2009 Offseason Whirlwind

Man, this week had been filled with some HUGE trades. Let's talk about 'em.

For my thoughts on Richard Jefferson going to San Antonio, check out this entry.

SHAQUILLE O'NEAL TO CLEVELAND and SASHA PAVLOVIC AND BEN WALLACE TO PHOENIX
Okay, so this may possibly be the biggest trade of the offseason... and the people are making me dislike Cleveland all over again because they're pencilling in L.A. and Cleveland for the 2010 NBA Finals. Sure, O'Neal makes them tougher inside but he's not the entire solution. First off, we wonder if they can co-exist. Second, let's see how they mesh. LeBron loves to drive in and there's going to be a 7'1", 350-pound guy inside the paint at all times.

But what really needs fixing is that they need more than just isolation plays. And, in turn, better decision-making. This stuff falls on the coach. Part of what doomed Cleveland is that they took some terrible, terrible shots. LeBron's not the greatest three-point shooter in the world and, at times, he would just chuck one up without warning. His teammates would do the same thing. Basically, while they can score, they weren't an efficient scoring team against Orlando. And while Shaq adds power to the frontline, they still need a wing scorer/slasher that can create. Yeah, I didn't explain that very well when we did our inaugural 8th Seed podcast (check THAT PODCAST out, by the way... and I'm not afraid to admit that I actually sucked it real bad in that cast).

As for Phoenix? Steve Kerr said that they're "a team in transition". That's never good news to the fans. With Amare Stoudemire being thrown around in trade rumors (which I don't get because they can still win 50 games with this team), I just wonder if Phoenix has decided to start all over. What a waste. I would think Steve Nash would want out, too, for a better shot at a title.

For other viewpoints of this trade, check out this Chicks Who Love Hoops blog entry.

VINCE CARTER TO ORLANDO and COURTNEY LEE, TONY BATTIE, AND RAFER ALSTON TO NEW JERSEY
I don't think this trade is as bad as some people make it out to be because I think Orlando is a strong enough team. However, Carter does need to adjust to being the #2 or #3 guy. He certainly fills their need on the wing position but will his head be in it? Carter's also been known to disappear a bit in the postseason. But who knows? While he was pretty good last season, maybe this motivates him even more? A change of scenery? What kind of Vince Carter are we getting here?

As for the Nets' new pieces? Courtney Lee is pretty damn good and it sucks that he had to go. But he and Devin Harris will form a real good (HOT) backcourt. They might peddle Rafer Alston around because I'm sure he doesn't want to be an expensive back-up and Tony Battie is Tony Battie. New Jersey did accomplish freeing up MORE cap space after the shedding of Vinsanity's contract.

I think it works out better for Orlando if they can get Hedo Turkoglu back. Turkoglu was the jack-of-all-trades for Orlando (rebounding, passing, ball-handling, clutch shooting). If he leaves, I think Orlando will really miss him.

JAMAL CRAWFORD TO ATLANTA and SPEEDY CLAXTON AND ACIE LAW IV TO GOLDEN STATE
Well, Crawford was just on his way out of G. State. Don Nelson and Crawford clash a lot. So Jamal had to go. But to get those bit pieces from Atlanta? I thought they could've done better. Where is Golden State going?

Now this represents a little conundrum for Atlanta. They sure as hell got more talented but where will Crawford fit in the equation? Is he willing to come off the bench as a potent sixth man (a la Jason Terry and Manu Ginobili)?

MIKE MILLER AND RANDY FOYE TO WASHINGTON and ETAN THOMAS, DARIUS SONGAILA, OLEXSIY PECHEROV, AND THE 5TH PICK (RICKY RUBIO) TO MINNESOTA
Washington's a talented team that was just decimated with injuries last year. I believe they're a playoff team when healthy (ESPECIALLY Gilbert Arenas). Anyway, they fill their need in outside shooting with Mike Miller. I think Randy Foye's numbers were a bit inflated in Minnesota but he'll be a serviceable back-up guard (maybe even start if Arenas STILL isn't healthy). They are getting a bit crowded in the backcourt, though...

