Mining the Gold Rush

Tollner has saved the 49ers and the season

With one game, Ted Tollner saved the 49ers. With one game, my acusations of the Niners offense has digressed. With one game, I now actually have faith in the 49ers because of Ted Tollner.

Tollner has said that the game in Arizona was mostly Jim Hostler, that he only aided for some part of the game. I don’t think that is the case. The way that the season was going, there is no way that Hostler was able to turn the offense around like that all by himself. Tollner was behind it all, and because of that, I actually believe that all the remaining games are very winnable, and possibly the team finishing 8-8, a record that is better than last year’s 7-9 mark.

All this season, I have complained about an offense that had no fire power. An offense that was afraid to win. Last Sunday, I saw something different. I didn’t even think that was the Niners on the field.

Maybe it was a string of good things, but it was glad to see Frank Gore run crazy all over the field. Trent Dilfer was completing passes. Some of them were touchdowns. Yes, touchdowns… we hadn’t seen those since Atlanta a few weeks back.

The offense now has a threat in the running game now. And even better, receivers are running routes and finding catches. It’s looking like the team has a new desire to turn this season around. And most importantly, Mike Nolan may have kept his job.

All thanks to Ted Tollner! Hip hip hooray!

This gives me confidence like we had last year when Norv Turner, and I believe that it could just be like last year. It’s one of those situations where maybe it will finally work out next year. But with that case, we need a quarterback that isn’t young and confused. This is where it lies. Trent Dilfer might be the best option as a seasoned veteran. Alex Smith, even though I hate him, may still be a good option if he gets healthy. With the offense that the team ran, with timely runs, dump off passes, any quarterback can excel. Heck, Derek Anderson can come to SF if he wants.

But whatever the case may be, this new offense can tear it up. I might be getting ahead of myself with one win, but this one win can set the tone for the rest of the season.

The season is not lost. Maybe because I’m living off extreme hopes. But when the offense scores that much in one game, maybe it’s good to hope.

If Tollner never came, I would be emo. But he came, he saw, and he made the offense score. Touchdown Tollner!

First of all, I think that Tollner made Hostler actually sit up in the booth where he belongs and not stand on the sidelines. Anybody who knows football knows that an offensive coodinator has a better vantage point up top. Secondly, The offense we saw last week was efficient beacuse of what Tollner brought. Perhaps, bringing in Tollner was the spark the offense needed to get going. They played with more energy and confidence; something that has been noticeably lacking since maybe week 2. As far as quarterbacks are concerned, Dilfer does something that Smith didn’t do…step up in the pocket to avoid the pass rush and get a pass off. Just doing that gives the receivers more time to run their routes and it also lets the play develop. Smith, just rest the rest of this season, and let Trent teach you a few things. And, most of all, get ready to fight for your job come training camp. Go Niners!!
