Early Central Division Preview: Detroit Pistons

With teams scrambling to sign free agents now that they have become eligible to sign with new teams, the off-season is now in full swing. After previously covering the Bucks and Pacers, I will now move on to take a look at the Detroit Pistons, who finished right behind the Chicago Bulls last season both in the division and the Eastern Conference. This coming season, however, the Pistons will look quite different, with a new coach and a revamped roster.

Strengths:
This team has some definite talent that they can build around. G
Rodney Stuckey is developing into a true scorer, who can get in the
paint at will and finish both near the rim and from long range. SF
Tayshaun Prince is a brilliant defender (he has covered all positions
except PG, and averaged a positive PER difference compared to
opponents' counterparts in all 4 of those positions), who has
ridiculously long arms, decent range, and, despite his slight frame,
never gets hurt. SG Richard Hamilton is a genuine sharpshooter and
natural scorer (career 19.3 points per 36 minutes, 17.9 per game),
and he is also a pretty solid passer. Ben Gordon will likely take
Hamilton's starting role, which may make him available to other teams
via trade, but Gordon will be an excellent replacement. Gordon is a
phenomenal scorer who excels under pressure (36.3 points per 48
minutes in clutch situations). Villanueva could be a solid rebounder
and low-post offensive threat after averaging 21.7 points and 8.9
boards per 36 minutes last season. F/C Jason Maxiell can rebound and
block shots well off the bench, and he's been known to eat babies
(check out the T-shirt) along with weak shots (Tyson Chandler knows)
for late evening snacks. Daye and Summers could possibly contribute
off the bench (Daye's body needs to bulk up to allow him to use his
talents in the physical NBA), and Jerebko, who some liken to Andres
Nocioni, will probably continue to develop overseas. If they bring
back AI, he'll offer elite scoring once again, but I'll bet they'll
let him and Sheed (who has signed with the Celtics) walk.

Weaknesses:
This team had some awful chemistry last year, and watching them play
was a real eyesore. The huge changes in Detroit might mean more
chemistry issues, but only time will tell. Selfish play from the
likes of AI and Sheed, together with beef between Rip and Coach Curry
(who has just been canned), doomed this team from the start last
season. Sheed should be particularly ashamed of himself, mailing in
game after game and his overall play smacked of apathy. His scoring
average per 36 minutes was his lowest since his rookie season, and he
shot a career-low 41.9% from the field, which is atrocious for a
power forward. Luckily for the Pistons, his contract is up, and he
can chuck up 3's and carry on with his shameful play somewhere else.
Villanueva is a good start in trying to improve the post presence,
but he'll need help, which the Pistons can't offer him presently.
Dealing Hamilton (which apparently isn't likely to happen) could
bring that help, but, as it stands, this team will have to play
small-ball, and they will have to play at a high tempo, which doesn't
suit Charlie V all that well. Also, while Stuckey is undoubtedly
talented, he's not a true point guard, and the Pistons really don't
have anyone on the roster who can run an offense like a true point
guard. The biggest problem, though, will be defense. Aside from
Prince and Maxiell, this team doesn't have very good defensive
players, and talented guards in particular are going to light up the
Pistons backcourt.

Outlook:
This team's future is too difficult to predict. The Pistons have made
some big changes, but there are still plenty of holes that need
filling in this franchise, including a coach who can attempt to bring
all the pieces together. I could see this team finishing anywhere
from 5th to 10th in the East, and, while I
predict that they'll make the playoffs, I'm not confident in any
predictions I make concerning the Pistons.

Prediction:
44-40, 3rd in Central Division, 7th in East

His off-court attitude will certainly be a problem, especially if he's going to be with us for two years (unless trades or injuries change that). But it's been said that teammates love him and guys think he's a winner. After all, Kevin Garnett did hunt him down.

After the jump, analysis on the great Rasheed Wallace (kidding on the "great" part guys, no need to bash me... or is there?).

Latest Cavs News Roundup

Could Channing Frye (middle) be the Cavs latest free agent target?

In what's been a wild and crazy past few days, here's the latest in what's going on in the Cavs world.

Cavs Assistant Moving On

After Avery Johnson and Joe Dumars could not come to terms on becoming the next Detroit Pistons head coach, Dumars turned to a familiar face and has picked Cavaliers assistant John Kuester as the next Pistons head coach.

The Detroit Pistons
have agreed to terms with Cavaliers assistant coach John Kuester to be
their new head coach, a source with knowledge of the negotiations told
SI.com.

Another league source said the contract was for two seasons with a team option for a third year.

Kuester has been with the team since 2007, when he replaced Kenny Natt on Mike Brown's staff.

Kuester has been credited in revamping the team's lowly offense and turning it into a much improved unit. He served as the de facto "offensive coordinator" on Mike Brown's staff and handled a lot of the offensive duties last year.

LeBron Denies Commitment To Ariza

The 2010 circus continues to grow.

After Trevor Ariza claimed that LeBron told him he was staying past the 2010 season, LeBron's camp came out and denied that.

According to a source close to LeBron James, the current NBA Most
Valuable Player did not tell free agent Trevor Ariza that he was for
sure going to be with the Cavaliers past 2010.

So what's the real story here?

My best guess is that what Ariza said is probably true and LeBron's camp is trying to cover this up and act like nothing happened. Ariza has nothing to gain from putting this out in the press so why would he make this stuff up? It's not likely he did.

So why did LeBron's camp deny this if he's staying? This just seems like LeBron trying to keep things close to the vest and keep the media guessing, which he seems to love to do.

So even though the Cavs missed out on Ariza, more good news came from this than any other "loss" the Cavs have had this off-season.

(P.S. - the secret meeting in Los Angeles that Ferry and Brown went to, was supposedly to meet with Ariza to sway him to coming to the Cavs. Ariza supposedly considered signing with the Cavs, after agreeing with the Rockets, but decided to stay with Houston.)

Marion To Mavs, Not Cavs

The Cavs were supposedly interested in adding Shawn Marion but not it appears he'll be heading to Texas.

The Mavericks and Toronto Raptors, according to NBA front-office sources, are in advanced discussions on a sign-and-trade deal that would bring Marion to Dallas.

Shawn Marion and his agent, Dan Fegan, have been looking for a deal somewhere in the range of $10 million per year and they're not going to get that on the open market so the only way to get that money is through a sign-and-trade.

The most the Cavs could have offered for Marion was their full MLE (around $5.8 million). The Cavs weren't also likely to offer him long-term security, which could have been another sticking point.

While Marion could have added some much needed talent to the Cavs lineup, the fit would be questionable. Marion is best suited in an up-tempo offense where his size and shooting ability are disguised and his athletic ability is highlighted. Putting him in a half-court offense would highlight and disguise all the wrong things.

