            <title>Say It Ain&apos;t So: Is The &quot;R&quot; Word In Store For The Bulls?</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<meta http-equiv="CONTENT-TYPE" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"><title></title><meta name="GENERATOR" content="OpenOffice.org 2.0  (Win32)"><meta name="CREATED" content="20090702;19121000"><meta name="CHANGED" content="20090702;20042700"><style>

	-->
	</style>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">All signs point to it. The Chicago
Bulls have been stockpiling young, cheap players the past couple
seasons. They have several expiring contracts on the roster and have
yet to move them. The front office drafted two power forwards, which
likely spells the end of Tyrus Thomas' tenure as a Bull. The team is
comprised mostly of recent draft picks (7 players have three years or
less experience entering the upcoming season). The front office has
used made thinly veiled references to it, mentioning the "process"
and "learning curve" that will require patience and time. Most
recently, we let our top scorer from last year walk. Yep, the signs
all lead to one thing.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">The Chicago Bulls are rebuilding.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">I know, the R word is a dirty, vile,
horrible label to put on a team, and this team isn't completely
hopeless just yet. The front office could still pull off some huge
deal to bring in a star to complement the young nucleus of Derrick
Rose, Joakim Noah, and Luol Deng (his massive, long-term contract
means he's a Bull for at least another two years, so we may as well
accept him as our SF for the forseeable future). But, in all honesty,
who can the Bulls get? More importantly, can the Bulls offer a
package for a star that no other team can top? I think not.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Like I already mentioned, the writing
has been on the wall for longer than we may like to believe here in
the Chicagoland area. Since the Michael Jordan dynasty ended in the
90's, the Bulls have never been a legitimate contender, and whenever
they got close, the front office made the wrong move at the crucial
moment. Elton Brand was let go, only to bring in Tyson Chandler. When
Hinrich, Deng, and Gordon stunned the NBA by shutting down Dwyane
Wade in the playoffs and exceeding everyone's expectations, the Bulls
spent their money on retaining Kirk Hinrich for the long haul and
going balls-out for Ben Wallace. When that failed, and the Bulls had
to decide to re-sign Gordon and/or Deng, they chose Deng, who has
since been an oft-injured, scarcely productive flop.
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Now, the Bulls are mired in mediocrity,
with no substantial cap space for this season and little hope for
landing a star next offseason. Sure, there are plenty of stars who
will potentially hit the market in 2010, but why would they come to
Chicago? Most of the top potential free agents seems to be winners,
who would obviously like to play for contenders. Cleveland will
probably bring back LeBron, and the rest of the top talent will
likely end up with Boston, Orlando, Cleveland, Los Angeles, or
another viable contender (perhaps Denver). So if we don't land a star
now, and if that failure persists in 2010, we'll have loads of cap
space to either waste on undeserving talent or to rebuild.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">So if we rebuild, what does that mean?
Well, the two best examples from recent memory are the Boston Celtics
and the Oklahoma City Thunder. Both teams began with one star player
(Paul Pierce and Kevin Durant, respectively), and they had to wait to
slowly gather the right pieces to complement their stars. In the
meantime, they cleared cap space, gutted their rosters, and collected
a combination of expiring contracts and young players on rookie
contracts. They then let the kids play, keeping the ones who thrived
and letting go of those that didn't.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">After that step is where the two teams
too different approaches. The Celtics took note of two teams in
miserable positions (the Timberwolves and, ironically enough the
SuperSonics, who have since become the Thunder), realized that they
were both ready to rebuild, and decided to throw all their efforts
and cap space into getting a star from each team (Kevin Garnett and
Ray Allen, respectively). The all-or-nothing approach could have
potentially doomed this team and forced them to start over yet again,
but they won a championship the very next season, justifying their
huge gamble.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">The Thunder have yet to take that
massive gamble, instead preferring to continue giving youngsters the
opportunity to prove themselves. Jeff Green and Russell Westbrook
seem to have worked their way into the nucleus alongside Durant, and
new draftee James Harden will get the chance to join that core in the
future. The Thunder appear willing to keep relying on draft picks to
strengthen their team, and, though it has taken time, it has been
working, slowly but surely. The team is clearly better than they were
two years back when Durant began his career, and they still have
plenty of cap space should they decide to take a gamble.
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">The Thunder's approach is much slower,
and it mirrors the approach the Bulls themselves took after the MJ
dynasty ended. Unfortunately, the "stars" the Bulls decided to
build around were Hinrich and Deng, and Reinsdorf was gave them too
much money and too many years to leave room for more talent, and his
judgment leaves the team trapped in the middle of the conference.
Luckily we have a true young star in Rose now, and we have already
found a good, young complement for him in Noah.
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">The Bulls could, of course, pull off a
move for some sort of temporary upgrade to try to contend next year,
as Milwaukee did with Richard Jefferson last year. However, the Bucks
found that their gamble was little more than a stall, getting them
nothing more than assurance that they wouldn't get embarrassed
throughout the season. The Bucks have since let Jefferson go,
accepting their need to rebuild and preparing for a potentially long
and painful period of trial and error to get back on track. Unless
the Bulls pull off the miracle move and bring in a savior along the
lines of Bosh, Wade, or Michael Redd (and I have little faith in any
of these things happening), then, I have to grimace and grudgingly
admit what is appearing more and more like the inevitable: the Bulls
will have to rebuild. I hope we find that miracle cure, but to expect it would be naive. This team is <a href="http://mvn.com/bullriding/2009/07/uh-oh-the-bulls-are-in-trouble.html">in trouble</a>, and the front office is faced with the decision to make one last gamble, or to prepare for the long and thankless task of rebuilding.<br /></p><p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"></p><p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />

            <title>Varejao Opts Out, Becomes Unrestricted Free Agent</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<div style="text-align: center;"> <a href="http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=anderson%20varejao&amp;iid=3899810" target="_blank"><img src="http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/a/7/5/1/PicImg_Cavalers_vs_Lakers_52b1.JPG?adImageId=1764328&amp;imageId=3899810" alt="Cavalers vs. Lakers" width="500" border="0" height="369" /></a><script type="text/javascript" src="http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js"></script></div>
<div style="text-align: center;"><em><strong>Could Anderson Varejao be headed elsewhere this summer?</strong><br /><br /></em></div>

