Ron Artest to join the Lakers; hangover pending

One of the most popular mixed drinks of all time is the 'Rum and Coke.' When I'm pouring (even with my heavy hand) I like to add a bit more Coke, as its sweetness helps to take some of the bite off of the potent rum. Not too far below Los Angeles, across the border into Mexico, they drink Rum and Coke too, but they have a different name for it. They call it 'Ron con Cola' (easily translated as 'rum with cola').

In Los Angeles, they will now be mixing up 'Ron con Kobe's' for (at least) 82 games next season. The Los Angeles Lakers will add a little extra something to their already-potent concoction, as they intend to sign Ron Artest at the conclusion of the moratorium period (July 8).

While the 'Ron con Kobe' mixer may seem somewhat hokey, it's actually quite fitting in this situation. In my experience with every big night of drinking, you might end up having the time of your life...or you might end up hugging the toilet begging for mercy - you just never know. This is the gamble that the Lakers may be taking with signing Artest. It is a high-risk high-reward situation. Either this could help propel them to a second-consecutive championship, or it could serve to be a distraction causing turmoil within the team.

From a basketball standpoint, this is a fantastic signing for the Lakers. Artest, in my opinion, is one of the most complete players in the game when all facets are considered. He is the league's premier perimeter defender, a scorer capable contributing inside or outside, a good rebounder, has good size and strength, and even has some point-forward capabilities.

What will be his most important contribution to the Lakers will be defending the best players on opposing teams. This will come in handy for Los Angeles when they face Western Conference foes like Carmelo Anthony or Brandon Roy, or a potential finals matchup against Cleveland with LeBron James. What it means is that Kobe Bryant won't have to exhaust all of his injury battling with stars on the defensive end - providing even more energy to dominate a game offensively. Bryant (a player of great intensity himself) will surely appreciate Artest's tenacity, as he witnessed it firsthand throughout their playoff series this year.

Of course, Artest has come with his fair share of distractions throughout the years. He's well past the Malice at the Palace at this point, but his on-court physicality and lack of control has led to more flagrant fouls and ejections than probably necessary. He's also shown his fair-share of 'crazy' off the court with his outlandish interviews. Clearly, Artest is a strong personality for a team to reign in. Let's just say, he has a little 'Captain' in him - which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Luckily, Lakers coach Phil Jackson is no stranger to strong, irreverent personalities, as many point to his notable success of getting the most out of Dennis Rodman.

But with every mixed drink, one has to consider the mixer - both in type and in quantity. With the right combination, the bitterness of the alcohol can barely be tasted. Fortunately for Los Angeles, their mixers are of the utmost quality AND quantity. Taking a look at their current roster, they have a spoils of riches. Arguably the best player of this decade in Bryant, one of the best bigs in the game in Pau Gasol, another potential beast in the middle with Andrew Bynum, and a collection of some of the best role players a team could ask for. While it looks like Trevor Ariza will be elsewhere (he's verbally committed to Artest's Rockets, as a matter of fact), the Lakers would still like to re-sign Lamar Odom. If this happens, the Lakers will be embarrassingly stacked and a difficult to match up with. One area of weakness that they may still need to address is speed at the point guard position. However, they won a championship without it, so this may not be much of a concern for them at this point.

So with every night of drinking, you never know what the night has in store for you, and frankly, neither do the Lakers. But one thing's for sure, this ongoing party in Los Angeles is going to be a thing of sheer primetime entertainment. One that can even be enjoyed and appreciated in a sober state.

Is this signing going to bring the Lakers the night of their lives, or have them praying to the porcelain gods? What's your verdict?

Artest > Ariza

So, yeah, Trevor Ariza and Ron Artest swapped teams. Ariza is going to be saddled with more responsibilities in a team that MIGHT have trouble making the playoffs while Artest is going to be asked (and probably willing) to be a #2, 3, 4, 5, or even #6 option in a championship team.

Last we heard, Ariza (or rather Ariza's agent, David Lee... no, not the New York Knicks player) wanted $8-9 million. I think Mitch Kupchak knew what he was doing. He knew that Ariza wasn't going to get much more than the mid-level exception (projected to be around slightly less than $6 million per year). The only ones that could've paid him more were Detroit, Portland, and Toronto. Detroit already spent their dough on Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon. Portland and Toronto are busy wrestling over Hedo Turkoglu's services.

