The Fast Break: Pacers Updates 6/31

Hey guys, welcome to the The Fast Break of Pacers Updates today! I'm Josh Dhani and let's see what we have in for us today.

Taiwan Game Tickets SOLD OUT

That's right, you read it. The pre-season game against the Denver Nuggets in Taiwan has apparently been sold out as I found out from the recent IC Cold Links post from IndyCornrows.com.

You can also find it all right here. But seriously, who gives a freaking damn about a pre-season game (laughing).

Bird "Wants 'Em Back"

Who does he want back: Jarrett Jack and Josh McRoberts. The Pacers extended their qualifying offers of these two soon-to-be restricted free agents, Indy Cornrows reported.

From Conrad Brunner of Caught in the Web:

"We want 'em back," said Bird. "We know what we can do with Josh but Jarrett's still out there. We have to wait and see if anybody puts an offer in on him. I'm sure there's a lot of teams interested but with the economy the way it is, I don't see a lot of movement."

I really hope Indy manages to get these guys. McRoberts may be an easy one but Jack may be a pretty tough and sneaky one, as Bird said in the quote above these letters. We'll see what'll happen, hopefully both can stay.

Talking To Chicks Who Love Hoops (Stephanie K)

Welcome to Talking To Chicks Who Love Hoops. We all know female sports fans are a hot commodity for us dudes. Maybe not as rare as we think but us guys always think they're inferior when it comes to sports knowledge. Well, in this feature, I talk to them about the NBA and check what goes through their heads. And I ask them about everything else in an attempt to make this more fun and versatile instead of just straight sports. And watch out; these chicks might know more than you guys. Hell, they might even know more than yours truly.

PAST "TALKING TO CHICKS WHO LOVE HOOPS" ENTRIES

I wonder if it gets embedded in you when you're already at the game while you're not even born. That seems to be the case for the talented and beautiful Stephanie K. Stephanie K is not only a huge fan of the NBA but also an aspiring singer. We talked about the NBA, her beloved Detroit Pistons, and a bit about her singing as well. I guess she didn't take me seriously when I offered to do a duet! Dammit.

And right before I was going to put up this entry, we got breaking news that Michael Curry was fired as head coach of her beloved Pistons. So at the very last minute, I got Stephanie's reaction on that as well.

Yeah, my font is in purple... and her font is in blue.

Dear Stephanie,

It's my fault for not E-Mailing you sooner about this but I'll admit that it's been a pretty awesome NBA week. I was stoked that the Lakers won the title, yes, but, man, I can't wait for the title defense.

Anyway, I know you root for them Pistons. And I know from your site that you're a huge Chauncey Billups fan. So do you now also root for the Denver Nuggets? They had one hell of a playoff run and I don't see any reason why they can't do this again next year.

So have you lived in Michigan all your life? And I take it you grew up watching the Pistons? Tell me how you got into it and tell me your huge NBA fandom. Because you told me on Twitter that you are like... the biggest fan ever. And your boys beat the Lakers in '04. Is that your favorite NBA moment ever?

Also... I'd like to get your thoughts on all the trades that have gone down... and how do you think the Pistons are going to do next season. Give me some of that NBA knowledge, girlfriend!

By the way, you are an outstanding singer. I saw the vid where you sang the national anthem at The Palace of Auburn Hills. I hope you continue to go places with your voice. I love your song, It's You. Maybe you can write me a song sometime. Or maybe we can do a duet together! Yeah!

See? I pay attention!

Rey-Rey

I'll make love to you! Like you want me to...

...uhhh, okay. Moving on to her reply...

To start, I'm not ashamed to admit that I have gotten into many intense verbal battles over the years defending my beloved Pistons in bars, sports books, arenas, etc. Bad, great, terrible (see: the teal colors era), they will always be my favorite team. I'm a hometown girl and have been attending games (front row season tickets) since I resided in my mother's womb. And that's not a joke...

This year was a tough one to swallow. After 6 straight conference finals appearances, a first round sweeping was absolutely devastating. Chauncey Billups, our captain, leader and MVP during our championship (and then some), has been MY MVP since his days at Colorado. I was thrilled to see him drafted 3rd back in '97, and always knew he would develop into the incredible player he has become today. On and off the court, he is a class act. I am so proud of him and what he has accomplished in just one season with the Denver Nuggets. It truly shows how one player can so greatly impact a team. They are only going to get better in the years to come. Allen Iverson on the other hand? Ugh...selfish, difficult and egotistical are not adjectives I look for in describing an NBA allstar. Despite his individual accomplishments, he has no reason to be so conceited. ONE trip to the finals...ONE game won...does not a champion make.

Although I was alive and present during the Bad Boy era, I was too young to fully appreciate the excitement. My favorite Pistons moment was just before the championship-clinching Game 5 of the 2004 NBA finals...I remember Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight" blaring throughout the Palace in the dim lighting before our team took the court. I turned to my brother, another Pistons fanatic and said, "We're doing this tonight." And we did. I got to go on the court during the ceremony. Unforgettable.

Fast forwarding to present times, I am not happy with the Pistons 1st Round pick in the 2009 draft. Austin Daye is pretty much Tayshaun Prince #2. Despite the fact that GM Joe Dumars is happy with PG Rodney Stuckey and SG and Rip Hamilton running the backcourt, I am a firm believer that the best available player should be chosen upon your turn in the draft. Hell, even if you don't want them...package them in some kind of deal. Drue Holiday and Ty Lawson could have been used as some intense bait. Picks in Round 2 are always hit or miss...so I won't even touch on those. But a swedish bleached blonde dude with the 39th pick? I just don't know...and after Joe D's many draft busts (Darko Milicic, Amir Johnson, Rodney White, Walter Sharpe)...I have my doubts.

