Gortat verbally commits to Mavericks

Marc Stein of ESPN is reporting that Orlando Magic center Marcin Gortat has verbally committed to sign an offer sheet with the Dallas Mavericks. The Spurs were interested in the 6'11'' Polish center who made a name for himself last season as Dwight Howard's backup. However, they are more interested in Rasheed Wallace or Antonio McDyess. It does hurt some to see a division rival pick up a big, young center.

2009 Offseason Whirlwind Continued

All right. The whirlwind offseason continues. These are just verbal deals and they can't officially sign until July 8. People might still pull a Carlos Boozer. Anyway...

***Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva to Detroit***
The signing of Ben Gordon, I think, effectively ends Richard Hamilton's stint as a Piston. I don't know what to make of this team as everyone seems to be going their separate ways. Rasheed Wallace is going somewhere for sure and Tayshaun Prince seems to be on the trading block.

As for Charlie Villanueva, he's a great scoring option... but it's really hard to gauge this team until the offseason is over. Plus they still don't have a coach.

***Marcin Gortat to Dallas***
Erick Dampier seems to be on his way out... and Gortat earned his contract by playing well in the postseason. I guess, in the meantime, Dallas is just hoping that they don't get the Jerome James effect here (play well in the playoffs and then be an absolute bust after the huge contract signing). But they do get some depth in the frontline, if nothing else.

***Ron Artest to the L.A. Lakers***
Wow.

I've heard all the concerns already. He's not going to fit in the triangle. He'll hold on to the ball too long. Kobe and Artest don't get along, blah blah blah.

Remember when Dennis Rodman went to the Chicago Bulls? Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen supposedly wouldn't get along with Rodman, right? Since he was part of the Bad Boys? Well, those Bulls turned out some of the greatest teams in NBA history. Rodman respected the hell out of Jordan, Pippen, and Phil Jackson. I mean, for Christ's sake, they're all basketball players. Artest is going to be asked to play basketball, not rhythmic gymnastics. He'll be fine.

Well, same case here. Artest respects the hell out of Kobe Bryant. He also goes way back with Lamar Odom (if re-signed). And Phil is coaching this team. In the end, it should be fine. And I think this is an upgrade over Trevor Ariza. If Artest has his head in place, that is. Ron seemed like a Top 10 player in the league before that infamous brawl at the Palace. I don't think Trevor Ariza can get to that level.

***Trevor Ariza to Houston***
He lost. That's all I have to say.

Laker fans SHOULD be excited but that doesn't mean it's a title win for L.A. Every top team is stacking up at the moment. And Dwyane Wade and Steve Nash are probably smashing furniture at their homes this minute.

MORE OFFSEASON COVERAGE
David Diep covers another "miracle on Figueroa St."
My reaction on the trades made thus far

Follow me on Twitter. I am @TheNoLookPass. I'm a nice guy. Really.

NBA Rumor Mill: T-Mac Trade Talks Heat Up, Rondo Stays in Boston & Kidd Wants Greener Pastures

The past week in the NBA showed us more moves than Michael Jackson, who we mourn the passing of. Richard Jefferson to the Spurs, Vinsanity to the Magic and Shaq Daddy to the Cavs can only mean one thing, more excitement for us next season. The NBA Draft had plenty of shocking moments and drama. So while you speculate on how the New York Knicks will get Ricky Rubio from Minnesota, check out the latest rumors around the NBA.

T-Mac Getting Plenty of Suitors

As a Houston Rockets fan, I kept waiting for the ball to drop last night on a trade involving Tracy McGrady. It didn't happen. Amare Stoudemire was rumored to be heading to Houston but that talk was dismissed when it became clear Amare's new destination is likely to be in Golden State. That doesn't mean teams don't want McGrady, or should I say they want his expiring contract after next season. This week showed us that teams are desperate to get cap room.

Rockets' GM Daryl Morey has been getting his phone blown up about T-Mac, according to SLAM Online. " How would Morey describe other teams' pursuits of McGrady? "Very aggressive' ...'We're getting a lot of interest on Tracy, and I do have to listen," Morey said. "It's my job to make this team as ready to win the title as possible. I think the reason we are going to have a pretty high bar on moving him is because he still provides exactly what coach (Rick Adelman) and I thought we were missing, which was a guy who can get a high-quality shot at the end of the game. That said, we want to position ourselves for the playoffs, it looks like it's going to be hard for Tracy to be here for a good chunk of the year, so if we can get a talented player who helps us all season, I think we have to look at it."