So Ariza explored his options. But when Ron Artest is roaming around freely, what were the Lakers supposed to do? Sit on their asses and watch another team snatch him up? Of course, I'd take Artest at a bargain. Especially since Artest actually WANTS to go to L.A. In a bizarre twist, Trevor went to Ron's former team, the Rockets. For essentially the same money L.A. put on the table. Way to go, Agent Assface.

Let's talk about the comparisons here. Do we seriously think that Trevor Ariza is as good as Ron Artest? Artest is more talented offensively than Ariza. He can post up, take it to the hole better, and make his perimeter shots. Sure, Ron takes wild shots... but in a better system and team, I think he'll be fine. Ariza became a dead-eye shooter, yes, but will he get those same looks in Houston?

Defensively, Artest is more physical and will get under the opponent's skin. Ariza is a very good defender but I don't think he's shutdown material. He's very good at anticipating the shot and the pass, yes (right, Denver?), but Artest is the better one-on-one guy.

And you've got to be kidding me when people say that Ariza has a higher ceiling. No disrespect to Trevor Ariza; I love his game. But I don't expect to see any Tracy McGrady breakout seasons from this guy. I'm willing to eat my words if he averages 25-6-7 next season because he now has room to do that with Houston not really having a go-to scorer aside from Aaron Brooks. But I just don't see Ariza getting much better than what he did in L.A. We already know what Ron Artest can do. He always brings it. Again, I understand that Ron Artest's shot selection has been porous but I don't think he'll be asked to chuck that many shots in L.A. And I don't think he'll complain about it, either.

But Ariza is younger, right? Of course. But you already know what I think of his ceiling. Was he supposed to be the next guy to step in when Kobe retires? Was Ariza going to be Kobe five years from now? I don't think age is a factor. Artest will probably retire, too, to resume his music career when Kobe retires. Maybe Ron and Kobe will do a song together. With Tyra Banks. Or Allure. If that's the concern, then the Lakers have to get their next superstar-in-waiting. But that's five years down the line. Let's talk about now.

I know what the Lakers are getting in Ron. Yes, he's a potential headache but I'd bank on him behaving. At the very least, I know Ron Artest will get suspended a few games next season. But it's not like Phil Jackson hasn't dealt with egos and nutcases in his coaching career. I'm sure y'all remember Dennis Rodman. Phil will just let Artest do his thang. And Kobe is definitely much more manageable now than when he was 25. There's no doubt that Ariza fit like a glove in L.A. but the Lakers look that much more dangerous if Artest fits in as well. And I think he will.

What are the Rockets getting with Ariza? Well, Ariza's only had one good year (and that was with L.A.). At his best, I can see him defend his man, make open threes (if there are any open threes), and hmmmmm... I guess, not much else. I just see him more as a complimentary player. Kinda like one they have now (Shane Battier). Ariza was more replaceable than, say, Lamar Odom (who is as versatile as you can get). But geez. I think Ariza really lost out in this deal (yes, I know... he's getting money but if you're a good NBA player, of course, you'll make millions).

What really gets me is the dealings between this Lee creature and Kupchak (who, by the way, has done a fantastic job recently as general manager).

"I can tell you definitively Trevor had an offer that was nine million more than what the Rockets offered and he decided to go with Houston."

So was that signing a way of sticking it to the Lakers? Oh, whoopee. He signed with Houston. Yay. TAKE THAT, L.A.

"It's like I told (Lakers General Manager) Mitch Kupchak. It was never about the money. It was about being at a place where he felt wanted and appreciated."

The Lakers resurrected his career and gave him a raise. Kupchak knew his market value. They traded for him. And if it wasn't about the money... how come they didn't sign with the Lakers then? It doesn't make sense to me at all. It was about respect? So why did Lee put him in a troubled situation? If he was going to place Ariza in a troubled situation then you might as well get him more money, right? There's also the potential that we might have already seen Ariza's ceiling. Ouch.