Minnesota just really cleaned house and was lucky to have Ricky Rubio drop to their laps for the 5th pick. But I'm trying to figure out their stance after they drafted Jonny Flynn right after Rubio. Their new players will help in the frontcourt but it's not like they'll set anything on fire.

By the way, the New York Knicks' draft pick, Jordan Hill? She sounds hot.

Spurs Reloaded

Bruce Bowen, Fabricio Oberto, and Kurt Thomas are going to Milwaukee. Who gets to go to San Antonio? RICHARD JEFFERSON. This is all according to Chad Ford from ESPN.

I almost forgot that Jefferson was a Buck as I had associated him with Vince Carter, Jason Kidd, and the rest of the New Jersey Nets. Anyway, the deal is actually good for the Bucks... but BETTER for the Spurs.

For Milwaukee, they get to save money and are now capable of signing one of their restricted free agents in Charlie Villanueva or Ramon Sessions. Maybe both? Maybe even sign a free agent or two? Plus all of them three are in the last year of their contracts. They can try to make a play on the 2010 bonanza.

But then again, there's always the bad news. Who wants to play in Milwaukee?

As for the Spurs? Well, Bowen is dead weight at this point. Kurt Thomas is 36 and Oberto is Oberto. They get an All-Star in Jefferson to fill the 3 spot. When healthy, a line-up of Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Jefferson, and Tim Duncan is potent as hell. Plus they go from grandpas to teenagers in almost one fell swoop. And this is why I never count out the Spurs and this is why every NBA franchise wants to be just like the Spurs. They just simply... reload.

There had been questions, of course, about the Spurs' depth. What? They wouldn't be able to find another Roger Mason (a GREAT find last year)? I'm not saying just fill out the roster with nobodies... but you'd have to think that there are people out there who want to play with these guys and a shot at the title. If they get a serviceable big then the Spurs are REALLY, REALLY dangerous.

Hey, L.A. I don't think them Spurs are playing around next year.

UPDATE 1: Once traded, Bruce Bowen is expected to be released from his contract... and then go back to San Antonio.

UPDATE 2: According to blazersedge on Twitter: Blazers assistant, Monty Williams, said that OBERTO is more likely to be released by the Bucks and reacquired by the Spurs. Check out his tweet here.

UPDATE 3: Chad Ford just went on SportsCenter. It seems like there are no additional tweaks in the trade. I guess we'll see if one of those three guys get released in the future!

UPDATE 4: A new wrinkle was thrown in. The newly acquired Oberto has just been traded to the Detroit Pistons for Amir Johnson. Wonder what will Detroit do with Oberto now...

News Roundup: VC, Kaman, Yao and '09 Draft

Cavemen in Cleveland?!?! Impossible? No. Probable? Maybe.

The world has come a far way now breaking news on Twitter. We now have star players voicing their opinions on everything from Chad Ochocinco wanting to fight Mike Golic to Kevin Love telling the whole world Kevin McHale would not be back with the T'Wolves next year.

It was only a matter of time before something relevant to the Cavs was reported.

Last night Rich Bucher reported, via the awesomeness that Twitter has become (can't figure out if I believe that statement or not), that the Los Angeles Clippers thought they had a deal done for center Chris Kaman 48 hours ago. And the team that it was with was? If you guessed the Cavs, you're right.

*Trying like heck to move one of their bigs, Kaman or Camby. (Moving Zach just beyond possibility.) Cutting costs everywhere

*Clips were confident they had a Kaman deal 48 hrs ago. That changed last night. Camby to OKC is still out there right now.

*Don't have all the details [to Kaman deal]. Best I can tell, it was to Cle, similar to what they were offering for Shaq.

Pretty interesting I must say so myself.

