A Typical Cleveland Ending…
This is really getting old.
People outside of Cleveland wonder why Clevelanders are so cynical and have such bad attitudes towards everything sports related in this town and why “next year” is always going to be “next year”.
Most of us are still in mourning over yesterday’s meltdown at Heinz Field, wondering how the hell we managed to piss away a 21-9 lead at the half and what the hell Romeo Crennel was thinking when he challenged Heath Miller’s touchdown grab with 3:13 remaining in the fourth quarter to blow a timeout that everyone knew the Browns would need. If they have that timeout available, it’s very possible that they could have taken a shot at the end zone, or at least gave Phil Dawson a closer shot to tie the game and send it into overtime. And to think, I was actually beginning to think that Romeo actually knew what he was doing as a coach.
But in typical Cleveland fashion, we found a way to lose.
Derek Anderson was ridiculous in the first half, throwing for three touchdowns, but couldn’t get anything going in the second half, as he attempted to force balls in that the receivers clearly had no shot of grabbing.
As bad as yesterday was, there is still some sort of silver lining that we can take away.
To close out the season, the Browns have games against the Cardinals, Texans, Jets, Bills, and 49ers, all games they are capable of winning. The Steelers have a bit of a tougher road, as they still have to face Jacksonville, Baltimore on the road, and huge game on the road against New England. They also have to face St. Louis on the road, which could be an upset waiting to happen. With that said, if the Browns can manage to win most of these games and Pittsburgh loses a few, they could be right up there for a division crown and a possible playoff berth. So lets not give up hope just yet.
Also, how about the season Josh Cribbs is having? He’s beginning to look Dante Hall-esque as a kick returner. Yesterday, he totaled 204 yards on four kick returners, taking one of them to pay-dirt in the fourth to give the Browns a 28-24 advantage. For you non math majors, that’s 51 yards per return. At this point, he’s a lock for the Pro Bowl. I’d like to see Crennel get him more involved in the offense. He could be our own personal Antwan Randel El.
Next week, the Browns have an all important conference match up in Baltimore with the Ravens, who have basically fallen off the map as of late. The Browns already took it to them earlier this year, but I think both teams go into this game with a chip on their shoulder.
Mr. Beckwith will have a pre-game post later this week if he can muster up the energy to get out of his sweat pants, take a shower, and put an end to the mourning of this latest collapse in Cleveland sports.

DUDE, WHEN YOUR RETURN MAN HAS MORE YARDS THAN YOUR OFFENSE DOES, THEN THERE IS ALOT TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT. 204 - 146 RATIO. GET REAL, YOUR RETURN MAN IS THE ONLY REASON YOU GUYS EVEN LOOKED LIKE YOU HAD A CHANCE, AND IS THE REASON THE GAME LOOKS AS RESPECTABLE AS IT CAME OUT TO BE FOR THE BROWNS. SO, DON’T GO THINKING YOUR TEAM PISSED A GAME AWAY, JUST THINK OF IT AS REALITY SINKING IN,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

David - that couldn’t have been Bill Cowher right? I mean if he spoke that much he would have drenched the entire press room, and no one could have recorded the quote.

David -
Do you have any kind of education?
YOU TYPE LIKE MY EIGHT YEAR OLD BROTHER DOES WHEN HES TALKING TO HIS FRIENDS IN HIS WORLD OF WARCRAFT CHAT ROOMS!!!!!!!!!!!>……………….
I MEAN SERIOUSLY!!!!@#)!@)!
You must be from Pittsburgh.
Yeah, Josh Cribbs basically kept us in that game. So what? That doesn’t discount the fact that the Browns were still in it. You act like Derek Anderson played horrible. I believe he took the team down field 71 yards for a touchdown on his first drive. We had a 21-9 lead on the road and going into the half. How can you say we didn’t piss this one away?
Enjoy the victory man. I’m not going to bash the Steelers. They are a good team and out played us in the second half. Congrats. I will enjoy watching New England kick your wee-wee’s in on Dec. 9.

Ultimately it doesn’t matter how Clev was in this game and kept the score close, they lost! Just like they have to the Steelers for 9 straight games now, how embarassing for their fans. For the last 5 years Baltimore (the real browns by the way), have been the real rival to the Steelers. The Browns have been a joke and mostly an easy win, LOL.
You are improved this year I will give you that. But as long as you have the league’s worst defense you are screwed! Get a clue figure out how to draft for defense, duh. Until then you will never be a serious team for getting to or winning in the playoffs. You have to be at least out of the basement with regards to defensive ratings before you start talking how well you are doing.

True Mitch.
The Browns’ defense hasn’t really stopped anyone all year. However, I think stats may be a bit misleading, because they haven’t been as bad as everyone says they are. Anyone who has actually watched every game realizes that the defense has stepped up on a few instances in some pretty key situations to keep us in games (see Seattle).
There’s no way the Browns should have drafted defense last year instead of taking Thomas/ Quinn in the first round. Joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach have basically been the reason that the Cleveland offense has been clicking on all cylinders so far and I don’t think anyone anticipated the defense to be this bad. For the most part, the defense had the same personel last season and kept us in a lot of games, whereas this season, its basically been the opposite.
The bottom line, we have improved, and despite our 32nd ranked defense, we are still in a position to make the playoffs, which is a pretty big accomplishment for this team.

Mitch,
If the browns need to draft defense (which they do) the steelers need to either draft or coach special teams better. you can’t ignore one aspect of the football game (special teams) just because your team sucks at it and say the browns were lucky to be in the game. who knows, maybe anderson would have drove them down the field on those two drives.
the browns, in fact, won’t step up into the steelers class until they improve their defense. but the steelers won’t move up into the class of the patriots or colts (or even dallas or green bay) until they shore up their special teams and are able to convert first and goal into 7 and not 3 points.
the browns relied on their strengths to keep them in the game. that’s not lucky, that’s good football. you guys keep acting like special teams don’t matter and i can see why by watching your team.

I’m calling it…5-2 for the Browns down the stretch!

IF they win this Sunday in B’more. If they lose, then the season could quickly go in a mini tailspin.

5-2 down the stretch would be nice. But I agree, if we lose this weekend in Baltimore it could quickly go downhill for them.
