Alex Smith needs to be shut down this season
The 49ers could announce today the status of quarterback Alex Smith, more than likely announcing that the quarterback will no longer play the rest of the season. With that shoulder injury months ago, Smith has not recovered.
His throwing was off target, he was in pain, and most of all, the offensive line wasn’t giving him protection. I don’t know what the future holds for Smith, but this is getting to the point where I am seriously wondering if we ever will see Smith in a Niners uniform. His job is in jeopardy. But with that contract he has, the Niners might have to be forced to stick with him.
Is he our franchise quarterback? We’re forced to make him the quarterback for the future. I still don’t know why the Niners spent so much from a quarterback that hasn’t proved anything. Well, that’s he Yorks for you guys.
But they need to shut him down. For the team, for the career, he needs to rest up and heal. I still don’t believe Alex Smith is the future of the team. He has just lost that quarterback killer instinct that I thought he showed last year in Seattle. But now I just am wondering who will lead the team next year.
Do the Niners draft a quarterback? Colt Brennan maybe? Just an idea. It’s still too early to think, but at this point for Coach Nolan, he probably is desparate. He might get the axe soon, so we have to wonder where this team is going.

You have got to be the most uninformed “commentator” on the internet. A. Alex Smith and his 50 million contract isn’t going anywhere and neither is the beloved Nolan. The second of the two I agree with whole heartedly. Nolan is the future of this franchise. While I believe we’re stuck with Smith, we spent this year with his wallet on the bench, no problem doing it again next year and then trading him away for 1/3rd of it. If he wants to play in the NFL he’ll take it

I know that the contract hurts the team, which forces the Niners to keep him. I doubt that the Niners can send him away, so the team has to eat it.
Nolan on the other hand, I really don’t think he will stay long. Just for the fact that even though Smith has been hurt, the team performed well under their potential with the rest of the team. His playcalling, and his allowing of the whole Hostler situation, is really terrible.
But we’ll see how the whole thing rolls out. If the Niners win all out, then we’ll have a different look into things

Sam,
The reason that Alex Smith’s contract is so high is that he was the top pick in the draft. The situation there in SF is a prime example of the need for a change in how the NFL rookies are paid.

Well, former UCLA QB Drew Olson is on the Niners practice squad. Maybe he can be brought in and beat Smith out for his starting job next year, providing Smith stays. At this point, Nolan and Smith should be given one more season to prove something. After all, Smith has been plagued with injuries and bad O’line play.

Patrick: My point. He didn’t deserve something so high after proving nothing.
Louis: Maybe another season, but that might be pushing it. However, if Smith is fully recovered, one more run might be enough. We’ll see
