Jared Allen on the Trade Block: Carl Peterson Has Worn Out His Welcome
Disclaimer: I reserve the right to stand corrected. And I hope that Carl Peterson proves me wrong.
The word out of Kansas City isn’t pretty. There is mass speculation that Jared Allen is being shopped around for draft picks. I wonder what the draft compensation for the moon is this time of year, because that’s the only compensation that I believe is fitting for Jared Allen to get. There are rumors that the Chiefs could get an extra first and second round pick in exchange for Allen. Umm… yeah, great idea Carl. Given that the first round pick would probably be spent on a less-than-qualified replacement for Allen, like Gholston, that means the Chiefs would get significantly worse at DE and would only have a 2nd round pick to show for trading away a pro bowler. Sounds like a brilliant plan to me.
There are situations where I can understand the Chiefs’ inability to re-sign a player of Jared Allen’s calibre. What blows my mind is that the Chiefs have spent all offseason clearing up cap room to spend on players like Jared Allen, and then they refuse to use it. There are two schools of thought on this issue: 1) the Chiefs don’t want to spend money on Jared Allen because they’re worried about how much he’ll cost and they don’t want to waste money on a player during a rebuild year; 2) Carl Peterson is too hard-headed to negotiate on Allen’s terms.
I think the latter scenario is more true than the former. Here’s why. The Chiefs have already committed to putting the franchise tag on Allen. That means that the Chiefs have, essentially, professed their willingness to pay, even if that means paying Allen roughly $10 million to be on their team for one season. If the Chiefs didn’t want to pay Allen in the short-term, they wouldn’t have franchised him.
That leaves us to the second point. The fact that Allen has been driven to seeking outside offers is a pretty clear sign that negotiations aren’t going well. Who here is really surprised? The negotiation for Larry Johnson got ugly. The front office crapped on Trent Green’s doorstep, then rubbed it in directly in his face. Kyle Turley went on Sirius NFL Radio a few months ago to publicly express his hatred of the Chiefs’ front office. Brian Waters appeared on Jim Rome a few weeks ago to express how much he hates the Chiefs. Greg Wesley has, on multiple occasions, called the front office out for not complying to his trade demands.
Do you mildly get the hint that most players aren’t exactly happy to be Chiefs right now? Unless proven otherwise, it appears that Carl Peterson is losing at a game he used to be good at. He was once passed off as a shrewd negotiator; now, he seems like a cantankerous old man who players no longer want to deal with.
I believe this goes back to the point that Carl Peterson has worn out his welcome. Peterson has done a lot of great things in Kansas City, but if Jared Allen is either traded from the Chiefs or is not secured to a long-term deal before the season, that will only be the straw that broke the camel’s back.

I can’t believe this, we’ve been searching for a dominant pass rusher for years, and we finally have our own who we drafted and developed. Yeah lets go ahead and trade him since DE’s like him are really easy to come by. I don’t get the point of trading a proven, ascending, dominant player for draft picks who with their potential being 100% realized and combined couldn’t make as big of an impact as Jared both on the field and in the locker room. I know we have a lot of holes, but please……

Carl has just told the Chiefs Nation, “Let them eat cake.”
And that is why we will behead you, Carl. Idiot.

Good point, Jon. I don’t know why everyone else can’t see this. What in the world good does it do to get rid of him if we have to use one of our highest picks to replace (hah - not possible) him?
It’s not like we’re getting 12 picks for Allen here! Hell, the talk is only of a first rounder this year (to be used on a DE) and a second rounder NEXT year.
To trade away the best player and leader of an ascending defense (which is the backbone of the team) for basically nothing? Ludicrous.
I can only see one justification for this - the front office knows for SURE that Allen is so pissed off that he won’t sign a long term deal and won’t be back next year. Then we lose an elite pass rusher and have nothing to show for it.
With the trade scenario we lose him, but have a servicable replacement and another first day draft pick.
But Allen probably wouldn’t be so pissed off if it weren’t for you know who…

DTR-You are exactly right. King Carl would have fit in well in the French royal court, totally out of touch with what’s going on outside his Arrowhead castle walls. If this were a Herschel Walker type of haul, you could justify it. But sometimes first and second-rounder don’t work out, especially KC linemen. Start with Ryan Sims and work backwards.

Listening to Rhonda on 610, she spoke with J Allen and their camp did not want this info out in the press. From Carl’s stance if that is true I would have Jared negotiate a contract with the Vikes to do the dirty work of negotiations for him. Then Allen knows his value and Chiefs can match or offer slightly less. Allen is not holding out, he loves the game too much we can franchise him for two years. If the contract with Vikes is a monster and the Vikes are willing to part with 1st and 2nd in 2008 or 1st (17th) and two 3rds (73th and 82nd), then pull the trigger. This is a DEEP draft in first three rounds.

If the Chiefs trade Jared Allen I am done as a Chiefs fan, period. I’m 42 years old and have been a Chiefs fan my whole life. The only reason we were halfway decent last year was our pass rush, aka Jared.
Is the front office so out of touch with what the fans want?

I have mixed feelings on the Allen trade. On one hand, Allen is as good as they come. On the other hand I keep thinking of the Hershel Walker-Minnesota trade the Cowboys once made. With that in mind, how crazy does this scenario sound?
If the Chiefs trade Allen to Minn and get the 17th overall pick, then suddenly have the ability to take Matt Ryan and an O-lineman in the first round. Now the question isn’t will they or should they, the question is will Baltimore believe that’s what the Chiefs will do. What if those 2 picks forced Baltimore’s hand and they were willing to deal with KC for the 5th pick or even for a Rivers/Eli type deal. Say they got 2 2nd rounders from the Ravens to move up 3 spots….Just a thought. But my question is, would Allen be worth one 1st round pick, 2nd round picks, and one 3rd round pick?
This is also giving Carl Peterson a LOT of credit, but he does seem to be a sneaky underhanded bastard that would steal a diaper off a baby.
Is this that crazy? Remember, think Hershel Walker…

Carl once said he doesnt loose players he wants to keep exception to edwards which we got back.
This means he doesnt care if he looses allen, allen is a country boy and prob told carl to shove it up his A_ _!!
Which in turn is what the fans are goin to do if he doesnt keep allen.

