“Stupid is as Stupid Does”: How Other Teams’ Stoopedity(?) Made the Chiefs Draft Day Winners

I tried really hard to come up with something… something that could offer a different perspective on the Chiefs’ draft than the 1,000 other perspectives you see on “whocareswhatithink.com” or “ImARealScoutReallyIAmNoSeriouslyIAm.com.”

But I can’t. I can only hope to offer my own re-hashed analysis and hope that you’ll be interested in what I have to say. I want to be the one that picks apart at every single pick the Chiefs made. Quite frankly… it’s hard to do. I have never, ever in my life seen a draft where the Chiefs hit so many home runs in such a short period of time. Let’s begin….

First Round

There are some sources that suggest that the Chiefs were lucky that Glenn Dorsey and Brandon Albert fell to them. I couldn’t disagree more. As Forrest Gump’s Mama always said “Stupid is as stupid does.” Well, stupid did and the “stupids” in this case were the Raiders and the Lions. Glenn Dorsey is undoubtedly the best defensive player in the draft. I don’t think it’s even close and he’s probably the closest thing there was to a surefire starter in this entire draft. Yes, he does have some injury concerns, but it’s interesting how concerned people are about injuries that Dorsey not only played through, but also played dominantly through.

I think the Falcons were stupid for passing on Dorsey too, but at least they got Matt Ryan out of it. I’m not a huge Ryan fan, but the Falcons badly needed a QB and they got the best one on the board. But the Raiders passing on Dorsey was just inexcusable. The Raiders have some pretty deep talent at RB in Justin Fargas, Lamont Jordan, and Michael Bush, in addition to Dominic Rhodes. While Rhodes may be aging and Jordan may be on his way out, Fargas and Bush represent future-bright RBs for the Raiders. Not to say that the Raiders should ignore the RB position, but they just invested in a long-term contract for Fargas and let’s just say that for the Raiders, beggars can’t be choosers. I’m all for the Best Player Available argument, except when we’re talking about a team with a plethora of holes and we’re talking about a #4 pick, which will easily fill one of your gaping holes and it will cost you probably over $20 million in guarantees. Forget that McFadden could very well be the second-coming of Reggie Bush. Forget that he carries a loooooot of baggage. Forget that there are major doubts as to whether he can be an every-down back. Even if all those doubts are countered, he’s still playing a position the Raiders would have been fine at with what they already have. Is there really a lot of value-added?

Here’s the more stinging criticism: someone needs to tell Al Davis to wake up and face the reality that his model of team-building isn’t working anymore. Pretty comical that an owner facing a division with three absolutely outstanding running games is spending so much time, money, and attention shoring up the… pass defense? The Chiefs have LJ. The Chargers have LT. The Broncos have… well, any 1,000 yard rusher that runs behind their offensive line. Meanwhile, all 3 teams have average receivers. That’s 6 games where their run defense is at a significant disadvantage because Davis has devoted all his resources to finding cover corners who are apparently supposed to be so great at man-to-man coverage that they can also cover receivers who are… running the ball? Dorsey was the perfect equalizer to the Raiders’ gaping hole in the run defense. Their loss is the Chiefs’ gain.

In the “Go, Go Gadget Arms” Reach Department, the Lions decided to pass up on Brandon Albert because their targeted guy was Gosder Cherilus, an offensive tackle projected to go in the early second round. Nevermind that Brandon Albert and Jeff Otah were graded significantly higher than Cherilus. I realize that we’re not scouts and that we don’t know more than Matt Millen, but then again… oh wait, did I say we don’t know more than Matt Millen? Not such a ridiculous statement after all. Anyway, the Albert pick is perfect for the Chiefs. The Chiefs can experiment with him at left tackle during the rebuild years and if he pans out, they got a steal. If he doesn’t pan out, then they move him to guard, where most scouts believe he has pro bowl potential.