Dan Fegan strikes again.<br /><br />In what is no surprise to anyone who has followed the Cavs over the past year or so, <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4298237">Anderson Varejao has decided to exercise his player option and opt out</a>. <br /><br /><blockquote><b>Forward <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=2419">Anderson Varejao</a>
did not exercise the final year of his contract on Tuesday, making him
an unrestricted free agent this summer, a source close to the player
told ESPN.com's Chad Ford.</b><br /></blockquote>By opting out of his deal for next season, Varejao is leaving $6.2 million of guaranteed money on the table to try and test would could be a bare market this year.<br /><br />It's been reported that Varejao could be seeking a contract with a per year earning of upwards of $9 million. In this economy with very few teams having that type of cap space, it's unlikely Varejao will get an offer that is around his asking price.<br /><br />Right now it looks like there will be 5-6 teams that could challenge the Cavs for Varejao's services and offer a lucrative contract. Those teams with significant cap room are: Detroit Pistons ($19 million), Oklahoma City Thunder ($13 million), Memphis Grizzlies ($13 million), Sacramento Kings ($7 million), Portland Trail Blazers ($9 million), and Toronto Raptors ($9 million, if they let Parker, Marion and Graham walk).<br /><br />Out of those teams it looks like Varejao may get a look from 3-4 teams.<br /><br />The Pistons have bigger fish to fry than Varejao and are looking at some top free agents.<br /><br />The Toronto Raptors are looking for a perimeter scorer and it's questionable how far under the cap they'll get at this point.<br /><br />The Oklahoma City Thunder look like they want to add a young player and make a splash in free agency, so Varejao might be a back-up plan with them needing some bigs there.<br /><br />The Memphis Grizzlies were rumored to be interested in Varejao last off-season so if things fall through with their other targets (reportedly David Lee) then some of that interest could be re-kindled. <br /><br />The Sacramento Kings were adamant about including Varejao in the Mike Bibby talks a couple years ago and that could parlay the Kings into offering all of their cap space to Varejao should their other options dry up.<br /><br />The Portland Trail Blazers have reportedly been looking for toughness and defense to backup Aldridge and Varejao would be a great fit there. The only problem is that he might be too expensive.<br /><br />The good news for the Cavs is that Varejao isn't going to garner a ton of interest from the teams with major cap room and that Varejao isn't looking like anyone's primary option. <br /><br />While the Cavs can't match any offer because Varejao is unrestricted, the Cavs do look like they're going to put re-signing Varejao as their #1 priority and should get it done if Varejao keeps his demands reasonable (you never know with Dan Fegan).<br /><br />It's been speculated that the Cavs might be willing to pay up to $9 million per year for Varejao but that might change once he hits the open market and the Cavs see what's available.<br /><br />The right thing for the Cavs to do would be to re-sign Varejao at a reasonable price. <br /><br />(P.S - And no, re-signing Varejao to a long-term deal doesn't mean the Cavs won't have 2010 cap space and not be able to sign Bosh. The 2010 cap space is an illusion and there's no way the Cavs will be able to have enough cap room to field a competitive team. So don't be worrying about that.<br /><br />The problem with Varejao will be determining his value to the team. While I'm sure Fegan and Varejao see it as one thing, I'm also sure the Cavs see at as another.<br /><br />Varejao is a good player but he's not worth $8.5-$9.5 million a year. Maybe if it was on a short-term deal (2-3 years), then it could be possible. But there's no way I can see the Cavs paying him that type of money over a long commitment.<br /><br />Varejao's worth is probably in the $7.5 million range (give or take a half million) for a decent amount of years. <br /><br />If Varejao and Fegan can't come to grips with reality, then the Cavs will probably be forced to either do a one-year deal at a high rate or sign-and-trade Varejao.<br /><br />While the Cavs may not want to sign-and-trade Varejao, it may ultimately come down to that.<br /><br />The one good thing is that Danny Ferry and Dan Fegan have since repaired their relationship since they hit rocky times last summer while negotiating Varejao's previous contract. Having a good working relationship is critical in working with agents and crossing the line when the two parties start getting into uncomfortable territories.<br /><br />So will Varejao end up staying with the Cavs? Right now it's anybody's guess but with the way the market looks and how bad the Cavs want Varejao back, it looks like it's in the Cavs favor. <br />]]></description>

            <title>NBA Outsider: Oklahoma City Thunder Draft Follow Up</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<p><em>Bill Ingram of <a href="http://www.hoopsworld.com/">Hoopsworld.com</a> tells how Sam Presti's deceit gives the <a href="http://www.mvn.com/nba/thunder">Thunder</a> a bright future.<br /><br /></em>Oklahoma City Thunder general manager Sam Presti did a masterful job of hiding his intentions leading up to the 2009 NBA Draft. With rumors floating around about him wanting to take Ricky Rubio and move Russell Westbrook to the two or perhaps taking a shot at Hasheem Thabeet to hold down the middle, he managed to surprise a few people by landing the best shooting guard in the draft class.</p>
<p>James Harden is the real deal, a shooting guard with star potential and one who brings the Thunder everything they lacked last season: additional scoring in the backcourt. His ability to score in a variety of ways and get to the free throw line make him a lethal combination next to Durant and Westbrook.</p>
<p>At the end of the day, the Thunder added to what is already one of the best young cores in the NBA with one more player who will be a star two or three years down the line. In Durant, Jeff Green, Westbrook and Harden, the Thunder are one move and two-three years of experience from being the team to beat in the Western Conference.</p>]]></description>

