Huskers bounce back for big win

After losing a game they should have won against Western Kentucky, it was nice to see Nebraska take care of business Sunday.  Defense has not been a problem for the Cornhuskers this season, but consistency on offense, and on the boards has been lacking, and against a Rutgers team with good size on their roster, it was imperative NU hang with the Scarlet Knights in rebounds.

Nebraska notched a 12 point win, despite Rutgers getting 25 Cory Shepherd, it’s star player, and the Scarlet Knights shot just 35% from the field while turning it over 15 times, compared with Nebraska’s 45% shooting, and just 11 TO’s.

It was a marked improvement over the debacle that was the loss at Western Kentucky, in which the Huskers turned the ball over 23 times, and hit just 19 of 28 free throws.  Had the Huskers gone 20-28 from the line, the game would never have gone into overtime, and the Huskers would be looking at an impressive 7-1 record.

Their 6-2 record will have to do for now, and at worst Nebraska should come out of their non-conference schedule 10-3, with the last test before Big 12 play begins being 19th ranked Oregon, who they’ll take on next Saturday at the Qwest Center.

Savannah State is next on the horizon, who shouldn’t be much more than a stepping stone, or training team in preparation for the Ducks.  The Tigers should allow Aleks Maric, who still seems inconsistent with his attention, and desire to be in a ball game.  During the Western Kentucky mess, I saw Hilltoppers constantly jumping over Maric, who remained firmly planted on the ground.  This was in spite of the fact that Maric had 13 rebounds.  He could have had 20, had he given a better effort.

I know Maric gets pounded all game long, I know that being constantly double and triple teamed is exhausting, but this is what Maric signed up for, and if he wants to be the best player he can be, he needs to stop the rollercoaster performances, he’s capable of much more.
