Football loses two Jayhawks
Today it was made public that Redshirt Senior DT Todd Haselhorst and Junior CB Anthony Webb both were parting ways with the Jayhawk football program.
The absence of Haselhorst should be felt throughout the 2008 season. Haselhorst was expected by most to start at a defensive tackle position that was already thinned by the graduation of All-American James McClinton. Haselhorst was a role-player for numerous seasons with the team, and cited health reasons for his decision to leave. You can never blame a man for looking out for himself both in mind and body. He will be missed.
Webb, on the other hand, was booted off the team for a violation of team policy. Knowing fully that Head Coach Mark Mangino likes to keep a tight lid on all team-discipline affairs, I wouldn’t expect this one to surface soon—if ever.
Webb was a standout recruit that came into Lawrence with a 4-star rating. He saw the field relatively little in his time with the team. He had very little impact on the game when he was on the field, and never brought his recruited skills to the gridiron at Kansas. I—for one—always thought he would end up being a ‘great’ corner. In an up-and-coming program like Kansas, being a ‘great’ player can immortalize you for ages. Ask Aqib Talib or even Charles Gordon. (C’mon, what Hawk fan wouldn’t chant his name if he was still returning punts in 20 years?)