            <title>Slipping Away: Glen Davis&apos; Return Becoming Less Likely</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<a href="http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=Glen%20Davis&amp;iid=4792245" target="_blank"><img src="http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/3/d/e/7/NBA_MAY_10_903d.JPG?adImageId=1719273&amp;imageId=4792245" alt="NBA: MAY 10 Celtics at Magic - Eastern Conference Semifinals - Game 4" border="0" width="500" height="444" /></a><script type="text/javascript" src="http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js"></script><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b><br /><a href="http://www.celticsblog.com/2009/6/28/928657/kidd-in-play-and-other-rumors">Jason Kidd rumors and more from CelticsBlog</a>.</b></font><br /><br />With the Draft and the majority of blockbuster trades behind us, a question still looms concerning the Celtics. A question that, at the moment, I don't want to answer: Will we re-sign Glen Davis? Davis' last words of <i>solid </i>encouragement (I mean statements that suggested that Davis was surely going to return back to the Celtics) to the fans dates back to... well, I won't say it just to save you a trip to the ER. <br /><br />Davis implied that he'd love to come back to Boston and play off the bench <a href="http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/articles/2009/06/28/what_is_next_baby_step/?rss_id=Boston.com+--+Boston+Celtics+news">just recently</a>, but like other times when he's talked to the reporters, he's also strongly implied that he's "curious," and would like to look around the market to see what he can get.<br /><br />And let me tell you folks, this big baby is going to get a monstrous contract. Not just big, because I know you were expecting me to say that. Teams with young players like the Thunder possess of raw talent and would like to know that they have a future All-Star big man down low -- no matter how small. Despite the fact that Davis is merely 6-9, he compensates as he is a hefty 289 pounds. He also averaged 15.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game in the playoffs, in which he substituted for the injured Kevin Garnett. I'm sure OKC would enjoy a slice of him.<br /><br />You might as well call Davis a bull of a basketball player. The budding power forward is capable of slowing down massive centers such as Shaquille O'Neal and Dwight Howard. Now, understand me when I say "slow down." I'm obviously not saying Davis could completely shut down the two All-Stars, but with help (like Perkins or Garnett), the "Ticket Stub" can surprise most people when facing up against guys like O'Neal and Howard.<br /><br />The fact that Davis will be satisfied in any basketball city scares me. Read what he has to say:<br /><br /><blockquote><b>"I'll be very excited to come back to the Celtics or go to a team where I might start. Wherever I'm at, I'll be happy.''</b><br /><br /></blockquote>And believe me, Davis truly does mean "anywhere." The big man would be happy on a contender where he is a factor off the bench, but he is also looking to start if he happens to land on a team that may be a touch below the "contender" category. So that means teams like the Kings, the Grizzles (although that's quite a stretch), and the Warriors are all in consideration. That's not a good thing.<br /><br />Teams like the Kings, Grizzles, or Warriors may be an undesirable destination for most free agents (of course, those only playing for money would book a flight to any one of those cities in a heartbeat), but for Davis, shockingly, they still may be a valid competitor in the "race for baby," as I like to call it. Here's why.<br /><br />The Kings, although being notoriously seen as the laughingstock of basketball (yes, basketball, not just the NBA), would take a step forward by acquiring Davis. They have good young big men on their roster, some being Spencer Hawes, Donte Green, and Jason Thompson. Sacramento MUST add one more young big guy to that list, and what do you know, Glen Davis is a perfect match. He would compliment Hawes especially as his outside game could be another passing option for the skilled Hawes down low when he finds trouble shaking free of defenders. Both Thompson and Green are very athletic, and I find that Davis, when paired with one of those two, could become part of a dangerous open court game.<br /><br />The Grizzles have many guys tradeable on their roster that could bring in some fresh blood. Rudy Gay (although he's one of those tradeable players), an explosive small forward, would help Davis immensely when trying to find an open shot. Gay would compliment Davis in so many aspects of the game, especially when Davis is trying to get open. Gay will soon be drawing constant double and maybe even triple-teams, and it would be deadly for the other team if Davis could sneak down low for the easy two or creep out for a wide open jumper.<br /><br />The Warriors would be able to offer Davis an enormous amount of cash, as well as giving him the opportunity to become an offensive player no one had predicted when seeing him the first time as an NBAer. He would flourish under Don Nelson, the offensive mastermind that is partly running the Golden State Warriors team. With the new backcourt of Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis, an addition of Davis would basically make them the second coming of the 2005 Phoenix Suns -- only Amar'e Stoudemire's role would be played by a noticeably smaller player. <br /><br />Davis sure does love to play defense, which all three of these teams scarcely seem to focus on. He's followed in his hero's footsteps, Kevin Garnett, to become an undeniably intense defender. I'm sure he'd be extremely disappointed to find that these teams don't thrive as much on defense as the Celtics do.<br /><br />Every Boston Celtics fan that is existing on the face of this Earth would give anything to see Glen Davis come back. Hopefully, he'll realize the support he has under him in Boston from both the fans, coaches and players, and return to blossom as one of the league's best.<br /> <div><br /></div>]]></description>