It was a pretty boring draft in my opinion. Everyone knew Blake was going #1. Ricky Rubio could be a Pistol Pete in the making. But you never can tell...

Despite the draft, the major buzz around the NBA is currently the trade of Shaq to the Cavs in exchange for Sasha Pavlovic, Ben Wallace, cash and a future pick. Just 11 days after Kobe proved he had the talent and leadership skills to win a championship without Shaq manning the front court, LeBron and the Cavs have done just the opposite...hoping Shaq will be the missing piece of their championship puzzle...as he was for Dwyane Wade in 2006. However, at 37 years old, Shaq's mobility, motivation and agility have all diminished greatly. He was not the answer for the Suns. It will be interesting to see if he can make a difference for the Cavs, who were manhandled by the Magic in the ECF.

Moreover, the trade of Vince Carter to the Orlando Magic is also intriguing. If Vince is willing to take a backseat and let the young Dwight Howard remain the leader of the team, the Magic could be even MORE dangerous this upcoming season. With a healthy Vinsanity, his explosive scoring could help them over the final hump to gloryland.

AND I HAVE A QUESTION...what happened to Jermaine O'Neal?!

I took that as a regular question. I normally pick up on those rhetorical ones, too. Dammit.

I know Jermaine O'Neal picked up his player option to return to Miami for about $23 million. It's really too bad that he keeps getting hurt.

Yeah, I keep looking back at the 2004 NBA Finals and thought it was one of the biggest upsets ever. At least, on paper. But that finals loss really broke the Lakers that time. It caused a domino effect within L.A. but, hey, it didn't take THAT long for them to get back, did it?

I know it's too early to say... but who would you pencil in right now for next season's Finals? Lakers/Cavs? Spurs/Celtics? Nuggets/Pistons? Ha ha.

Also... which trade you think will make the most impact? I think Orlando wins if they get Turkoglu back... but I highly doubt it at this point. Everyone's getting paid big in Orlando. I don't think Cleveland got that much better... and the Spurs look scary yet again by adding Richard Jefferson.

And where do you see Detroit going next year? Are they going to sign a huge free agent, ya think?

Let's end it with a personal question: how was it performing the National Anthem in front of the Palace crowd?

Good luck on your singing career!

Rey-Rey

Someday, I would love for L.A. to get revenge on Detroit. Detroit's beaten L.A. in their last two Finals meetings.

You KNOW I DID. I may be small, but I'm might strong...and fast..and I'm a kickboxer ;)

I guess the Jermaine O'Neal question was a rhetorical one...he has just been mighty off the radar for the salary that he is gettng.

I was really surprised to hear that the Celtics are shopping Rajon Rondo. It seems that with a healthy Kevin Garnett, they could've made another deep run in the playoffs. Rondo must be developing one hell of an ego if they wish to dismantle such a talented core so quickly.

As I said in my last email, I don't think the Shaq trade will improve the Cavs. It didn't work for the Suns...and Shaq is only going to get older, slower and less motivated in the coming months.

Darko to the Knicks? HA...they are asking for it...that's like throwing a kid in a candy store. It's not a secret that the guy loves to party...and "The City That Never Sleeps" will only fuel his late night shenanigans.

I will be sad to see Rip leave Detroit. With Rasheed undoubtedly off the books this year, he is one of the last remaining members of the 2004 championship. Oh how time flies...

However, if the Pistons do look to move Rip, I hope that they can land Ben Gordon on the free agency market. The former UConn Husky is not only a great scorer...he's a great SHOOTER as well...a rare combination nowadays. And, as we all learned in the Bulls outstanding playoff series against the Celtics this April, he is reliable and dependable in crunch time. With the absence of Sheed, the Pistons will need a strong presence on the inside...capable of scoring and defending. Boozer is an option...but he has had his problems with injuries. Only time will tell...but I hope they can spend this money wisely...otherwise the trade of Chauncey Billups was even MORE of a disaster than we could have ever imagined.

2010 Finals...well, wishful thinking is ALWAYS that the Pistons will be there. However, it looks likes we are in the midst of somewhat of a rebuilding phase. I look to see the Lakers defending their championship if they can hold onto Trevor Ariza (who could demand a hefty contract after his impressive contributions these past playoffs) and Lamar Odom. In the East...Orlando can make it back even if they don't manage to resign Hedo IF Vince Carter fills in his shoes. The Cavs are always dangerous because LeBron could defeat most teams even if he had to play against them 5 on 1. A healthy Celtics team could make it back to the finals...especially if Glen "Big Baby" Davis keeps hitting games winners...and he lays off the ice cream and keeps his weight below 540 lbs.

I get to sing the anthem for the Pistons at least once a month during the season at the Palace. It is one of my places to perform...getting to combine singing with basketball?! What more could I ask for?! Heaven on earth...

And one last thing...

Michael Curry just got canned by the Pistons. I wanna get your reaction to that, please.

Well...I was never really too thrilled to have Michael Curry taking over the head coaching position for the Pistons. He did, after all, have just one year of assistant coaching under his belt. He was biting off more than he could chew...before he entered the picture, the Pistons had been to the ECF 6 years in a row and were always considered a force to be reckoned with in the East. He had to have assumed that anything less than a conference finals appearance would have been deemed a failure. And in the world of professional sports, the coach is often the first to be blamed. As the former head of the Players' Association, he was always a well respected player as well as a supportive teammate. Still, I don't know that the players looked at him as an authority figure...it's hard to listen to a guy whom you used to call your friend order you around. After hearing rumors of dissention between Rip Hamilton and Michael Curry, I wonder if this is somewhat of a move on Joe Dumars' behalf to placate the very publicly unhappy Hamilton. Is Rip not on the trading block after all? Only time will tell...

I mentioned a few months ago in our podcast that Curry seemed to have lost his team midway through the season. And I guess I was correct. Wonder who Detroit's going to hire now?

