Circling the Wagons

Who will be the Buffalo captains in 2008?

Last year, the NFL installed an official captain system for teams with a badge they would wear on the jersey. Under the badge are stars, which will get filled in for every year the player serves as a team captain.

Buffalo named Coy Wire, Brian Moorman, Angelo Crowell, Chris Kelsay, J.P. Losman and Lee Evans captains.

I’m thinking it’s going to be a year of change for the Bills captains.

Due to a sever injury, the Bills released Wire, a linebacker and special teams leader. As I said in my last post, I feel that Losman is still a team leader. However, I think the starting quarterback needs to be the captain. The quarterback keeps the offense focused in the huddle and needs to be someone everyone can trust.

So barring any injuries, Trent Edwards should take Losman’s captaincy. That might create some awkwardness in the locker room, but it’s already going to be weird with both quarterbacks still on the roster.

If Edwards takes over, that leaves one more captain position. Under my idea, Evans and Edwards would represent the offense, Crowell and Kelsay lead the defense and Moorman becomes the lone special teams representative. I don’t see any reason to have two on that third of the game.

For the last one I think we need a leader on the offensive line. Our games are won in the trenches and our five guys up front are lacking an official leader. I’m nominating either Derrick Dockery or Jason Peters. Dockery is known as a better spokesman for the team and has more experience than Peters so he gets the nod.

I’m sure everyone reading this has a different view on things. Post your ideal captains as a comment.

The only one I’m going to disagree with is Kelsay because in my opinion it takes more to be a TEAM LEADER than just wanting and accepting the role(like the way Schobel won’t). You have to PLAY UP TO IT. Kelsay is alright but come on, let me oppose you by saying WE don’t need an official captain on the D-line, those guys didn’t play that well together last year(with the exception of bright flashes from McCargo), and NONE of them deserve “captaincy” this year. So my nod goes to someone who has proven himself on this team, is a stand-out and stand-up guy, a character guy, a smart guy, and a PRODUCTIVE guy= the only truly high talented CB on our roster right now, come on you know him?———- YES! YOU GOT IT. Terrence McGee. Thank You, case closed. I have always been a big supporter of Jabari Greer getting on the field more though, and before last year. He’s a solid CB, don’t doubt him BABY!He only got thrashed by Moss because he was thrown in there and didn’t get to prepare all week for him(if he had he would have SHUT HIM DOWN!,lol, well maybe not, but he probably would have had a better day than he did).

Kelsay certainly has taken a good amount of heat. I can’t talk for his locker room presence and leadership, but his on the field production was horrid last year. He isn’t a big sack guy, Buffalo gave him the big numbers because he’s good in run support. I just don’t think Kelsay will be stripped of his captaincy.

McGee would be an interesting nominee, I don’t think there are many CB’s with captain positions. Champ Bailey maybe? That’s because they don’t need to provide much leadership on the field, they are out on an island. The linebackers, safeties and DL do a lot more talking.