            <title>Cleveland&apos;s Case Of Xenophobia, Kid Congo Edition</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=sports,%20sports,%20fear,unknown&amp;iid=252649" target="_blank"><img src="http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/0249/1d087d8d-f09e-41da-9a60-aaf9cb720673.jpg?adImageId=1687024&amp;imageId=252649" alt="Businesspeople Wearing Blindfolds" width="500" border="0" height="333" /></a><script type="text/javascript" src="http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js"></script><br /><i><b>Cleveland Cavalier fans all over the country right now.</b></i><br /><div align="left"><br />Xenophobia. (zěn'ə-fōb', zē'nə-) A person unduly fearful or contemptuous of that which is foreign, especially of strangers or foreign peoples.<!--//<br / / / / / / / / / / / / / / />//--><!--EOF_DEF--><br /><br />Cleveland fans, right now whether you recognize it or not, you're suffering Xenophobia. Hate to break it ya, but you are. Not from the fear of foreign people but from the fear of the unknown.<br /><br />The backlash and anger unleashed from picking Christian Eyenga, a.k.a. Kid Congo, with the 30th pick has been unreal. It's been pretty unanimous in the feeling that Kid Congo was a bad pick. <br /><br />But here's my question for the whole ordeal: how in the world can we, as fans, say that this was a bad pick, when we don't have the slightest clue about this kid? That's my main beef.<br /><br />We can say all we want that this was a terrible pick, Ferry's terrible, blah, blah, blah but how can we say that without seeing this kid in action? Sure there's <a href="http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Christian-Eyenga-5493/">prospect</a> <a href="http://draftday.nbadraft.net/players/christian-eyenga">profiles</a> on this kid, as well as <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTew2KzGH94">YouTube! highlights</a> of him too, but neither of them are nearly enough for any fan to form a well-developed opinion on the kid. <br /><br />At least with prospects like Sam Young, Chase Budinger, DaJuan Summers, etc., there is national exposure of them. We're able to see prospects like them on T.V., on highlight videos, during March Madness, etc. On top of that they're well-known prospects that have tons of information collected about them and there's pretty much a consensus among scouting services about their strengths, weaknesses and what type of player they project to be. With all the information available to us with those type of players, we're able to form a decently informed opinion of the kid and it's at the point where we can talk about and even judge them when they're pick if we want to (even though that's not smart, you get what I mean).<br /><br />With Eyenga, there is none of that. Which is why all the people bashing this pick are xenophobes (had to tie it in). They're afraid of the unknown, in this case Kid Congo, and because they're not too sure on him the automatic human reaction is to bash it, or be angry about the pick. The same thing happened last year with JJ Hickson. Not a lot of people knew a whole bunch about him and all of a sudden bashed him because they were ignorant when it came to the pick. The national media, message boards, and fans all over wanted guys like Kosta Kofous, Darell Arthur, Chris Douglas-Roberts, etc., because they were guys that people had a lot of information on and were able to make a decently informed opinion on.<br /><br />People are just like animals. When animals come into contact with something that they're unfamiliar with or not comfortable with, they automatically become suspicious, edgy and sort of protective. Similar to humans, when we come into contact with something unfamiliar, we become sort of protective, uncomfortable and scared. This is the same with Kid Congo: because we're unfamiliar with him, we become kind of uncomfortable and scared (which leads to anger). <br /><br />Before I go on any further, let me just say this: in no way am I trying to defend the pick by Danny Ferry. Heck <a href="http://mvn.com/cavalierattitude/2009/06/danny-ferry-you-screwed-this-draft-up.html">my first initial reaction was quite similar to Amar's</a>. But after thinking about it, I came to the conclusion that we can't really come to a judgment on this pick because we have no knowledge of the kid. So if we are ignorant on a certain subject, how can we say it's a bust or not? We can't, which is why I don't get the outrage by the Cavs fans across the nation.<br /><br />I know part of the outrage is about Kid Congo himself but it seems like most of the rage is directed towards not picking proven college players like Sam Young, DeJuan Blair, Chase Budinger or DaJuan Summers or at least better known "projects" like Derrick Brown. I can definitely see that though because, again, these are players that fans are more comfortable and know more about them.<br /><br />But let me say this: if anybody expects the 30th pick in the draft to be able to contribute his rookie year for a team like the Cleveland Cavaliers (66 win team last year, best record in the NBA, Central Division champions, made it to the Eastern Conference Finals, etc.) then they're crazy. Not to mention, the 30th pick in what was considered to be one of the weakest drafts in NBA history.<br /><br />Sure guys like Sam Young, DeJuan Blair, Chase Budinger are billed as "NBA ready" players who can contribute right away, but we're talking about the Cavs here. Not the Oklahoma City Thunder or the Minnesota Timberwolves; the Cleveland Cavaliers.<br /><br />With free agency still left along with trades still being allowed, I'd be willing to bet we add a minimum of two rotational players to the roster, if not more. So taking that into consideration, where does a rookie (30th pick in the draft) seem to fit in and contribute right away? Including our current roster and the likely addition of at least a couple of rotational players via trade and/or free agency, our rotation will probably look at least 9 deep. And that's not including guys like JJ Hickson, Darnell Jackson and maybe even Tarence Kinsey, who might get playing time this year. Do you guys realize Joe Smith, Wally Szczerbiak, Sasha Pavlovic and Daniel Gibson, really didn't see the floor that much versus the Magic? Joe Smith only played in 2 games of where he had 10 or more minutes. Sasha basically played two games of 20-minute ball and that&nbsp; was it for the series. Wally Szczerbiak had two DNP's and basically was forced to play the last 3 games because of the inefficiency of the bench. Daniel Gibson got 6 minutes the first 3 games before 64 minutes the next 3.<br /><br />Now it can be said Mike Brown screwed the pooch on who to play and who not to play but the point is, if he was forced to play veterans and those veterans didn't play much to begin with, how do you expect him to play a rookie who was picked 30th overall in the Eastern Conference Finals? Because really, let's get serious here: it doesn't matter what happens in the regular season anymore, it's all about the playoffs. And how in the world would you expect a rookie to contribute anything more than a couple minutes in the Eastern Conference Finals, let alone the Finals?<br /><br />I understand an argument can be made using Daniel Gibson and Courtney Lee as examples rookies playing big roles for their playoff teams and being picked late in the draft. But those types of cases happen very, very, very rarely. <br /><br />The bottom line is that Ferry really didn't see anyone who could contribute right away at #30, as he should have, and saw it worth the risk to take a flier on a guy who they see as having high potential then rather taking a guy who wouldn't likely contribute this year anyway.<br /><br />Aside from those points, the pick also goes deeper than that.<br /><br />Let's remember that all 1st round picks have guaranteed money being paid to them, basically as soon as they're picked. So basically, once they're picked they're locked into the rookie scale right away. The rookie scale for the 30th pick is $989k. So for a player that wasn't likely to contribute at all during his rookie season, the Cavs would have been paying around $1 million for him to sit the bench. Now I know there's a possibility that the rookie could have contributed but instead of that $1 million being paid for him to sit the bench, that $1 million can be allocated to different resources. It can helps us sign a free agent, he could helps us via trade, etc.<br /><br />Now I can understand why fans would say "well if Dan Gilbert is willing