Ferry Is After Frye

With the "stretch" power forward market starting to thin out, the Cavs have started to set their sights on a long time Danny Ferry favorite in Channing Frye.

After making a free-agent scouting trip to Los Angeles on Sunday, Cavs
GM Danny Ferry came home and hosted free-agent power forward Channing
Frye on Monday at the team's practice facility in Independence. Frye is
the type of "stretch" forward the Cavs are interested in during the
free-agent period as they look to find big men who can hit jumpers when
teams collapse on LeBron James and Shaquille O'Neal.

While Frye may not be the name that most fans would want to see in connection with the Cavs, the PF options are starting to slim out and it's looking like if the Cavs want a decent, well-priced, stretch PF, then this is likely to be their best bet.

After having a breakout rookie season in New York, Frye was shipped off to Portland where he struggled to play and produce behind guys like LaMarcus Aldridge, Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla.

Frye is a guy that Ferry has been very high on for a long time, similarly too Delonte West, and could be a guy that the Cavs may ultimately end up with.

The Denver Nuggets and Phoenix Suns are also supposedly in the running, with the Suns being the rumored favorites to land Frye's services.

McDyess Would Be Nice

Another one of the Cavs top PF targets is former Detroit Piston, Antonio McDyess.

McDyess is reportedly waiting until the Pistons have a new head coach to make a decision on whether or not he wants to re-sign with the Pistons.

In addition to the Pistons being interested, the Cavs (supposedly have offered their full MLE over two years), Magic and Spurs have McDyess in their sights, with the Spurs being the favorites as of now.

Hey LeBron! Your Boy J-Kidd Even Rejected The Knicks!

Yep, LeBron's "boy", Jason Kidd, turned down the Mecca of Basketball and the best city in the whole wide world (sarcasm) to stay in Dallas, Texas.

The free agent point guard has agreed to sign a three-year contract for
more than $25 million to remain with Dirk Nowitzki and the rest of the
Mavericks. The New York Knicks were among Kidd's suitors.

The Knicks were supposedly offering Kidd a similar deal, which was seemingly in opposition of their plan to clear as much cap space for the 2010 off-season as possible. The Knicks probably saw this as an opportunity to get one of LeBron's friends in New York, so they could make it easier for him to leave Cleveland.

So let's hope LeBron takes a page of his buddies book and does the same thing as J-Kidd: turn down NY to stay with his current team.

Wade 'I'll Stay If They Contend'

Looks like Dwyane Wade is taking a stand about his future in Miami.

"I'm going to listen. I owe the Miami Heat
that much. I'm going to listen to what they have to say and I'm going
to think about it," Wade told The Associated Press. "But right now, the
way I feel, I want to make sure that we're on track to where I want us
to be on track to before I sign back."

. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

"I'm good with that," Wade said, "for one year."

Another season around .500, though, won't be as enticing.
"That's not enough for me," said Wade.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I've told Coach Riley this: All my life, all I've ever wanted to do is
win and be put in a position where I can win and succeed," Wade said.
"Build me a team. Put the pressure on me to win a championship. Give me
a team and say, 'All right, you've got to go do it,' and I'll take that
pressure. Give me guys that we feel can compete every year to win a
championship. I don't want to go anywhere else."
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
"I want to make sure that we stay competitive and we have an
opportunity to win championships, like I've done before," Wade said. "I
don't want to be content with winning games. I don't want to win games.
I want to win championships. That's what I'm all about."

Looks like Wade is a bit unhappy about being on a team that doesn't exactly have a championship caliber future.

So if Wade and LeBron have similar minds, does that mean LeBron is staying in Cleveland then?

Cavs In Contact With Linas Kleiza

One of the more interesting names mentioned this off-season in connection with the Cavs, could be forward Linas Kleiza.

Kleiza, a restricted free agent, has supposedly been in contact with the Cavs, as well as the Toronto Raptors throughout this free agency period.

Kleiza, a Lithuanian, is a very interesting player. He's a swing forward with good shooting ability. But his ability to put points on the board fast, along with this potential, is perhaps his best trait. He doesn't exactly fit into the defensive mold that Mike Brown likes but Kleiza has the potential to develop into a decent defender with the Cavs.

Kleiza is only 24 years old and has a lot of room left to grow. For the right price, he could be a nice piece to develop and have come off the bench to provide some bench scoring, something the Cavs sorely lacked last year.

Drew Gooden Wouldn't Mind The Cavs?

DrewGooden The teams I wouldn't mind going to, Spurs, Cav's, Magic, and Golden St! What do you guys think?

What do I think Drew? There aren't enough words in the dictionary to say how I would feel about you coming back. The shortest and nicest word in the dictionary: NO.

Sheed A Celtic

Yet another reason to hate the Celtics.

Sheed is going to Boston.

The Boston Globe reported Wallace will sign for two years at the midlevel exception.

This will be interesting to see how the rest of the Celtics off-season pans out. Leon Power (UFA) and Glen Davis (RFA) are both free agents and it doesn't look like either are expected to be back at this current point in time.

This move also let's us know what we already know: the Celtics championship window is closing and closing fast.

Even though Rajon Rondo and Kendrick Perkins represent good, young talent on the Celtics, the rest of the core is aging fast. Garnett is 33. Allen is 33. Pierce is 31.

Looks like the Cavs won't have to be worrying about the Celtics for too many more years.

LeBron Gets A Special Invite

Looks like LeBron and Dan Gilbert are going to get some extra time to bond together....in Idaho.

LeBron James will be spending some time with friend Warren
Buffett at the prestigious Allen & Company media industry
conference in Sun Valley, Idaho.
But it wasn't Buffett who got
James and LRMR Marketing CEO Maverick Carter the invite to the
ultra-elite five-day conference that has been labeled as "summer camp
for billionaires." It is a place for executives and movers and shakers
in the media industry to share ideas and sometimes strike major deals.

According to a source, James got his extremely hard-to-secure
invite with help from Cavaliers majority owner Dan Gilbert, who will be
attending the event for the seventh consecutive year. Gilbert has been
pushing for James to be included for the last couple years.

James and Gilbert are among about 260 guests and
their families on the guest list, which is expected to include Bill
Gates, Rupert Murdoch, NBA Commissioner David Stern, NFL Commissioner
Roger Goodell, MLB Commissioner Bud Selig and NHL Commissioner Gary
Bettmen.

That pretty much wraps up what has been a crazy free agency period to start and there's going to be a lot more of that still to come.

The Knee Jerks for 7-6-09: A busy week in the D

My weekly gabfest with Greg Eno of GregEno.com
is now a 90-minute extravaganza, and we needed every one of those
minutes to talk about what was a VERY busy week in the Detroit sports
stratosphere.

