This is Mining the Gold Rush’s Draft Day 1 thread. All live updates will be posted here throughout the first day of the draft. Comment on your thoughts on the draft as it progresses. Thoughts, concerns… everything!
Go NINERS!
Current update 4:08 PM
With #39, the Niners take Guard Chilo Rachal from USC!
Current update 3:57 PM
Falcons just drafted Curtis Lofton, one of the prospects the Niners might have had interest in.
Seattle drafted TE John Carlson, adding to a rebuilding Seattle offense. The Niners might not see much of him in Seattle, but if he can fit right in, it might be something the Hawks will take advantage of, since they need that big game receiver.
Current update 3:34 PM
Giants take Kenny Phillips from THE U. That ends the first round.
I’ll give a little update on the Niners’ first round pick.
Current update 3:21 PM
The Niners take DT Kentwan Balmer from UNC, whom had impressed the Niners during the Senior Bowl!
EDIT: Jets traded for the Packers #30 spot.
Current update 3:17 PM
The board is still hot for some teams. Might the Niners trade back? We’ll see!
The Seahawks just selected DE Lawrence Jackson! Well, there goes the potential I would have liked to see in the Niners defense. The Niners will get to see this guy twice this year, and I would assume he can be just great in the right defense.
The Niners are now on the clock! Should they trade down? Should they get WR Devin Thomas from Michigan State?
Current update 3:00 PM
Cowboys and Seahawks switch spots. Cowboys might go with either with a wide receiver or a cornerback. Where do the Cowboys go?
EDIT: The Boys select CB Mike Jenkins from South Florida. Plenty wider receiver still available.
EDIT: Texans take T Duane Brown from Virginia Tech. So another tackle is taken, so it may not be the round where the Niners get that offensive lineman. All wide receiver still available. For defense, it could be still Quentin Groves or Lawrence Jackson that I see the Niners trying to get. DT Kentwan Balmer from UNC maybe?
Current update 2:51 PM
RB Chris Johnson from E. Carolina goes to the Titans. I am surprised that they would go this route, thinking that they might go for a wide receiver. But with this, all wideouts are still available on the board. Don’t know what the Titans have in store, but this is surely interesting.
Current update 2:44 PM
RB Rashard Mendenhall from Illinois goes to the Steelers. Adding him to Willie Parker in the backfield is really nice. I thought hte Steelers would try to replace Alan Faneca or even get a wide out, but this still leaves all wideouts available for the Niners… they want to go there.
Current update 2:30 PM
Falcons traded to #21, getting OT Sam Baker from USC. Another OT off the board, something that the Niners are paying close attention to. but someone they didn’t probably knew they wouldn’t get.
EDIT: Cowboys select RB Felix Jones from Arkansas. I think this guy has the ability to enhance the Cowboys offense… we’ll be interesting to see how he develops when the Niners play against the Boys.
Current update 2:12 PM
Panthers trade up to take the Eagles spot and get Jeff Otah, someone that the Niners might have used. But now they Panthers can use Otah to protect Jonathan Stewart.
Current update 2:03 PM
Ravens and Texans switch picks, meaning the Ravens go back to the #18 spot, possibly trying to draft QB Joe Flacco. Since they couldn’t get Matt Ryan, they should go for Flacco.
EDIT: Correct! Flacco is drafted by Ravens.
Current update 1:54 PM
Looks like the Chiefs are so far the front-runner for winner of this year’s draft. Some wheeling and dealing and they look to be in good shape for the future.
Lions took Gosder Cherilus, the guy I thought the Niners might take. With him off the board, now I would think the Niners might now go with someone on defense; possibly Quentin Groves, Lawrence Jackson. I still doubt they will go for a wide out.
Current update 1:39 PM
I think that the Panthers taking Jonathan Stewart from Oregon will actually benefit the team. Stewart for the most part is a very fun back to watch.
Still no word on the Niners making any draft moves, so it looks like it’s still #29. I added a draft chart at the bottom of this post.
Current update 1:15 PM
Patriots with the next pick take LB Jerod Mayo from Tennessee.
Current update 12:51 PM
Patriots have just traded their #7 pick, which came from the 49ers last year, with the Saints.
With that, the Saints have selected T Sedrick Ellis from USC.
The Jaguars have traded with the Ravens to get the #8 pick. I am a Jags fan as well, so I am curious as to who they get.
EDIT: Jags select DE Derrick Harvey from Florida. And LB Keith Rivers of USC looks to be going to the Bengals
Current update 12:28 PM
Bay Area fans, Darren McFadden is coming to Oakland. I have been a fan of his for the past few seasons and it will be nice to see him develop in the NFL right here in the Bay!
Current update 12:13 PM
The Rams select Chris Long with the #2 pick. Looks like the Rams may be scary on defense. Teaming up with Adam Carriker, the D-Line for the Rams may have a young motor trying to pound through the Niners in the two meetings this year. This is a very smart pick for the Rams. It’s not like their offense is really bad, so stacking up on defense is a great move for them. The Rams may be a little tougher this season.
Current update 12:00 PM
The draft has begun!
Current update 11:39 AM
49ers look to stay put in the first round. No trade rumors have surfaced. Looks like the team is content with what they have so far.
As of now, the team doesn’t seem to be moving from their #29 spot. The team will be content with what they have and won’t trade it away. The biggest concern for the team is helping out the O-Line and bulking up on defense, whether it’s at defensive end of linebacker. In any case, I would be surprised if the 49ers don’t draft a player to help them in those positions.