Second Round

Once again, other teams’ stupidity is the Chiefs’ gain. Brandon Flowers is the classic example of scouts flipping out because they didn’t like the number that showed up on their stopwatch. It’s interesting that concerns about his speed didn’t really surface until after his combine workout. Flowers reminds me a lot of Troy Vincent–both are unbelievable man corners not because they’re fast, but because they are so disruptive at jamming receivers and can out-think opposing offenses. The other teams can take their marginal corners with 4.3 speed and I’ll happily take the one we got–the one who knows how to play the game.

    Right.
First off - draft like ya got a pair. Glen Dorsey will be a good player and so will Brandon….zzzzzzzzzzzzz……..zzzzz…
Have some guts, draft the potential HOF’er the game changer, its called a a gamble, a risk, high risk high reward. Thats why you Chefs are consistently mediocre.
Get used to these truths -
L.J. is a high mileage fruitcake & you have sooooooooo many holes to fill. The Chefs are one of the least talented teams in the game today .
    Stoopid is Losing Jared Allen
    L.T. is in decline
    Denver is in decline.
Draft with balls and make a run.
Big Al is loadin up and the Raiders will own this division again.

Good luck and enjoy the Brodie Croyle Era.

The Raiders will never win the division as long as Al Davis is there. So don’t even think about it.
Russell was a one year wonder in college and will end up a 300+ pound bust. You lock up fargas with a lot of guaranteed money, now lets go out and spend more guaranteed money on McFadden.
Finally, there was 0 market for Javon Walker, you could have signed him for a jar of peanuts but instead lets throw around a ton of guaranteed money for a player more fragile than a porcelain doll.
Don’t come out and rip the chiefs out of sheer jealousy. When all is said and done the perrenial pro bowler and the franchise changing player is the one that fell to 5, not the upright runner who will get 15 carries a game in a crowded backfield.
You say that LJ is soft, well great b/c kolby smith proved himself and Jamal Charles will be a great spot runner. You build a team from the Lines out and thats what the chiefs made a step in doing with the draft.
    Raiders are a sinking ship.
    Goodnight.

    Ryan respectively,

If the Raiders drafted Dorsey after already commiting the type of coin to Kelly than you would have bashed Davis for taking Dorsey instead of Dmax.

Jordan-Chronic back problems, will be relaeased
Rhodes-31+ yrs, DUI-suspended 4 games last year has 1 year left if he is even on the opening day roster. after re structuing his contract, he is more tradeable
Bush- who knows what he can do PUP list (07)
Fargas-injury proned and inconsistent/ only 1 run with 20+ yards and poor ball catcher.

I love how you BASH Davis with as much passion as you do.
It’s not like Carl “we’ll be good one day, I promise” Peterson has accomplished anything.
Bang on the unorthodox ways of the Raiders as much as you want but the Chiefs haven’t figured out the key to success either. I’ve read your comments or Ryan’s about competing for the playoffs in 2009. That would only be a dryspell between playoff wins of oh say 16 years (IF they win).

I am not saying that Oakland’s line is not a priority because it’s obviously an issue but let’s flip the script. Carl ” I’m more focused on team revenue than winning” just traded pro bowl DE allen for albert and a RB??? I see the need for tackle but based on you ripping Oaktown for drafting an RB would it be reasonable to say that maybe old Carl should have focused on a different need with (and I’ll use your phrase) “deep talent” at RB LJ and Kolby Smith.

Great article for debate but before you label any team “Stupid” for passing on players maybe you should focus on the team you’re writing for….

    AJ-

Glad you brought up division titles, (I’ve mentioned this before but it’s just a fun stat) I am sure you know of course being a devout Chief fan that you have exactly as many AFC West division Titles as the Seahawks do in the last 10 or 11 years (1).

J walker was coveted by Dallas and Phil. We went over this months ago when this wasn’t old news.

No one is arguing that the Raiders had to overpay for for marquee FAs.
Everyone agreed that Fargas’s contract was of market value and reasonable with the increase in salary cap. He only got $12 mill guaranteed not a “ton”.