No disrespect to T-Mac but he has to go. The Rockets need to get something for him now before it's too late. To wait until 2010 would be the biggest mistake Morey, a brilliant GM, could make.

Ainge Aims to Keep Rondo

Danny Ainge didn't do himself any good by openly discussing Rajon Rondo's issues. All that resulted as a battle between Rondo's representation and Ainge. The verbal war led to rumors that Rondo was being packaged with Ray Allen for other teams. Now Danny wants to make it clear he has no interest in getting rid of the talented but stubborn point guard. SI.Com brought the goods that Danny told to the Boston Globe.

"People are trying to make Rondo into a Manny situation," Ainge said on Draft Night. "All I said was that he needs to work on his leadership skills, he can't be late for a playoff game, and he needs to mature as far as competing on a consistent basis. I'd said all that before. All those trade rumors are just a bunch of bull. I'm not trading Rondo."

I think it's a good idea to keep Rondo. What value could you get equal to him? He's a young talent that stepped up big when Kevin Garnett went out. Rondo staying put is a good thing for the Celtics.

Kidd May Move From Mavericks

Jason Kidd is one of the most unselfish players in the NBA, but it is starting to look like he is aware that his window of opportunity for a ring is slipping. This could explain why he reportedly doesn't want to re-sign with Dallas.

SI.Com discusses an article by the Fort-Worth Star Telegram that claims friends close to Kidd think the point guard wants to play on a title contender. Dallas doesn't fall into that category. They surprised people at the end of the season but were clearly outclassed by Denver. Kidd isn't going to win a title in Dallas. End of story.

.

Few quick thoughts...

This could either make or break the Magic's chances next year. Carter has always been a reliable scorer and a clutch player, which may prompt them to let Hedo leave. The main reason they were trying to re-sign him was because of the major role he played on the team. With Carter there, they won't need to restrain him from joining another team. But, Carter also has been known for his disruptive behavior in the locker room at times (more on the third bullet). Screwing up chemistry is dangerous for any team, especially the Magic.

The Magic are likely done this offseason. They may try to shape their team out this Summer by signing a few minor free agents. Obviously, if they don't grab an SG in the free agent market, Mickael Pietrus will assume the starting shooting guard role, allowing Carter to become the team's small forward (that is if the Magic don't bring back Turkoglu).

Van Gundy will have his hands full next year. Although Alston is gone, he still has some big egos with Howard, Carter, Rashard Lewis. The Magic have an interesting mix of players, and it will be costly for SVG to even think about letting his guard down.

Lakers send 29th pick the New York Knicks for cash.

Rumors have the Suns asking for Chandler in exchange for Ben Wallace.

Pacers Pulse (via Indy Cornrows): Pacers close to trading for Bulls two first rounders, surrender 13th pick.

Rondo's agent responds to Ainge's criticism.

Ray believes he'll stay.

Ray WANTS to stay.

CelticsBlog: Analysis of Draft day.

Expect Rondo to be involved or mentioned in Draft day trades.

Bob Ryan: The curious case of Rajon Rondo.

Blazers deal three picks to Dallas for pick number 22.

Crawford to Atlanta.

<strike> </strike>

Draft Day is here, and I thought you guys might want something else to do besides refresh ESPN and Yahoo! every five seconds.
2009 NBA Mock Draft - Version 2.0

A week and a half after publishing Version 1.0,
it's time to edit the first round of the draft. There will be many
picks that don't change, but there are definitely some risers and
fallers and that will be depicted in this version.

1. Los Angeles Clippers - Blake Griffin, F, Oklahoma

This is a no-brainer pick. He has been the #1 pick in this draft
since last November and has won every Player of the Year award you can
think of. I've already posted my thoughts on this pick
for the Clippers, so I won't go over it again. He's got the potential
to be a top power forward in the league in a few years, but also if he
doesn't develop much of an offensive game, could have already plateud.
I don't expect that to happen, so he will develop into a very good,
borderline great, power forward in the league.