Anyway, it was a BLAST talking to Stephanie about her Pistons and the rest of the league. And we also talked about her singing career in a bit. Check out her web site at www.stephaniekmusic.com. And to preview her music, go check out her MySpace! Her first national album, Good Intentions, is due for release this fall under a division of Universal Records. This woman is very talented. Support her music! Especially if you're a fellow Detroit Pistons fan! I'd like to thank Stephanie for her participation in this feature.

Two Areas The Spurs Need To Address Via Free Agency

The NBA Draft is next week and though the Spurs do not have a First-Round pick, they do have 3 Second-Round Picks at 37, 51, and 53. Knowing this, there might not be someone available late in the draft to address the Spurs current needs -- youth, Center and Shooting Guard.

However there are some decent Free Agents this summer the Spurs can realistically acquire. Aside from the obvious, youth, youth and more youth, Spurs do need a decent Center and an athletic 2-guard.

Let's face it the Spurs do not have a decent Center. Ian is constantly injured and unproven on the NBA level, Bonner loves to shoot 3's but does not rebound or have an inside game, Oberto is crap, and Thomas is servicable but you have to ask how much more does he have in the tank at his age.

As for the athletic shooting-guard again this is an area the Spurs need to address. Finley is ready for the retirement home, Manu's ankle is unreliable, and Hill is young and might be a good player if Pop simply plays him more. We saw in the regular season and the playoffs the Spurs did not have someone to create his own shot aside from Manu, when healthy.

So let's look at a few free agents who could come into the fold and contribute.

Center:
Zaza Pachulia -- Hawks (Unrestricted). This guy is tough, young, can board and score. He does not back down, ask KG, and can be the "banger" the Spurs need to play along side Duncan. Pachulia is a big part of the Hawks recent success, helping them grab the number 4 seed in the East. His 2008-2009 avergaes were: 6.2 points and 5.7 rebounds. May not seem much but toughness is something the Spurs need in the paint.

Anderson Varejao -- Cavs (Unrestricted). Might not be out of the realm of possiblity for the Spurs to target him. Like Pachulia, this guy is physical, active in the paint, young and can board. His 2008-2009 avergaes were: 8.6 points and 7.2 rebounds. This is exactly what the Spurs need -- someone to rebound! Plays decent defense and can be a great "energizer" player.

Shooting Guard:
Dahntay Jones -- Nuggets (Unrestricted). Hustle, defense, young and can shoot the three however needs to work on creating his shot. In the playoffs proved he can play defense against the Lakers. Will be an ideal role player for the Spurs. His 2008-2009 avergaes were: 5.4 points and 1 assist. Now those averages may not grab you but he can be the defensive 2-guard to play the likes of Kobe, Josh Howard, and Wade. "People have seen that the one thing Dahntay has is a toughness about him," said TNT/YES analyst Mike Fratello, who coached Jones for 2 1/2 years in Memphis. He also has an reputation as "dirty" so I guess he fits right in the Spurs system.

Von Wafer -- Rockets (Unrestricted). Young, energizer, quick, and is ready. He stepped up when T-Mac went down and provided some offensive punch in the playoff series against the Blazers and Lakers. He has the ability to create his own shot but needs to improve his defense. His 2008-2009 avergaes were: 9.7 points and 1.1 assists.

Pachulia, Varejao, Jones and Wafer all would provide the Spurs with youth, defense, rebounds and scoring. Aside from Varejao they won't break the Spurs' bank. More importantly, they give the Spurs a shot in the arm.

Enjoy Kobe & Co., Because You Won't Be Kissing That Golden Ball Next Year

The final minutes wound down at the Amway Arena last night as the Los Angeles Lakers finally achieved the goal they had been waiting to reach for about a year now.

God I wanted to punch Pau Gasol in the face so bad. No joke, he looked as smug as the guy on the highway who thinks he's cool because he has his windows down when it's pouring rain. Either that or he actually stepped out of his vehicle and stood in the rain, because the Spaniard was nothing short of soaked with champagne or whatever they spray around that locker room.

Sorry I just had to do that. Back to the topic on hand.

And as a group of Magic fans slowly got up and left the building, they felt disappointed. They felt devastated. But not Kobe Bryant. Bryant looked up and, in a mental picture, waved goodbye to those heartbroken Magic fans. Looked up, and smiled. He could feel that sweet sense of victory. He felt overcome as his body began to go numb.

When he was handed the Finals MVP trophy, he raised it high in the air, acknowledging the fact that he was literally "on top of the basketball world." There was no Kevin Garnett postgame entertainment. There was nothing that we'll remember about Bryant's celebration. But for the Black Mamba, it's a moment he'll never forget.

It was the first time he'd won a championship as the star. People always referred back to Kobe's three previous championships as a player when arguing that he was the best in the game. But Kobe knew that it wasn't worth recognizing as much as people had though it had been.

Why? Because all those other championships were won BESIDE Shaq. ALONGSIDE of Derek Fisher. WITH THE SUPPORT of Big Shot Rob.

Bryant knew that he had MUST win one by himself for his own satisfaction. Sure he was and still is seen as one of the greatest by fellow players and peers. But he wouldn't have considered himself a true winner if he hadn't gotten one on his own.

When Kobe kissed that golden ball, that Larry O'Brian trophy, he finally tasted that sweet sensation he had been desiring for his whole career. He had won a ring for his own gratitude.

Unfortunately for Kobe and Co., the Lakers will most likely not win the championship next year. He won't encounter that golden ball next season. He won't taste that sensation for two consecutive years.

This Is Probably A Bad Idea

Earlier in the playoffs, I told Twitterville that I would be singing Poison by Bell Biv DeVoe if the Lakers win the title to celebrate. I would put it on YouTube for everyone to see. Why did I choose Poison? Because they played that song A LOT in NBA arenas. So why not, right?