AJ, how old are you? 4?
The Raiders won the west 3 times in a row this decade.
The Raiders played in two AfC Title games this decade.
The Raiders went to the Super Bowl this decade.
Let me explain something to you - the NFL is cyclical, you load up, you make your run for as long as you can and then you re-load or rebuild.
The Chefs haven’t won a game since October. You’re going the wrong way.
Three wins out of you jokers would be a great season for you.
Somewhere Dick Vermeil is still crying.
Somewhere Herm Edwards is trying to figure out how he ended up with the Croyle/Huard fiasco.
Enjoy 08. We will Own you.

As an impartial NYG fan I found this article a very good read. The Raiders as in serious trouble with their draft and FA style. Al Davis is enamoured with size and speed not football players. The Chiefs did nice work in this draft by drafting football players, not workout warriors. The Chiefs should aim for 2010 as their “run”. Could be players in the AFC.

PS Get rid of LJ, NYG fans know diva running backs and they arent worth it. Young guys (kolby smith) will give you more than LJ.

Martini I think you’ve had a few too many martinis.
Name one thing right now that makes you think the Raiders will be good anytime soon.
Overpaid for an injury prone receiver and an overrated corner. Check. An owner that cares more about flash and putting bodies in seats than winning games. check. A defense comprised of overpaid free agents and no run blocking presence. Check. An overpaid #1 draft pick qb that will not amount to anything. Check.
Why are you so hell bent that they are moving in the right direction. Only direction they are moving towards is the salary cap limit. Do you think they can just cut rhodes or jordan without susbstantial cap hits. When the dust settles you just have an average team.
Now about dominating the chiefs, I do believe you one the first game in how many years vs the chiefs the winter? You should know the answer.
I think Carl Peterson is a horrible gm, yes I do.
But this team is going in the right direction. Makings of what should be a solid D line, a beaslty LB core, Two young underrated safeties, Flowers at CB.
Rebuilding the O-line, solid trio at rb, best rookie wr from last season, best TE of all-time, and a young qb who hasn’t gotten a chance yet with no protection.
    give the kids a chance.

Good post, Impartial. Look at the big picture here. The Chiefs aren’t stocking up for a “run”. We’re building the team to be an every-year force like the Colts.

We’ve gone the other route and you’ve all seen where it got us - nowhere. I think we can all agree on that. Trying to patch holes and grab a few superstars doesn’t work. Building a TEAM does. We are finally (after screwing around for 20-30 years) doing this right.

Also, I’d have to agree about the RB thing. Hopefully they learned their lesson with LJ.

Curiousglll - good info as always. The rest of the league views the backfield in Oakland as “stocked”. Maybe that isn’t the case.

hahah typical raider haters.. while i agree with you all about al, he is off his rocker 99% of the time, the man needs to step down off his throne of bone.

THE REASON why they passed up on dorsey was because 1. he’s sustained back annd leg injuries. 2. they already have poured way too much $ this year on defense.

yes they need to stop the run no doubt.. but YOU STOP THE RUN BY SCORING TOUCHDOWNS. IF YOU ALL THINK RUN DMC ISNT A PETERSON TYPE ALTHLETE THEN YOU ARE ALL TRULY JEALOUS. dorsey is going to be the raiders nightmare for years to come.? THEY WONT KNOW HOW TO HANDLE THE MANIAC DMAC … hes an all purpose threat that’ll stiff arm you into the grass.
OPTION: slot receiver/wideout/pass rush/pass block/ sweep left/sweep right/THE MAN EVEN HAS 7 PASSING TOUCHDOWNS GO LOOK IT UP.

If you stupid chiefs fans think that he’s not going to improve the raiders team as a whole then I CANT WAIT FOR YOU ALL TO EAT YER WORDS.

one more thing… aj yer straight stupid for judging russell AFTER STARTING ONE GAME. i was there… the TD he threw to porter, it was a beautiful cannon shot, go look it up on nfl.com, if that’s not a glimpse of what’s to come i dont know what is.