From the looks of it, Ferry is exploring every possible way to improve this team. So far it looks like he's pretty much been offering Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic around to see what's the best deal, in his eyes. Most of the discussions that have been brought up in recent days have been rehashed talks from the deadline but this seems to be someone that Ferry just may be getting interested in (maybe he is and maybe he isn't but we haven't heard his name linked to the Cavs before).

Kaman is a interesting player. After being diagnosed with ADHD when he was 2 years old and being place on medicines such as Ritalin and Adderall, he has since been told (early 2008) he actually does not have ADHD and he was mis-diagnosed. Since then he has been treated for his so called "learning problem" and has seen improvements both on and off the court.

Kaman is a 27 year old center that has progressed season-by-season in becoming a better player. He entered the league as a goofy looking kid from Central Michigan and has since developed a decent all-around game.

Offensively, he's a decent scorer who can score in a multitude of ways. He's got a decent low-post game, is athletic enough to take guys off the dribble and has a good mid-range game that he's developed. He put up 14.6 points per 36 minutes last year, had a USG% of 20.9 and had a TS% of 55.2. (Just for comparison, here's Z's numbers: 17.1 pts/36mins, 23.8 USG%, 52.3 TS%) All decent numbers for a center who only played in 36 games last year but all those numbers were still close to career highs for him, which is kind of scary (in a bad way).

Defensively, he's never been a terrific defender but he isn't a slouch either. Coming in at around 270lbs., he's got surprising athleticism that helps him to be a pretty good rebounder and shot-blocker.

So what's the problem? Well for one he's due $33.9 million over the next 3 years. While he is a solid center and isn't too old, he isn't worth that type of money. And with GMs worried about 2010 cap space, taking on a contract like Kaman's isn't exactly something most GMs would want to do.

The second problem is that he's only played in 77 games the past two seasons. While he's stayed relatively healthy previous to those two years in the NBA and college, some worry about whether or not this is him beginning to break down or whether this just may be a little kink in the system.

Vinsanity Talks Resume

Ferry's been quite active in trying to rehash old talks from the trade deadline and from previous years and this time it's with a guy we all know too well: Vince Carter.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reported that the Cavs and Nets have resumed talks about Carter.

The Nets and Cleveland Cavaliers have discussed Vince Carter(notes)
again, sources said. As financial losses mount for New Jersey's
ownership, it appears more likely that the Nets will try to move Carter
and the two years and $33.6 million left on his deal. The Nets would
have to take Ben Wallace(notes) and Sasha Pavlovic(notes) in return.

But then the New York Post reported something different. (keep in mind it's Peter Vecsey)

With that in mind, contrary to a Yahoo! report, the Nets have had
no conversation with the Cavaliers since mid-February regarding Vince Carter for anybody, much less Sasha Pavlovic and Ben Wallace, who talked about retiring but is not about to forfeit $14M.

 Zero!

Would Ratner love to be save $33M, which is what Carter is owed
over the next two seasons? No doubt. But only if the Nets got to keep
his 20-point average, sprinkled with plenty of 30s and a few 40s. Or
could get a cheaper clone who, don't forget, also must donate five
assists and five rebounds per outing.

Aren't many of those featured creatures roaming around the NBA
tundra . . . at least who can be had. Carter probably can be had --
that's why the Cavs, Spurs and Blazers all thought seriously or talked
deliriously about getting him just prior to last February's trade
deadline -- but not for rotten bananas.

Want Carter? Gotta give to get! And at this moment, the Nets are engaged in no substantive trade talks.

 Zero!

While Carter is still talented and still has game, it doesn't seem too
smart to spend your best trading chips on someone who doesn't fill any
of your biggest needs at this moment. Would he be a nice piece?
Definitely. But not right now with our needs, our assets and with the
money he's still owed.

It looks like Ferry is doing his due diligence in checking out every player he's ever been interested in.

It'll be interesting to see what the Wallace-Pavlovic deal eventually brings in.

