Browns Bites

Browns Release Bentley

A day after he passed a team physical and was cleared to practice with the team for the first time since the summer of 2006, Browns offensive lineman LeCharles Bentley has been released by the team.

From Cleveland.com:

“LeCharles came back to Cleveland to be in integral part of the Cleveland Browns, his hometown team,” said [Bentley’s agent, Jonathan] Feinsod. “Through no fault of the Browns at all, they didn’t know if LeCharles was going to come back or not and they moved on with their plans.

“But this is not the same team LeCharles signed with. They have commitments to other players. LeCharles is not ready to be an insurance policy at this point.”

What a strange end to a strange situation.

I’ve done some thinking about this today and it’s hard to point fingers and blame anyone for any of this. Bentley originally signed with the Browns when their offensive line was absolutely terrible and a liability season after season, so he and the team had every reason to believe he would be the building block of the o-line. Then last year happened. The team drafted Joe Thomas, signed Eric Steinbach and re-signed Hank Fraley after Bentley was placed on the injured list.

Like everyone else in this area who watched Bentley dominate at St. Ignatius and Ohio State, I would have loved to watch him don the Orange and Brown. Unfortunately, the Browns are heading in a new direction then they were in 2006 when Bentley signed. Oh well. Hopefully everything works out for Bentley and he’s picked up by a team and returns to his old form.

I actually just heard about this on the radio and it saddens me, for sure. I really wish it would have worked out for him after seeing how happy and genuinely thrilled he was after signing with us and having a “homecoming.”

You’re right about the Browns being a different team in ‘08 compared to ‘06. There is a left tackle who will be a Pro Bowl lock for the next 10 years, and a left guard who should have been a Pro Bowler last season if the idiot coaches and players knew anything (he was #1 in fan voting). Fraley played at a Pro Bowl level and could go to Honolulu based simply on the line’s production as a whole. Bentley was looked at as a savior in ‘06. Now, in ‘08, he was just a side dish (if even that) instead of the entree on this offensive line.