to spend, then why is he worried about $1 million". But it's the fact
that he doesn't want to spend the money, it's just he wants to do it
wisely.<font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><span class="Estilo5 Estilo52 Estilo52 Estilo52"></span></font><br /><br />And before you go criticizing Dan Gilbert for being "cheap", look at what the Los Angeles Lakers did. They had the 29th and 42nd picks in the NBA draft. Instead of picking those players, they instead sold those picks to teams for money. Because like the Cavs, they figured that those players wouldn't likely be able to contribute right away and they were better served getting cash for those picks and helping them to sign free agents, or in their case re-sign Trevor Ariza and/or Lamar Odom. Now they are the NBA Champions but does that mean they're being cheap too? Or are they just being smart with their money? At least the Cavs will get a player out of their pick, instead of just giving it away.<br /><br />Now getting back to the players actually available at the pick, let's take an deeper look at them.<br /><br />Sam Young. Thought of as one of the safest picks in the draft and a guy who could contribute right away. Right now the Cavs need a defender first and foremost on the wing and he's billed to be a good defender. So how could this not be the perfect fit? Well right now I don't see how he has a position in the NBA. It's my belief that he's too small to guard most SFs and too slow to guard most SGs. So where does he play then? That's my problem. But if Ferry really would have wanted him, he would have gotten him. Let's not forget that Ferry and Pittsburgh coach, Jamie Dixon, are pretty tight and has pretty much all the information possible on him, and DeJuan Blair. So if he passed on him, it's probably for a good reason.<br /><br />DeJuan Blair. A steal at #30, right? Where does he fit? He can't play with Varejao because that would be a disaster offensively. Not to mention, why draft another undersized forward/center after drafting two last year, in Darnell Jackson and JJ Hickson? Or how about our newest acquisition, Shaquille O'Neal. How would he fit in with him? Or better yet, what about those knees? <a href="http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/ian_thomsen/06/26/weekly.countdown/index.html">As one story in SI.com said</a>: "Most team doctors red-flagged him, which prevented the GMs from taking Blair in the first round."<br /><br />Derrick Brown. I certainly was a big proponent and was kind of upset that we didn't take him. But at the same time, he wasn't going to contribute now, as well as Eyenga, so why not take a flier on a guy with a very high ceiling who won't cost anything, as opposed to a guy who will cost you something and doesn't have as high of a ceiling?<br /><br />DaJuan Summers. He was another guy I liked but there were some questions on him. Why couldn't he put up better rebounding numbers? Why didn't he play any defense? Why couldn't he do anything else beside spot-up shoot? Why didn't he get "it"? Summers was a guy filled with potential but loaded with downside too.<br /><br />Chase Budinger. Probably not on the top of the list as far as guys the Cavs passed on but still up there. The problem with Budinger will never talent level, how athletic he is or how good of a player he is offensively. It's mentally and defensively where the questions are. So considering that, why would the Cavs take him if their biggest weakness on the wing is defense?<br /><br />Let's keep things in perspective here: this is the draft. Not free agency. Not trades. This is the draft. A championship caliber team like the Cavs doesn't make its major improvements through the draft. They do them through trades and in free agency. So why all of a sudden, is Ferry the worst general manager in the league? Just a few days beforehand he was the best after trading for Shaq.<br /><br />The point is that this is last in line as far as places we'd look to improve in. No guy was going to contribute right away so why not take a flier on a guy that could possibly be better than anybody else on the board at the time. Is it guaranteed? No. Would Sam Young, Derrick Brown, DeJuan Blair be safer picks? Yeah probably. But none of them have the type of potential that Eyenga has.<br /><br />And yes GMs far too often get caught up with the potential word but the Cavs are in a position where they can take a low-risk move like this and hope that it pans out.<br /><br />The 30th pick in the draft isn't going to make or break our chances at a title and it isn't going to make LeBron going to go to New York. What will though is what we do via trade and through free agency, which we should be more worried about. Those are places where we can't afford to take high risks or make mistakes. Those are places we should be worried about, not the draft.<br /><br />The whole point of this article is basically for some new perspective on the situation. Will this kid turn out to be a good pro? Who knows. But that's the whole point: who knows. We can't judge or criticize a situation by knowing very little on the subject at hand.<br /><br />So kick back, relax, and let's see where Eyenga and this draft class is 3 years down the road from now, because that's when it'll be fair to assess this draft. Not now, only 2 days after the draft. And not 1 month into the season either. But 3 years.<br /><br />I know it's frustrating to see us pass on some guys that would have been safer, more comfortable picks for the fans but let's wait and see what happens the rest of the off-season before we go freaking out.<br /><br />But just remember one thing about Eyenga: he is Kid Congo.<br /><br />And oh yeah...don't be a Xenophobe.<br /><script language="javascript">AC_FL_RunContent = 0;</script><script src="http://cache.lexico.com/js/AC_RunActiveContent.js" language="javascript"></script><script type="text/javascript">var interfaceflash = new LEXICOFlashObject ( "http://cache.lexico.com/d/g/speaker.swf", "speaker", "17", "15", "<a href="\"http://dictionary.reference.com/audio.html/ahd4WAV/X0004700/xenophobia\"" target="\"_blank\""><img src="\"http://cache.lexico.com/g/d/speaker.gif\"" border="\"0\"" / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /></a>", "6");interfaceflash.addParam("loop", "false");interfaceflash.addParam("quality", "high");interfaceflash.addParam("menu", "false");interfaceflash.addParam("salign", "t");interfaceflash.addParam("FlashVars", "soundUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fcache.lexico.com%2Fdictionary%2Faudio%2Fahd4%2FX%2FX0004700.mp3&clkLogProxyUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fdictionary.reference.com%2Fwhatzup.html&t=a&d=d&s=di&c=a&ti=1&ai=51359&l=dir&o=0&sv=00000000&ip=446ebdd1&u=audio"); interfaceflash.addParam('wmode','transparent');interfaceflash.write();</script><noscript><a