Cavs Keying On 3 Guys To Trade Up For?

While the Cavs are probably interested in more than 3 players in trading up for, it was interesting to hear who Brian Windhorst mentioned in the Plain Dealer on Sunday

The chatter in the league is that the Cavs are very interested in
moving up in the draft. They have been talking to teams just outside of
the lottery (starting with the 15th pick) down into the low 20s.

As they look to move up, the Cavs might be targeting three players who most certainly will not be there at 30.

One is Ty Lawson, the dynamic and speedy point guard from
North Carolina. Though he's small and that doesn't exactly fit what the
Cavs need with undersized guards Mo Williams and Delonte West, Lawson
has proven to be a winner and an excellent decision maker for the
national champs. He's been overlooked by some teams and the Cavs love
to find undervalued players in the draft. They feel Daniel Gibson and
Darnell Jackson fit that same mold.

Another is Sam Young, an experienced wingman who proved to
be a strong defender at Pittsburgh while playing in a power conference
(Big East). Ferry is very close to the Pitt program and has been
keeping an eye on Young for the past several years. Young fits the
Cavs' need for size on the perimeter.

The last is Earl Clark, a tall power forward from
Louisville who can play a little inside and out. The Cavs spent an
extended period interviewing him at the Chicago Draft Combine. At 6-10
from a power program, he also fits a need.

Because the Cavs have shown a willingness to spend money and some teams
are operating deep in the red, there has been a belief that the Cavs
will look to purchase a first-round pick. Teams are allowed to spend up
to $3 million to get them and, as a result, that is almost always the
price. But do not assume the Cavs will definitely pull the trigger.
They might be able to find better uses for the money. If they are going
to buy a pick, the second round is more likely. The Cavs might be able
to find a sleeper in there, especially between their picks of 30 and
46. Last season the Cavs spent $300,000 to buy the rights to Sasha Kahn
out of the second round and that might be the type of check they prefer
to write to get another player in this draft.

All interesting players in their own right, the best news is that Ferry and Co. is looking very hard to trade up in the draft. The thing that they need to be most careful though is that the draft is historically not very productive outside the top-10 and the talent is pretty much the same from 11-22. In a weak draft like this, especially, the Cavs also need to be careful in who they're choosing to trade up for.

As far as teams that may be willing to move down and/or out of the draft, there's been a lot of rumors out there.

Detroit has been rumored to be offering #15 and Amir Johnson for cap space. Atlanta has been said they're offering #19 and Speedy Claxton for cap space. The Phoenix Suns, #14, are always seem willing to move their picks for money. The cash-strapped Charlotte Bobcats at #12 may be forced to sell their pick with ownership problems. The Nets have been said to be very active in trade talks involving their pick. The Hornets seem willing to sell their pick with tough economic times giving their franchise a hard time. The T'Wolves have 3 picks in the 1st round and seem willing to trade away one or maybe two of their picks. The list goes on and on.

The good news is that a lot of teams 12-22 seem willing to sell/trade their pick(s) if need be. The other good news is that there are very little buyers (basically the Cavs, Blazers, Celtics, Spurs and Rockets) and a lot of sellers.

Let's hope Ferry has that San Antonio draft eye (hasn't really proven whether or not he has it yet) and can snag a player that will develop into a nice core piece down the road.

Additional Players In For A Workout

In an update to my original post on who the Cavs had in for a draft workout, it's been listed on HoopsReport.com that the Cavs have had more players in for a workout. Here's the additional names that weren't mentioned previously.

