Brett Favre retiring; a legend steps away

As many of you already have heard, Brett Favre is going to retire.

WOW! I don’t know how to feel. Regardless of your fan affilliation, Brett Favre was someone special. Like Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, or Cal Ripken Jr., Favre was just loved. He played the game with a passion… much like a little kid running the field. He had a consecutive games started streak that just showed how gutsy he was. He is synonymous with greatness. And today, Favre has decided that it was time for him to step away.

We thought that Favre would never retire, that he would continue to play until the world stopped rotating. Favre was everything you wanted in a quarterback, a player, a teammate, and as a person.

As a 49ers fan, watching the Niners face Favre and the Packers was actually not fun. Remember all those playoff games that Favre beat us in? From the rainy NFC Championship game in ‘98, the mud bowl the previous year, and all the other times that Favre frustrated us, we couldn’t help but realize that Favre was just amazing. He was cool, calm, and clutch. His arm was so strong. His intelligence was so great. And his ability to improvise on the run… he made football fun for us.

Watching Favre play football is the way we all would love to play football. There isn’t a care about winning or losing, but just going out there and enjoying the game was the only thing that Favre displayed on the field. He wanted to win, but wanted to have fun even more.

The two greatest games I have ever witnessed came with Favre at the helm. The great wild card game against the Niners (the one where T.O. made The Catch II) and Super Bowl XXXII (against the Broncos) were just classics. And we thought he could never repeat such greatness after dismal seasons in 2005 and 2006. But he came back with record-breaking touchdowns and a mile-high touchdown throw (a great Monday Night game).

I had always wanted to buy a Favre jersey. Even though he was on the opponent’s team, he still was something that was amazing. If you want to watch football at its purest, you watch Brett Favre.

He brought a legendary status onto himself. Not through his records. Not from his consecutive start streak. He did it purely on the love of football. I don’t think we can find another guy who was so wonderful for so long. Someone who brings the little kid out of us when we watch him play.

We love you Brett. Thank you for everything you’ve done for us. We’ll miss you!

Great hearing from a non-Packers fan, Sam. I can’t agree with you though on your picks for the two greatest games you ever witnessed. Those were two of the hardest pills I’ve ever had to swallow! lol

As a Niners fan, I hated Favre for all the times he beat us in the playoffs. But you have to respect him as a football player and a man. Great career, Brett.