2. Memphis Grizzlies - Ricky Rubio, G, Spain

Rubio's agent has already said they will do what they can to avoid him going to either Memphis or Oklahoma City,
but the same agent tried to do this with Yi last year and failed.
Ultimately, I think Rubio decides to play for whoever takes him and
Memphis, with the #2 pick, should take the 2nd best talent on the
board. People widely consider Rubio and Thabeet to round out the top-3
with Griffin, but I could see Memphis consider Jordan Hill at this pick
if they do not want to stunt the growth of Mike Conley, Jr. In the end,
Rubio is the pick and should embrace the chance to play with OJ Mayo
and Rudy Gay.

Memphis' brass has been over in Spain interviewing this kid and Marc
Gasol, fellow Spaniard, has talked to him as well and it seems as if
Rubio is coming around to the idea of being in Memphis.

3. Oklahoma City Thunder - Hasheem Thabeet, C, Connecticut

The Thunder have many holes and are not in a position to draft by,
well, position. Other than Westbrook, Durant and Jeff Green have
solidified their spots on this team. Nenad Krstic was a nice pickup
last year, but he's not a center you would want to build around.
Thabeet would give them an instant upgrade in the defense department
and if his offense ever comes around, he could become a really nice
player. He must bulk up, but who in the draft doesn't? Also considered
James Harden and DeMar DeRozan at this spot.

4. Sacramento Kings - Brandon Jennings, G, Italy

The Kings have drafted big men in the last two drafts with Spencer
Hawes and Jason Thompson. Both of them look as if they will grow into
good players in the league. Add to those two Kevin martin and Andres
Nocioni, the lack of a playmaking point guard really holds this team
back. Beno Udrih was given a horrible contract
and the Kings will be eating that while Jennings runs the show. Though
Jennings isn't a pure point guard, his scoring ability will be greatly
welcomed by the Kings.

5. Washington Wizards - Jordan Hill, F, Arizona

The Wizards are actually trying to shop the pick, but if they keep
it, I think Hill will be a great pick at #5. I think that Hill will be
the 3rd best prospect in the draft behind Blake Griffin and DeMar
DeRozan. Hill has developed his game to a higher level after every
season at Arizona and should only keep getting better. If he can add
more weight and some refined post moves, he'll be a very productive
player in this league.

Read the rest of the article here!

Dwight Drives Magic Past Cavs Into Finals

Panayotovich NBA Mock Draft: v. 1.0

After earning national recognition in 2007 for having the most accurate mock draft, I've got my work cut out for me yet again this summer. No worries though, I'm ready to hand it to Chad Ford for the third consecutive year row come June 25.

Remember, there is absolutely nothing set in stone at this point in time. Many changes will come about as team workouts get underway in the upcoming weeks. I'm trying to ignore all the ridiculous speculation and stay focused on penning in players where I believe they will best fit.

Things are going to get interesting after David Stern announces the reigning College Basketball Player of the Year as the top overall pick. With two players vying for the No. 2 selection, there's bound to be a domino effect for each impending scenario. Without further ado ...

1. Los Angeles -- Blake Griffin, PF, Oklahoma, So.
Headlining the 2009 draft class is the explosive Griffin, the most dominant player on the board. Blake's combination of size, speed and athleticism is second to none, and he's hands down the best player in the draft. If he can master the mid-range jumper, he'll be unstoppable. Taking Griffin is a no-brainer regardless of the plethora of big men on the Clips roster. Talk about winning the lottery.

2. Memphis -- Ricky Rubio, PG, Spain, 1990
This is where things get interesting. While the Spanish prodigy is more than ready to migrate overseas, there are several question marks surrounding his draft status. First, will he leave his comfortable situation in Spain and risk playing in a Memphis market that hasn't been kind to former nationals Pau Gasol and Juan Carlos Navarro? If yes, will the Grizzlies front office select Ricky over Thabeet, who owner Michael Heisley prefers. For now, I'll pen in Rubio because of his amazing playmaking abilities. His basketball knowledge is off the charts and some scouts say he is eerily similar to Pistol Pete. You'd have to be out of your mind to pass this kid up.