Agent Assface tried to play hardball and lost. I don't exactly blame Ariza for wanting to explore his options for more money (it's the first, and maybe only, big contract he's getting) but they should've known the marketplace better. I think if Artest wasn't free, negotiations would've gone longer and Ariza may still be a Laker today. Good luck in H-Town, Trevor. You played your role very well. I'm sure you're gonna be knockin' da boots.

Welcome the Tru Warier to L.A. I've always liked Ron Artest. And I'm happy that we have a nutcase in the Lakers. I don't think the Lakers will be bored in the regular season with Artest around. I know I won't be.

2009 Offseason Whirlwind Continued

All right. The whirlwind offseason continues. These are just verbal deals and they can't officially sign until July 8. People might still pull a Carlos Boozer. Anyway...

***Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva to Detroit***
The signing of Ben Gordon, I think, effectively ends Richard Hamilton's stint as a Piston. I don't know what to make of this team as everyone seems to be going their separate ways. Rasheed Wallace is going somewhere for sure and Tayshaun Prince seems to be on the trading block.

As for Charlie Villanueva, he's a great scoring option... but it's really hard to gauge this team until the offseason is over. Plus they still don't have a coach.

***Marcin Gortat to Dallas***
Erick Dampier seems to be on his way out... and Gortat earned his contract by playing well in the postseason. I guess, in the meantime, Dallas is just hoping that they don't get the Jerome James effect here (play well in the playoffs and then be an absolute bust after the huge contract signing). But they do get some depth in the frontline, if nothing else.

***Ron Artest to the L.A. Lakers***
Wow.

I've heard all the concerns already. He's not going to fit in the triangle. He'll hold on to the ball too long. Kobe and Artest don't get along, blah blah blah.

Remember when Dennis Rodman went to the Chicago Bulls? Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen supposedly wouldn't get along with Rodman, right? Since he was part of the Bad Boys? Well, those Bulls turned out some of the greatest teams in NBA history. Rodman respected the hell out of Jordan, Pippen, and Phil Jackson. I mean, for Christ's sake, they're all basketball players. Artest is going to be asked to play basketball, not rhythmic gymnastics. He'll be fine.

Well, same case here. Artest respects the hell out of Kobe Bryant. He also goes way back with Lamar Odom (if re-signed). And Phil is coaching this team. In the end, it should be fine. And I think this is an upgrade over Trevor Ariza. If Artest has his head in place, that is. Ron seemed like a Top 10 player in the league before that infamous brawl at the Palace. I don't think Trevor Ariza can get to that level.

***Trevor Ariza to Houston***
He lost. That's all I have to say.

Laker fans SHOULD be excited but that doesn't mean it's a title win for L.A. Every top team is stacking up at the moment. And Dwyane Wade and Steve Nash are probably smashing furniture at their homes this minute.

Cavaliers Hot For Ron Artest, Trevor Ariza

So the previously unsubstantiated speculation regarding the Cavs as a possible destination for unrestricted free agent swingman Ron Artest were not so far off, after all.

It's definitely not a done deal, by any stretch, but Artest may have emerged as the no. 1 target for Cavaliers GM Danny Ferry as free agency opened its doors on Wednesday morning. From the Plain Dealer's Brian Windhorst:

According to several league sources, the Cavs have been in contact with Houston Rockets free agent forward Ron Artest. It even included a face-to-face pitch from LeBron James Tuesday night in Los Angeles as both were in Southern California for various events.

Artest, who is an unrestricted free agent after a contract that paid
him $7.4 million with the Rockets expired, is being courted by several
teams. Artest is believed to prefer to play for a championship
contender. In addition to the Rockets, the Cavs may be getting
competition from the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers for his
services.
With the Rockets facing the uncertain injury status of stars Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady, it is unclear how hard they will try to push to re-sign Artest. They are pursuing Orlando Magic free agent center Marcin Gortat.

If the market is not there for Artest, he can definitely use the Cavs to have another career year on a team that will be on national TV all the time. He could also get infinite exposure for his game if the Cavs make another deep playoff run and even win their first-ever championship next spring.

But Artest isn't the only lockdown swingman defender that Ferry is pursuing.