As always, Eno breaks down the highlights of another Knee Jerks episode!

Last night's show was chock full of goodies....

We
kicked things off with an interview with Tom Hannon, who runs
TheBaseballPage.com and has written a book about Wiffle Ball (yep!)
called Backyard Ball (BackyardBall.net). Tom also has constructed a to-scale replica of
Brooklyn's Ebbets Field (LittleEbbetsField.com).

After Tom, Al and I delved into the
chaos in Pistons Land, with free agents coming and going and the
coaching job still vacant; the Red Wings losses in free agency; the
Tigers' feeble lineup; the Steve McNair tragedy; and our Jerks of the
Week.

Some highlights:

Big Al (on the Pistons' coaching search): "You throw enough money at someone, you'll get them."

(on the Red Wings losing Marian Hossa): "The Red Wings are the best-run organization in sports. If anyone can make up for Hossa's loss, it's the Red Wings."

Eno (on Curtis Granderson): "I can't believe he made the All-Star team, to tell you the truth. He's fallen in love with the home run."

(on the Tigers' lineup): "I look at it and I think, 'Where's the pop?' This is NOT a division-winning lineup, I'm sorry. They need a bat."

There wasn't even any time for Word Association!

Click here for a direct MP3 download, or below for the stream! The show is also available on the Zune Marketplace (which is my preferred MP3 player, but I'm to cheap to buy anything Apple, especially the iPod) , and will soon be found on iTunes!

Are The Boston Celtics Championship Hopes Guaran-Sheed With Big Signing?

With many hopes and dreams of returning to the cream of the crop,
the Boston Celtics managed to pull out one of the biggest offseason
free-agent signings thus far, giving 34-year old Rasheed Wallace a
two-year Mid-Level Exception deal (5.8 mill).

After a disappointing playoff run for the title last season, along
with an injured Kevin Garnett, the Celtics look to head into the
09'-10' season with all the heart and determination needed to win
another championship ring.

But are the Celtics Championship hopes "guaran-sheed" with this major signing?

Let's dig in.

Sheed brings an extreme amount of experience, talent, leadership,
confidence, versatility, and intensity to the Boston Celtic's table.
(Sometimes bringing a bit too much intensity, usually leading the
league in technical fouls). He can back up Kevin Garnett, as well as
start at the center position if needed to.

Wallace is a four-time All-Star and will be entering his 15th season
in the NBA. He currently ranks fifth amongst active members in personal
fouls (2,997) and fourth in 3PTM amongst NBA players 6'10" or taller
with 982 career three-pointers made.

The seven footer is one of the few players that you would absolutely
love to have on your team, but would certainly despise to face up
against.

Wallace is well-known for his intimidation tactics used on the NBA
court, similar to those of Kevin Garnett's. Both players will now get
an opportunity to team up and quite possibly emerge as the scariest duo
in the league today.

But how will Sheed react when stepping onto the court in a completely new environment?

Throughout Wallace's fourteen seasons, the only time he averaged
less than 30 MPG was during his rookie year with the Washington Bullets.

Will Rasheed be able to adjust and post his normal figures with the sudden decline in minutes?

How about his contract? Wallace resorted to the lowest signing contract of his career, the mid-level exception.

Did he really want to go to Boston or was it literally forced and pressured upon by the Celtics entire organization?

It was stated that the Boston Celtics knocked on Wallace's front
door at 12 o'clock midnight, the minute the big man became a
free-agent. In addition, at Wallace's three-hour conference with the
Celtics, the organization basically tried to sway Rasheed by having
Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett each attend the meeting.

Whatever Boston did, it worked.

And with the huge signings and trades made by the top contenders in
the league (Cavaliers, Magic, Spurs, and Lakers) the Celtics made the
smartest move that they could with what they had.

Will the Celtics win a championship during the upcoming season?

It is too early to know for sure, but one thing we do know is that
they certainly improved this offseason with the acquistion of Rasheed
Wallace.

Nearing The Edge Of Retirement, Rises The Only True "Answer"

With a resume consisting of
a '96-'97 Rookie of the Year Award, one time MVP Award, nine time
All-Star (including two MVP All-Star Awards), three time All-NBA First
Team player, four scoring titles, and ranking fifth all time with a
career 27.1 PPG, Allen Iverson truly deserves his nickname titled, "The
Answer."

Although Iverson has yet to win a championship ring during his 14
seasons in the National Basketball Assocation, he is currently ranked
as the 16th all-time leading scorer in NBA history, playing in just 886
games and dropping 23,983 points. When taking a look at the all time
top 20 leading scorers in NBA History, Iverson is the only player to
produce the amount of points he did in less than 900 games.

In addition, AI is also the only player listed under 6'4" in the top
20 all time leading scorers in NBA history. (If you never owned a pair
of AI's, shame on you).

At the age of 34, many do believe that Iverson is nearing the edge
of retirement, especially after a disappointing '08-'09 NBA season,
averaging career-lows in PPG (17.4) and MPG (36.5), along with an
ailing back injury.

Now as a free-agent and searching for a new home, is the famous AI
really all out of answers or does he have enough gas in the tank to
exceed hall-of-famers Patrick Ewing and Jerry West in the all-time NBA
scoring list?

Also, does Iverson still have what it takes to help bring a team
into contention and lift himself from future Hall-of-Famer to a living
Legend?

AI changed the game of basketball the day he first stepped foot onto
the NBA court and will forever be remembered for his ridiculous
crossover.

Iverson recently twittered stating,

"I'm a Free Agent, healthy again, and capable of signing with
any team. My only preference will be to play for a coach that knows
what I bring to the table and that I am going to bring it every night!
Someone that knows how to best utilize my skills to make our team the
very best that we can be. For those of you who thought that I was done,
Think Again!"

Hopefully Iverson gets an opportunity to play on a team that has potential to win a championship.

If he does, we all know that he could be the one missing answer to the contending teams problem.

**Sources say Pat Riley is in contact with Iverson...oh boy.

NBA Talk: Plans Change In Detroit With Villanueva and Gordon Added

We all remember the heartbreaking move for Detroit when they sent Chauncey Billups to the Denver Nuggets while Detroit brought in Allen Iverson. It wasn't good for the Pistons as they got destroyed in the playoffs.

Then here they are with Iverson gone and Rasheed Wallace aging a bit. And Richard "Rip" Hamilton can't do everything by himself. How can Detroit survive? I'll tell you why.

With two standout adds of Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva, the Pistons look like a viperous team coming into the 2009-10 season as they look to strangle their opponents.

And another good thing is that they haven't reached 30 yet, as they are both in there mid-20s, which is acceptable for this offense.

