) then they're crazy. Not to mention, the 30th pick in what was considered to be one of the weakest drafts in NBA history.<br /><br />Sure guys like Sam Young, DeJuan Blair, Chase Budinger are billed as "NBA ready" players who can contribute right away, but we're talking about the Cavs here. Not the Oklahoma City Thunder or the Minnesota Timberwolves; the Cleveland Cavaliers.<br /><br />With free agency still left along with trades still being allowed, I'd be willing to bet we add a minimum of two rotational players to the roster, if not more. So taking that into consideration, where does a rookie (30th pick in the draft) seem to fit in and contribute right away? Including our current roster and the likely addition of at least a couple of rotational players via trade and/or free agency, our rotation will probably look at least 9 deep. And that's not including guys like JJ Hickson, Darnell Jackson and maybe even Tarence Kinsey, who might get playing time this year. Do you guys realize Joe Smith, Wally Szczerbiak, Sasha Pavlovic and Daniel Gibson, really didn't see the floor that much versus the Magic? Joe Smith only played in 2 games of where he had 10 or more minutes. Sasha basically played two games of 20-minute ball and that&nbsp; was it for the series. Wally Szczerbiak had two DNP's and basically was forced to play the last 3 games because of the inefficiency of the bench. Daniel Gibson got 6 minutes the first 3 games before 64 minutes the next 3.<br /><br />Now it can be said Mike Brown screwed the pooch on who to play and who not to play but the point is, if he was forced to play veterans and those veterans didn't play much to begin with, how do you expect him to play a rookie who was picked 30th overall in the Eastern Conference Finals? Because really, let's get serious here: it doesn't matter what happens in the regular season anymore, it's all about the playoffs. And how in the world would you expect a rookie to contribute anything more than a couple minutes in the Eastern Conference Finals, let alone the Finals?<br /><br />I understand an argument can be made using Daniel Gibson and Courtney Lee as examples rookies playing big roles for their playoff teams and being picked late in the draft. But those types of cases happen very, very, very rarely. <br /><br />The bottom line is that Ferry really didn't see anyone who could contribute right away at #30, as he should have, and saw it worth the risk to take a flier on a guy who they see as having high potential then rather taking a guy who wouldn't likely contribute this year anyway.<br /><br />Aside from those points, the pick also goes deeper than that.<br /><br />Let's remember that all 1st round picks have guaranteed money being paid to them, basically as soon as they're picked. So basically, once they're picked they're locked into the rookie scale right away. The rookie scale for the 30th pick is $989k. So for a player that wasn't likely to contribute at all during his rookie season, the Cavs would have been paying around $1 million for him to sit the bench. Now I know there's a possibility that the rookie could have contributed but instead of that $1 million being paid for him to sit the bench, that $1 million can be allocated to different resources. It can helps us sign a free agent, he could helps us via trade, etc.<br /><br />Now I can understand why fans would say "well if Dan Gilbert is willing
to spend, then why is he worried about $1 million". But it's the fact
that he doesn't want to spend the money, it's just he wants to do it
wisely.<font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><span class="Estilo5 Estilo52 Estilo52 Estilo52"></span></font><br /><br />And before you go criticizing Dan Gilbert for being "cheap", look at what the Los Angeles Lakers did. They had the 29th and 42nd picks in the NBA draft. Instead of picking those players, they instead sold those picks to teams for money. Because like the Cavs, they figured that those players wouldn't likely be able to contribute right away and they were better served getting cash for those picks and helping them to sign free agents, or in their case re-sign Trevor Ariza and/or Lamar Odom. Now they are the NBA Champions but does that mean they're being cheap too? Or are they just being smart with their money? At least the Cavs will get a player out of their pick, instead of just giving it away.<br /><br />Now getting back to the players actually available at the pick, let's take an deeper look at them.<br /><br />Sam Young. Thought of as one of the safest picks in the draft and a guy who could contribute right away. Right now the Cavs need a defender first and foremost on the wing and he's billed to be a good defender. So how could this not be the perfect fit? Well right now I don't see how he has a position in the NBA. It's my belief that he's too small to guard most SFs and too slow to guard most SGs. So where does he play then? That's my problem. But if Ferry really would have wanted him, he would have gotten him. Let's not forget that Ferry and Pittsburgh coach, Jamie Dixon, are pretty tight and has pretty much all the information possible on him, and DeJuan Blair. So if he passed on him, it's probably for a good reason.