Tigers Fall From Glory Again

It was a night reminiscent of the October 13th heartbreak in Lexington.  The Tigers once again fell in three overtimes to the unranked Arkansas Razorbacks 50-48.  After starting the second quarter, the Tigers gave up a 6-0 lead and began to trail for the rest of the game.  LSU kept catching up to Arkansas, which eventually led to the first overtime.

Quarterback Matt Flynn was 22 of 47 for 209 yards and three touchdowns in his last game at Tiger Stadium.  For four complete quarters and two overtimes, Flynn had not thrown one interception.  LSU fans were stunned that he had come this far without a turnover.  Then it came.  With the new overtime rules, teams must go for the two-point conversion in the third overtime.  Flashbacks of Kentucky ran through the heads of all 92,600 fans as they held their breath for the pass that would tie the game and send it into another overtime.  And there it was, Flynn’s only interception of the night.  Looking for receiver Demetrius Byrd, Flynn threw the ball right into the hands of Arkansas defender Matterral Richardson and the Razorback bench ran on the field to celebrate.  The Tigers had just lost for the second time this season and their National Championship dreams faded away.

Arkansas, or should I just say Darren McFadden, ran all over the LSU defense and out gained the Tigers 513 to 413 total yards.  The Razorbacks rushed for a total of 385 yards, 206 of them courtesy of the Heisman contender.  McFadden also ran for three touchdowns and threw for one.  LSU’s leading rusher, Jacob Hester, once again shined running for 126 yards and two touchdowns.

After close games against Florida, Auburn and Alabama, LSU had not consistently played like a National Championship team this season.  In those last three games, plus Kentucky and Arkansas, LSU has either lost their lead or worked the whole game to just get even with their opponent.

If LSU wins the SEC Championship in Atlanta this upcoming weekend against Tennessee, they will still travel to New Orleans, just a couple days earlier than the trip they had hoped for all season.
