Bills sign Parrish to extension

The Marv Levy era at One Bills Drive continued its trend of rewarding good play with contract extensions before the player becomes a restricted or unrestricted free agent. It happened for Jason Peters, Brian Moorman and Rian Lindell. Now, wide receiver and punt return specialist Roscoe Parrish is the beneficiary.

The team announced today that the team agreed on a contract extension with the three-year veteran, but did not disclose terms in accordance to team policy.

This year Parrish has improved upon his punt return numbers, after an explosive second season. This year he leads the league with a 17.5-yard average including one touchdown return.

In the receiving department, Parrish already has a career-high 33 receptions this season. He has 307 yards, one touchdown and 18 first downs.

Parrish was drafted in the second round of the 2005 draft after he posted a 4.37 40-time at the combine. Despite his small stature (5-9, 171), Parrish is one of the quickest and most elusive players in the league. In running routes, few players can keep up with him in and out of the breaks.

I don’t know the terms of the deal yet, but his rookie contract would’ve run out after next season. He was scheduled to earn $435,000 this year and $520,000 next season.

I doubt it’s much more than Josh Reed is making (1.8 million in 2008 and 2.02 million in 2009). Parrish is an elite returner, but he doesn’t appear to be much more than a third wide out.

As long as they didn’t break the bank on Roscoe, I approve this signing. Having a game changer on special teams is a big advantage.

Wilson heads to the IR

In other news free safety George Wilson was placed on the IR after breaking two ribs last week. Linebacker Blake Costanzo was activated from the practice squad.
