Chargers Confidential

Chargers Confidential in Eli Country

Hey fellow Boltheads, I’m in New York to cover Tony Gwynn’s induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame for MVN’s Padres page, San Diego Spotlight.

But with Training Camp starting up, I can’t help but have football on the brain too… so I’m looking around, and you know what? I don’t see it.

Wasn’t Eli Manning’s whole unstated reason he didn’t want to play in San Diego that it was about the star power? Oh, he talked about winning traditions and coaching staffs but we all know that was a smokescreen. It was Madison Avenue that he was interested in, not the Meadowlands.

So, shouldn’t I be seeing his mug on billboards and stuff? Nope, I’m not seeing it. Eli, I thought going to New York was going to allow you to overtake your brother as the face of NFL quarterbacking? L.T. has more of a presence in your city than you do, if only because his mug is jumping off the front cover of every fantasy football magazine on newsstands and in bookstore windows. Yes, of those very same Chargers. You know, the ones that had the best record in the league last year and are the choice of many insiders to win it all this time now that Marty’s record of playoff frustration is off their backs.

Hmmm… I guess that would be another failure there Eli. Maybe there really is such a thing as karma.

As a diehard Chargers fan I have but one thing to say - this IS a stupid article.

I think every Chargers fan has moved on from the whole Manning / Rivers draft. Like with the Vick / Tomlinson trade, just smile confidently from ear to ear that Rivers ended up with a bolt on his helmet and Manning went elsewhere. Even straight up it looks as though the Chargers got the better of the deal, but when you factor in that they also parlayed that into Merriman, Kaeding and Roman Oben, then you’re talking about perhaps the greatest pickpocket in NFL Draft history, with only the Dallas / Minnesota Herschel Walker deal mentioned in the conversation.

Rich this is a great article, dont let the ignorant Giants fans get to you. Eli Manning thought he was too good for the San Diego Chargers, well Eli how did that turn out for you?

this is such a pointless article. How bitter are you about a trade that happened 4 years ago where by all accounts your team go the the better end of the deal. Most articles from MVN aim to provide something of substance this was just pure horse sh**. (profanity edited)

im a Giants fan in San Diego and even people i work with are over the eli deal. i mean cmon its been 4 years and u are still bitchin.
first of since i live in your city i learned alot of things about most of
your fans not all but most. you guys are what they call fairweather fans even junior said about the fans in san diego. all of a sudden since the chargers started winning you guys start watching but as soon as you guys start loosing forget about it, you wont see alot of fans. And u can try to fool other people from other states but i live here and i see it. for example…. not more than 3 years ago your games were being blacked out on your own network becasue they werent selling enough tickets. now all of a sudden you guys sold out on your tickets now what does that tell you. u see i like the chargers as a team but some of you charger fans are fake and ignorant. i promose you i know more about your team than most of you guys who read these idiot articles that this moron writes. and trust me its been tested and most people lose.

Rich take a look at all these crybaby Giants fans, I laugh when I see that sissy QB throw for that pathetic team. Chargers fans are suppsed to have a rivalry with the Raiders, but I cant stand the Giants and there obnoxious fans, Giants fans you suck!

you really have to get over your man crush on eli manning. if he was in san diego no one would know who the hell he is, and they do know about LDT because he might be the best running back of all time when its all said and done. giant fans are true football fans, not whiny bitches who can’t stop crying about how manning didnt want to play for your choking piece of sh** you call a team

Hmmmm… very strong reaction for what was simply a quick observation I made while on the other end of the country. Childish, eh? Maybe I should get childish more often? You know what they say about there being no such thing as bad publicity, right?
I was in New York and the idea came to me and I blogged about it. Now I think that I need to do so more often. I may as well address some of these comments.
In regards to this being “pointless”; No, it’s not. It isn’t about on the field performance, though. It is more an observation on the world that surrounds the NFL and how there is far more to decisions some of these people make than just the playing field. Does anyone out there really think the Manning family made their comments and manipulated the situation because of the playing field? I do retain some small amount of bitterness, and I found it interesting that L.T. had a bigger media presence in NYC than Eli did. Although, from a business standpoint… the Manning’s were right. Eli looks like a strictly mediocre QB at this point, and he has made far more money in NY than he would have in San Diego.
Not all of us are “fairweather” either, although there is certainly a very large bandwagon effect in San Diego. I’ll refer you back a few weeks to my tattoo pics. You can call that many things… and I’ll be guilty of some of them. But not “fairweather”.
So tell me something, Giant fans… if you all are really so over this and we really suck because we remember it… why such a virulent reaction? “go kill yourself?” “you f***ing suck?” “man crush?” It really looks like you haven’t moved on from this at all.

ok im not that strung out like Jeremy is. And i never said all of you are fair weather fans but lets be serious just like you said there is a big bandwagon affect here and im saying that we arent perfect and you guys are no where near perfect. But you guys can pass judgment like that on Eli when he did lead us to a east championship and 2 playoff berths in his first 2 years as a starter. and both teams didnt do much in the playoffs and you are right about LT having a bigger media presence in NY because he is a future HOA already in his career and arguebally the best RB to ever play the game. And NY is a hard city to please believe me. so lets get over this ELI garbage and move on its been 4 years. do u guys like hearing the whole Ryan Leaf BS i mean cmon he didnt want to play here and it wasnt a direct diss tou you so why u worried about it. His dad didnt like the front office and thats it

and to the poster on # 11. listen to yourself or read your post and you will see who is crying and whining. i probably know about your team than you do and believe me dont test me becasue you will look stupid

You’re right about how much we hate still hearing about Ryan Leaf, Kev. Hell, I bought into him too. After he started 2-0 and looked dedicated in that second game, putting his head forward and going after the first down against the Titans, I got excited. I went out and bought a Leaf jersey that still hangs inn the back of my closet.
But I would argue that the Leaf situation made fans more angry in the Manning thing. So desperate we were to have a first-round QB pick work out and erase that nasty memory…