Bringing in Gordon really helps out Rip and Rodney Stuckey being the "sixth man" of the group. Gordon makes a monumental difference towards the squad. It'll look like the "good ol' days" when it was Isaiah Thomas, Vinnie Johnson, and Joe Dumars.

Now we know how Gordon can help, how the heck will Villanueva end up? I'll tell you how.

Villanueva helps replace Rasheed Wallace, who reportedly has received some pretty big attraction from the Boston Celtics, and according to ESPN.com, some appeal from the San Antonio Spurs.

Although Villanueva is probably better shooter, there is absolutely no way he can reinstate the defensive intelligence of Sheed. But besides that, the Pistons were built to be a younger and stronger team.

Wallace, I know, is the heart and soul of the Detroit Pistons, but he has to go and it looks he will...to the C's.

Many people were also lingering for the trade of Kwame Brown and Jason Maxiell to the New Orleans Hornets for Tyson Chandler and Julian Wright, but c'mon: Aren't Gordon and Villanueva better?

The Pistons look to be a powerhouse team and can be a threat in the Central Conference. But it's going to be a tougher division as the Indiana Pacers and Milwaukee Bucks join the mix as both teams are dying for playoff-spot.

With Ben Gordon, Charlie Villanueva, Rip Hamilton, Rodney Stuckey, and Tayshaun Prince leading the Pistons, they can be that team they were: a furious one.

And Gordon and Villanueva are the first step in the progress.

Swing and a Miss: Ariza > Artest According to Plaschke

This is the start of what I hope to be a series on Celtics 17. I will find stupid basketball columns and show them to you.

The first is a column by Bill Plaschke of the LA Times. You know, the guy with the egg-shaped head on "Around the Horn" who thinks the Dodgers are better without Manny Ramirez. This is his opinion on the Lakers' Ron Artest signing.

"Less than three weeks after the parade, the NBA champion Lakers have already met the biggest threat to their throne.

Themselves.

What are they thinking? What are they doing?"

Well, I'm just a blogger so what do I know? But from the looks of it I'd say that the Lakers are trying to improve.

"They just won a title that would not have been possible without the
strong defense and stunning shooting of a 24-year-old kid with a
limitless ceiling."

Plaschke is referring to Trevor Ariza, who was just signed by the Rockets. There are many good things to say about Ariza, but "limitless ceiling" is not one of them.

"Yet they send the kid packing for an aging nut whose greatest hits have occurred on the heads of fans."

Artest is 29, a year and three months younger than Kobe Bryant. As for being a nut, are people really still talking about an incident that occurred five years ago?

Come on. Michael Jordan hit Steve Kerr in practice. Randy Johnson hit a teammate to get out of Seattle. Unless you were hit by Artest, you need to get over it.

"They just won a title with a locker room bathed in the soothing light of unselfishness, teamwork and a quiet temerity."

And that's exactly how you could describe Artest with the Rockets. In fact, Artest might be better than Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming when you take his defense into account.

"Yet they cut the power and added the darkest of moods, a guy who has
made a career out of hoarding the ball, the attention, and the anger."

Hoarding the ball? Artest is usually the guy who wants to assist the top scorer, the guy who wants to guard the other team's best player, and he does both of those very well. The only times he's angry seems to be when he's the main guy on a losing team, which won't be the case with the Lakers.

"Tell me again, why did they get rid of Trevor Ariza for Ron Artest?"

Because Artest is better and comes with a cheaper contract.

"Explain to me, please, why they wouldn't even negotiate further with Trevor Ariza before quickly agreeing to sign Ron Artest?"

They negotiated with Ariza and offered him the same contract as Artest, but Ariza wanted more. Why sign an inferior player for more money?

"Artest is a better player,"

Exactly.

"but that's not the point."

I'm not sure if there is a point in this article. There certainly hasn't been so far.

"Ariza was a better fit, and that's what wins championships."

What about two Finals ago when Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom were inconsistent and Bryant didn't have a secondary player to help him. Isn't that a bit more important than Ariza, who at best is the fifth best player on a championship team?

"Artest is a strong defender, but if the Lakers need someone to quietly
hound a guy during a routine inbounds pass and be willing to make a
small play to win a big game, that's Ariza."

Who's better at hounding a guy on an inbound pass than Artest?

"Artest is a good shooter, but if the Lakers need someone willing to
stand in the shadows for three quarters and emerge to make a big
three-pointer before disappearing again, that's Ariza."

I've never heard of "disappearing" as a good quality of a basketball player, but then again, that might be why I'm not paid to write.

"Artest will supposedly make the Lakers tougher, but what is tougher
than showing up every day and playing hard every play and fighting your
way to a championship?"

So does Ariza disappear or does he "play hard on every play?" First of, kudos on the word choice in that quote. Second of all, Artest might be the hardest working defender in basketball.

"Ariza has a ring, Artest does not, so the Lakers are giving up wins."

Robert Horry has seven championships. Michael Jordan has six. Adam Morrison has a ring. LeBron James has none. Horry > Jordan and Morrison > James.

"Ariza is young 24, Artest is an old 29, so the Lakers are giving up age."

Now you're just repeating the age argument, which is easily proven wrong. Unless of course, Bryant is now past his prime.

"Ariza shot 48% from the three-point line in the playoffs while Artest shot 28%, so the Lakers are giving up clutch."

The Lakers usually go to Bryant or Derek Fisher before relying on Ariza for a clutch shot. Ariza scores his points when Bryant is double-teamed. In fact, Bryant will be double-teamed less frequently with Artest, giving Bryant more opportunities for clutch shots.

"The one thing the Lakers are absolutely gaining here is money, which is
exactly what you will be paying them in increasing increments next
season."

Real professional. Now you're discouraging people from going to Lakers games.

"Artest will sign a three-year deal for about $18 million, roughly the same annual salary that the Houston Rockets gave Ariza.

But Ariza was given two more years by the Rockets, pushing his total closer to $33 million."

You've already admitted that Artest is a better player. Now you're saying that Ariza is more expensive. This isn't really helping your argument.

"Heaven forbid you would want to give a rising young star two more
years, or spend some of your roughly $1 million-per-game playoff bounty
to do it!"

Is there a dictionary nearby? Look up "star." Bryant is a star. Dwight Howard is a star. Gasol is not a star. This would lead most to beleive that Ariza will definitely never be a star.

"Jerry Buss should have opened the pockets a little wider. And Mitch Kupchak should have jogged the memory a little deeper."

The Lakers are currently on the top in payroll. And if any memory needs to be jogged, it's your's, Plaschke. Have you watched a single game with Ariza?

"Remember the last time the Lakers made a postseason acquisition of an
aging star that appeared to give them an embarrassment of riches and
render them unbeatable?