3. Oklahoma City -- James Harden, SG, Arizona State, So.
Harden exploded onto the draft scene this season as he torched the nets all year long in Tempe. Don't let the dismal tournament performance fool you, this kid can flat out score. He's got great size to go along with his sweet jumper, although I'd love to see him be more aggressive taking the ball to the cup. Harden could slide nicely into the rotation in Oklahoma City and form a very solid backcourt with Russell Westbrook. And who better to show him the ropes than Kevin Durant.

4. Sacramento -- Jrue Holiday, PG, UCLA, Fr.
Call it a reach if you must, but Holiday is the real deal. Jrue wasn't able to showcase his abilities to the fullest playing in Ben Howland's system, not to mention Darren Collison returning wasn't exactly expected. Nonetheless, Holiday fits the mold in Sacramento, where the Kings are in dire need of a point guard. His defensive tenacity is incredible and he's got one of the best motors in the draft. Combine that with his strength, exceptional floor general skills and long 6-foot-8 wingspan, and you've got all the makings of a very special player.

5. Washington -- Hasheem Thabeet, C, Connecticut, Jr.
Rumor has it the Wiz are exploring options to trade up for Thabeet after Javale McGee didn't pan out this past season. However, there's a slight possiblity that the 7-foot-3 Tanzanian could fall right into their laps. Trust me, I'm well aware of his height, shot-altering capability and ability to block shots into next week, but after watching him get pushed around by Michigan State in the Final Four, I saw nothing but red flags. I'm still skeptical of his strength and defensive positioning in the paint. He's a sure-fire top five pick, but I've got him at the back end because he's very, very raw -- and his offensive artillery is a joke.

6. Minnesota -- Tyreke Evans, PG/SG, Memphis, Fr.
Simply put, Evans is a proven winner and he wants the ball in his hands with the game on the line. That's saying a lot for a 19-year-old that played in such a high-tempo offense at Memphis. He cemented himself throughout March Madness as the best freshman in all of college basketball with an amazing 33-point performance against Missouri. His ability to drive the lane and attack the basket is hard to overlook, and he's a great ball handler with an explosive first step. The sky is the limit for the Aston, Pa., native.

7. Golden State -- Brandon Jennings, PG, Italy, 1989
Unfortunately, college basketball fans didn't get to witness how talented the American exile was this past season as he opted to skip college and bring his game overseas. And while he had a slight falling out with Lottomatica Roma, it doesn't change his freakish speed and athleticism, not to mention his ability to create off the dribble and envision reads before they happen. Pair him with Monta Ellis and you have a dangerous backcourt for years to come.

8. New York -- Stephen Curry, PG, Davidson, Jr.
Not sure whether Knick fans are going to ring out cheers or boos, but it seems almost certain that Curry will be playing his home games at the Garden next season. He fits perfectly into Mike D'Antoni's run-and-gun offense and he's got the sweetest stroke in the draft. DeMar DeRozan would be a tremendous fit as well, but something tells me the star of the 2008 tourney is headed for the Big Apple.

9. Toronto -- Jordan Hill, PF, Arizona, Jr.
A lot of experts are penning Hill in the top five, although I've got him falling at the moment because the majority of teams before Toronto are looking to draft guards. He'd have the luxury of going up against Chris Bosh on a regular basis and could help shoulder the load shoud CB4 leave in the summer of 2010. Depending upon how well Hill works out (and where Thabeet is picked), he could definitely rise up the board when all is said and done.

10. Milwaukee -- Jonny Flynn, PG, Syracuse, So.
Flynn's stock has skyrocketed as of late as several GMs are impressed with his athleticism and explosiveness. As he displayed throughout the Big East and NCAA tournaments, Flynn is a great leader and an extremely strong player that pushes the ball relentlessly. And his vertical leap more than makes up for his lack of height. Should Ramon Sessions bolt for free agency, the Syracuse alum could easily pick up the slack and keep the Milwaukee train on track.

