Mining the Gold Rush
49ers sign former Heisman winner Chris Weinke
The 49ers were desperate and turned to 34-year old Chris Weinke. This veteran quarterback had a storied career in Florida State, winning the Heisman at the age of 27. But when he joined the Panthers, he never got his foot settled. He had a great rookie year but never got anywhere afterwards.
I hadn’t seen Weinke play in recent years, so I can’t remember if his style is the same as it was in college. However, I feel that this is just patchwork for the Niners until the season ends. Shaun Hill will still start this Saturday as the Niners will put Weinke at the second-string position.
I hope Hill doesn’t get hurt, so this quarterback situation doesn’t get any worse. I think that with only three games left, the team should just put Hill in for the remainder of the season. The team is struggling, but still needs a healthy team to win. And besides, if the Niners don’t try to win, the New England Patriots (who have the 49ers’ pick) could end up with the #2 pick. Darren McFadden could end up with the Patriots. And nobody wants to see the Patriots get better than they already are.
So anyway, I don’t think this is too much of a big news. I doubt Weinke will see any playing time. He’ll just suit up and take some pre-game snaps. The bigger issue at hand is the fued with Alex Smith and Mike Nolan. They say they both have cleared the air between them, but I really doubt that either one will stay at season’s end.