The year was 2004, and they signed two of them, Gary Payton and Karl
Malone, and you know what happened next. By the end of the season, the
fractured chemistry imploded in a Finals loss to the Detroit Pistons
that was so awful, afterward seemingly half the team either quit or was
traded."

Malone and Payton didn't hurt the Lakers. The Lakers missed the Finals in the previous year and got their the next year. Without Malone and Payton, they're eliminated by the Spurs again, and this time in the second round.

"Like Malone and Payton, Artest is a great acquisition in a fantasy
league. But this is reality, and nothing in NBA history has ever been
quite like Artest's reality."

So what makes him worse than Ariza? All I see in here is that Ariza can do some sort of disappearing act that helps the Lakers.

"Everyone knows how, as an Indiana Pacer, he was suspended for 73
regular-season games and the postseason after going into the stands to
confront fans and later punching one on the floor.

A long time ago, huh? Yeah, all of five years."

A real long time ago. Back when the Suns, Pistons, and Heat were great. When the Hornets sucked and the Cavaliers were irrelevant. When Steve Nash was MVP and Emeka Okafor was the next big thing.

"Did you know that he has also once shown up for practice in a bathrobe,
asked to take a month off because he was tired, and been jailed for 10
days for domestic assault?"

What does this have to do with basketball?

"Everyone said he was a changed man when he was traded from the Pacers
to the Sacramento Kings, but he was suspended for a playoff game in
2006 for a flagrant elbow, and the Kings lost that series to the San
Antonio Spurs in six games."

This was the same year that Artest took a team that wasn't expected to make the playoffs to the sixth game as the eight seed. Bryant was also suspended from a playoff game and he's a year older than the aging Artest. What good is he? All he did was lead the Lakers to a championship?

"Everyone said he changed again when he joined the Rockets, but in this
spring's playoff series against the Lakers, he was thrown out of two
games while finishing the series hitting 17 of 61 shots in the last
four games."

He also kept the Rockets in that series with the help of really only Shane Battier.

"And Trevor Ariza has done what, exactly? Agree to come off the bench?
Agree to guard the team's best shooter? Agree to take that shot when
Bryant couldn't?"

Artest won't need to come off the bench, he has always guarded the team's best shooter, and it's not like he'll decline to take shots.

"Ariza's only NBA mistake occurred this week, when he followed the lead
of his misguided agent, David Lee. By joining the Rockets as a miscast
free-agent star, the kid now faces the possibility of a career filled
with disillusionment and mediocrity, not to mention anonymity."

Artest joins the Rockets and they're championship contendors. Ariza joins the Rockets and he's destined for mediocrity. I thought this guy had "limitless potential."

"Ariza was more valuable to the Lakers than to anyone else. This was his
home, his comfort zone, the perfect spot for a supporting actor to
shine from the wings."

So he's a role player, rather than Artest who could play a major role if Bryant is injured or if Gasol isn't reliable.

"Why didn't Ariza realize this? And why couldn't the Lakers have given
him more time to realize this? This agreement occurred within two days
of the start of the free-agent period.

Couldn't the Lakers have given him a chance to come to his senses?

Couldn't they have met somewhere in the middle?"

Yes and they could have spent more on a player destined for mediocrity rather than on a player who will make them better.

"But, no, a flashy guy in a funky haircut beckoned, and the Lakers bit,
trading heart for Hollywood, quiet strength for false bravado, a rock
for a hard place."

As I said earlier, Artest is happiest when he's out of the spotlight, like with the Rockets. And that's exactly what he is with the Lakers. He's not flashy at all. Artest is a scrappy, hard-working player. Are we really using haircuts to judge players?

"While Lakers fans are now faced with an unsettled title defense, there
is a shining word of certainty for every other fan who recently watched
the NBA's next dynasty while shouting "Break up the Lakers."

Done."

I would have suggested a different approach to this article. I would have written more than two lines about why Ariza is better than Artest. But maybe that's just not possible.

Artest > Ariza

So, yeah, Trevor Ariza and Ron Artest swapped teams. Ariza is going to be saddled with more responsibilities in a team that MIGHT have trouble making the playoffs while Artest is going to be asked (and probably willing) to be a #2, 3, 4, 5, or even #6 option in a championship team.

Last we heard, Ariza (or rather Ariza's agent, David Lee... no, not the New York Knicks player) wanted $8-9 million. I think Mitch Kupchak knew what he was doing. He knew that Ariza wasn't going to get much more than the mid-level exception (projected to be around slightly less than $6 million per year). The only ones that could've paid him more were Detroit, Portland, and Toronto. Detroit already spent their dough on Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon. Portland and Toronto are busy wrestling over Hedo Turkoglu's services.

So Ariza explored his options. But when Ron Artest is roaming around freely, what were the Lakers supposed to do? Sit on their asses and watch another team snatch him up? Of course, I'd take Artest at a bargain. Especially since Artest actually WANTS to go to L.A. In a bizarre twist, Trevor went to Ron's former team, the Rockets. For essentially the same money L.A. put on the table. Way to go, Agent Assface.

Let's talk about the comparisons here. Do we seriously think that Trevor Ariza is as good as Ron Artest? Artest is more talented offensively than Ariza. He can post up, take it to the hole better, and make his perimeter shots. Sure, Ron takes wild shots... but in a better system and team, I think he'll be fine. Ariza became a dead-eye shooter, yes, but will he get those same looks in Houston?

Defensively, Artest is more physical and will get under the opponent's skin. Ariza is a very good defender but I don't think he's shutdown material. He's very good at anticipating the shot and the pass, yes (right, Denver?), but Artest is the better one-on-one guy.

And you've got to be kidding me when people say that Ariza has a higher ceiling. No disrespect to Trevor Ariza; I love his game. But I don't expect to see any Tracy McGrady breakout seasons from this guy. I'm willing to eat my words if he averages 25-6-7 next season because he now has room to do that with Houston not really having a go-to scorer aside from Aaron Brooks. But I just don't see Ariza getting much better than what he did in L.A. We already know what Ron Artest can do. He always brings it. Again, I understand that Ron Artest's shot selection has been porous but I don't think he'll be asked to chuck that many shots in L.A. And I don't think he'll complain about it, either.

But Ariza is younger, right? Of course. But you already know what I think of his ceiling. Was he supposed to be the next guy to step in when Kobe retires? Was Ariza going to be Kobe five years from now? I don't think age is a factor. Artest will probably retire, too, to resume his music career when Kobe retires. Maybe Ron and Kobe will do a song together. With Tyra Banks. Or Allure. If that's the concern, then the Lakers have to get their next superstar-in-waiting. But that's five years down the line. Let's talk about now.