            <title>Danny Ferry: You Screwed This Draft Up</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image" style="display: inline;"><img alt="ferry.jpg" src="http://mvn.com/cavalierattitude/ferry.jpg" class="mt-image-none" style="" width="453" height="289" /></span><br /><br />Far be it for me to be a Negative Nancy.<br /><br />Last year, when the Cavs selected little-known power forward J.J. Hickson from N.C. State, the masses were up in arms. They didn't know Hickson. Picking him at 19th overall was cause for an uproar. People automatically labeled him a bust. They wanted a wing player. Chris Douglas-Roberts, they said. Bill Walker, I said (or was saying before that draft).<br /><br />But after the pick was made, I came on here and defended Ferry, Hickson, and that pick. I liked it. <a href="http://mvn.com/cavalierattitude/2008/06/meet-jj-hickson.html">Here is exactly what I had to say about the Hickson pick immediately after it was made amidst the mass disappointment:</a><br /><br /><blockquote><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>In 31 games with the Wolfpack, Hickson achieved double-figure scoring
25 times and reached 20 points on seven occasions. Hickson also notched
10 double-doubles.</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>All that...as a freshman.</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>Which is why you should be excited.</b></font><br /><br /><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><b>This pick was all about building on a core group of young players for
the future. Leave the "LeBron/Jay-Z" rumors to the clowns who have
nothing better to do with their lives. The Cavs can't live in constant
fear of LeBron, and they have to make the best pick for today as well
as tomorrow. And based on the kind of player Hickson can become within
the next five years, they certainly did that on Thursday night.</b></font><br /></blockquote><br />Today, in the wake of the 2009 NBA Draft, I cannot say that I maintain the same attitude. Because I know that Ferry effed up. And effed up badly.<br /><br />That's because when Ferry selected Christian Eyenga, a 6'6" swingman out of Congo, with the 30th pick of the draft, there <i>were </i>better players available. He <i>didn't </i>-- for a fact, actually -- get a guy who could contribute right away. And even worse, he picked a guy that might have still been around when the Cavs picked again at #46.<br /><br />These aren't the Oklahoma City Thunder, Memphis Grizzlies, or Sacramento Kings. These are the Cleveland Cavaliers. You know, the same team that made massive headlines yesterday after acquiring Shaquille O'Neal? The same team that has The King? The same team that has to win and win now in order to please said King?<br /><br />Eyenga wasn't even expecting to be drafted, let alone get drafted in the first round with a guaranteed contract. Hell, even he seemed shocked out of this world when his name was called. Even David Stern was a little surprised (as if to say, "What the F, Ferry? I pretty much forced Steve Kerr to hand over Shaq to you and you screw up less than 24 hours later?").<br /><br />Here's what <a href="http://www.draftexpress.com/">draftexpress.com's live blog said when the Cavs made their selection:</a><br /><br /><blockquote><font style="font-size: 1.5625em;"><b><span name="intelliTxt" id="intelliTXT"><font size="2"><font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><i>10:25</i>
Cleveland locks up the [1st] round with Christian Eyenga? This is an
insane pick. Eyenga put his name into this draft hoping not to get
picked period, and now he goes in the first ro</font><font style="font-size: 1.25em;">und? Over DeJuan Blair
and Sam Young? Wow. It looks like Eyenga's plan to avoid the first round salary scale definitely backfired.</font></font></span></b></font><br /></blockquote><br />Last year was a good time for a project/developmental pick. The Cavs were 45-37, and the Hickson pick had to be made. The Cavs badly needed a young frontcourt player. Hickson was the best one available. Some considered it a reach, but it probably wasn't considering that Hickson wouldn't have fallen much further.<br /><br />This year, the Cavs got a player in Eyenga who will <i>not </i>contribute the way Hickson did last year. Here's a guy that will probably be stashed away overseas for a year, maybe two. And even worse, the Cavs could have gotten a much better player to fit the very need that they probably want Eyenga to fill.<br /><br />His name is Sam Young.<br /><br /><a href="http://mvn.com/cavalierattitude/2009/06/hey-danny-ferry-if-trading-up-to-draft-sam-young-is-wrong-you-dont-want-to-be-right-1.html">I thought that the Cavs would have had to trade up to get Young.</a> Many mocks had him going as high as #20 to Utah. Some on draft morning even had him going 18th overall to Minnesota. But Young, for whatever reason, fell all the way to the Cavs' pick at #30. And the stars were aligned for a match made in heaven, a Godsend for the Cavs.<br /><br />Except Ferry failed to cooperate.<br /><br />Young wound up going just six picks later to Memphis at 36th overall. But the Cavs whiffed on a tremendous opportunity to pick an NBA-ready rookie who would be ready to contribute right away. They did the same damn thing last year when they passed up on Courtney Lee, but again, picking a young big man was necessary and Hickson's selection was easily justifiable.<br /><br />A year later, don't even bring up the word "justifiable" to describe Ferry's draft-day skills. As someone who lives in Portland, I've seen a team use the draft as the single avenue to build its way back up and take a 21-win team in 2006 to a 54-win team in 2009. So I know it can be done. <br /><br />The Cavs need a player to help them win now. Christian Eyenga won't even be on the roster next year, let alone rotation.<br /><br />And this just adds to the fact that the Cavs are failing miserably in adding young talent around LeBron James. ESPN.com's Chad Ford recently wrote that when 2010 comes around, there will be no basketball reason for LeBron to stay in Cleveland. There will be no young wingman that he can form a legendary Jordan-Pippen 1-2 punch with. Mo Williams just isn't <i>that </i>guy. Shaq is 37 and might even be gone after this year.<br /><br />That's not to say that Sam Young would have been the single reason to convince LeBron to stay in Cleveland, but at least the Cavs would have started to build a core of nice young role players to grow with LeBron and fit around him. Young is 24, the same age as LeBron, so he would be able to complement James for the rest of his career. <br /><br />Add a guy like Young to other young guys like Mo, Delonte West, Daniel Gibson, Anderson Varejao, and Hickson, and you're finally starting to piece together some nice young parts that can help form the foundation for this team.<br /><br />And anyone using this draft's "weakness" as an excuse should just stop right now. Every single draft -- <i>every single draft -- </i>has guys who can be core rotation players right off the bat. Did you know that 17 of the 30 second-round picks from a year ago made an NBA team this past season? Many even received playing time. None of those two will apply to the Cavs' <i>first </i>round pick from this year!<br /><br />Speaking of second round picks, North Carolina's Danny Green was a great pick at #46, a pick the Cavs were supposed to give away in the Shaq deal. But as great as the Green pick was, his selection would have been unnecessary had Ferry taken Young and then settled for hs Congoan mancrush at 46.<br /><br />So get excited about Shaquille O'Neal if you must. It's a move for 2009-10 and nothing more. But for an organization that has been obsessing itself over what happens <i>after</i> that, Thursday certainly wasn't a step in the right direction.]]></description>

