Mining the Gold Rush
Vikings score early, defeat 49ers 27-7
When the 49ers second play of the game ended up as 7 points for the Vikings, it was game over from there. In a game where the 49ers really had everything set up for them, especially great field position, the team couldn’t punch it in.
However, credit must be given to Tarvaris Jackson. His ability to be mobile, find open dump-offs allowed the Vikings to move the ball downfield. A good running attack from Chester Taylor didnt’ give the 49ers much chance.
However, we have to really give the 49ers credit, especially Patrick Willis. Even though Adrian Peterson is still banged up, he has evolved into the best back in the league right now. However, everytime Peterson touched the ball, he met Willis. Peterson finished with 14 rush attempts for only three yards. Impressive defense on stopping Peterson, but not any on Taylor.
Trent Dilfer is a warrior. Even though he couldn’t lead the team to a score when they had drives starting in Vikings territory, he laid it all out for a first down towards the end of the first half. His neck injury took him out, which forced the Niners to bring in third-stringer Shaun Hill. I had always wanted to see Hill play in the regular season. And he did very well in the team’s only scoring drive. In fact, he was on target on a lot of passes. He was rust on some parts, but he did a great job leading the team. However, the Vikings were playing prevent mostly, so easy passes were a given. Don’t know what to expect next week, but if Dilfer is not available next week, look out for Arnaz Battle or Michael Robinson.
But the team still couldn’t stop the running of Taylor and the offense couldn’t be consisten… again.
Here are my awards for the game.
MVP of the game: Chester Taylor doesn’t want to be considered the #2 back, and he proved it by going over 100 yards.
Key play of the game: The first score by the Vikings set the tone for the game.
Had something to prove and delivered: Shaun Hill proved that he can play in the NFL. Didn’t see that coming.
Surprise of the game: Peterson vs. Willis… Willis won and Peterson was just KO’d all game long.
Giving up 27 points in the first half is not a recipe for success.