It was in jeopardy for a while. Houston pushed them to a seven-gamer and Denver played them as well as anybody in a rough six-game series. People were taunting me saying, "I guess we won't get to hear you sing now, will we?" Well, the Lakers are in the Finals now.

And then one of my followers, wcsteelerfan then said, "Well, what if the Magic win? Shouldn't you do something like... sing Single Ladies?" And after a few days of thinking about it, I decided to go with it. Whether I'll don a leotard and heels is another story (most likely I'd do it... but where the hell can I get those?). Yes, I know that one Jonas Brother dude did it but this was mentioned right before he did it. His was half-assed, anyway.

So, yeah, I WILL be singing, regardless of what happens. I'm just hoping it's Poison because that means that the Lakers won the title.

Here's Poison.

And here's Single Ladies.

think the Lakers are a very balanced team. They are a team that can score and
their defense creates offense for them as well. I think LA has the edge; same
reason LA has had the edge in every series thus far. Their size up front is so
difficult for other teams to match up with. You have two seven-footers in Gasol
and [Andrew] Bynum, and throw in Ariza at six-eight and Odom and six-ten. It
gives Phil [Jackson] some real
flexibility with lineups and who's going to go in stretch of games. That's why
I think they have the advantage. Their interior defense is better than everyone
else. Their guards and their bigs can single cover - playing help defense makes
it difficult to score against.

2009 NBA Playoffs: NBA FINALS Predictions

#1 Los Angeles Lakers (WEST) Vs #3 Orlando Magic (EAST)
So it's set! The Disney Finals! Boy, do I miss the Disney afternoon...

Anyway... let's talk about the NBA Finals and look at this very, uh, unbiased preview!

Let's get dangerous.

THE LOS ANGELES LAKERS. Last year, they got their ass kicked in the Finals by the Boston Celtics. It's already <strike>amazing</strike> astounding that they made the Finals after a couple of first round failures in the previous two years. So they set out on a mission to get rougher, tougher, and meaner to get back to the big stage.

And they did in the first fifth of the season. They rolled through the competition with crisp offense and effective (if not, frantic) defense. Along the way, Andrew Bynum got hurt yet again... but they got him back in time for the Playoffs.

Somewhere along the line, they got bored. They would get up for the big games against Boston or Cleveland... but then they would play lazy against teams like Indiana or Charlotte. Still, they finished with the best record in the West with a 65-17 record.

They dispatched of Utah rather quickly in the first round... but then the LAZY Lakers came out against Houston. Houston pushed them to seven games before L.A. finally decided that enough was enough. They then went through a rough-and-tumble series against Denver before they saved their best play in the last two games of the series. It was a lot of head-scratching, hair-pulling, angst, and wall-punching because of these up-and-down Lakers... but they're back and they seem to be focusing and peaking at the right time. A lot of people said that they don't deserve to win the title... but what matters is that they GOT to the Finals.

THE ORLANDO MAGIC. For a lot of the year, we always thought they were one step or one piece away from the championship. We all thought that Boston and Cleveland were simply too strong to take on.

But they did show that they belonged. Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis were all-stars, yes... but Jameer Nelson became one, too, after playing out of his mind and showing leadership that kept the Magic focused on the prize. When Nelson was lost for the year, they swung a trade to get Rafer Alston to solidify the point guard position. They finished third again in the Eastern Conference... but improved by seven wins from the previous season.

A lot of people certainly didn't take the Magic seriously after they struggled to put away the Philadelphia 76ers. But it was the series against Boston (without Kevin Garnett) that took them to another level. They finished off Boston in seven (at their house) and this was after surviving a Big Baby game-winner in Game 4.

And then they went against the Cleveland Cavaliers (crowned by the media and fans as champions 403 times in the playoffs). Cleveland came into the series on fire (8-0 in the playoffs). But Orlando stole Game 1 from them. The LeBron James game-winner from Game 2 didn't bother Orlando too much as they won Games 3 and 4. Orlando went on to "shock" Cleveland in six games as they prevented a Kobe Vs LeBron match-up in the Finals. Orlando grew up in the postseason right in front of our eyes. Dwight Howard punctuated the Cleveland series with a career-high 40 points... and both sides of the floor seem to be clicking for them Magicians. We expect Dwight to be MORE of a beast in this series.

Now... the main storyline right now is that Jameer Nelson may play in the Finals. I don't think it changes the gameplan much for the Lakers but I think they do get a more consistent jumpshooter in Jameer. However, he hasn't played in four months so he may not even play that much. Basically, if Jameer plays, the Lakers just have to watch out even more from the perimeter. And we all know L.A.'s trouble on defending the outside.

All right. Both teams don't lack star power. L.A. has Kobe, Pau Gasol, and Lamar Odom. Orlando has Dwight, Rashard, and Hedo Turkoglu. The other starters are obviously going to be important. On L.A.'s side, Derek Fisher hasn't played good ball since he came off his suspension... although Trevor Ariza has been tearin' it up from downtown. Andrew Bynum has the unenviable task to guard D12... but I think it's more of a confidence issue for him. As for Orlando? Rafer is as hit or miss as they come. As for Courtney Lee? She sounds hot.

(The picture above? She LOOKS like a Courtney Lee.)

But for real, though, this will be a huge test for Lee.

Their benches? Well, Odom will come off the bench with Bynum starting... and Luke Walton, Jordan Farmar, and Sasha Vujacic have played better... but not consistently. Orlando's Mickael Pietrus played great against Cleveland and I assume that he'll be the hellish, athletic defender and 3-point shooter. Kinda like the Lakers' Ariza. Orlando can also rely on Anthony Johnson, Marcin Gortat (POLISH HAMMA!), and J.J. Redick for some steady play... but the Magic's bench has obviously been Pietrus.