From ESPN.com's Chris Broussard:

With at least five teams pursuing Ariza, the Lakers are currently
unwilling to pay him more than the $5.6 million mid-level exception.

"They're letting him go," one of the sources said.

Cleveland is making a hard push for Ariza, and the Cavaliers' coaching
staff was speaking with him on Wednesday. While Cleveland can only
offer the mid-level as well, Ariza's disappointment with the Lakers'
stance has moved other suitors ahead of his current team.

The Rockets, Clippers, Raptors and Blazers are also showing interest in
Ariza. Portland and Toronto could each offer more than the mid-level
exception.

Finally. Two players that have been on my radar as perfect fits for the Cavs have finally emerged as the two players that Ferry wants the most. Not a "stretch big" like Charlie Villanueva or Rasheed Wallace. But Ron Artest and Trevor Ariza.

And with Orlando looking likely to lose Hedo Turkoglu to the Western Conference's Blazers pretty soon, the Magic's mismatch problems will be a thing of the past. But if they do resurface, a guy like Artest or Ariza is the perfect panacea for a team that really doesn't need many more parts to become an NBA champion.

At 24, Ariza would definitely be a long-term solution on the wing in Cleveland. Some sources on Tuesday night even speculated that the Cavs are in the hunt for a wing player who can slide LeBron to the power forward spot next season, and the 6'8" Ariza -- a small forward by trade -- fits the bill.

He can even play some shooting guard, and he's definitely quick enough to cover other two's. Regardless, he makes the Cavs deeper, better on the perimeter on both ends, and a little bit more athletic. Add him with other young pieces like Delonte West, Mo Williams, and a hopefully re-signed Anderson Varejao, and you're finally talking about Ferry building a nice core around LeBron.

Something tells me Thursday's going to be a big day. Stay tuned.

Yao Ming's injury leaves the Rockets in limbo

Yao Ming's hairline fracture in his left foot suffered in the Western Conference Finals in May has not healed as expected and is threatening his return to the hardwood next season.

Now the Rockets must consider on whether they should let doctors perform a fifth surgery in three years on Yao's foot. He suffered the same injury in May 2008 but continued to play in the Beijing Olympics that summer even though it was not fully healed.

If the Rockets choose not to perform surgery and let his foot heal with time so he can be ready by October, they risk the chance of it not healing properly and forced to perform a late surgery. This would result in Yao missing a large portion of the regular season. If they do opt for surgery now, the Rockets fear they're pushing Yao to his breaking point.

Yao came into the league his rookie weighing 290lbs. Seven years into his NBA career, he has put on an extra 20lbs of muscle, which could only put more on pressure on his size 18 feet.

This foot injury not only affects Yao's future, but it leaves Rockets GM Daryl Morey with several questions this offseason. Does Morey re-sign Ron Artest to a big contract even though the Rockets won't be in title contention if Yao misses the majority of the season? Does Morey let Tracy McGrady's contract expire so he can clear cap space for 2010's free agency? Or does he attempt to trade T-Mac for a veteran to fill the void of Yao's absence? The problem is that the only offers Morey has been getting for T-Mac are bad contracts and subpar talent.

Yao Ming also the option to opt out of his contract next year. If he chooses to, do the Rockets give Yao a large extension even though he turns 30 years old next year?

My opinion?

The Rockets let Yao's foot heal a few more months, if it doesn't heal properly then opt for surgery even if that means he misses part of the regular season. They also should let T-Mac's contract expire and hope that he rehabs his knee so he can hopefully return to his old form. The Rockets do not re-sign Artest unless it is a one year contract. These decisions will most likely take the Rockets out of title contention, but I do not believe they have much of a choice. They should develop their younger players, Aaron Brooks, Carl Landry, Kyle Lowry, and Von Wafer. They also have some high-potential draft picks in Chase Budinger, Jermaine Taylor, and Sergio Llull.

If the Rockets follow these decisions, they will go through another championship-less season, however they will be approximately $30 million under the salary cap coming into the summer of 2010.

The free agency period opens tonight at 12:01AM. Daryl Morey and the Rockets will have a lot of work ahead of themselves.