11. New Jersey -- DeJuan Blair, PF, Pittsburgh, So.
I can understand why GM Rod Thorn wants toughness at the 4. Watching a platoon of Ryan Anderson and Yi Jianlin at power forward would have me drooling at the mouth for a player of Blair's caliber. He's built like a tight end and possesses great hands to accompany his insane 7-foot-3 wingspan. While he might not have the height of the typical PF, there's nothing small about his play down in the paint.

12. Charlotte -- DeMar DeRozan, SG, USC, Fr.
Getting a player with DeRozan's skill set and potential at this point in the draft would be a no-brainer for the Bobcats. He might be the best athlete in the entire draft and his size has scouts and GMs shaking their heads. There are still a couple question marks with his game, but with the way he progressed throughout his freshman year at USC, I wouldn't be shocked if he was an All-Star in five years with how much talent he brings to the table.

13. Indiana -- Jeff Teague, PG, Wake Forest, So.
With the way his sophomore campaign ended against Cleveland State, I'd love to see Teague return to Winston-Salem for his junior season. If not, he's got the talent and potential to warrant a lottery selection, and as he showed in huge wins over North Carolina and Duke, he's a playmaking leader that can score at will. With Jarrett Jack's Pacers future in question, Teague would be a great replacement. When his ball handling abilities and decision making come full circle, he's going to be an absolute stud.

14. Phoenix -- Earl Clark, SF, Louisville, Jr.
The Suns would love to get their hands on Clark, as he was a tremendous asset all year long for Louisville. His natural versatility would work wonders in the Suns' fast-paced offensive attack. The athletic Clark plays long, he's a great distributor and he makes scoring look easy from 15 feet and in. God help defenders if he bulks up and develops a low-post arsenal.

15. Detroit -- Austin Daye, SF, Gonzaga, So.
While his best dayes are down the road, Detroit is re-stocking for the future and should have the patience to wait for a star like Daye to develop. He's still visibily frail, but that was the knock on Tayshaun Prince as well. The Irvine, Ca., product will never bang in the post with the power forwards, but if he packs on the pounds and hits the weight room, he'll be a dangerous weapon at the 3. Daye has all the tools to be a star; whether or not he's motivated to become one is the key.

16. Chicago -- Gerald Henderson, SG, Duke, Jr.
It was hard dropping Henderson this low because he's such a tough, talented player. Or maybe I'm just biased and would love to see him playing for the Bulls. Either way, he's extremely versatile and does everything very well. His biggest knock is that he's undersized, but hell, I'll take my chances on someone that has the testicular fortitude to hammer Psycho T in the nose.

17. Philadelphia -- Ty Lawson, PG, North Carolina, Jr.
Assuming the Sixers don't bring back Andre Miller, they'll be faced with the decision of taking Lawson or Eric Maynor. Many consider it a coin flip, although I point to this past NCAA Tournament as Lawson's breakout party. He was by far the biggest reason the Tar Heels won the national title as his quickness worked wonders on both ends of the floor. He's a great athlete with good court vision and his size concerns will go to the wayside if he learns how to change speeds.

18. Minnesota -- James Johnson, PF, Wake Forest, So.
Many feel Johnson has what it takes to crack the lottery seeing as how he's a unbelievable athlete with great size and build for the pros. However, as someone who's seen him play at least 10 times, his basketball IQ suffers compared to his competition. So many times this season Johnson thought he was a point guard in transition and either lost the handle or threw the ball away. That won't cut it in the league. He's still got the tools though, and a team like Minnesota should have no problem taking a flier on him.

19. Atlanta -- Eric Maynor, PG, Virginia Commonwealth, Sr.
With Acie Law not cutting it in Hotlanta, the Hawks are primed to select Maynor, who is one of the most NBA ready players in the draft. He's a seasoned veteran that excelled in the national spotlight against the likes of Duke and UCLA. He might not be as quick as Lawson, but he's better at attacking the basket. Combine that with his defensive repertoire, and you've got a well-rounded player that will get results.

20. Utah -- Tyler Hansbrough, PF, North Carolina, Sr.
Like most college seniors that enter the draft, Hansbrough has a limited upside as far as growth is concerned, but you can't discount his tenacious play in the paint on both sides of the floor. He's the type of gritty, hard-nosed player that could flourish under Jerry Sloan in Utah. T-Hans is an extremely hard worker that outhustles and outworks his competition. He's not the most talented player, but with a sweet mid-range jumper and the ability to get to the charity stripe and convert, he'd be a bargain at No. 20.

