Go NINERS!

Current update: 2:06 PM
With the team’s final pick, the Niners take OLB Larry Grant from Ohio State.

I’m gonna take a break after this 9-hour affair. I’ll come back with my recap later.

Current update: 2:02 PM
Niners will make their final pick in a few minutes. I’ll break down today’s picks after this draft pick.

Current update: 1:05 PM
QB Colt Brennan is now with the Redskins. I wasn’t really high on him, but I have seen what he can do. A great block of potential, but still needs a lot of work. Well, right now the Niners have one more pick left and they might just grab whomever is left over that can probably end up on the practice squad.
EDIT: Giants get QB Andre Woodson. Don’t know whom the Niners will get now.

Current update: 12:38 PM
Morgan improed every year at college in terms of reception, but he was not able to increase his yards per catch. He might not be the deep threat that the Niners need, rather the slot that will get you the necessary third down catches. He can be a work in progress, but with the Niners and Mike Martz, it might not be too bad.

Current update: 12:28 PM
With the 174th pick, the Niners take WR Josh Morgan from Virginia Tech.

Current update: 12:23 PM
The Niners are approaching their sixth round pick. Andre Woodson (Kentucky), Matt Flynn (LSU) and Colt Brennan (Hawaii) are still available. A wideout works too, but I think a QB is needed.

Current update: 11:45 AM
The Steelers just drafted Dennis Dixon. Now that offense will be great in the future. Sucks, I really wanted him. But oh well, it’s OK.

Current update: 11:13 AM
Oh yeah, the Bears have the Niners’ fifth-round pick from that tampering charge. Oh well, the team can live without it.

Current update: 11:02 AM
There are three quarterbacks that I would think the team might/should consider. Colt Brennan from Hawaii. Dennis Dixon from oregon. Andre Woodson from Kentucky. All three have been in Heisman consideration in the past two years, so I know these players have potential. Brennan might have the best time adjusting to Martz’s offense, but having an explosive Woodson or Dixon can give the team more hope if Alex Smith and Shaun Hill are failures.
I don’t like any of the wide outs remaining. Being a Cal Bears fan, Lavelle Hawkins is a wideout that I’ve watched and like. But that’s just me wanting a local guy. Realistically, the few receiver that might be worth a look might be Paul Hubbard of Wisconsin and Josh Morgan of VA Tech.

Current update: 10:44 AM
Instant 49ers has this great recap of Mike Nolan talking about the draft picks. The biggest point to bring out was that Limas Sweed almost became the team’s second pick. But Nolan stated that all the picks were players they saw better than a wide receiver at the point. Also, Nolan confirmed that Wallace would not replace Heitmann for the starting position at center.
Balmer will be in at 7 PM for a media conference today.

Current update: 9:40 AM
The Jets have selected CB Dwight Lowery of SJSU. I only make this update because I currently go to SJSU. Good stuff!

Current update: 9:22 AM
The 49ers don’t pick next until the 6th round. I really don’t see them trading up to any other spots, so it may be a couple hours before the Niners are back on the clock. I’m going to grab some breakfast right now, but I’ll keep an eye out for the draft while I’m at it.

Current update: 9:11 AM
Niners at #107 take C Cody Wallace from Texas A&M.
A center only means that Eric Heitmann and Davis Baas may be looking at competition. I like Heitmann, so this may be the battle for Baas’ spot. Remember, Baas will be out for most of training camp and might not see action until the season begins. That may be the factor as to why Wallace was selected.

Current update: 9:03 AM
The Browns traded up, getting their first pick of the draft finally.
Niners are two picks away. Let’s see if they go for a wide out or they might still try to get that linebacker to compliment Willis. Or maybe this is the round the Niners take Dennis Dixon. Is Kentucky’s Andre Woodson another good QB? I like Dixon more but Woodson was impressive this past year..

Current update: 8:24 AM
It’s going to be a little wait before the Niners get to their next pick at #107. Still trying to figure out about Smith. He’s a great talent, a sleeper somewhat. Maybe Nolan sees something that I don’t.
EDIT: WR Mario Manningham was drafted by the NY Giants. Well, that’s one guy that the Niners might have liked.

Current update: 7:36 AM
With the 75th overall pick, the Niners select CB Reggie Smith of Oklahoma. LB Dan Connor had been taken with the previous pick, a player that I thought the team might look for.

Smith can play a little safety, but he’s listed at cornerback. The Niners already have a great secondary, but drafting another player isn’t what I had expected. This probably would go for some depth on the chart, but I am not too sure where the Niners can fit him in. There will be a little competition in trying to find playing time for Smith. They might put him as a kick returner to back up Allen Rossum.

Current update: 7:24 AM
Not as much excitement right now for the third round. Things are going by rather quickly and smoothly. I see the Niners possibly grabbing a wide receiver like Early Doucet or possibly that linebacker they need.
With this new streamline format, this is going by real quick.

Current update: 7:09 AM
The second day of the draft has started. Niners might stay put with their pick in this round.

The 49ers got two very important components yesterday. Now, we might see the team go for that linebacker or wide receiver. Maybe they can grab that Dennis Dixon guy, or some other quarterback that can be a game changer.

It’s harder to predict the second day of the draft, but this is where the great potential talents are found, where the diamond in the roughs are located. Where’s the best steal? We’ll see.

Not too sure myself. Last year we drafted players for out secondary also in Goldson and Brown. Not too sure why they got Smith.

Maybe cuz they’re going to get rid of “StumblinBlock Strickland”. LOL

That might be true, but getting a backup this early into the draft?

Yeah, I dont understand it either. Miami swapped third round picks with Detroit and all the Lions gave up was a 6th. Couldnt the 49ers have done that with someone to get ahead of Carolina to snatch up Connor? Or maybe they feel okay at linebacker. From what I understand, Dan Connor isnt great in coverage.

They should of grabbed a wide reciever with that early pick like Nick said or another O lineman.

Actually, accordfing to Mike Nolan, Limas Sweed, the WR from Texas was highly considered for the second round pick at #39. Niners almost took him, but I guess they wanted to ensure they have protection.

I wish they would of selected a QB too. Is Colt Brennan still out there?
