Welcome to the Hall Sports Journal
Welcome to the Hall Sports Journal. I am Mike Peterson, I also write for Husky Connection here at MVN.com and I plan to make this the deepest and most insightful Seton Hall sports blog on the web. I’ll start with a quick recap of how this basketball season has gone so far for The Hall.
The Pirates opened the season with a six game winning streak that included a neutral court victory over the #23 Virginia Cavaliers at the Palestra in Philadelphia. The streak was finally ended at St. Mary’s in a 85-70 defeat. The Hall went on to add non-conference victories over St. Peter’s, James Madison, Delaware State, and Morgan State while falling to Penn State and North Carolina State.
The Seton Hall Pirates struggled early in Big East play with three straight losses. The games were against UConn, Marquette and Pittsburgh, so while an 0-3 record to start conference play looks bad, it really is not that terrible. Seton Hall showed great fight at Marquette in a game that they did not lose until the final seconds. Although the Pirates failed to get their 2nd win over a ranked team, they still gave fans hope of a possible tournament birth (The Hall has a rematch with the Golden Eagles today, February 12, at The Rock).
Seton Hall rebounded from the slow start with a five game conference winning streak to push their Big East record to 5-3. The final game of the winning streak was an 84-71 win over Rutgers that temporarily crowned the Pirates kings of New Jersey. The Scarlet Knights and Pirates will do battle again on Sunday, March 9th at the Prudential Center. The other four victims of Seton Halls win streak were South Florida, Louisville, Providence, and Cincinnati.
The Pirates have now gone cold and are currently in the middle of three game skid. Their first loss was a 73-61 decision at Georgetown. SHU hung with the Hoyas for most of the game, but Georgetown proved to be too much down the stretch and pulled away over the final few minutes. After returning home and taking a drubbing from Notre Dame, the Pirates traveled to Villanova, who was also slumping. The Pirates put up a great fight on the road, but lost a 72-70 heart breaker on a ‘Nova three pointer with just 12 seconds remaining.
While the Hall has not yet lost all hope of a tournament birth, they need to turn things around quickly and that starts tonight in their rematch with the Marquette Golden Eagles. After the fight they put up in Milwaukee, the Pirates should have plenty of confidence that they can win this game and that will be key if they hope to salvage their season. Go Pirates!