21. New Orleans -- Wayne Ellington, SG, North Carolina, Jr.
The Philadelphia native's hot hand from three-point land would undoubtedly give the Hornets another perimeter option off the dribble-drive for Chris Paul. Ellington was a shooting star throughout the NCAA Tournament and by working on his pull-up last offseason, he's more than just a catch-and-shoot player. His range mirrors that of Curry's and when he gets hot there's no cooling him off.

22. Dallas -- B.J. Mullens, C, Ohio State, Fr.
With Erick Dampier posting some of the lowest averages of his career this season, it might be time to invest in a center for the future. Mullens was a projected Top 5 pick at the beginning of the college season on potential alone, although he struggled often in Columbus. Still, that doesn't change the fact that he possess an unfair amount of size and athleticism. He's explosive above the rim and when he gets it all together, he'll definitely be a productive player.

23. Sacramento -- Gani Lawal, PF, Georgia Tech, So.
While there's still a strong possibility he withdraws from the draft and returns for his junior season, the Kings would love to scoop him up and let him develop along an already young frontcourt featuring Jason Thompson and Spencer Hawes. Lawal is long and athletic, and he's a very tough, physical player. He's still raw, but at this point, it's all about potential.

24. Portland -- Chase Budinger, SG, Arizona, Jr.
Trade rumors for Rudy Fernandez are heating up again and should Kevin Pritchard pull the trigger, Budinger has enough athleticism and explosiveness to fill the void. A former volleyball player, Chase is blessed with an insane vertical that allows him to crash the boards better than most of his matchup players. His jumpshot keeps getting better and better and he's not afraid to create his own looks.

25. Oklahoma City -- DaJuan Summers, SF, Georgetown, Jr.
Summers is a great athlete with loads of talent and potential. While he was the prototypical small forward in college, many believe he has the size and the know-how to develop a low post game. He's an above average shooter, but he needs to be more aggressive and attack the paint. At this point in the draft though, he's definitely worth the selection.

26. Chicago -- Terrence Williams, SF, Louisville, Sr.
One of the most flamboyant players in the draft, Williams is the definition of versatility. An extremely athletic point forward that explodes to the basket, T-Will has all the tools of a lottery pick although his decision making and tendency to disappear has scared teams away. However, in a less heralded role where he isn't expected to make all the big plays, Williams could flourish.

27. Memphis -- Sam Young, SF, Pittsburgh, Sr.
If Young had not just turned 24-years-old, we'd be locking him into the lottery. Scouts are questioning his upside (or lack thereof) despite his ability to score from inside and outside, and finish with the best of them above the rim. Young has come a long way on the defensive side of the ball as well and he could really find his niche playing with Rudy Gay and O.J. Mayo in Memphis.

28. Minnesota -- DeMarre Carroll, PF, Missouri, Sr.
A scrappy, hard-nosed player, Carroll made a name for himself this season leading Mizzou to the Elite Eight. He's a very strong player that loves to crash the boards. His stock is rising after a few great workouts, where I've heard his jumpshot has improved by leaps and bounds. Carroll is a little undersized for the 4, but his athleticism and energy could be vital off the bench for the Wolves.

29. Los Angeles -- Darren Collison, PG, UCLA, Sr.
Collison is a very interesting player as he was pegged as a potential lottery pick during his sophomore season in Westwood. Things didn't quite go as planned, but the senior guard is a fantastic all-around prospect at the point guard position. Derek Fisher is waning out the end of his career, and picking a incredibly quick court general like Collison with NBA range and great defensive length would be well worth the risk if Jordan Farmar isn't ready to handle the everyday duties.

30. Cleveland -- Derrick Brown, PF, Xavier, Jr.
Brown would bring explosiveness and athleticism to a frontcourt that definitely lacks a punch. Ilgauskas has never been known for his toughness and Varejao is nowhere to be found on the offensive end of the ball. Brown is a strong finisher around the circle and is adept at shooting the long ball (43 percent). He's a little bit of a tweener, but should he remain in the draft, it's worth the risk to give him a shot.