Laker fans feared this match-up. Magic has shooters all over the place (including their 6'10" forwards) and the worst part of the Lakers game has been their perimeter defense (especially when lazy). But I don't think the Lakers will be lazy since the stakes are high once again. They have to be like the Gummi Bears. Bouncing here and there and everywhere...

Plus they are longer than Cleveland. The Lakers aren't dwarves at all.

I don't think the Magic will have as many open looks (assuming they don't play lazy perimeter D) as they did against the Cavs. Dwight Howard will eat up the middle so the Lakers will try to use all 18 fouls on him (expect our favorite, DJ Mbenga, to get some burn). But the whole Lakers frontline can score, too, and they will certainly make Turkoglu and Lewis work. That's what doomed Cleveland in the first place.

As much as Orlando has grown up, they are in a whole new world.

The Lakers know what they're in for now. When focused, I don't think ANY team can beat them. We also know that L.A. has this dude named Kobe Bryant, who is as chill as they come at the end of games. And he'll be the difference-maker in every game that they play.

REY'S PREDICTION: Lakers in 6.
PETER: Orlando in 6.*
JIMMY: Lakers in 6.
NICK: Lakers in 6.
DAVE: Lakers in 7.* (is really hoping for Orlando in 6.)
TONY: Coming soon.

*They hate the Lakers.

I also got predictions from the Lady Ballers.

COLLEEN: Orlando in 7.
ALEXIS: Orlando in 6.
JESSICA: Orlando in 6.
CHERYL: Orlando in 6.
ELIZABETH: Orlando in 6.
LISA: Orlando in 5.

But then I forgot that they're ALL from Orlando! Ha ha ha ha.

Get'cha head in the game!

Talking To Chicks Who Love Hoops (Lori Ann)

Welcome to Talking To Chicks Who Love Hoops. We all know female sports fans are a hot commodity for us dudes. Maybe not as rare as we think but us guys always think they're inferior when it comes to sports knowledge. Well, in this feature, I talk to them about the NBA and check what goes through their heads. And I ask them about everything else in an attempt to make this more fun and versatile instead of just straight sports. And watch out; these chicks might know more than you guys. Hell, they might even know more than yours truly.

In this one, we get a history lesson! Lori Ann has been a longtime Phoenix Suns fan. She definitely exceeds any knowledge I have for the team from the Valley of the Sun. We talk about her Suns, the possibility of Kobe Bryant going to the Lakers, the greatest game of all-time, Neal Walk, and David Cassidy. Yes. David Cassidy. This conversation took place before the Conference Finals ended.

My font is in blue and hers is in purple. Let's get it movin'!

Lori Ann,

I talked to two of my other favorite Suns fans earlier for this feature... but the difference now is that Alvin Gentry had his interim tag removed... and he is now the official coach of the Phoenix Suns. How does that make you feel?

In a word: FANtastic! Coach Gentry has worked along-side Mike D'Antoni ("CAPTAIN PLAAAAAAAANET!!" as you and I call him) with the Phoenix Suns. The Suns themselves, are ultra-comfortable with Alvin's style of coaching, and the "run and gun" system. The Suns are a running team, and Coach Gentry wants to let his team RUN! RUN! RUN! The players hold great respect, and have a closeness with Coach Gentry, and respond well to him as a result. Coach Gentry, with his experience as a player and as a coach, is a perfect fit for our Suns and vice-versa!

Ha ha. You said you have been a fan for 40 years. I don't even remember how Neal Walk was, to be honest. Tell me how you got started with these Suns. And while we're at it... give me your favorite player and favorite moments of all-time.

Make that 41 years .....HA! .......Thanks, Rey-Rey .....now my age is showing ---but only on the inside (thank you very much...hahaha). Neal Walk (6' 10") played Center for our Suns, from 1969 to 1973. I was just a kid when I began watching the Suns; they all looked like old men to me. I referred to Neal Walk as "the hairy guy." I have his original Suns photo. I'll attach it, so you can get my drift. My eldest brother (five years older than me) had complete control over the TV ----typical big brother!? When Jerry Colangelo put the Suns together in Phoenix, my brother thought that he won the gazillion dollar lottery --though we had no state lottery back then. Basically, he forced us to watch Suns Basketball. Honestly, I wasn't too thrilled about that at first. My brother used to go through the ceiling, listening to, and watching Suns Basketball. That alone, got me excited for the game. I knew then, that we had something REALLY special in town: Phoenix Suns Basketball !!! Al McCoy, made listening to, and watching the games, sooooooo exciting ----this was long before he ever uttered his infamous "SHAAZAAAAAAM!!!", as there was NO three-point shot in NBA B'ball. When the 3-point shot was incorporated into the game, we HIGHLY contested it, but that's another story for another day. I'm rambling enough here, as it is....ha!

I've had SEVERAL favorite players throughout the Suns' 41 year existence. First, it was "The Hawk": Connie Hawkins. Why? Because my brother said so! (laughing here) ....I'm really serious though. (If my big brother jumped off of a bridge, I would of followed him!) My bro' wouldn't shut up for 2 seconds, while we watched Suns Basketball --it was a game AND a lecture all in one! HA! Keep in mind, that all Suns games were not televised --we'd listen to "Hot Rod Hundley" and Al McCoy over the radio. It was just like being there --whatever that meant. My brother was quite animated, making the radio-games come to life. I had a "thing" for Gail Goodrich--I just thought he was cute; HEY, I was a typical little girl, and Gail Goodrich WAS cute! I was like many of the young girls that watch Suns/NBA B'Ball today, I picked favorite players, by their looks -not necessarily by the talent that each player possessed. Dick Van Arsdale "The Original Sun" as he is known as to this day, was "the bomb!" He also scored the very first bucket in Suns history. Connie Hawkins was THE BEST and the most fun player to see in action. He was the original Dr.J of the NBA -long before Julius Erving ever hit the hardwood. I didn't know that The Hawk was one of the original Harlem Globetrotters, until years later. My brother left that piece of information out ...hmmm.