Eric Maynor (VCU, PG)
Jimmy Baron (Rhode Island, G)
Chase Budinger (Arizona, G/F)
Paul Harris (Syracuse, G/F)
Patrick Beverely (Ukraine, G)
Wayne Ellington (North Carolina, G)
DaJuan Summers (Georgetown, F)
Lester Hudson (UT-Martin, G)
Austin Daye (Gonzaga, F)
Lee Cummard (BYU, G)
Wesley Matthews (Marquette, G/F)
Danny Green (North Carolina, G/F)
Jeff Teague (Wake Forest, G)
Nick Calathes (Florida, G)
Taj Gibson (USC, PF)
Ahmad Nivins (St. Joseph's, F/C)
Ryan Toolson (Utah Valley State, G)
Luke Nevill (Utah, C)
Josh Shipp (UCLA, G)
Jeremy Pargo (Gonzaga, G)
Dionte Christmas (Temple, G)
Taylor Griffin (Oklahoma, F)
Paul Delaney (UAB, G)
Dar Tucker (DePaul, G)
AJ Price (UCONN, G)
Stefon Jackson (UTEP, G/F)

Yao + 2010 Free Agency + Chinese Investors = Cavs?

It's doubtful anyone bought into Yao Ming coming to Cleveland in 2010 with Chinese investors buying ownership in the team, but Yao squashed any chance of that rumor being true on Friday.

Rockets center Yao Ming has called a possible move to Cleveland an
"unknown" amid rumors that the Cavaliers' new Chinese part owners want
to sign him.

In a recent interview with his hometown Shanghai TV station, Yao
said he continued to have "much affection" for the Houston Rockets, the
team that took him in the first round of the 2002 draft and with whom
he has played all six of his NBA seasons.

While it could conceivably happen in 2010, don't get any hopes up.

And finally: 3 more rumor filled days until June 25th comes and all of this madness ends, but just for a short time until Free Agency starts up July 1st.

But until then.....Adios Amigos!

Bulls Looking To Move Up In Draft?

A recent report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports suggests that the Bulls are looking at trading their 16th and 26th picks to the New Jersey Nets for the 11th pick in this year's draft. I'm not sure if that's the best idea, since they could probably get two serviceable picks with what they have now. The 11th pick could get them a better player, but I doubt whoever they would get would end up being a significant improvement over the combined package of the 16th and 26th picks. The Bulls may have targeted a specific player that they don't want to risk missing at the 16th pick though, so I wouldn't be surprised if this deal takes place. Whether it happens or not makes little difference in the grand scheme of things, but if the Bulls saw something from someone that they felt could not be passed up, then moving up would give them a better chance of getting their man.

Further down in the same article, Wojnarowski states the obvious in mentioning that the Bulls are lokking to move Jerome James and his $6 million player option so they can free up cap space to re-sign Ben Gordon. I'm all for making that happen, but I doubt that there are many (any?) teams that would want to bring James on board, and we would have to throw in something (most likely a pick) to unload him.

Needs and Assets: Atlantic Division

Now that the season is over and we're a week away from the draft, the real fun begins. We've entered the time where speculation takes over. The Trade Machine gets fired up and free agents jump ship to move on to greener (read: more lucrative) pastures.

All the speculation and rumor mongering in the world is nothing without first identifying what teams need, what assets they have to move and whether or not they have the available cap to bring in a big name free agent (and whether or not they're willing to use said cap space).

Over the next few days we'll be giving an overview of each division and what each team will be trying to do this offseason. We'll start where rumors run rampant: the Atlantic Division.

Boston Celtics
Draft Pick(s): 58th
Free Agents: Stephon Marbury, Leon Powe, Glen Davis & Mikki Moore
Team Needs: Depth at PF/C & back-up PG
Tradeable Assets: Ray Allen has an expiring contract this season making him movable, and there have been rumors that the Celtics are shopping Rajon Rondo.

Any time a star player goes down, a team will have a hard time replacing him, and moving a bench player into the starting line-up will wreak havoc on a team's depth. This was abundantly clear with the injury to Kevin Garnett. His knee kept him out of the playoffs, and Boston was dependant on the production of Big Baby, Leon Powe and Mikki Moore. Davis and Powe filled in admirably for Garnett, but they could only do so much to match his intensity and production. All three back-up power forwards/centers are free agents heading into the offseason and Garnett's health is a big question mark.