King Carl is running this franchise into the ground. Besides being a great player, Allen has shown that he loves the KC Chiefs fans. Watch him at a game compared to LJ. What a terrible decision.

Carl Peterson, is the stupidest person to ever manage a Pro Football team. This has got to be one of the stupidest moves if not the stupidest he has pulled off. Why in the hell would get rid of our best defensive player, let alone best player in general. I wish the fans had more control of the situation. This guy will get paid somewhere else and thats just frustrating that Carl (dip shit) Peterson wont pay up. Carl needs to take a pay cut to pay Jared. Hell, Carl needs to just retire, and find another job to screw up. I bellieve that 20 years ago he said he was going to have a Superbowl team within 5 years, well its been over 20 years now, and no Superbowl. How many seasons are we going to waste on him? If they get rid of Jared, I am done with the Chiefs until Carl Peterson is removed from our franchise. I will cancel my season tickets if Jared leaves. Makes since to trade our best player, for a rookie. This guy just opened a resturant in KC. WTF. Carl Peterson has no respect for the Chiefs, the Hunt family or the fans, if he did, he wouldn’t be looking into trading Jared. Im out

how many more stupid things are the hunt’s going to let the king get by with? Let me tell you. i have been a chiefs fan through thick and thin, win or lose they were my team. If the king doesn’t do everything in his power to keep jared, there will be alot of fans walking away from the chiefs and from arrowhead. jared is one great guy on and off the field. when he did the locker room show, i went a couple different times, and let me tell you everytime i see him, he always says how nice it is to see me again. does carl do that?

I am with Kristine. I am a Chiefs fan because of Jared Allen. Jared makes Chiefs football fun not to mention the only reason worth watching.I am done spending my money on the Chiefs. Win or lose I could always count on having fun watching Jared play. Jared loves to play football but he has been unhappy with the Chiefs for some time. I will be very depressed if he leaves us but at the same time I understand why he would want to go.

Fans look for something they can attach to-someone that embodies the personal characteristics that they so desire. Jared Allen is one such player. Ala Mark G., the Royals second basemen, and other gritty players, Jared Allen brings more to the table than just talent. Talent will only get a player so far, but it is dedication and an appreciation of the game that gets fans so excited. Allen is the essence of the Chiefs, or at least the Chiefs as a vision of what the common, hard-working Midwest fan wants to see. Football is a game, but with a talent coupled with a personality that is evident in Jared Allen, the move must transcend football. Losing Allen, to many Chiefs fans, will mean losing much interest in the team, at least until King Carl resigns/is fired.

I have to say I disagree with all of you about Carl Peterson. As a fan we have to have common sense
and think like a General Manager and understand their is a salary cap. If Mr. Peterson did not like Jared Allen he would not have put a franchise tag on him and pay him almost 10 million this year. Its my understanding
they just can’t work out a contract. If you look at Alex Rodriquez when he was with Texas Rangers they paid him 250 million and they couldn’t afford any other players. Mr. Peterson did make a mistake hiring the previous coach who left the team with the defensive a mess and an old offensive line and no experience wide receivers. Look at how everbody talked and treated Eli Manning last year. The media SUCKS !
Their going to Hate on the Chiefs, Players and fans are going to be unhappy when you are losing. We need to stick together. If we don’t have a playoff team in 2009-2010 season. Then Mr. Peterson needs to step down.

u fucking Chiefs fans are IDIOTS hahaha trade Jared Allen please you’ll suck more than u allready do!
GO RAIDERS!!!
April 20th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
I know the Raiders have made strides in free agency and in trades on paper; we will see if that insane amount of jack spent in the off-season will translate into more than 4 wins for them. We had the same record last year as you pat, and the Raiders finally got over the “getting beat by the Chiefs twice a year” hump last year at Arrowhead, congratulations! You spelled already wrong BTW…

I’m with Randy. If you think Carl doesn’t want to win as bad as anyone, Your Nuts! He has developed an organization, not just a team. The NFL has grown significantly in the past 20 years and for the most part, the Chiefs have been winners as well as a respected organization.
I will admit, several of his personnel decisions have been flops, but lets remember the urgency to win that developed when Mr Hunt began declining in health. There was a feeling that we were just a player or two away. There was no time to start rebuilding then. We survived that experiment with free agency in pretty good shape salary cap shape.
Carl will be gone in a couple of years and everyone will be happy. Insults like those from Trailer Trash Travis might just inspire him to put the team back to the way it was when he got here…except for the new Stadium of course!
Oh…I almost forgot! The Raiders are still the masters of taking the best talent in the league and finding a way to loose. Raiders Suck… not just Ass…Animal Ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You folks are blameing the wrong guy. Carl doesn’t do anything that isn’t approved by the Hunts. There has been a giant sucking sound for 20 years as the Hunts have sucked money out of KC to Texas. Carl is the reason that it has happened. He knows what the Hunts want and has delivered. Has everyone forgotten Steadman? He ran the team to make money and stayed on until he ran the team into the ground. It took years for the team to get over it. The Hunts will stick with Carl as long as he keeps the money rolling in.