Welcome to Talking To Chicks Who Love Hoops. We all know female sports fans are a hot commodity for us dudes. Maybe not as rare as we think but us guys always think they're inferior when it comes to sports knowledge. Well, in this feature, I talk to them about the NBA and check what goes through their heads. And I ask them about everything else in an attempt to make this more fun and versatile instead of just straight sports. And watch out; these chicks might know more than you guys. Hell, they might even know more than yours truly.

Well, when I found out that I was going to be talking to a Denver Nuggets fan, I admit that I was a bit amped about it. Our teams are currently facing each other for the Western Conference Finals. So Shae and I are just basically going back and forth at the moment. But in this exchange, we managed to put all that snark aside (sorta) for an intelligent conversation about basketball. This conversation was done in between the end of the Rockets/Lakers series to right before Game 2 of the Denver/Lakers series. Something tells me that this isn't the end of this exchange...

So check out this awesome discourse. My E-Mails are in purple and hers are in dark blue.

Dear Shaeness,

The Denver Nuggets. Probably one of the better stories out there. If you told me that they would make the Western Conference Finals before the season started, I would've thought you were crazy. Now I understand that every fan gets a little delusional once in a while and feels they'll do waaaaaaay better than what is expected. But let's get realistic here; how did you think the Nuggets were going to do? But then again, who knew your team was going to get Chauncey Buh-Buh-Buh-Buh-Buh-Billups?

So tell me your first memories of the Nuggets. Because I understand you've been Colorado through and through. I'm trying to remember what the hell I remember from the Nuggets besides Dikembe Mutombo and his 8th-seeded Nuggets upset the #1 Seattle Supersonics in 1994. Ironically, those Sonics were coached by now-Nugget coach George Karl. Were you already into basketball in '94?

I talked to your beautiful sister, Paige, a few weeks ago about her Suns. So is it like.... a sibling rivalry if the Nuggets and Suns play each other? Do you talk trash to each other? Do you throw eggs at each other? Do you bag on each other's moms? ;) Ha ha ha ha ha. All kidding aside, give me your best one-liner. SHOULD THE LAKERS make the Conference Finals... I expect you to mouth off. Ha ha ha.

Anyway, hit me back. If you got questions, feel free to ask me. Maybe the Lakers make it past the Rockets by the time you E-Mail me back. We'll see what's up.

Rey-Rey

Ha ha ha ha ha. I didn't even wait for her to get started.

Dear Rey-Rey~

I need to first begin this by saying GO NUGGETS!! It is imperative that I properly set the tone for this interview!! and now that we've got that out of the way let's begin.

I must first say that I am very excited that the Nuggets are set to battle the Lakers for the Western Conference Finals! It is like a repeat of 1985... only difference being that the Nuggets will dominate this time! Though the 2 team have so many similarities, the one thing that we have that the Lakers do not is consistency. I have been a big believer in the Nuggets and their ability from the start of the season. I knew that they had the talent and the skills to show the world what they could do, but it was when they traded Iverson for Billups that I was convinced that he was the missing link that we desperately needed. Having Chauncey on the team seemed to bring a unity to an already great team. As it currently stands, we are a force to be reckoned with! The Denver Nuggets have the best of the best! Strong defense tactics, a team full of scorers like Carmelo Anthony, JR Smith (my favorite 3 point man) and of course Billups! We've got the size, talent and a few of NBA's best blockers...such as the " Birdman" (Chris Andersen) How can we not succeed! We are consistent, strong, driven, talented and professional!!

As a basketball fan my memories for the Nuggets run deep! Let me take you back. I became a true fan in 1983. I was an 8 year old girl bouncing around the house with pigtails, sporting my number 2 Alex English rainbow logo nuggets t-shirt! My fondness for the Nuggets only grew from there. I had always loved hoops, but having a home team to cheer for became almost a duty for me! As time went on so did my dedication and love for the game! You mentioned 1994 and Dikembe Mutombo, but it was Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf AKA Chris Jackson that earned my respect at that time! He was the 3 point man during that era (touretts and all) Oddly enough it seems like there is something about the 3 point shooters that does it for me! LOL! Do you sense a pattern?