Boston's biggest problem in addressing potential issues is their cap space (or lack thereof). They'll be significantly over the cap and reliant on brining players in using their mid-level exception. Their only other option is to make a trade.

There have been soom rumblings of a potential trade that would send Rajon Rondo to the Kings for Jason Thompson and Sacramento's fourth pick. This would solve one problem at back-up PF and create another at point guard. That would leave them without one of the better point guards in the league with no viable back-up to take his place. In that scenario, the Celtics would likely look to use the fourth pick on one of the available point guards in the draft. It would appear the Celtics don't have the depth at either position to make that deal.

Something Boston should consider is moving Ray Allen. His contract runs through the end of this upcoming season which makes him an asset to any team trying to shed salary for next season's free agent class. Allen showed he still has some bullets left in the chamber and has the outside shooting that any team would love to have. They could definitely exchange Allen for good, young players, and should consider it for long-term success. The problem is Ray Allen was Boston's best player in the playoffs this season, and moving him would be a big risk for the upcoming season if Garnett is healthy.

Philadelphia 76ers
Draft Pick(s): 17th
Free Agents: Andre Miller, Donyell Marshall, Theo Ratliff, Kareem Rush & Royal Ivey
Team Needs: PG & back-up C
Tradeable Assets: Thaddeus Young & Lou Williams make too little to get anything of equal value, and Andre Iguodala & Elton Brand make too much to move.

The Sixers went wild this past offseason locking up Andre Iguodala and Elton Brand into long-term deals. Those two are obviously their nucleus guys around which Philadelphia will build. Brand dealt with injuries that just so happened to coincide with the Sixers working their way back into contention in the East. So questions remain heading into this offseason about whether Brand is a good fit with the other players on this team (i.e. Iguodala, Sam Dalembert, Lou Williams, Thad Young, etc.).

The Sixers have already addressed two of their most pressing needs: coaching and outside shooting. Eddie Jordan is a good coach. He deserved another shot, and should make the most of it with this club. Philly also brought in Jason Kapono, one of the best statistical three-point shooters in the league, in exchange for Reggie Evans. Williams, Young and Willie Green just aren't consistent enough from three-point range, and the Sixers will need good spot-up shooters to compliment Brand. Brand demands double-teams, so he'll need reliable outside shooting to keep defenses honest and give him the ability to go to work down low. Kapono should give the Philly offense a legitimate deep threat.

The biggest concern this offseason will be the potential departure of Andre Miller to free agency. Miller was the driving force for the Sixers after the Brand injury averaging nearly 17 points, 6.6 assists and 5 rebounds after the All-Star break. He has been the veteran leader that a young team like Philly desperately needs and other teams would love to have. Miller is 33, so there could be concerns giving out anything more than a 3-year deal. There certainly will be at least one team willing to give him a contract along those lines, and the Sixers may not be willing to match it.

The Sixers may decide to hand the PG duties to Lou Williams, but this would be a mistake. Williams is a scorer and exciting player, but he just isn't the guy to run a team. If they let Miller walk, look for Philadelphia to address the point guard situation in the draft especially if Ty Lawson falls to them at 17.

New Jersey Nets
Draft Pick(s): 11th
Free Agents: Stromile Swift & Maurice Ager
Team Needs: SF, PF & back-up everything
Tradeable Assets: Bobby Simmons' albatross contract expires at the end of the season and could be used. The Nets also have an abundance of young players with moveable contracts.

The Nets have a talented pieces especially at PG, SG and C, but they need to improve their depth and the forward positions. Yi Jianlian has skills and could develop into something special, but he is an inconsistent shooter and isn't a dependable post player. Bobby Simmons is nowhere near worth the money he is being paid, but he is a very good outside shooter. He is the type of player that should be brought off the bench, but he is forced to start on this club. Josh Boone fell out of grace getting 10 fewer minutes per game last season despite fantastic defensive Per 36 numbers.