Ming, who has battled foot injuries for the past couple of years, went down recently during this year's Rockets' playoff run. With Yao, many people thought they could have taken down the eventual-champion Los Angeles Lakers.

Along with Ron Artest (if he re-signs), Tracy McGrady, and Yao, the Rockets' upcoming season was seen as exciting and a year that they would take a step forward. They've always been a respected franchise and a playoff team in the Yao era, but the past year and the next few years after acquiring Artest have been the window of opportunity that they could win a championship, a chance they rarely come across.

And the Rockets might crash and burn if Yao doesn't manage to get back on his feet (literally... kinda). That opportunity I mentioned above got the Houston fans rejuvenated and pumped up for next season. After hearing this devastating news, the 'Kets (my new cool nickname for Houston. Like it?) may not have as many rear ends in seats as they would've liked next season. That is, knowing that Yao will definitely be out for the bulk of the '09-10 campaign and probably the rest of his career.

Here was my quick thoughts from yesterday's article which broke the news on Celtics 17:

"I can't believe I'm saying this, but this injury is very saddening to me. Yao was a great person and a great basketball player."

And sad I am. Although he was a dominating center when healthy, something us Celtics' fans despise, Yao was always a favorite of mine. He was so soft-spoken, yet had some pretty gifted leadership qualities. He was seen as a guy who could get a firm message across without having to raise his voice (too much).

Yao, on and off the court, was also very patient with teammates. Although I'm sure he's been frustrated at times, but he's not the one to transform into an angry Dirk Nowitzski or a nasty Kevin Garnett. I probably wouldn't have a liking for KG's attitude either if he wasn't a Celtics fan. And Dirk? Well, he used to be fun to watch. But now? I'll save my words just so I don't get booted from this site.

Yao was also very upbeat and positive, with both the fans and younger teammates. He was an inspiration to all of China (and Asia probably), as his success here blossomed once he entered the NBA. I never once saw him lash out during a media press conference, even though there was probably plenty of times when another player other than Yao would have.

Yao Ming was another guy who never stopped pushing forward as well. He never gave up on the squad he was guiding, and continued to be optimistic, no matter the obstacles they had to face or the circumstances they were in. Take a look at this year for example. Although it seems Houston's team played with more flow, they still took quite a hit when All-Star wingman Tracy McGrady suffered an injury. They not only lost a locker room leader, but an offensive threat as well.

However, Yao, with some help from Artest and Rick Adelman, brought the Rockets on a trip with them the Western Conference semi-Finals to play the Lakers. They did end up losing in seven games, but continued to fight back and persevere without Tracy McGrady and, for the better part of the series, Yao Ming himself. Yao then watched from the sidelines, but did everything he could to encourage and motivate his guys.

And never mind his amazing people skills, the kid had and still has some great talent on the basketball court. He can rebound very well considering the pressure applied to the lower part of his body, and has a natural soft touch under the basket. He was able to hit the short open jumpshot too (.545 career shooting percentage).

Yao, surprisingly because of his size, was an above-average passer as well. Although his assist numbers don't show it, he was good at dumping the ball off to open forwards on the other block when he was being guarded by multiple defenders.

I'm sure you've noticed my subtle hints when trying to imply that Yao is one of my favorites by now. And not only me, but worldwide. Basketball fans all over will slump back into their chairs and sink down lower and lower as they begin to realize the seriousness that involved as this.

The fans aren't the only ones. When the Rockets drafted Ming number one overall in the 2002 NBA Draft, they were ecstatic about receiving Yao, a 7-5, 296-pound basketball phenom who was ready to take the world by storm. Happy knowing that they will have a monster of a player down low in a couple of years. Reassured that they won't have to worry about their future for the next 10 years (which would be 2012) with him as the face of the franchise.

Now? They're praying -- no, BEGGING -- that this injury-prone Houston Rockets team can take more than a couple of heavy hits. They're going to have to without a full season or more from Yao Ming, the Great Wall of China.

Cavaliers Rumor Mill: Charlie Villanueva, Ron Artest Linked to Cleveland

Two huge stories broke on the NBA landscape on Monday, both of which could have a tremendous impact on the Cleveland Cavaliers and free agency.

