49ers pipe dreams: Brett Favre can come to The City
I cannot believe it! I did not see this coming at all!!!! [/sarcasm]
The situation for this comes to the Packers, who now have to wonder what they need to do about it. They have reworked their offense and have been preparing Aaron Rodgers for the upcoming season all camp. It would be wrong to push that all aside for Favre. Yet at the same time, this is Brett Favre though. A chance to have him return would mean wonders for the Packers.
However, due to this situation, if Favre does want to play for one more season and the Packers do not want him back under center, there might be an opportunity that Favre will be available in the market. Since Favre was placed in the reserve-retirement list, his current contract does not affect the Packers.
According to ESPN, there’s a scenario where the team could just terminate that contract and Favre becomes a free agent.
If the Packers resist a stronger push by Favre to return, sources speculate that the quarterback could press the team to release him from his contract so that he could seek a job with another team. A league official said that Favre could force a decision by asking the Packers, in writing, to reinstate him to active status. The team would have to comply or release him.
If that’s the case, my pipe dream ways tell me that Favre has a chance to join the 49ers. REMEMBER, THIS IS JUST WISHFUL THINKING. But it’s so wishful, that I might just really believe it.
Looking at the way the Packers ended last season, they were a group of young talent that had yet found its identity. Before the start of last season, I didn’t know who was the running back for the team. There was no expectancy for the Packers to go 13-3. No one saw it coming. But because of that, Favre had more control of the team. He knew how to guide his team because they were all so young.
If the Niners look at Favre, he could wonders for the team. The Niners are more talented (on paper) than the Packers were in the beginning of last season. Their offense may be complex, but it works for Favre’s gunslinging style. And hey, the Niners are a whole bunch of potential talent in a very weak division.
Out of all the playoff teams from last year, all of them have a set starting quarterback. The Niners don’t have that.
We know that the battle for the quarterback spot in SF is between Alex Smith and Shaun Hill… and JT O’Sullivan if you will. But what if neither of those three meet up to the expectations? What if Favre is that possibility of a quarterback that we know can lead the team?
Favre said he would probably join the Packers at the later part of this month. Maybe the Niners can sign Favre and try him out for the preseason? Maybe that could really give the 49ers an established quarterback.
But probably not. Would Favre want to join an unestablished team? Would Favre want to play anywhere else than Green Bay for that love of football? I don’t know. But I do know that this idea of mine is not likely. In fact, I think by month’s end, Favre remains retired and we move on with life.
But if the quarterback situation here doesn’t improve, I’m open for the idea of Favre coming to San Francisco. For all those years he spent torturing us in the playoffs… maybe he can take us back to the playoffs.
Farfetched thinking? Sure. It could be that summer sun that is getting to me, but that’s OK. I would love Favre to stay retired, for the sake of football and his legacy. But if he wants to play one more… go for it!
WISHFUL THINKING IS ALWAYS FUN THINKING THAT HURTS NOBODY
Here’s Favre retirement speech from earlier this year. Up to this point I believed this was for real. Now I don’t know what to think. I hope it stays real though.

yeah… wishful thinking. if Brett comes back, he won’t come back to an awful team in San Francisco. Brett will either go back to the Pack or back on his tractor in Mississippi.

Yeah, it is wishful thinking. Like I said earlier, this idea is really farfetched. I don’t think that he would play for any other team other than the Pack. I think if the Pack really stick with Rodgers (which they should), he’s gonna stay retired.

Tell you what, give us Frank Gore, and we’ll give you the rights to Brett. Heck, we’ll throw in Bart Starr and Paul Hornung too.
He’s retired, folks. He said himself that this story was nothing but rumors.

I know that. But at the time this news broke out, it didn’t sound like it. So I decided to think about a possibility that won’t happen. But it was fun to dream about it.
