Circling the Wagons

Why not bring Ocho-Cinco to Buffalo?

In case you haven’t paid attention to football in the past few months, Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson wants out of Cincinnati. He hasn’t been quiet about it either, publicly demanding a trade on the radio, ESPN and whatever medium he can find. Even teammate and close friend T.J. Houshmandzadeh agreed yesterday:

“If he’s not traded, it’s going to be a problem.”

Johnson’s most recent demand is that he would like to be moved before next weekend’s NFL Draft. Nothing has come out about the Bengals front office actively shopping a trade, but it’s inevitable that they will. So, why shouldn’t Buffalo put out an offer.

The team looked to add a veteran receiver this off-season, but decided Bryant Johnson was seeking too much money. Chad Johnson already has a contract and is a proven receiver. The only downside is that 85 is 30-years-old.

Johnson’s statistics show he would make an impact. Except for his rookie year in 2001, Johnson has had at least 1,100 yards per season. He has 49 career touchdowns and a 15-yard reception average. Additionally, Johnson would add height at 6-1, great leaping ability and hands.

Buffalo could use a second or third round pick to make the deal.

The obvious questions are character related. Would Johnson become a distraction in the Buffalo locker room, or would he be on his best behavior? Would the flamboyant receiver be content catching passes from second-year quarterback Trent Edwards? Could he and Lee Evans coexist?

I don’t claim to know the answers to any of those questions, but I think it’s worth a shot. Buffalo would become a threat to win the division with Johnson opposite of Evans.

What do you think? If you are running the Bills, do you make a move to get Johnson?

YES, try to make the move-we will clean up his attitude and character. Which if you think about it isn’t really bad- he hasn’t had many outside of football problems-like breaking the law all the time. He’s just always been a little flamboyant(OK, maybe a LOT!). Anyway, the Bengals really need to move him, and any team that brings his services into thier ball club could end up getting one hell of a deal. I’m not sure the Bengals could really ask for much more than just a 1st round draft pick. Think about it, wouldn’t you rather have OCHO-CINCO than any of the players we are projected to maybe get in the first round. Thomas, Kelly, Harvey, Jenkins, DRC- are you kidding me I’d take Johnson in a heartbeat over any of them-he’s had 6 consecutive 1000 yard seasons, which means he’s a proven STUD. However, he is 30 years old already-which kind of makes me say- maybe I’d rather have Devin Thomas, especially since he’s only 20 years old, that’s a huge age difference, and I’m not so sure Chad could perform better than Thomas in our system the first year under it.

That’s really not a bad idea. They were going to draft a wide out with their first round pick. And considering they could get Johnson for less than a #1, this year’s top pick could go towards further improving the defense. I like the thought.

Absolutely not. Lee Evans is the #1 receiver. No way ocho cinco will come to play here in Buffalo. The Bills need to extend Evans’ contract after this season and if Chad Johnson is on the Roster, Evans will be a #2 and chances are he would seek a #1 spot somewhere else. Bad idea, not to mention the “high character standards” in Buffalo. Johnson’s character/attitude is the exact opposite of what our front office is looking for. Draft a young receiver in the 2nd round.

Tommy, I don’t think Lee would be opposed to the idea. Look how poorly he did in 2007 without a true threat as a No. 2 wide receiver.

Walter says I think that he would made a big inpact on the team and we could win the division and go deep in the playoffs.

Ocho-Stink-Hoe is a bit of a baby, but we could definitely use his services. Though as I stated at the bottom of the comment- I believe Devin Thomas could probably perform just as well as Johnson under our system in their first year with it. Plus, obviously, he is 10 years younger than Chad who is 30 years old already. Although, Chad is threating to hold out on the entire season if he doesn’t get traded. So people that have been point ratioing the matter are pretty off because the Bengals are not in a position to get equal value for him. Therefor, Johnson maybe be traded for something as meager as a 2nd rounder, and an additional 4th rounder-and that’s it. DE Jared Allen(Chiefs)is looking to be traded right now possibly to the Vikings where it’s already been figured that they would have to give up thier 1st round, 3rd round, and possibly another later rounder(probably a 6th) just to get him because that’s where his value is as far as his production. Chad you’d think would be in the same boat, especially considering that Allen was suspended in the first two games of the year last year. However, Allen has never been a problem in the locker room, and was suspended for alcohol related incidents-not steroids, and came into the season rarin’ to go and put up great production. If we could get Chad for a 2nd and 4th- I say we do it, we have an additional 4th rounder now anyway, and we could still use the 1st pick to get Thomas. Imagine: Lee#1, Johnson#2, and Thomas#3. I think our WR corps just became explosive as hell if that happened. We could shut Ocho-Stink-Hoe up, and make him a good little boy, he’s not that bad-JUST a LOUD MOUTH!

Jared Allen-just got traded-it’s official, and he’s officially overpaid! 74mil over 6years, over 30mil in signing bonuses, and the Vikings had to give up their 1st round selection, and get this- BOTH of thier 3rd round selections, plus they are swapping 6th round choices. If you ask me, the Vikings got royally screwed and I’m not sure why they though Allen was worth this much. He’s good and one of the top 5 DEs in the game, but he’s not the best and only the very best DE should get the most a DE has ever been paid in history. Watch out, the Chiefs just might not be so bad after next year once all that young talent starts developing.

I’m a bit surprised with giving Allen that much money, especially with his history of off-the-field issues. I wonder if we could’ve done that with Schobel two years ago? I agree about the Chiefs though. They are going to rebuilt heavily with this draft. I personally hope they stick with Croyle

So much money- so little time! Of course, remember the trade Ditka made to acquire Ricky Williams, he gave up his ENTIRE draft that year, and a 1st rounder and 3rd rounder for next year. Somehow the Redskins didn’t create a dynasty out of all those picks- and I’m not really sure how they didn’t. The Redskins should have at least traded up or down through those upcoming 2-3 seasons, but they didn’t and just drafted with their picks-and drafted horribly! Croyle might be OK, I think the Chiefs should definitely give him a go and not draft a QB this year. Matt Ryan is overrated! Yeah, with the picks and the money they had to give Allen-I don’t know what in God’s name Minnesota is thinking right now. Hey, if they need some better scouts and advisors around there- maybe YOU and I should apply, hey DAN! I live pretty close to Minnesota so I wouldn’t even have to move really. LOL!

I would love to make a career out of being a scout.

As for Minnesota, I think I see what they are going for. They are going to control the clock with Peterson and score points. That is going to force teams to throw a lot in the second half.

Their run D is already solid with Big Pat and Kevin Williams, now they have a sack machine to come off the edge. They lost Udeze to Leukemia or something.

Yeah, I knew that, but at this cost. What happens, and what does everyone say, if the Vikings somehow end up having a poor season. Yeah, and it is Leukemian with Udeze which is really unfortunate, but I think this was an entirely wrong move to try to replace him. Allen is good, and probably better than Udeze, but the Vikings have more pressing needs than a D-lineman. In fact, one could argue that they didn’t need to pursue a lineman period. They still have DE Erasmus James, are they ever planning on using him or what?

They also have T-Jack playing quarterback…bleh.