One was the big news that Yao Ming could likely miss all of the 2009-10 season -- and he might even be done for the rest of his career. This news stems from the left foot injury he sustained during the Houston Rockets' second-round series with the Los Angeles Lakers.

The second bit of news was the the Milwaukee Bucks, whose cost-cutting trade for Richard Jefferson led many to believe that the franchise had tried to earmark some money for Charlie Villanueva, did not extend a qualifying offer to the 25-year old power forward on Monday. This makes Villanueva, who just completed his fourth year in the league, an unrestricted free agent.

Before, signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers meant getting a chance to play with LeBron. Now, with Shaquille O'Neal in the fold, free agents could be lining up for the opportunity to play with LeBron and Shaq.

I mean, if you were an NBA player who was never going to be a franchise-type guy any time soon, wouldn't you like the opportunity to be the third wheel behind these two future Hall of Famers? Especially with Shaq now talking about wanting to play two more years after this one and the likelihood of LeBron staying in Cleveland riding on a 2010 championship or bust?

Villanueva and Houston's Ron Artest sure think so. At least according to some sources and online social networking sites.

Fist, Villanueva. Some sources close to the Cavs were saying following the Shaq trade that the team's next agenda was to acquire a "stretch" power forward who could hit the 3 and keep defenses honest. The Cavs currently have two guys -- LB and Shaq -- who are at their best in the paint, whether it be posting up (Shaq) or driving to the basket (LeBron). Having a post-up power forward is useless, and starting and giving major minutes to Anderson Varejao (if he is even brought back) could be even worse.

In comes Villanueva. And never fear, our guy Brian Windhorst at the Cleveland Plain Dealer was already all over the news on Monday:

Villanueva has a good relationship with [Mo] Williams, who became close to
him the two seasons they played together in Milwaukee. Williams could
serve as a recruiter much in the same way he helped bring another of
his close friends to the Cavs, former Bucks teammate Joe Smith, when he
was a free agent last March.

Villanueva also has a long-standing relationship with LeBron James. The
two were in the same high school class and played with each other in
various tournaments and summer camps as they were growing up. Following
their senior year of high school, Villanueva and James became closer
while taking part in two national All-Star Games, including the
McDonald's All-American Game in Cleveland. They have kept in touch ever
since.

The Cavs have been looking for a "stretch" power forward like
Villanueva for some time. Because he is a good mid-range and decent
long-range shooter (35 percent on 3-pointers last season), he is
potentially a good fit alongside players such as James and Williams,
who like to drive and kick out passes. Add in O'Neal, who succeed
earlier in his career with stretch power forwards such as Robert Horry
in Los Angeles and Antoine Walker in Miami, and that option creates an
even better fit.

Getting Villanueva would be a masterpiece move by Danny Ferry. Many fans were and still are willing to settle for 35-year old Rasheed Wallace. But after not being able to use the draft as an avenue to add young talent to this nucleus, Ferry now has a chance to add a 25-year old power forward who is still a few years away from his prime and can fit like a glove right away.

Villanueva is coming off a banner year where he posted career numbers of 16.2 points and 6.7 rebounds. The former Connecticut Huskie was an absolute beast in the dog days of January and February.
In 18 games in January (10 which were starts), Villanueva averaged 20.2
points and 7.0 rebounds while shooting 51.7 percent from the field and
44.1 percent (30-for-68) from 3-point range. In 11 games during
February, all of which were starts, he put up 21.6 points and 6.6
boards while shooting 47.6 percent from the field and 42.1 percent
(24-for-57) from downtown.

Not only that, but Villanueva, one of the first athletes to become a Twitter celebrity, had a series of "tweets" indicating a desire, however subtle, to play for the Cavs:

Cleveland fans are showing me mad love on twitter, appreciate the love
3:59 PM Jun 28th from web

well, twitterland
like I said there will be more trades to come, very interesting, Shaq
to Cleveland, nice, all Cleveland need is a PF now
6:28 AM Jun 25th from web

Villanueva has also been asked about the subject of joining the Cavs before, most recently by ESPN Radio's Freddie Coleman.