I know what the Lakers are getting in Ron. Yes, he's a potential headache but I'd bank on him behaving. At the very least, I know Ron Artest will get suspended a few games next season. But it's not like Phil Jackson hasn't dealt with egos and nutcases in his coaching career. I'm sure y'all remember Dennis Rodman. Phil will just let Artest do his thang. And Kobe is definitely much more manageable now than when he was 25. There's no doubt that Ariza fit like a glove in L.A. but the Lakers look that much more dangerous if Artest fits in as well. And I think he will.

What are the Rockets getting with Ariza? Well, Ariza's only had one good year (and that was with L.A.). At his best, I can see him defend his man, make open threes (if there are any open threes), and hmmmmm... I guess, not much else. I just see him more as a complimentary player. Kinda like one they have now (Shane Battier). Ariza was more replaceable than, say, Lamar Odom (who is as versatile as you can get). But geez. I think Ariza really lost out in this deal (yes, I know... he's getting money but if you're a good NBA player, of course, you'll make millions).

What really gets me is the dealings between this Lee creature and Kupchak (who, by the way, has done a fantastic job recently as general manager).

"I can tell you definitively Trevor had an offer that was nine million more than what the Rockets offered and he decided to go with Houston."

So was that signing a way of sticking it to the Lakers? Oh, whoopee. He signed with Houston. Yay. TAKE THAT, L.A.

"It's like I told (Lakers General Manager) Mitch Kupchak. It was never about the money. It was about being at a place where he felt wanted and appreciated."

The Lakers resurrected his career and gave him a raise. Kupchak knew his market value. They traded for him. And if it wasn't about the money... how come they didn't sign with the Lakers then? It doesn't make sense to me at all. It was about respect? So why did Lee put him in a troubled situation? If he was going to place Ariza in a troubled situation then you might as well get him more money, right? There's also the potential that we might have already seen Ariza's ceiling. Ouch.

Agent Assface tried to play hardball and lost. I don't exactly blame Ariza for wanting to explore his options for more money (it's the first, and maybe only, big contract he's getting) but they should've known the marketplace better. I think if Artest wasn't free, negotiations would've gone longer and Ariza may still be a Laker today. Good luck in H-Town, Trevor. You played your role very well. I'm sure you're gonna be knockin' da boots.

Welcome the Tru Warier to L.A. I've always liked Ron Artest. And I'm happy that we have a nutcase in the Lakers. I don't think the Lakers will be bored in the regular season with Artest around. I know I won't be.

2009 Offseason Whirlwind Continued

All right. The whirlwind offseason continues. These are just verbal deals and they can't officially sign until July 8. People might still pull a Carlos Boozer. Anyway...

***Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva to Detroit***
The signing of Ben Gordon, I think, effectively ends Richard Hamilton's stint as a Piston. I don't know what to make of this team as everyone seems to be going their separate ways. Rasheed Wallace is going somewhere for sure and Tayshaun Prince seems to be on the trading block.

As for Charlie Villanueva, he's a great scoring option... but it's really hard to gauge this team until the offseason is over. Plus they still don't have a coach.

***Marcin Gortat to Dallas***
Erick Dampier seems to be on his way out... and Gortat earned his contract by playing well in the postseason. I guess, in the meantime, Dallas is just hoping that they don't get the Jerome James effect here (play well in the playoffs and then be an absolute bust after the huge contract signing). But they do get some depth in the frontline, if nothing else.

***Ron Artest to the L.A. Lakers***
Wow.

I've heard all the concerns already. He's not going to fit in the triangle. He'll hold on to the ball too long. Kobe and Artest don't get along, blah blah blah.

Remember when Dennis Rodman went to the Chicago Bulls? Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen supposedly wouldn't get along with Rodman, right? Since he was part of the Bad Boys? Well, those Bulls turned out some of the greatest teams in NBA history. Rodman respected the hell out of Jordan, Pippen, and Phil Jackson. I mean, for Christ's sake, they're all basketball players. Artest is going to be asked to play basketball, not rhythmic gymnastics. He'll be fine.

Well, same case here. Artest respects the hell out of Kobe Bryant. He also goes way back with Lamar Odom (if re-signed). And Phil is coaching this team. In the end, it should be fine. And I think this is an upgrade over Trevor Ariza. If Artest has his head in place, that is. Ron seemed like a Top 10 player in the league before that infamous brawl at the Palace. I don't think Trevor Ariza can get to that level.

***Trevor Ariza to Houston***
He lost. That's all I have to say.

Laker fans SHOULD be excited but that doesn't mean it's a title win for L.A. Every top team is stacking up at the moment. And Dwyane Wade and Steve Nash are probably smashing furniture at their homes this minute.

Pistons sign Ben Gordon, Charlie Villanueva

What in the hell happened to the Detroit Pistons?

What in the hell happened to Deeeeeeetroit Baaaaaaasketbaaaaaallllllll?

This was a hard-nosed group of perfect role players, committed to defense, rebounding, and being tougher than the other team. It was a well-coached team that was putting together streaks of holding opponents under 70 points. And now?

Now, they've spent over $90 million to acquire Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva - two good basketball players but two players that don't exactly scream blue-collar basketball like Motown once did.

Now, the two players that the Pistons have agreed in principle to add to the roster on July 8th aren't bad by any means. Ben Gordon is a really good scorer off the bench who can win games for you by taking over in the fourth quarter. In fact, BG was 17th in fourth quarter scoring this past season, So you know he can fill it up. But there was an issue with him over the past couple of years (which was more prevalent when Scott Skiles was the coach) about him starting. He would come off the bench but like most NBA players who think they mean more than they actually do, he'd rather have been starting.

The question is, will the five years and $55 million make not starting on the Pistons that much more acceptable for Ben? He's typically been a better and more efficient scorer off the bench than in a starting role. But he's also never had someone as good as Richard Hamilton in the starting role in front of him either. This move to acquire Ben Gordon and give him an obscene amount of money is not only risky, but it's perplexing due to the makeup of their backcourt.

Putting BG with Richard Hamilton isn't necessarily a bad thing if you have a good distributing point guard. But the third man in this ménage-a-guard is Rodney Stuckey. Stuckey is still trying to learn how to be an effective NBA point guard and now will be forced to keep Richard Hamilton AND Ben Gordon happy with ball distribution. How is that going to fly? We saw a big glimpse last year into Richard Hamilton's psyche when he voiced his displeasure with coming off the bench while the Pistons tried to figure out what to do with Allen Iverson. He certainly won't be gung-ho about sharing minutes and shots with Gordon.

Gordon signing for 5-yrs, $55m with Detroit is definitely:

Now for the Charlie Villanueva signing:

C-Nuv is a very versatile player, whose defense can be questionable but his scoring usually at least evens it out. He's a great mid-range shooter. He can score around the basket. He basically a hairless, lower-middle class version of what people wanted Tim Thomas to be in this league. And now he'll be asked to replace Rasheed Wallace, Amir Johnson, and possibly Antonio McDyess at a fair market price of five years and somewhere between $35 million to $40 million. That's actually a pretty good haul for both sides of this signing.