<br /><br />DeJuan Blair. A steal at #30, right? Where does he fit? He can't play with Varejao because that would be a disaster offensively. Not to mention, why draft another undersized forward/center after drafting two last year, in Darnell Jackson and JJ Hickson? Or how about our newest acquisition, Shaquille O'Neal. How would he fit in with him? Or better yet, what about those knees? <a href="http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/ian_thomsen/06/26/weekly.countdown/index.html">As one story in SI.com said</a>: "Most team doctors red-flagged him, which prevented the GMs from taking Blair in the first round."<br /><br />Derrick Brown. I certainly was a big proponent and was kind of upset that we didn't take him. But at the same time, he wasn't going to contribute now, as well as Eyenga, so why not take a flier on a guy with a very high ceiling who won't cost anything, as opposed to a guy who will cost you something and doesn't have as high of a ceiling?<br /><br />DaJuan Summers. He was another guy I liked but there were some questions on him. Why couldn't he put up better rebounding numbers? Why didn't he play any defense? Why couldn't he do anything else beside spot-up shoot? Why didn't he get "it"? Summers was a guy filled with potential but loaded with downside too.<br /><br />Chase Budinger. Probably not on the top of the list as far as guys the Cavs passed on but still up there. The problem with Budinger will never talent level, how athletic he is or how good of a player he is offensively. It's mentally and defensively where the questions are. So considering that, why would the Cavs take him if their biggest weakness on the wing is defense?<br /><br />Let's keep things in perspective here: this is the draft. Not free agency. Not trades. This is the draft. A championship caliber team like the Cavs doesn't make its major improvements through the draft. They do them through trades and in free agency. So why all of a sudden, is Ferry the worst general manager in the league? Just a few days beforehand he was the best after trading for Shaq.<br /><br />The point is that this is last in line as far as places we'd look to improve in. No guy was going to contribute right away so why not take a flier on a guy that could possibly be better than anybody else on the board at the time. Is it guaranteed? No. Would Sam Young, Derrick Brown, DeJuan Blair be safer picks? Yeah probably. But none of them have the type of potential that Eyenga has.<br /><br />And yes GMs far too often get caught up with the potential word but the Cavs are in a position where they can take a low-risk move like this and hope that it pans out.<br /><br />The 30th pick in the draft isn't going to make or break our chances at a title and it isn't going to make LeBron going to go to New York. What will though is what we do via trade and through free agency, which we should be more worried about. Those are places where we can't afford to take high risks or make mistakes. Those are places we should be worried about, not the draft.<br /><br />The whole point of this article is basically for some new perspective on the situation. Will this kid turn out to be a good pro? Who knows. But that's the whole point: who knows. We can't judge or criticize a situation by knowing very little on the subject at hand.<br /><br />So kick back, relax, and let's see where Eyenga and this draft class is 3 years down the road from now, because that's when it'll be fair to assess this draft. Not now, only 2 days after the draft. And not 1 month into the season either. But 3 years.<br /><br />I know it's frustrating to see us pass on some guys that would have been safer, more comfortable picks for the fans but let's wait and see what happens the rest of the off-season before we go freaking out.<br /><br />But just remember one thing about Eyenga: he is Kid Congo.<br /><br />And oh yeah...don't be a Xenophobe.<br /><script language="javascript">AC_FL_RunContent = 0;</script><script src="http://cache.lexico.com/js/AC_RunActiveContent.js" language="javascript"></script><script type="text/javascript">var interfaceflash = new LEXICOFlashObject ( "http://cache.lexico.com/d/g/speaker.swf", "speaker", "17", "15", "<a href="\"http://dictionary.reference.com/audio.html/ahd4WAV/X0004700/xenophobia\"" target="\"_blank\""><img src="\"http://cache.lexico.com/g/d/speaker.gif\"" border="\"0\"" / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /></a>", "6");interfaceflash.addParam("loop", "false");interfaceflash.addParam("quality", "high");interfaceflash.addParam("menu", "false");interfaceflash.addParam("salign", "t");interfaceflash.addParam("FlashVars", "soundUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fcache.lexico.com%2Fdictionary%2Faudio%2Fahd4%2FX%2FX0004700.mp3&clkLogProxyUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fdictionary.reference.com%2Fwhatzup.html&t=a&d=d&s=di&c=a&ti=1&ai=51359&l=dir&o=0&sv=00000000&ip=446ebdd1&u=audio"); interfaceflash.addParam('wmode','transparent');interfaceflash.write();</script><noscript><a