It may seem strange reading that one of the Nets' needs is SF when there are 4 already on the roster, but all of those players seem to be back-ups. The one player that could make that point moot is Ryan Anderson. Anderson showed some growth as the season progressed and seemed to be the guy late in his rookie year. He may be able to develop into a legit starter.

The real need is at power forward. Yi has the length to play the position, but he doesn't rebound like a seven-footer. Eduardo Najera is a roster filler at this point of his career. The problem is, outside of Blake Griffin, most of the power forwards in this year's draft are projects or have a lot of question marks. DeJuan Blair should be available at 11 and could be a good fit. They also could look to move Bobby Simmons' expiring contract in exchange for a PF and take a prototypical point guard in the draft to spell Devin Harris or run a small lineup. Outside of those options, the Nets don't have the cap to get a game-changer at the position; they could bring in an MLE guy.

Toronto Raptors
Draft Pick(s): 9
Free Agents: Shawn Marion, Anthony Parker, Joey Graham, Jorge Garbajosa & Jake Voskuhl
Team Needs: SG, SF, & C
Assets: Chris Bosh is very moveable at this point, but do the Raptors want to do that?

The Raptors have maneuvered themselves into a very favorable cap position. Shawn Marion's $17 million is now off the books, and that gives them a lot of wiggle room this offseason. Unfortunately they also have a lot of needs to address with that cap space. Toronto has about $12 million available to spend on free agents and will need to use it on multiple positions.

The biggest needs are at the wing positions with Marion and Anthony Parker heading into free agency and Joey Graham a restricted free agent. Compaound that with the Jason Kapono trade, and the Raptors are left without a single SG or SF on the roster. I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure a team can't win with only point guards or power forwards on their roster.

Expect them to try and re-sign Parker and give Graham his qualifying offer. There shouldn't be a bidding war for those two players, and the Raptors should be able to keep them without breaking their bank. Marion will go where the money is, but Toronto might not be the team that wants to spend it on him. Center will be the toughest position to fill. Andrea Bargnani is still developing and could become a very good player, but his lack of rebounding is worrisome. Bargnani was significantly better as a starter last season, so Toronto could be looking for a back-up that makes up for his rebounding numbers.

Demar Derozan seems like the pick for the Raptors if he falls to them. He's raw, but he could develop into something special. He also addresses a need at both SG and possibly SF. Derozan may not help the Raptors immediately, but he could be a project that pays off for them. If they're looking for more immediate impact, the Raptors could consider Gerald Henderson. Henderson is more polished and older than Derozan. He's also a much better outside shooter and could be a full time starter before the season is up. If another team talks themselves into taking Derozan before the Raptors, Henderson wouldn't be a booby prize.

New York Knicks
Draft Pick(s): 8th
Free Agents: Chris Wilcox, Nate Robinson & David Lee
Team Needs: PG, SG & C
Assets: A lot of expiring contracts, but they'll need those to go crazy in the free agent market next offseason.

The Knicks have two goals this offseason: 1. Re-sign fan favorites Nate Robinson and David Lee and 2. Hold on to as much available cap space as they can for next offseason.

It would be a PR nightmare to lose Lee or Robinson at this point, so it would appear that the Knicks are going to bring back both of their restricted free agents. They have no cap room available this offseason to spend on other free agents, so they'll have to be okay with bringing back the slam dunk champ and their all-hustle guy. Both flourished under Mike D'Antoni (what else is new?), so they will be cashing in. On the bright side, they are both restricted free agents, so New York can match any offer.

They do have the ability to move some expiring deals to bring in more talent since they are severly lacking in that department, but don't expect it. The Knicks have been building for the free agent bonanza next season and shouldn't jepordize that. It would make more sense for the Knicks to use Lee or Robinson in a sign-and-trade scenario if they really wanted to bring in new blood.