Villanueva will always be something of a wasted talent. He's the perfect NBA mismatch that just can't seem to figure out how to be consistent with what he does well. He's a good-enough outside shooter, a really good free throw shooter, a decent rebounder, and good at taking care of the ball. He averaged 16 points per game last season and 6.7 rebounds per contest for career-highs in both categories. His defensive rating also took a significant move in the right direction going from 112 in 2007-2008 to 106. That means he's giving up six fewer points per 100 possessions, which is a big leap.

He could be headed towards the right path of becoming a really good, reliable forward in this league. But there is still something that holds him back from being better that we can't really figure out. His alopecia makes him the NBA version of Dr. Evil's bald cat. You know there is some sort of danger element around him when he's on the court. He's capable of popping off for 30 or 40-plus on any given night. He's added a reputable three-point shot to his repertoire. But is he tough enough to play Detroit Pistons basketball?

Perhaps, that won't be an issue. It really depends on whom Joe Dumars brings in to be the fifth coach in eight years for a team that has been to six conference finals and won a championship. That seems really odd to me.

Villanueva signing for 5-yrs, $40 million with Detroit is definitely:

Let's look at the roster a year ago going into the season that had NBA title aspirations and then look at what the Pistons have so far this season:

2008-2009 Pre-Season Depth Chart

PG- Chauncey Billups, Rodney Stuckey
SG- Richard Hamilton, Aaron Afflalo
SF- Tayshaun Prince, Walter Herrmann
PF- Antonio McDyess, Jason Maxiell, Walter Sharpe
C- Rasheed Wallace, Kwame Brown, Amir Johnson

That's a really deep and damn good basketball team right there. Now let's see what they have so far for next season.

2009-2010 Summer Depth Chart

PG- Rodney Stuckey, Will Bynum
SG- Richard Hamilton, Ben Gordon, Aaron Afflalo
SF- Tayshaun Prince, Austin Daye, DaJuan Summers
PF- Charlie Villanueva, Jason Maxiell, Walter Sharpe
C- Fabricio Oberto

I mean, this is how they decided to blow their nearly $20 million in cap space? This is why they traded Chauncey Billups last November to wave the white flag and prepare for the future? This was worth frustrating your fans last year with a sub-.500 record, 8th seed in the East, and zero hope of competing for a title?

So you could acquire a Sixth Man of the Year perennial and the guy who got in trouble for tweeting at halftime?

Welcome back to the rest of the pack, Detroit. We've missed you.

Direction the Pistons are headed:

Today's Rumors and More: A Run-Through

NEW RUMOR: Gary Tanguay reporting from Twitter -- Garnett, Danny Ainge, and Wyc Grousbeck will all make the trek to Michigan to meet with Rasheed Wallace. It's unknown whether or not Paul and Ray make the trip too. If they do, then I'd say Ray Allen will be a Celtic next year. Why would the Celtics bring him along if they were planning on trading him anyway?

Cavs very interested in Artest, Ariza.

According to several league sources, the Cavs are attempting to land Houston Rockets free-agent forward Ron Artest,
and the pitch included a meeting with LeBron James on Tuesday night in
Los Angeles as both were in Southern California for various events.

In addition, a league source indicated the team is trying to attract Los Angeles Lakers swingman Trevor Ariza, who appears to be disgruntled with the Lakers' early attempts to re-sign him.

Ariza's agent, David Lee, told the Riverside, Calif.,
Press-Enterprise Wednesday, "I think I'm being optimistic when I say
it's not going anywhere." He added that Ariza might be ready to sign
elsewhere.

ESPN reported Ariza had been in contact with the Cavs coaching staff.

Both players are unrestricted free agents and are
being courted by several teams. Without a sign-and-trade deal, the most
the Cavs could sign a player to is a salary starting at around $5.6
million with their midlevel exception. Artest made $7.4 million last
season, Ariza $3.1 million.

Artest is believed to prefer to play for a championship contender
and is thought to be considering the Lakers and Celtics in addition to
the Cavs. With the Rockets facing the uncertain injury status of stars Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady, it is unclear how hard they will try to push to re-sign Artest.

The Rockets have had interest in Cavs free agent Anderson Varejao
in the past, which opens up some possibilities of a sign-and-trade
scenario. The Cavs, however, have said they want to re-sign Varejao.

Insight: This scenario has been discussed by both sides for quite some time now. The Cavs need a guy to take the load off LeBron on defense, and take on the role of guarding guys like Paul Pierce, Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant, Hedo Turkoglu, Vince Carter, and Paul Pierce. With a starting line-up of Mo Williams, Ron Artest, LeBron James, a free agent/Anderson Varejao, and Shaq, they'd impose both a threat on defense and on offense.

However, what catches my eye is "Artest is believed to prefer to play for a championship contender
and is thought to be considering the Lakers and Celtics in addition to
the Cavs." The Celtics too, need a player who can share some of the burden with their star small forward, Paul Pierce, on defense and offense. If the Danny Ainge can steal Artest away, we'd be looking at a more impressive Celtics team than we've ever seen since Garnett arrived in Boston.

With the vast improvement of Glen Davis, -- who seems to be leaning more towards coming back to the C's after they made a qualifying offer to him -- Rajon Rondo, and Kendrick Perkins, the Celtics have a whole new look. Ainge may look to make a big splash this year to give the team a revamped roster heading into 2009-10.

However, if the C's do manage to work something out with Artest, I doubt they'd make a move for Rasheed Wallace. While a big man is a team need, I'm hoping Artest would take less money in exchange for a better shot at the title, as the C's would then have the opportunity to sign a solid big man in the free agent market.

Trevor Ariza has also been rumored to go to the Celtics, along with teams such as the Cavs and Lakers. I'm not sure why he wouldn't return to LA, as he just won a title with them, but then again, the more effective players leaving the Lakers the better. Ariza offers some flexibility in terms of positions and roles. He is able to come off the bench and start, and is capable of playing both the small forward position and shooting guard.

It's a controversial rumor for sure. All I know is that whatever team succeeds in bidding for one of the two players automatically becomes favorites for the championship.

Celtics still looking hard at Rasheed Wallace.

The Celtics' interest in Wallace is
not for the long term, though. Wallace, 34, might be the most
intriguing of free agent candidates, his relationship with Celtics
forward Kevin Garnett a possible advantage.

Strickland confirmed the Celtics' contact with Wallace with a text message: "The interest is mutual.''

