Day one over, Cardinals Select Cromartie and Campbell
Finally the first day of the draft and went. After all the waiting and anticipation the Arizona Cardinals drafted Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie with the 16th pick and Calais Campbell with the 50th.
I know a lot of Cardinal fans were hoping Arizona would pick Rashard Mendenhall when he fell to them. I wouldn’t have been upset at all if they decided to go with the stud running back, but I really like Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. I’ve been saying the Cardinals will pick DRC for the last 4 months and I’ve felt he’s a freak talent that you can’t pass up. This improves the Cardinals secondary dramatically right away. I’m very pleased with this pick as you can tell, I know some of you might not be too happy because Mendenhall was there, but I really feel Cromartie is going to be the real deal.
Arizona’s second round pick was DE Calais Campbell from Miami. I love this pick. The speculation was Arizona would take a running back at this spot, but DE was a need and Calais Campbell was the best player available. Most scouts and analyst including myself thought Campbell would be drafted in the first round. So I definitely see this pick as a steal. Campbell is a massive 6 foot 8 and 295 pounds, most of which is muscle. He has good quickness and leverage for a guy his size, so nobody should worry too much about that.
Things went better than I thought they’d go. I’m very encouraged and excited to see what happens tomorrow for Day two. Here’s a couple guys you should pay attention to for tomorrow…

I don’t even know where to begin with my excitement. I am a real big Mendenhall fan (think the steelers got a heckuva steal) but DRC had to be the pick. He has the potential to an incredible game changing talent that the cardinals desperately needed in their secondary. On top of the phenomenal talent he adds, he provides much needed depth. I’d like to see him bulk up just a bit so he can provide a bit more run support and Coach John Lott is just the guy to help him accomplish that.
The second round pick of Calais Campbell was also a great pick. I too thought he would be a late first round pick so getting him in the middle of the second was a fantastic steal. He too adds depth to a much needed area and he has the potential to develop into a dominant force along the D-line if he can learn to play with some improved technique. Really a fantastic first day.
Looking towards Day 2 and round 3 I think, like most others do, that there is a very strong chance the cardinals will finally pick up their running back in either kevin smith or Jamaal Charles. However if either chris Avaril or Dan Connor are sitting there i would not be surprised to see the cards continue drafting the best available player (can you honestly believe they have actually done this in both rounds!!??)
Great first day and can’t wait to see how they follow it up.

Mike, I knew you would love the Cardinals draft. I think a lot of Cardinal fans loved the first day of the draft. As you know, DRC was the guy I hoped for all along and Calais Campbell is a guy I know you liked, especially in the second round. What a steal that was. Both players will add much needed depth and become play makers in the near future. I’m excited to see what they get in day 2 as well.
