Let the Speculation Begin

Amidst retirement rumors all season, Lloyd Carr has finally decided to officially retire Monday as Michigan’s Head Coach after 13 seasons.  The rumors of Carr’s retirement began to swirl after the Wolverines lost their opening game this season at home to Appalachian State.  Three other loses soon followed, including Saturday’s match-up against rival Ohio State.

After the App State game, speculation did not only begin about Carr’s place as Michigan Head Coach, but the gossip heated up in Baton Rouge when it came to Coach Miles and his position as the LSU Head Coach next year.

Miles has close ties to the blue and maize.  He played there, was an assistant coach there and had a very close relationship with legendary Michigan coach Bo Schembechler.  Miles has a true love for his alma mater, a love for a school many current football coaches do not have for theirs.  Sure Miles loves LSU, his players here and his success in Baton Rouge, but his ties with Michigan are much stronger.  The Head Coach of Michigan is a job Miles has probably coveted since he played on the field of The Big House.  Miles has a true passion for the University of Michigan.

Carr might be retiring tomorrow, but Les still has three more very significant games left to play on the season- Arkansas, SEC Championship and whichever bowl game is lucky enough to have the Tigers grace their presence at.  He still has an important job to finish at LSU, but let the speculation begin.

Well, there are only three coaches who I would like to succeed Lloyd Carr, and they are Boise State’s Chris Petersen, Florida’s Urban Meyer, and, of course, Les Miles. The obvious choice of the UM’s AD Bill Martin is Les Miles as we have all learned that UM has just been granted permission to negotiate with Miles. That being said, I truly believe that Michigan will up the ante and make Miles priority number one, even if it requires more money, which it will. With all of the Michigan background flowing through Miles, I honestly believe he is a lock, provided the terms offered to Miles within reason. I would love to have him as head coach, and I would love to have him bring someone in to replace the current UM offensive coordinator, Mike DeBord.
