Mining the Gold Rush

49ers win thriller in the desert

WOW! I thought when the Niners scored their first touchdown, that would have been the highlight of the game. But as the game continued, there were more touchdowns and it actually got interesting. HIGHLIGHTS!

The 49ers came into the game with Ted Tollner consulting Jim Hostler on offense. It worked. Amazing. The Niners answered right back to Larry Fitzgerald’s touchdown on the Cardinal’s first drive. The passing was really great, having Dilfer find Vernon Davis, Arnaz Battle. and Darrell Jackson. Dilfer was off on a lot of passes, but he kept the team alive

But the biggest surprise was Frank Gore. After a very frustrating season, he finally broke out today: 116 rush yards and 98 receiving yards.

The 49ers defense, for the most part, was exceptional. Larry Fitzgerald, with nine catches for 156 yards was the biggest stat. One of those touchdown catches came on a 48-yard hail mary pass at the end of the first half. Kurt Warner had an impressive game also, throwing for a league-high 484 yards. His two picks to Walt Harris, however, led to good field position for the Niners, which led to easy scores.

Frank Gore couldn’t do such, as he was shut down on offense again. There led to the three field goals for the Niners. Field goals are fine and all, but after some time, you have to wonder where the desperation to score touchdowns will be.

I’ll just relish in the victory. A great offense showed up, and the Niners dodged bullets.

In what could have been a game winning touchdown at the end of regulation, Donald Strickland pulled a great stop on Bryant Johnson. Then in overtime, the delay of game on the Cardinals cost them the win on Neil Rackers’ potential game-winning field goal. However it came to great Andy Lee punting and Kurt Warner holding onto the ball too long for the sack.

Here are my awards for the game.

MVP of the game: Ted Tollner for his offensive genius. Frank Gore finally has arrived. Andy Lee continued his great kicking.

Key play of the game: Neil Rackers and his missed game-winning field goal gave the Niners life in overtime.

Had something to prove and delivered: Trent Dilfer was a huge question mark. I knew he was a leader, but this was amazing just to see him lead the team to victory.

Surprise of the game: With the numbers Warner and Fitzgerald put up, the Niners were in it the whole time.

VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was great to see all phases play well; hats off to the offense, defense and special teams! I like what Tollner brought to the offensive play-calling; incorporating the running backs, namely Gore, into the short passing game. It was refreshing to see a return to west-coast offense principles. I think what we saw yesterday was the potential that this team has to win games. The defense didn’t let up despite the hail mary score and being scorched for 484 yards passing from Warner and Gore and co. had a great game. I am hoping that they will salvage this season and end on a good note.

First game with Tollner and the offense shows up. The defense for the most part did exactly what it was supposed to do, so I am glad that they stayed in there, and got the winning score.