What I care about is the fact that KG is CALLING Wallace to coax him to come to Boston! Does KG really feel that the Celtics need him that much?<br /><br />What about Chris Andersen? Or Brandon Bass? Those two guys can play well off the bench or in the starting line-up if injuries allow them to, but they also fit well in any locker room. Sheed has had trouble in the past when in the clubhouse, and as if it hasn't been made obvious enough yet, that's something we don't need in Boston. Even more so now after we've learned that Rondo may have some difficulties getting along with the Celtics coaching staff and front office.<br /><br />Plus, it's not like the offseason is over. The free agent market frenzy hasn't even begun, and we have PLENTY of time to trade guys in exchange for players that fulfill the team necessities. Although I doubt he'll be going anywhere now after the NBA Draft, I would advise Celtics fans to not assume that Rondo isn't gone. Ainge may have something going that he couldn't put together by the Draft's end, which prompted us to think that Rondo will still be a Boston Celtic by the start of next season.<br /><br />And even though it's quiet right now, DA (Ainge) and co. may feel that they can trade Ray Allen and get numerous solid players in return.<br /><br />Hopefully, the Celtics will just make some minor tweaks to the team and -- as if I haven't implanted this idea in your brain already -- fill some of the roster spots by adding low-risk, high-reward type of guys.<div><br /></div>]]></description>

            <title>Who Was Luckier? Us or Shaq</title>
            <description><![CDATA[You may have already read 7,635,425 blogs and articles answering the pressing question of: Will the Shaq for Cracker Jacks trade work for the Cavaliers. The short answer: No. And that's all you're getting out of me on that one. I'm here to answer a more interesting question: Is Shaq the luckiest big man of all time - or are we the lucky ones?<br /><br />With Shaq moving to Cleveland, he is paired up with Lebron James, the fifth time the Big Something or Other (© Celia Kelly) has been paired up with a great parameter player. It started in Orlando with Penny Hardaway, he moved to Los Angeles to play with Kobe Bryant, moved back to Florida to play with Dwyane Wade, shifted his weight to Arizona and played with Steve Nash and is now with one of the most freakish athletes we've ever seen? Again, I ask, who has been luckier, Shaq or us?<br /><br /> <a href="http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=shaq&amp;iid=4120904" target="_blank"><img src="http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/b/b/0/1/PicImg_NBA_FEB_26_7384.JPG?adImageId=1681997&amp;imageId=4120904" alt="NBA: FEB 26 Suns at Lakers" border="0" height="333" width="500" /></a><script type="text/javascript" src="http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js"></script> <br /><br />Off top, it seems like this answer would undeniably be Shaq. However, we've got to see the greatest center of this era, and one of the most candid athletes of all time, play with some of the most exciting basketball players of the last decade, and we're just months away from seeing him team up with the most exciting in the game now. <br /><br />Has a center ever been more blessed to play with more future Hall of Famers than Shaq? Kareem got to play with Oscar Robertson and Magic Johnson. Wilt played with Elgin Baylor and Jerry West. Russell played with Bob Cousy. Olajuwon played with Clyde Drexler, but that was at the end of his career. The most exciting perimeter player Robinson played with was Rod Strickland, and had Ginobili as a rookie as he was leaving the league. Ewing had John Starks, Xavier McDaniel and Larry Johnson. None of those lists jump out at you like Penny, Kobe, Wade, Nash and Lebron - no second name needed for any of them. <br /><br />Was Shaq lucky when Orlando drafted the crafty, ultra athletic Penny Hardaway from Memphis in 1993? Shaq was drafted in '92 to bring life to a franchise that had been dead since its beginning and Hardaway was brought in to play Jake Hoyt to Shaq's Alonzo and tear through the league. Young Shaq and Penny made the NBA Finals in their second year together, establishing Shaq as one of the most dominate young centers the league had ever seen despite getting swept in the Finals. In Penny's first season, Shaq saw his scoring increase by six points per game, but again, maybe we were the lucky ones. Hardaway was one of those point guards who wasn't afraid to get in the lane and try and dunk on someone. It seemed like he made one ridiculous no-look pass every game and just had swag beyond his years. How could you top watching what some thought may have been the center position evolving with a 7'1'', 300 pound man who could run the floor and had a post game for half court sets? Sadly, just like Alonzo and Jake in "Training Day," Shaq and Penny had different views on the way things were supposed to operate and that made a disgruntled big man pick up his things and leave Orlando for Los Angeles to get paired with what would go on to be the best duo of the first half of the next decade. <br /><br />Shaq's move to Los Angeles proved to be a huge one indeed. Was he lucky to be traded to a team that just drafted Kobe Bryant, the young wonder kid and the newest "Next Michael Jordan?" When they were on the court together it posed problems never seen before in the NBA. We had never seen a problem like the problem the Kobe-Shaq problem posed for NBA teams before they got together in '96. If you double-teamed Shaq, Kobe went to work, if you double-teamed Kobe, Shaq went to work. There was now way to double team them AND defend three other professional basketball players. With Kobe, Shaq earned an MVP, three titles and a Finals MVP for each title he won with Kobe. With Kobe as his partner in crime, he solidified his spot as a top three center of all time.