No offense to Chris Duhon, but he isn't the prototypical Mike D'Antoni point guard. The draft will be the best place to address that issue with a glut of very good point guards declaring. Stephen Curry, Jrue Holiday, Brandon Jennings and Jonny Flynn could all be available for the Knicks to take at 8. There is also a possibility that New York could trade up and make a run at Ricky Rubio. No matter where they end up picking, the Knicks should end up with a new point guard.

NBA Outsider Mock Draft: New Jersey Nets Select DeJuan Blair

NBA Outsider is hosting a 2009 NBA mock draft, where bloggers from all over come together in an attempt to project the draft results that will take place June 25th .

Joey Whelan from DraftExpress picks for the New Jersey Nets at at No. 11. The Nets are looking for defense and rebounding out of the physical DeJuan Blair from Pittsburgh. Follow the mock draft here.

Net's team president Rod Thorn wants a moose. DeJuan Blair is the closest thing he will find in the 2009 draft class. There will be those who scoff at this pick, it is inevitable and it is expected, but it is safe and smart. Sure Earl Clark and James Johnson are the sexier picks; they have more upside and bring far more versatility to the table than Blair could ever hope to, but they also have much further to fall. If anything, Blair brings a great deal more certainty to the table than any of the other forward prospects that are still available at this point in the draft.

If the last several years have taught us anything it's that the one statistic that almost always carries over from college to the NBA is rebounding. Look at the list of undersized bigs who dominated the glass during their days of higher learning and have continued to be valuable assets at the professional level: Jason Maxiell, Paul Millsap, Carlos Boozer, Leon Powe, David Lee and Carl Landry. All of these players were workhorses in college who made a living off of their strength, hustle and propensity for window wiping. For a guy like Blair who rebounded the ball at one of the highest rates (18.1 rebounds per 40 minutes) anyone has ever seen in the modern college game, particularly the fact that he did it in the Big East, there isn't a question that he will continue to be a solid force on the glass at the next level.

There were many questions about Blair's conditioning once the college season came to an end, but in workouts the Pitt big man has appeared much trimmer and clearly has put in a tremendous amount of effort to improve his physique. This slimmer Blair has eased a lot of the concern that teams had about his knees and how they would hold up at the next level.

The next major issue for Blair is his height. He stands at just 6-6 in shoes, but with a massive 7-2 wingspan he compares very favorably to players like Jason Maxiell and Paul Millsap who have already established themselves in the NBA. For further evidence of how Blair is able to combat his height, just go back and watch tape of the 22-point 23-rebound game that he hung on Hasheem Thabeet in February.

Blair will never be a superstar in the NBA, it isn't in the cards for him. But for a team like the Nets, who let's be honest were soft on the boards last season, he represents a nice addition who will help give them a little more bulk and toughness inside. Blair isn't going to have to get many touches in order to put points on the board either, he is more than capable of making his living on garbage points around the offensive glass and letting the Vince Carters and Devin Harris's of the world take their shots. Pair Blair up with blossoming rookie Brook Lopez and New Jersey could be looking at their frontcourt of the future.

Tyreke Evans: Is He Worth Trading Up For?

Yesterday, ESPN's Chad Ford posted a news release telling us that Celtics executive Danny Ainge was interested in Tyreke Evans, a strong guard fresh off of his first year at Memphis University.

Evans, who will be highly sought after before, during, and after Draft day, has been projected to be picked early in the first round. Some have him as high as the fifth and sixth pick.

Ainge has not yet commented on the news release, but there have been multiple trade rumors swirling around including the C's and the Draft; one even suggesting that the front office could make a move to obtain the second pick, currently owned by Memphis' hometown team, the Grizzles. With that being said, you know that Boston is watching prospects and possibilities to move up closely.

Along with the Grizzles, teams such as the Bulls, Nets, Pistons, Kings, Thunder, and Wizards are teams the Celtics are targeting. The highest pick is owned by the Grizzles (2nd).

But is Evans worth giving away some players to move up? Let's check it out.