Alvan Adams was another BIG favorite of mine! I'm so glad he's still with the Suns Organization, as is Dick Van Arsdale and Neal Walk. Yeah, I liked "the hairy guy" ---- first off, his name is Neal. My big brother's name is Neil --- my hero as a kid. Neal Walk REALLY stood out when he played, too. Later, I was a "DJ" Dennis Johnson fanatic. I was crushed when we traded him to Boston! ...may he rest in peace. Then came Garfield (Gar') Heard, Leonard "Truck" Robinson, and Ricky Sobers. I met ALL three at Sky Harbor Airport ---they were HUGE! I was fifteen or sixteen at the time. They dressed like John Travolta, in "Saturday Night Fever" -- heck --everyone wore silk shirts and polyester pants back then. I got autographs from all three players. They had just returned from a 1976 Playoff game at Golden State ---sad ending to THAT season. Then came KJ - Kevin Johnson: my all-time favorite Sun to this day. I could write a book about KJ. The ONLY fan-letter I ever wrote, was to KJ. He even wrote me back on paper..ha! -- on the original Phoenix Suns stationary. Most girls at that age, were writing letters to David Cassidy of The Partridge Family. I wrote to a basketball player, though I DID have a crush on David Cassidy ---we ALL did! Danny was really the funniest on that show, but we're talking Suns Basketball, so I'll shut up and stay on-topic.

My current favorite Sun, is LB!!!!!!!!!! (Yes, you HAVE to yell it!) I love Leandro Barbosa! He's a great player, agile, quick "beep-beep" . and such a humble and well-mannered guy! Of course "MVST3VE" is the most talented player we have, though EACH player possesses certain skills, which make for our great TEAM!

My All-time favorite Suns moments: The first most memorable Suns moment that comes to mind, is KJ's "daddy of ALL dunks" over Hakeem Olajuwon ----UNBELI EVABLE ---and KJ was SOOOOO pumped!!! Secondly, perhaps my MOST memorable Suns moment of all-time, was Gar' Heard's "Shot Heard 'Round The World", sending our team into our FIRST Finals' bout against Boston (1976), into TRIPLE OT !!! WHAT A YEAR ---WHAT A SERIES, and arguably The BEST NBA Finals in NBA history.

I'm pretty sure I already know your answer about how the Suns did this year. So now that Gentry is officially the coach, what else do you think the Suns have to do to get back to the elite? Or do they have to do anything? After all, Amare was out for the last part of the season... and that arguably cost them a playoff berth.

Last year was a revolving door of players and coaches. What a game kill !!! With Coach Gentry at the helm and well in place now, I think we have all we need at present. Let's lock the door(s) and let THIS team cohere and develop! I'm not too sure about Amaré returning in a Suns uniform, if at all. He is still healing very slowly from his second eye injury. As long as our current roster stays in shape, we'll be a-okay. It wouldn't hurt if we acquired another big man, too. The Suns WILL be an elite team again, as long as we KEEP these guys together ---no more revolving door. Let's put a lid on it already!?

Seems like all you Suns fans are rooting for the Nuggets. What's wrong with the Lakers? Is Denver that much better of a city than L.A.? Ha ha ha ha. Southern California's got awesome weather!

Very funny, Rey-Rey ....NOT! You MUST understand that the LA Lakers have been our #1 nemesis for decades! Portland was up there too, at one time. But the Lakers ----- c'mon! It's not so much that we're rooting for Denver. It's that we're rooting against the Lakers! If the Lakers were in the Playoffs against satan himself --we'd be pulling for satan to beat the Lakers! WOW ....I can't believe I said that! (GO AWAY satan! I am NOT on your side!) I think you get the idea here, Rey-Rey. Now, if the *Spurs were playing the Lakers in the WC Playoff Finals .....???? ...... *FAINT* !!? .........

Lastly, do you have any favorite players (past or present) outside of the Phoenix Suns? Hey, remember when Kobe Bryant was rumored to go to the Phoenix Suns when he was a free agent? You would've loved that, wouldn't you?

Okay YOU! Now you're being facetious! Don't MAKE me come over there, Rey-Rey!!? ...HA! Kobe will NEVER EVER be a Sun...period! I DO like watching Ray Allen play. He's got a GREAT stroke, and handles himself beautifully, on and off the court. Yeah, he's pretty, too! Since our Suns are out of the '09 Playoff picture, I'm pulling for Cleveland to win it all. My Dad was born there, and my "sister" lives in Akron. I taught her all about her LeBron'aliers (which I originally NEVER followed). Before she decided to get a TV, I used to watch the Cavs for her, and send her play-by-play reports of HER team. Now, she's 100% tuned in with her Cavs. That's how I became familiar with the Cavaliers. Daniel "Boobie" Gibson, is a little gem; I call him "The Kid." I came to know the Cavs on a first-name basis. THIS is a first for me, as I have NEVER paid much attention to ANY team other than MY PHOENIX SUNS!

Rey-Rey .....we detest and despise the Lakers. It's simply a Suns "thing"......Get used to it, my friend !!?

PS. The weather in Arizona is MUCH nicer than smoggy LA!

Thanks for the chat, ya' big lug, you! ---It was fun!

GO SUNS !!!

- Lori Ann SUPERFAN

Rey-Rey

Simply a Suns thing. The rivalry runs deep. Ha ha ha.

Now, Lori Ann,

I'm not stupid. I KNOW Suns fans detest the Lakers. But, hey, I don't play that game. I'm probably as objective as you can get for an L.A. fan. It's been no secret that I love Steve Nash's game and told our friend, Sara, that in the 2004-05 MVP race that it was NO CONTEST that Nash won that award. And, yeah, I did root for D'Antoni's boys to win it all in that season and, after they eliminated the Lakers, in '06-'07, when Robert Horry said hello to Nash at the scorer's table.

