Turnover-filled game turns ugly for 49ers
So we’ve come to this. The 49ers have turned into a ridiculous load of inconsistency. But much harder to swallow is the Panthers took advantage of every opportunity the 49ers presented to them.
Four interceptions plagued the 49ers. Trent Dilfer was forcing passes, giving the Panthers and their struggling defense momentum. The struggling offense for the Panthers found good field position and an awesome run game.
The 49ers offense had nothing going at all. Only for that brief moment in the third quarter, where the offense was handed great field position from an interception and a punt return, it was just a very difficult game to watch.
Vinny Testaverde was impressive. Even though he threw two picks, he gave the Niners a frustrating time when the team was trying to figure out how the Panthers offense was going to attack. Speaking of attack, Frank Gore and Vernon Davis were shut down. Finding consistency was difficult when drives were stalled by turnovers.
I don’t know what happened this week. Ted Tollner was on the plane with the 49ers, and was at the stadium. Somehow, you can only do so much, then it’s the players who execute. Short passes, bad throws, pressure up front. The offense was just terrible.
The season is going through a tough time. The team has to wing out whatever is left and see what can be done in the off-season.
Here are my awards for the game.
MVP of the game: DeAngelo Williams, along with DeShaun Foster, kept the chains moving with the running game. That helped eat the clock, putting ends to any hope for a Niners comeback.
Key play of the game: Richard Marshall’s Pick-6 on Trent Dilfer set the tone for the rest of the game.
Had something to prove and delivered: Vinny’s first ever win against the Niners.
Surprise of the game: The team reverted back to their old ways, playing great for a small portion of the game (the two scoring drives).
Let’s hope that the team can help us ease into Week 17 without any more heartaches.