There are a couple of problems with this podcast:<br /><br />1) Lots of inappropriate jokes. <br />2) Very little basketball talk worth listening to. <br />3) More inappropriate jokes. <br />4) Mom, please don't listen. <br /><br />But with that said, it was a pretty funny episode, at least to me. Andy Eisner returned from suspension to join us for a discussion during the time of year in which actual good basketball discussion is hard to create. The Finals have been over for too long and the draft is a week away and not worth hashing out until a couple days before it happens <br /><br />So we just discuss Andy's vices and occasionally mention things like Kobe Bryant's shirt, LeBron's shirt, and Kevin McHale's departure. <br /><br />Hope you enjoy and if you're offended in any way, I tried to warn you.<br /><br /><br /><i>Musical Break: Ghetto Rock by Mos Def</i><br /><br /><br />Any comments, concerns, or criticisms can be directed to <b>zharper@talkhoops.net</b><br /><br />Don't

            <title>With Shaq And Suns, Ferry Is Talking With The Right Team, But For The Wrong Player</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image" style="display: inline;"><img alt="richardson_drive_090127.jpg" src="http://mvn.com/cavalierattitude/richardson_drive_090127.jpg" class="mt-image-none" style="" width="540" height="275" /></span><br /><br />You can't blame the Cleveland Cavaliers for not hogging the NBA headlines even while being out of the NBA Finals. They're doing just as good of a job as anybody at staying in the headlines despite their season being over. <br /><br />First, the news was about the transfer of 15 percent of the team's ownership to an overseas Chinese investment group last month. Next, erroneous reporting by SLAM Magazine incorrectly had them talking with Rasheed Wallace about a two-year deal worth $10 million per year, an impossibility given the Cavs' current cap situation. Then, Mike Brown's job came under fire with Pat Riley being thrown in the mix as the replacement. <br /><br />Now, on the day that the Los Angeles Lakers won their 15th championship and Kobe Bryant won his first NBA Finals MVP, the news throughout Sunday was about the possibility of Shaquille O'Neal teaming up with LeBron James in Cleveland in 2009-10.<br /><br />The thing that should strike you as the most intriguing with this recent news is that Ferry is already all over it this early in the offseason. The NBA Finals weren't even over as of Sunday morning, and talks were already about the Cavs being aggressive in the wake of their devastating loss to the Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference Finals.<br /><br />And the fact that he was talking to the Phoenix Suns and GM Steve Kerr, a good friend of his, should be even more encouraging if you're a Cavs fan. So while it was good to see Ferry being aggressive and talking to Kerr, he struck out on his third at-bat:<br /><br />He was talking about Shaq.<br /><br />Because if the Suns are looking to do a salary dump and get rid of a player with a big contract -- a player that could fill a need for the Cavs, at that -- then Ferry should be talking to Kerr about one Jason Richardson.<br /><br />Oh, Ferry is no stranger to Richardson. Rumors linked the Cavs to Richardson even at the trade deadline in '07, when the former Michigan State Spartan was in the midst of an injury-riddled season. Ferry was said to have tried again for J-Rich last summer when the latter was with the Charlotte Bobcats, but an early-season trade sent the two-time Slam Dunk Champion from North Carolina to the desert in Arizona to play with the Suns.<br /><br />And in 58 games with the Suns this past season, the 28-year old Richardson averaged 16.4 points while shooting 38.3 percent (102-for-266) from 3-point range and a stunning (for a perimeter player) 48.8 percent from the floor. The 6'6", 225-pounder is a big two-guard who played all 82 games for the Bobcats in '07-08 (automatically dismissing any impending comparisons to Larry Hughes), during which he put up 21.8 points and shot 40.6 percent (243-for-599) from downtown.<br /><br />In fact, outside of that '06-07 season, Richardson has been durable and injury-free for the most part. With that one season as the outlier, the least games that Richardson has played in a season is 72 in 2004-05. Starting with his rookie year in 2001-02, he has played in 80, 82, 78, 72, 75, 51, 82, and 72 games, respectively. That's pretty impressive and speaks a lot for Richardson's durability.<br /><br />As far as his contract goes, Richardson is due $13.3 million next season and $14.4 million in 2010-11. If the Suns took back a package of Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic, it wouldn't save them any money for this season, so Ferry would have to get creative while still including Pavlovic's non-guaranteed contract in the deal. <br /><br />That would be the difficult part, as a package of Pavlovic and Daniel Gibson would total only $9.2 million and not work under the league's trade provisions. Including J.J. Hickson in the mix makes the deal work, but then the question becomes about whether or not a young big man with a lot of promise is too much to surrender for acquiring a potential 20-points-per-game shooting guard. The answer from here, by the way, is "yes it is."<br /><br />The other options would include either trading Ben Wallace, with him and the Suns agreeing to a contract buyout (in the case Wallace retires), or getting a third team involved (like Ferry did in the Mo Williams trade). Trading Wallace for Richardson straight up actually increases the Suns' payroll for next year and gives them absolutely no incentive in getting a deal done.<br /><br />But with Richardson, the Cavs have a big two-guard in the prime of his career who can really shoot the lights out and attack the rim. Yeah, he was humiliated by LeBron earlier this season when he tried to go for a 360 dunk on a fast break in a game against the Cavs in Phoenix, but I'm sure that bygones can be bygones in this case.<br /><br />Pairing Richardson with All-Star Mo Williams in the backcourt would give James his most dynamic backcourt to work with since he's been in the NBA, and sliding Delonte West to the bench would add a punch to a unit that was pathetic at best against Orlando. West has proven that he can play both guard positions, and that trait would be valuable in having him be the team's sixth man backing up either Richardson or Williams.<br /><br />It doesn't address the team's problems in the frontcourt, but you can't argue that adding a 28-year old shooting guard who has averaged 18.6 points per game and shot 36.6 percent from beyond the arc during his eight-year career doesn't make this team substantially better. It may not help much with the matchup problems posed by the Magic, but it also makes the Cavs harder for Orlando to match up against on their own end.<br /><br />So Ferry and Kerr are talking. That much is for sure. Ferry's friendship with Oklahoma City GM Sam Presti helped tremendously in getting a deal done for Mo back in August. And he's going to have to rely on his friendship with Kerr to help him get a deal done this summer.<br /><br />Now, if only he can talk about the <i>real </i>player that will make the Cavaliers a nightmare to defend for years to come. Then we're really talking.]]></description>

            <title>Tyreke Evans: Is He Worth Trading Up For?</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<a href="http://view.picapp.com/default.aspx?term=Tyreke%20Evans&amp;iid=4374425" target="_blank"><img src="http://cdn.picapp.com/ftp/Images/b/2/a/4/PicImg_NCAA_BASKETBALL_MAR_4ee0.JPG?adImageId=1580126&amp;imageId=4374425" alt="NCAA BASKETBALL: MAR 19 NCAA Tournament - Cal State Northridge v Memphis" border="0" width="500" height="333" /></a><script type="text/javascript" src="http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/PicAppPIS/JavaScript/PisV4.js"></script><br /><br />Yesterday, ESPN's Chad Ford posted a <a href="http://mvn.com/celtics17/2009/06/chad-ford-tyreke-evans-appealing-to-ainge.html">news release</a> telling us that Celtics executive Danny Ainge was interested in Tyreke Evans, a strong guard fresh off of his first year at Memphis University. <br /><br />Evans, who will be highly sought after before, during, and after Draft day, has been projected to be picked early in the first round. Some have him as high as the fifth and sixth pick. <br /><br />Ainge has not yet commented on the news release, but there have been multiple trade rumors swirling around including the C's and the Draft; one even suggesting that the front office could make a move to obtain the second pick, currently owned by Memphis' hometown team, the Grizzles. With that being said, you know that Boston is watching prospects and possibilities to move up closely.<br /><br />Along with the Grizzles, teams such as the Bulls, Nets, Pistons, Kings, Thunder, and Wizards are teams the Celtics are targeting. The highest pick is owned by the Grizzles (2nd).<br /><br />But is Evans worth giving away some players to move up? Let's check it out.<br /> ]]></description>