Asked
if Wallace, who earned $13 million with the Pistons last season, could
join the Celtics as a mid-level exception, Strickland said: "We will
see how things work out.''

Charlotte, Cleveland, Orlando, and San Antonio have also shown interest in Wallace.

Ainge
said he did not contact any players directly, nor has he made contract
offers. Ainge said he has been on the receiving end of many more
inquiries from agents in recent days than he has proferred.

"We'll
just continue to stay in contact with free agents to see if there is
something we can do,'' Ainge said. "That could take some time. Free
agents are talking to several teams. I don't anticipate anything
dramatic happening any time soon. We have plenty of time left.

"We
have an interest in a lot of free agents, on different levels. We have
different needs. I think everybody's trying to get a feel to where the
market is. I think a lot of players start on July 1st with big dollar
signs in their eyes, and then some of them get it, and some of them
don't. And some of them come looking for anything later in the summer.

Insight: Danny Ainge is one tricky fella. Rasheed Wallace, Ron Artest, and Trevor Ariza are all on the Celtics radar among others. They need a big man, and a guy to back up Paul Pierce. But wait! They want to get Bill Walker some minutes as well. But, if they don't sign a free agent to back up Pierce and make Walker the second string small forward, we can't be sure that Walker will come through. After all, he didn't get too many minutes in his first year.

I can only tell you guys one thing I'm 100% positive about: Danny Ainge sure brews up a lot of questions.

Chris Broussard is telling us on ESPN that Rip Hamilton will not be traded by the Pistons, Avery Johnson most targeted to replace vacant coaching position.

Insight: Interesting. Detroit feels that a backcourt of Stuckey, Gordon, and Rip Hamilton could be one explosive scoring machine. They'd have Gordon coming off the bench, something that he did for some time when playing for Chicago.

Avery Johnson is a primary target for the Pistons in their search for a new coach, as they fired Michael Curry just days ago. It has also been reported that Bill Laimbeer is not a candidate. Surprise, surprise.

Clippers sending Zach Randolph to the Grizz.

The team [the Clips] agreed to trade power forward Zach Randolph to the Memphis Grizzlies for swingman Quentin Richardson, sources told ESPN.com's Chad Ford. The deal was first reported by the Los Angeles Times.

The trade can't be finalized until the league establishes the salary cap July 8 and lifts the moratorium on player movement.

Insight: Zach Randolph is on the move again, this time to the Grizz. That's it. It's final. Chris Wallace is officially one of the league's worst executives. On a team which includes Hakim Warrick, Rudy Gay, Mike Conley Jr., and Marc Gasol, why the heck would you want to trade for Zach Randolph?

I understand that they get rid of another locker room cancer in return for Randolph, Quentin Richardson, but after Randolph's stint with the Clippers, I'm convinced he won't find a city he can truly call home. He's just too much of a loudmouth -- loves to get involved in altercations, loves to make a fuss.

Is that really the direction Memphis is heading?

Uh Oh, The Bulls Are In Trouble

Moments ago, Yahoo!'s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Detroit Pistons have agreed in principle to sign free agent shooting guard Ben Gordon. Bulls fans, we can now commence the panicking.

Gordon led the team last season with 20.7 points, and his offense was a huge reason why the Bulls put up such a valiant fight against the Celtics in the playoffs. His clutch scoring was unmatched on the Bulls, as he averaged 36.3 points per 48 minutes in situations with 5 or less minutes left in the game and a score difference of 5 or less points. He also had a sweet cajones dance that will be sorely missed.

Of course, there will be plenty of folks who will argue that Gordon is a one-trick pony, a one-dimensional player who excels in one area and provides anywhere from adequate to poor production in all other areas. This may be true, but that one dimension that he happens to possess is scoring, and you can't win without scoring more than the other team. Moreover, he scores consistently and in a number of ways. Short range, long range, free throws, wide open and with hands swarming his grill, BG finds ways to score night in and night out, and few players in the league can be trusted to make the vital shot with the game on the line.

I'm not saying that this will automatically plunge the Bulls into the abyss of the bottom rungs of the Eastern Conference with the dregs of the NBA society, but the Bulls have to do something to lessen the impact of Gordon's departure. As it stands, we now have no go-to scorer with games on the line, and Vinny Del Negro's crunch time playbook consists of doodles of Transformers and a sticky note reminding him to let one player do his best to take on the other team's five with the game on the line. We had Gordon to take on that thankless job last year, and he did it successfully at an alrming rate. John Salmons was asked to try his hand at that role, and he did respectably, but, unless VDN learns some actual strategy that the team can use late in close games, we're going to need someone who can score at will.

Maybe I'm naive, but I do think the Bulls have the means to make up for the loss of Gordon. We have a good mix of expiring contracts, young potential, and intriguing talent to make some moves, and I'm in favor of focusing our efforts on landing either Toronto's Chris Bosh or Milwaukee's Michael Redd.

Trying for Bosh has been argued to death in Chicago's fan circles (mention Bosh on Blog-a-Bull and prepare for a deluge of comments), but Brad Miller, Tyrus Thomas, and James Johnson/Taj Gibson/future 1st rounder for Bosh and Marcus Banks might be feasible. We get our man, a proven superstar with post presence and athleticism, and the Raptors get rid of Banks' lousy contract while getting the serviceable Miller and the freakishly athletic Thomas (the numbers work here, with the Johnson/Gibson/1st rounder part excluded). Miller would replace Bosh's rebounding and some of his offense, and his contract would expire after the season, freeing up cap space for 2010. Thomas could thrive in a new environment, and, at 23, his highly touted potential is still there. Bosh can leave in 2010, so the Raptors would be wise to at least explore what they can get for him now.

Redd can also walk in 2010 with his early termination option, and, since the Bucks seem to be slashing payroll (refusing to offer Charlie Villanueva a qualifying offer and trading Richard Jefferson for Bruce Bowen and cap space) and starting from scratch, they might be open to moving him. Offering Miller and Thomas (and maybe a future pick) once again would work financially, and Miller and Salmons would also work, provided we took someone else like Damon Jones or Dan Gadzuric to match salaries. Milwaukee could use Miller to back up Bogut or replace Charlie V for a year, then clear cap space the next season, and Salmons would be a direct replacement for Redd (or they can try their luck playing the "Tyrus Has Potential" game). The Bulls would be in need of a backup center in either case, but we would at least get the scorer we need (and an upgrade over Gordon in all other areas) and be better off for it.

At any rate, I hope I've made my point after all this ranting. Gordon is pretty much gone, and Bulls fans have reason to worry. The front office needs to move fast to bring in big talent, or Chicago could find themselves duking it out with the Timberwolves and the rest of the league's trash for lucky lotto balls in 2010.

(Photo from Bulls.com)
