Un-Bear-able

What a week for the Chicago Bears.  First, Devin Hester keeps the Bears’ playoff hopes alive by having another MVP type game.  It sounds weird saying a return man is a team’s MVP, but is there anyone else worthy of it on the Bears?  I didn’t think so.  However, with the good, there’s always the bad.  Later in the week, it was announced that Cedric Benson was out for the year with an ankle injury.  Although he’s been underachieving quite a bit, it leaves the Bears very thin at running back.  When I saw that Adrian Peterson would be the lead back for the Bears, I got excited for a second.  Then I remembered that it’s not THAT Adrian Peterson who is starting for the Bears.

Not only is the running game going to be an issue for the Bears, but it essentially puts the rest of the games on the shoulders of Rex Grossman.  With a quarterback rating of 63.3, Grossman is third to last in the NFC, trailing only Trent Dilfer and Alex Smith of the 49ers.  He also has the 2nd worst TD/INT%, at 1.7%.  Not only is Grossman playing for his starting job every week against Brian Griese (or Kyle Orton, who people have forgotten is still on the team), he’s playing for a contract next year. When I polled 25 people here at UT Austin as to who the what the Bears solution should be at quarterback, one person said Kyle Orton, one said they should just give up, and 23 said all they cared about was Tony Romo.  Quite frankly, its not looking too good for Grossman or the Bears.  The defense isn’t playing at the level that got them to the Super Bowl last year.  Brian Urlacher has called out his teammates, saying that this is the most see-saw team he has ever played on.  When your best player calls you out, you know something is wrong.

In all honesty, I feel that this is a lost season for the Bears.  The rest of the schedule is brutal.  All five teams have something to play for, have some way that they can get into the playoffs.  Sure, the Bears can get in as well, as long as Devin Hester keeps getting two return touchdowns a game.  What’s the possibility of that?  Very unlikely.  I feel like the entire defense has underperformed.  Cedric Benson, too.  And don’t even get me started on Griese or Grossman.  Hopefully next year, the Bears can use a draft pick to draft or trade for a quarterback (Brady Quinn, anyone?).  This season has been downright awful, and looks to continue the trend of Super Bowl losers missing out on the playoffs.  Inconsistent play, underachieving, and injuries have killed this team.  Just sad.  Is there any other way to describe it?

Oh yeah.  Unbearable.

How the heck do you talk about the underperforming Bears and never even mention the awful play of the offensive line?

And looking at Grossman’s season quarterback rating is a bit disingenuous, don’t you think? He has clearly been a different quarterback since coming back from his benching.

[…] want the Giants to win, but it’s questionable whether that should even be a ballgame. It’s been a struggle for the Bears all season lengthy. Devin Hester’s been on a roll though, […]