So when you say that the Suns are going to be A-OK... are you talking NBA Title for these Suns? The West is tough. We all know what the Lakers are capable of, Denver grew up in this year's playoffs, Houston figures to be around, San Antonio will ALWAYS be around, and don't forget Portland, Utah, New Orleans, and Dallas. It will be an uphill climb for these Suns.

Rey-Rey, I think it's going to take the Suns a few years to REALLY cohere. Unfortunately, time is NOT on our side regarding a few veterans, ie., Steve Nash, Shaq, and Amaré, if he returns to the lineup. Our best shot at an NBA title, WILL be the upcoming '09-2010 season. After that, the Suns are obviously going to have to make trades and acquisitions, as players retire and/or are traded. We've still got a LOT of young talent on this team. Anything could happen.

You don't expect Amare Stoudemire to be around. Do you like him as a player? Or has he worn out his welcome here?

I love Amaré Stoudemire! It's a question of his health, as well as what the Suns management decides to do, as well as what Amaré wants to do. I'd most definitely welcome him back with open arms!

I can't say I watched Gar Heard, Connie Hawkins, and Alvan Adams. After all, I was born AFTER those players were in their prime... but I did see highlights, including the Gar Heard shot. That must have been a thrill at the time. I'll see if I can find those games themselves sometime.

Check the Suns archives and YouTube. I'm not much of a video watcher online, but I know there is a LOT of old NBA footage on the Internet. Good luck in your search.

I mean, let's face it; Kobe going to the Suns was a REAL possibility. Would you have embraced him had he GONE to the Suns? Or would you have let go of Phoenix because of that? Hey, you never know in this crazy NBA. We didn't think Iverson and Billups were going to be traded for each other and look what happened.

First and foremost, I could NEVER in a million years let go of MY PHOENIX SUNS! I've been a Suns fan since the inception of this team. No way, no how, would I EVER walk away from MY Suns! Regarding Kobe Bryant as a Phoenix Sun: No. I would not embrace him as a Phoenix Sun. That's all I have to say about that. I still would NOT abandon MY team, no matter what happens. Yes, Rey-Rey, just when you think you have a great team with great chemistry, the whole thing can be blown to smithereens --- we all saw this firsthand when D'Antoni walked and Shawn Marion was traded.

Okay, I think you've been watching the Playoffs. Give me your thoughts... predictions... etc. Everything you can think of about the Playoffs. And tell me why L.A. won't win it besides the fact that you don't like them. You know what? Never mind. That'll probably be the only reason why you wouldn't pick L.A. to win. Ha ha.

I cannot predict that the Lakers will not win the 2009 NBA Championship. Simply put, I'm not pulling for them to do so. Hey, I'm a Suns fan ....it comes with the territory. I had a good feeling that Cleveland would take the title this year. Right now, the only thing I'm certain of, is that nothing is for certain ....ha! One game at a time, and may the best team win. I don't want the 2009 Finals to be won by the referees. I want the BEST team to win --period. GO CAVS! .....hahaha.....

It's really cool that your sister is into basketball now. But, man, I know David Stern is having his wet dream of Kobe Vs LeBron. I would have no problem with that but I'd like to see some CLEAN, WELL-PLAYED games.

That makes two of us, Rey-Rey! NBA refereeing is out of control. The league came close to folding in the early 80's --let's NOT go there again!

Looking forward to your rebuttal.

Rey-Rey

P.S. It's too bad that KJ dunk was the same series the Suns lost against the Rockets. Ha ha.

Yes, that loss to Houston was a tough blow indeed! KJ's "Daddy of ALL dunks" somehow softened the blow just a smidgeon. Suns fans seem to better recall KJ's dunk over Hakeem Olajuwon, than the Playoff elimination.

In GREAT hope - GO SUNS !!!!

Lori Ann SUPERFAN

So hopefully, that wasn't TOO long. Ha ha ha ha. I'd like to thank Lori Ann for taking the time to write all of this. I know more about the Suns history now after reading that. Hopefully, you Suns fans do, too. We need more longtime fans like Lori. That's one dedicated superfan right there.

NBA shoes, a closer look

As I was at NBA Nation yesterday, I couldn't help but notice their
display of NBA players' shoes. Aside from their size, I was generally
just impressed with the detail and customization that each player's
shoe exhibits.
NBA Rumor Mill: Amare 50-50 on Suns in Fall, Birdman Nuggets' Top Priority & Is Beating Kobe the Ultimate Challenge?

After a great Playoff run to the NBA Finals, in spite of the pathetic officiating, the Orlando Magic and L.A. Lakers are on a collision course for NBA supremacy. While we wait until Thursday for the Game 1 tip-off, we've got the best rumors throughout the league, and we won't walk away without shaking your hand afterward.

Amare to Atlanta? It's A Possibility

For those Phoenix Suns fans who were okay with the teams' late season meltdown because of the impending return from Amare Stoudemire, you might want to settle down with the Playoff predictions. In fact, the Arizona Republic reports that the talented big man may not even be back with the Suns to start the 2009-2010 season.

Last Friday, Stoudemire discussed a host of questions about his rehabilitation from his damaged retina to the chance that he may head to the ATL.

"They would love for me to be in Atlanta," Stoudemire said before adding, "I still should be in Phoenix next season." Hmm, that can't make you feel very good if you're in Phoenix.

Stoudemire also told a D.C. radio station that there was "a 50 percent chance" he would return to the Suns this fall. When you hear something like that, how can you build around Amare, honestly? Isn't there a point where you finally have to make the move? The guy has been involved in more trade rumors since Kevin Garnett in the days he was wasting away in Minnesota. If Amare wants to be the alpha dog on this team, as he contests is the case, he can't cast such uncertainties in the off-season. It's detrimental to his relationship with the organization and the chemistry the team hopes to build.