            <title>NBA Mock Database: James Harden and Tyreke Evans rising</title>
            <description><![CDATA[The <font style="font-size: 1.25em;"><a href="http://dcprosportsreport.com/mockdraftdatabase/nba.html"><b>NBA Mock Draft Database</b></a></font> is the largest it has ever been in its 4 year history.&nbsp; We now list a total of 122 NBA mock drafts.&nbsp; Incredible.&nbsp; The NBA Draft, as far as mock drafts enthusiasts, are ever increasing each year.&nbsp; Not quite at the level of the <a href="http://dcprosportsreport.com/mockdraftdatabase/nfl.html"><b>NFL Mock Draft Database</b></a>, where a 13 days out, we had over 300 mocks, but the NBA Draft and blog interaction and coverage is increasing year in and year out. Here are your current NBA Mock Database stats:<br /><br />Total Mock Drafts:&nbsp; <b>122 mocks</b><br />Mock Drafts Updated in June:&nbsp; <b>64 mocks</b><br />Mock Drafts Updated TODAY:&nbsp; <b>21 mocks</b><br />New Mocks Added Today:&nbsp; <b>5 mocks</b><br /><br />Since we have had such a big chunk of updated over the past three days, it was also time to do the new <b>Consensus</b> picks.&nbsp; The Consensus leaders are based on the number of Mock Drafts we choose to munch together at the time.&nbsp; Today, we chose to munch all <u>64 mock drafts that have been updated in the month of June</u>. &nbsp; <a href="http://dcprosportsreport.com/2009/06/nba-draft-where-you-going-hasheem.html"><b>Our last munch</b></a> was done last week, yet, with all the changes, we have two new additions to the Leaders.&nbsp; <br /><br /><span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image" style="display: inline;"><a href="http://dcprosportsreport.com/Blake%20Griffin.jpg"><img alt="Blake Griffin.jpg" src="http://dcprosportsreport.com/assets_c/2009/05/Blake%20Griffin-thumb-175x150-16002.jpg" class="mt-image-left" style="margin: 0pt 20px 20px 0pt; float: left;" width="175" height="150" /></a></span>Here they are: <br /><br /><u>1st Overall Pick:</u>&nbsp; <br /><b>BLAKE GRIFFIN</b><br />Consensus:&nbsp; YES<br />Percentage of Mocks:&nbsp; 100%<br /><i></i><br />These
is no question here.&nbsp; The LA Clippers are going to take Blake Griffin
number one overall and all the mocks believe that as well.&nbsp; Griffin has tallied 100% of all 64 mock drafts, mostly because, well, that is who the Clippers will pick.&nbsp; No surprise here, and it likely won't change.&nbsp; <br /><br /><u>2nd Overall Pick:</u>&nbsp; <br /><b>HASHEEM THABEET</b><br />
Consensus:&nbsp; NO<br />
Percentage of Mocks:&nbsp; 56%<br />
<i>DC Pro Sports Report Pick</i>:&nbsp; Hasheem Thabeet<br />
<br />
56% of the 64 mocks munched are projecting Thabeet to Memphis. That is a rise of 6% since our <a href="http://dcprosportsreport.com/2009/06/nba-draft-where-you-going-hasheem.html"><b>consensus tally last week</b></a>. &nbsp; Thabeet pops up anywhere from 2nd, 3rd, and 5th.&nbsp; He is also within 4% of becoming the Database's consensus pick, needing 60% of the projection.&nbsp; Also getting slots here from some mocks:&nbsp; Ricky Rubio (26 mocks) and James Harden (2 mocks).&nbsp; <br /><br /><span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image" style="display: inline;"><a href="http://dcprosportsreport.com/harden3.jpg"><img alt="harden3.jpg" src="http://dcprosportsreport.com/assets_c/2009/06/harden3-thumb-225x307-16954.jpg" class="mt-image-right" style="margin: 0pt 0pt 20px 20px; float: right;" width="225" height="307" /></a></span><u>3rd Overall Pick:</u>&nbsp; <br /><b>JAMES HARDEN</b><br />

Consensus:&nbsp; NO<br />

Percentage of Mocks:&nbsp; 47%<br />

<i></i><br />
Welcoem to the Top three James Harden.&nbsp; More and more mocks are becoming comfortable with Harden as a Top 3 pick.&nbsp; Last week, Thabeet led here.&nbsp; But, Harden as been significantly rising with mock drafts.&nbsp; Harden increased from 13 mocks projecting him here last week to 30 mocks this week.&nbsp; <i>Others listed at 3rd overall:</i>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Hasheem Thabeet (20 mocks), Ricky Rubio (18 mocks), and Jordan Hill (2 mocks). <br /><br /><u>4th Overall Pick:</u>&nbsp; <br /><b>RICKY RUBIO</b><br />

Consensus:&nbsp; NO<br />

Percentage of Mocks:&nbsp; 39%<br />

<i></i><br />
Rubio is much like Thabeet.&nbsp; Mocks are all over the place as far as
projecting Rubio at 2nd or 4th overall.&nbsp; Rubio gains 5% from last week in the 4th slot.&nbsp; In terms of slots, I am pretty confident Rubio will go 2nd and 4th and the mock drafts appear trhat way as well.&nbsp; <i>Other listed at 4th overall</i>:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Jordan Hill (10 mocks), James Harden (8 mocks), Jrue Holiday (6 mocks), Brandon Jennings (5 mocks), Tyreke Evans (5 mocks), and Stephen Curry (3 mocks). <br /><br /><u>5th Overall Pick:</u>&nbsp; <b>BULLETS!</b><br />
<b>JORDAN HILL</b><br />

Consensus:&nbsp; NO<br />

Percentage of Mocks:&nbsp; 4%<br />

<i></i><br />
Jordan Hill has been comfortably leading here since the Lottery.&nbsp; Hill
would be a nice fit in Washington.&nbsp; Hill's projection to the Bullets or the 5th pick, whichever occurs, gained 2% to 44%.&nbsp; Seemingly though, the Bullets are looking as if they would like to trade out of the 5th slot.&nbsp; Watch Tyreke Evans here. &nbsp;<i> Others listed at 5th</i>: &nbsp; James Harden (15 mocks), Tyreke Evans (9 mocks), Stephen Curry (6 mocks), and Hasheem Thabeet (6 mocks)<br /><br /><u>6th Overall Pick:</u>&nbsp; <br />

<b>Tyreke Evans</b><br />

Consensus:&nbsp; NO<br />

Percentage of Mocks:&nbsp; 25%<br />

<i></i><br />

Tyreke Evans is gaining in the mock drafts, both at the 5th and 6th slot.&nbsp; Evans knocks out DeRozan as the leader in the 6th spot, garnering 25% of the 64 mock drafts.&nbsp; Alot of this though will be determined bvy what, if any, trades occur.&nbsp; <i>Others listed at 6th</i>: &nbsp; Demar DeRozan (8 mocks), Jrue Holiday (5 mocks), James Harden (3 mocks), Jonny Flynn (2 mocks) Stephen Curry (2 mocks), and Brandon Jennings&nbsp; (2 mocks)<br /><br />Thanks for the shout out from&nbsp; <a href="http://blogs.usatoday.com/gameon/"><b>Reid Cherner and Tom Weir at Yahoo Sports</b></a>.&nbsp; Much appreciated.&nbsp; Thanks as well to <a href="http://www.sactownroyalty.com/"><b>Sac Town Royalty</b></a> for the recogition. &nbsp;&nbsp; <br />]]></description>