As my beautiful sister Paige and her love for the Suns, it is ok with me as long as we are not playing each other!! Though we do try to maintain a level of respect..cough cough I definitely can't keep my mouth shut! I would not be "Shaeness" if I didn't have some smack to talk right?? Though I will admit that because she is my sister, and because I also chose the Suns as my second team, I try to keep the trash to a respectful minimum! As for the smack talk in reference to each-others mom? This was funny considering that we have the same mom and she is unbelievably amazing! Always cheering The Nuggets and the Suns on! As a matter a fact it was her ritualistic "cabbage patch" dance that aided in Carmelo's winning shot when they played the Mavs! Thanks Mom ;)

So here we are, today is the the day that we play the Lakers in game 1 of the finals! We had to wait until the Lakers stepped up to play" real mans ball" and defeat the Rockets to get here..... ahh can you say inconsistent?? I am looking forward to the series and in all honesty I think it will be Nuggets in 7! The Lakers have a tough team with almost equal talent...definitely something to give us a little challenge! Nothing like history repeating itself...but this time, the Nuggets will win the West!

Shae

Dearest Shae,

Ha ha ha. Go, L.A.!

Before I go on to Game 1...

...I am very impressed with your knowledge! It always astounds me when people (especially women... hey, I can't help it; I'm a dude) know the history of their teams or the game. Alex English was one awesome scorer. And I didn't think much of the '94 team until they upset the Sonics in the first round. That was actually a strong team of Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, Dikembe Mutombo, Reggie Williams, LaPhonso Ellis, Rodney Rogers, and Robert Pack. I was disappointed they didn't get any further.

Ahh, so you had adopted the Suns as your second team! It must be fun to see you and your sister just talk trash to each other whenever the Nuggets and Suns play each other. Admittedly, I don't talk too much trash with my brother (he's a total Laker-hater) but we just end up analyzing the game like the basketball nerds that we are (ha ha). So we're probably not as fun as you siblings. But, hey, I can keep up with anyone. I do blog, after all, right?

Now on to Game 1... I recapped the game earlier in my blog... and my thoughts are pretty much there (if you want to go back to that entry). It seems like this is going to be one barnburner of a series. What do you think Denver has to do to beat L.A.? Make freethrows? Hold the supporting cast down? Break Kobe's right hand?

Anyway, E-Mail me back. Sorry that #24 treated the Nuggets like a hotel employee. Yeah, I went there.

I predict wedding bells for us.

I decided to read your " interesting" recap of game one of the Western Conference Finals before I emailed back my very "right" recap of the game! I will try my best to not trash talk the Lakers since I am aware that you all need to be handled with velvet gloves! As the world knows.. Laker fans can be big whiners.. especially anyone that sides with Kobe Bryant and his constant cry cry tendancies when another play so much as even comes close enough to breathe on him! LOL! Man up Kobe!!

I am a woman of basketball knowledge! As i stated in the previous interview I grew up as a youngster cheering on the Nuggets! From Alex English to Jalen Rose, I had my times to share in the Nuggets joys and sorrows! By far, this year has been the best combination of great coaching and great players! Even with the loss of game 1 against the Lakers, I am still confident in my boys!

Speaking of game 1... let's talk a little about that! I first want to say that the Nuggets played a good game! definitely not their best, as the we all are aware of the free throw percentage. Quarter one they came out with a BANG!! For one moment I wondered if the Lakers were ever gonna score! I literally had flashbacks of the Houston- Lakers game. Carmelo was on fire with 14 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists..what a way to start the game! I think that shook up the Lakers and they came up in points a bit! Welcome back to the game Lakers. The remainder of the game was so intense.. I was on pins and needles! Watching 2 teams play with such intensity was definitely entertaining! Can't wait for game 2 tonight. We will conquer! All we have to do is maintain our composure, hold Bryant, keep them out of the inside. Tonight will tell!

I am really impressed that she even remembered that Jalen Rose was part of the Nuggets! But, yeah, this was a REALLY fun conversation between a Laker fan and a Nuggets fan. I'd like to thank Shae for participating in this. And you can bet we'll be talking a lot of smack throughout this series. Bring it on, Denver. And Shae.