Nuggets Want Birdman To Fly Back

It's almost impossible to explain how much Chris Andersen means to the Denver Nuggets. He was 2nd in the league in blocked shots per game, incredible considering that he doesn't get starter's minutes. That is the reason that The Birdman is the Nuggets top priority this summer, says the Denver Post. He is one of possibly seven free agents, which is going to make it very difficult to keep the same roster.

While Andersen maintains that he wants to return, his asking price will likely dictate who the Nuggets have to let go. They can not afford to let a high energy guy like Andersen go, especially with how incredibly inconsistent the Nuggets are on defense. They were applauded by media pundits up until the L.A. series, when they fell apart in spite of their seemingly athletic superiority to L.A.

Is Beating Kobe How One Measure's NBA Success?

There are certain degrees in which an NBA player can measure his career's success by. For many, the MVP symbolizes a step into the best of the best, and we all know how important winning a championship can be when it comes to public perception. Ask Charles Barkley about it. But is one of the most important criteria currently beating Kobe Bryant? It is according to Slate.

An article discussing the merits of beating The Black Mamba says, "Playing Kobe Bryant is the biggest occasion in the league. From the moment he went pro, Bryant's obvious, self-conscious ambition was to be the next Michael Jordan, the player against whom all other players would be measured. In his own way, Kobe has reached that goal. It's just that other players like the way they measure up. This doesn't mean that Bryant is easy to beat. If it were easy, nobody would care, and Kobe would be another Jerry Stackhouse or Vince Carter on the scrap heap of failed Next Jordans. Bryant is a ferocious competitor, a preposterously skilled and creative scorer, a stifling defender. He's just not impossible to beat."

Let's clear up some of the hyperbole that is floating around. Kobe Bryant is not the next Michael Jordan. There will never be another player like Michael Jordan. We all know this and those that disagree are blinded by bias or a fading understanding of how important and great His Airness was. However, there are few players that anyone currently gets as excited to play than Kobe. In that respect, and only that respect, is the comparison accurate.

Dear Lakers,... FINALS! HERE WE COME!

Written by Jimmy "Win In The End" Castro... as he calls himself. Anyway, Jimmy is a die-hard Laker fan and appears in our podcast, the Chronicles of Crotty. You can find Jimmy on Twitter under the name... wait for it... WinInTheEnd! Of course!

This... letter... was written right after the Lakers clinched the Western Conference throne. I will now put his font on purple.

Dear Lakers,

FINALS, HERE WE COME! You did it and I´m very proud of each and every one of you. You guys came out and played in Game 6. You were the better team and you proved it. I have to give the Denver Nuggets a lot of credit; they haven´t been to the Western Conference Finals in 24 years. Their fans have nothing to be ashamed of. They should be very proud of that.

Here are the positives of this game.

1. The 1st 6 minutes of the 1st quarter. We were winning, 9-7. Yea, I know it´s not a big lead. But we had to get a good start on the road. I want you guys to do that in the Finals of every game.
2. Trevor Ariza, you had 10 points in the 1st quarter. It´s great to hear that Kobe was not the leading score of the 1st quarter. You were making shots and you scored a total of 17 points (7-9 on the field in 22 minutes).
3. Lakers shot 57% overall. In 3 point land, you went 6-10. You guys were making shots on the road. Keep it up.
4. 28 assists. You passed the ball around. It´s great to hear when Kobe had 10 assists. I know he had 35 points but he was passing the ball well.
5. A very nice close out in the 1st half on the road. We had a 9-1 run and played great defense. After a score, everybody ran back to defend. Love that Kobe block on Melo.
6. They scored only 40 points in the 1st half. Yes, 40 points in their house. To me, that sounds like great defense.
7. Carmelo Anthony had 25 points and shot 6-17 in 37 minutes. Chancey Billups had 10 points, shot 2-7 in 39 minutes. You guys shut them down; again, great defense.
8. Taking over the 4th quarter. You guys were beating them by 13 points of the end of the 3rd quarter. I am so glad you guys didn´t kick back. You beat them 36-25 in the 4th. Knowing you guys, you become lazy. But that wasn´t the case in this game. You closed them out.
9. Rebounds. In the 1st half you guys didn´t look like you wanted the boards. But you did in the 2nd half. You beat them, 38-27, on the boards.
10. FREE THROWS! Yes, I said free throws. We shot 24 and we made all 24. 100 percent. You see, we get more breathing room if we make our free throws. If it´s over 80 percent, then I´m a happy camper.

Negatives time.

1. Andrew had 2 quick fouls in the 1st quarter. Oh yea, and it wasn´t his fault. He had to foul them even though it wasn´t his guys. Guard your man.
2. In the 1st half, we were being so careless with the basketball. Protect the ball. Stop doing stupid passes.
3. 8 WIDE OPEN 3´s shot. Luckily they only made 3 of them. We can´t leave a guy open like Billups, Smith, and Kleiza. You know they're going to make it. Luckily, they weren´t.
4. Turnovers in the 1st half. We had 11 and, again, that was being careless. You guys picked it up in the 2nd half with only 1.
5. Pau, I didn´t see you use your body and size in the 1st half. But you picked it up in the 2nd half. Don´t be afraid to use it. You're a talented big man.

I´m glad we're not playing on Sunday night. You guys will have 5 full days to rest. That sounds good to hear. I really don´t care who we face. Could be the best team in the NBA (Cleveland) or the team that swept us in the regular season (Orlando). I know we could beat both of them. Just play like the last 2 games and we'll be fine. See you guys on Thursday night for the 2009 NBA FINALS!