Most Cavs fans out there are very well aware of the proposed marriage between Villanueva and the wine and gold. But another curve ball on Monday impacted Yao Ming's future and the future of Rockets unrestricted free agent Ron Artest.

ESPN.com's Chris Broussard -- one of our favorite NBA guys here at the 'Tude -- was on with Kenny Roda of ESPN 850 in Cleveland on Monday and dropped this bombshell on the Wine & Gold Nation:

Broussard: The Yao Ming situation...this name I'm about to throw out here is baggage-infested, all right? But what about a Ron Artest?

Rodda: I'll take him yesterday, Chris. How do the Cavaliers work that out? Because right now, free agency-wise, all they have is the midlevel at, what, $5-6 million or whatever that is. How do you get a Ron Artest from the Rockets to the Cavaliers?

Broussard: Well, this is the thing. Does Yao Ming's situation change the outlook for the Rockets? Maybe they might say, "You know what, we're not going to contend next year. Yao's going to be out most of the year, maybe even all of the year...do we just let T-Mac's money come off the books and not sign Ron Artest to a two- or three-year deal worth $10 million a year so we can have room in 2010 to rebuild?"

If the Rockets understand that they can't build around Yao anymore, why sign Ron Artest? Now, I'm speculating. But after talking with some people around the league and some agents, why sign Ron Artest to a $10 million-a-year deal?

Rodda: How do the Cavaliers go about getting him, though, Chris?

Broussard: Then you look at the teams with money. Sacramento, do they want Artest? They're not winning anything any time soon.

Rodda: Been there, done that, right?

Broussard: Atlanta? They're all right at the three and on the wing. Do they bring Ron there? Portland has Turkoglu in their sights. Toronto? I don't really think Ron's a fit there. Memphis? No. Oklahoma City? No.

It sounds crazy, but Ron Artest, if Houston doesn't re-sign him, he may have to settle for the midlevel. I just mentioned all the teams that are out there, and this is from talking to a lot of people from around the league who themselves are kind of reading the situation. But you've got to wonder who's giving him more than the midlevel exception. Detroit, I don't think they're bringing them in there after the brawl.

Rodda: So the Cavaliers, with their midlevel available, they might be a team, if that's what he has to settle for, that he'd be a good fit for.

Broussard: He's going to have to go for the money because this is probably his last contract. But if he doesn't get more than a midlevel exception, I know he would love to play with LeBron and Shaq. And again, years are important to him, but he would at least consider a one-year deal. And for Cleveland, you probably want to do it for a year because you don't want to eat up all of your cap space for 2010.

I'm just throwing out other possibilities because now it's Yao. A couple of days ago, Villanueva was a pipedream. But things are happening that are opening up a lot of options for the Cavaliers.

Ron Artest has been a favorite Cavalier target of mine since early in the 2005-06 season when the Indiana Pacers were shopping him. At this point, however, a one-year deal would not be ideal because the Cavs would not have his Bird Rights after this season. However, it would certainly be the one move to completely put the Cavs over the top for next year while still maintaining cap flexibility in 2010 for Chris Bosh, who looks to have emerged as the clear-cut target for the Cavaliers' front office.

But Villanueva gives them that young piece for now and the future. Heck, signing Villanueva for the midlevel and possibly letting Anderson Varejao walk (and promoting Darnell Jackson into the rotation as the backup four) would still give the Cavs more than enough cap space to sign Bosh next summer.

So what do you think, Cavs fans? Villanueva or Artest? Both are unrestricted, and both are reported to want to come to Cleveland badly. If you had the choice, who do you sign and why?

Yao Ming Possibly Out For Next Year... Career?

"What do you think a career-ending injury for Yao Ming means for the NBA?" - Zach Harper

"It puts us back in the Stone Age for centers." - Matt Moore from Hardwood Paroxysm

This news that Yao Ming could not only miss most of next season but could possibly be done playing in the NBA forever isn't just bad for the Houston Rockets or the gigantic Chinese center; it's bad for the NBA altogether. It's not the death of the center but it's definitely putting the center position into a coma.