&nbsp; Not only that, when they went to work it was exciting. So, maybe we were the lucky ones? You remember that lob Kobe threw to Shaq against Portland they have in those "Where Amazing Happens" commercials or when Shaq was shooting technical free throws against Sacramento or when Kobe took over in overtime against Indiana in the finals when Shaq fouled out. Then Kobe pissed him off and he moved on (we all know that story, so I'll move on).<br /><br /> <object height="364" width="445"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/onEnvKrxHVc&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;color1=0x3a3a3a&amp;color2=0x999999&amp;border=1" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/onEnvKrxHVc&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;color1=0x3a3a3a&amp;color2=0x999999&amp;border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" height="364" width="445"></object> <br /><br />Was Shaq lucky to be paired with Dwyane Wade after leaving Los Angeles? Wade came into the league and instantly took Tracy McGrady's spot as the best natural shooting guard in the NBA. Wade was relentless in his attack of the basket and Shaq was still dominant, yet willing to play second fiddle. He averaged 22 and 10 his first season there and won a title in his second, basically getting his revenge against Kobe with the new Kobe. Wade helped resurrect Shaq's career after it looked like he was aging after the Lakers' Finals loss to Detroit. However, the fans got much from Shaq going to Miami too. For those who loved drama, the networks fed that hunger with Christmas day meetings, documented accounts of those Kobe-Shaq handshakes, sound bytes from each player with commentary, each completely over-blowing the situation. Most importantly, the world was exposed to the greatness that is Dwyane Wade. I remember gushing over him while he was at Marquette. Shaq moving to Miami really brought Wade's unique game to the forefront. After Wade, did anyone think Shaq's career could be resurrected again?<br /><br />Maybe Steve Nash did. Maybe Shaq was lucky enough to play with one of the three best point guards of the past decade. If you don't remember, Shaq's last season in Miami (07-08) he was looking ridiculously old. He had lost 309 steps, he couldn't get on the boards and he didn't have a healthy Wade to take the heat off of him (no pun intended). Fast forward to this season and he averaged 17.8 ppg (most since the '05-'06 season) and 8.4 boards. Once Nash learned how to play with someone who clogged the middle as much as Shaq did, Shaq's numbers became surprisingly good for a 37 year-old who had been carrying over 300 pounds for almost two decades (Shaq averaged 18.7 and 7.7 during their last 25 games as they made a push for the playoffs, which seemed unfathomable just a year and a half before that). While Shaq was in Phoenix, were we ever blessed with a better year and a half chalk full of memorable Shaq quotes? <br /><br />-"The Big Shaqtus." <br />-"Kobe, tell me how my ass taste." <br />-"I know for a fact that he's a master of panic, and when it gets time for his team to go in the postseason and do certain things, he will let them down because of his panic." <br />-"I figured out a long time ago that the reason I'm a great athlete is because I'm a great dancer." <br /><br />Speaking of dancing, what about that dance performance he had before the All-Star game? And speaking of the All-Star game, what about the co-MVP performance which included that gorgeous between the legs of Dwight Howard pass to Chris Paul that turned into a give and go with a classic Shaq dunk finish. <br /><br />And speaking of finishing, is Shaq lucky that he may be able to finish his career in Cleveland with the best finisher (at the basket, not at the end of the game just to be clear) in the game? Should we have expected anything different in considering how his career has gone? We may be witnessing some highly entertaining basketball, especially with the team camaraderie they already have - which brings me to where the fans may be lucky. Remember when Shaq and LeBron were battling for the best pre-game performances? Now, we have the two best in the game working together, the possibilities are endless. It's already a fun loving team, and now they're bringing in the most fun loving big man of all time. Even though this is not going to turn into a championship for Cleveland (unless they sign a bigger defensive minded swing man, in which case this team is really scary), at least we'll have a season of very entertaining Cavaliers games. <br /><br />I don't know who has been luckier, but it's safe to say that Shaq and the fans alike should be excited for what next season could potentially be. <br /><br /> ]]></description>