Here's the list of competent, reliable centers in the NBA right now:

Yao Ming
Dwight Howard
Tim Duncan
Al Jefferson

That's pretty much it. There are potentially competent centers like Andris Biedrins, Andrew Bogut, Spencer Hawes, Nene Hilario, Greg Oden, Brook Lopez, Chris Kaman, Emeka Okafor, Kendrick Perkins, and Joakim Noah. And of course you have your guaranteed busts like Hilton Armstrong and Andrew Bynum.

But the list of guys that will actually matter at the center position over the next five years is just as thin as Austin Daye. Yao Ming isn't just a good center. He's the center (poor choice of words) of the Chinese basketball universe. He's the idol of a billion people. He's the pride of the Houston Rockets in a similar way that Hakeem Olajuwon was before him. It doesn't mean he's regarded as the same level of player and it doesn't mean that he's as popular as The Dream. But he's the hope for another title in Clutch City before the next decade is done.

Yao Ming is only 29 years old and perfectly capable of carrying a team through some rounds of the playoffs. He's an underused offensive force. He's a defender that many guards dream of dunking on but few attempt to climb. He's a skilled passer and a lock at the free throw line. He's fortune and promise. He's the number one option that's treated like a number two.

He's also injury-riddled. He's missed 81 regular season games over the past four years and 10 playoff games. And now that proneness for injuries is at a career-threatening level. In 2006 he broke a bone in his left foot that required inserting three pins to strengthen it and help it heal. He had to take six months off in order for it to heal properly. In 2008, he broke his left foot again, this time with a stress fracture. And early in May of this year, he once again broke his left foot.

Yep, that SAME left foot.

Normally, they'd just treat it, let it heal and try for next season. It's a feeling they know well between Yao and Tracy McGrady. It's a feeling that Daryl Morey, Rick Adelman, and Leslie Alexander are always prepared to examine and deal with.

But this time, it's different. This time, the hairline fracture in his left tarsal navicular bone isn't healing at all after 52 days of rest. Here's a quote from the story in the Houston Chronicle:

For now, the emphasis is on getting Yao back on the court. The surgical treatment options could include placing a pin inside the foot, a bone graft or even realigning the foot to operate differently. Cleveland Cavaliers center Zydrunas Ilgauskas underwent similar procedures, reducing his high arch to a flatter foot position, an option that could be considered for Yao, Clanton said, though his arch is not as high as Ilgauskas' was.

That sounds alarming to me. Not only does it sound alarming but it also sounds like he is a coin-flip away from being forced to retire. And if he has to retire, it puts the Rockets in a situation that is close to a lose-lose.

Now they have to find a replacement with an injury exception and risk paying a huge luxury tax payment if Yao comes back. They have to figure out how to potentially replace Ron Artest if he bolts for another team. They have to pray that guys like Luis Scola, Aaron Brooks, and Carl Landry can continue progress and evolve as NBA role players that are more than role players. And most of all, they have to pray for Tracy McGrady to return.

The prodigal max contract is once again the most important player in the Houston Rockets organization. He's recovering from some serious knee injury-ness that will be another big setback in his fading star. If the NBA were the universe (and for many of us it is), he'd be a star that has transitioned from being a white dwarf to a black dwarf (that's dying star, astronomy knowledge for you - the one thing I semi-retained and possibly got wrong).

Tracy McGrady's comeback story is the only saving grace for the Rockets this year. He's carried the team before but he was in much better physical condition. He's able to do great, amazing things with 80% capacity that few in the NBA have ever been able to do at 100%. But much like Paris Hilton, there's very little tread left on this tire. Getting him to 80% would a miracle in and of itself, much like getting Yao Ming to be healthy enough to be the best center in the league once again.

And that again is the fate of not only the Houston Rockets but the fate of Chinese basketball and the NBA - the reliable center just isn't that reliable anymore.

will concede quietly, but they know it's probably much worse."

It looks like the heart and soul of China basketball may have been misjudged. His foot problem is just not getting better.

Unfortunately for Yao, his career, which still has an enormous amount of potential, is likely over. I can't believe I'm saying this, but this injury is very saddening to me. Yao was a great person and a great basketball player.