  16. Jon says:

    April 28th, 2008 at 2:57 pm

Ok, first, let me point out that I’m not a typical Raider Hater. I personally think the Raiders were doing a great job at building their team when Lane Kiffin took over, but I see the same disastrous fate in 2008 after Al Davis decided to take the keys once again. I’m sorry to say it, but you have a terrific head coach and an owner who needs to just butt out.

There are several different moves the Raiders could have made. The first is to go for Dorsey–whereas Oakland has talent at RB, they don’t have talent at DT. They have players who are consistently average and more often than not underperform. If not DT, they should have traded down with New Orleans, used the 10th on Clady or Albert, and they would end up with a second round pick, which they didn’t have this year. So would you take McFadden? Or take the lineman you need more PLUS a second rounder PLUS a first rounder next year?

I’m sorry, but the McFadden to Peterson comparison, I just don’t buy. He’s more of a Reggie Bush player and he clearly has not proven to be even worth a top 10 pick to this point. I don’t know if he can take a 20-25 carry load. He can’t hold on to the ball. And as Reggie very, very quickly found out, speed is nice, but you can’t win games by trying to out-sprint everybody. McFadden will undoubtedly make your football team better, but how much? The Raiders were already pretty good at RB. They could stand to get a whole lot better a lot of other positions.

I don’t mean for this to be an open criticism for the Raiders. I actually really like Kiffin. But this move reeks of Al Davis and, much like Carl Peterson, has lost his touch.

  17. Scott says:

    April 28th, 2008 at 5:16 pm

Very true. There is one glaring similarity between the Chiefs and Raiders: Idiocy in the front office (ie Al Davis and Carl Peterson).

The difference is that CP has finally outlived his welcome. It seems that Clark Hunt has effectively taken away most of his power. The only reason he was allowed to retain his job to the end of his contract is because Hunt didn’t want a new GM coming in and screwing up Herm’s rebuilding plan.

Al Davis, on the other hand, doesn’t have to worry about job security. He continues to grow more senile every year (much to the delight of the rest of the division) and will probably stick around until he dies.

Cheers to Al Davis. May he continue to run the Faders into the ground for another glorious 20 years or so.

Man I love Chief fans. Although I despise the Broncos, I at least enjoy the passion of the fans in KC. I really do like how some of you have written of JaMarcus Russell already. The kid is just starting out. Peyton Manning was excellent his first year right? Come on.

Now onto Jon- You have got to be kidding me? You have missed some key points. Yes the Raiders love speed, but look at the Raiders pick from this perspective:

Lamont Jordan- Injury prone and still not proven (notice how many teams have been going after him this off season-0).

Dominic Rhodes- Al Davis’s next Larry Brown of Dallas Fame

    This leaves-
    Michael (we’ll see) Bush
Justin Fargas((Oops I hurt it again)
    Darren McFadden

Does there pick still seem stupid considering the OL lead them to #6 in rushing last year. Still not adding up? Try this too:

The defense has improved to the point that any Chief fan can not say with any honesty that the thought of throwing against Nnamdi Asomugha and DeAngelo Hall worries them. Throw into the mix the safety Gabril Wilson who has more tackles as a strong safety than any other at that position over the past four years and suddenly you have more options. This “could” allow the Raiders to put more in the box to help against the LJ’s and LT’s”

Glenn (No one knows for sure yet) Dorsey plays the same position as Tommy (PLEASE don’t let us down) Kelly. The team obviously has faith. Yes there are unknowns like William (I was great in college) Joseph from the Giants and Kalimba (Who?) Edwards, but they are expected to create an exciting camp while fighting for a starting job. The Raiders linebackers are solid and continue to improve.

The Chargers all still a cut above, but Oakland is closing in…Thank you Norv Turner! Later Ya’ll

  19. Jon Yoon says:

    April 29th, 2008 at 3:36 pm

WSac Raider, all good points, but realize that teams put 8 in the box against LT and LJ all the time, and Denver as well. These are guys that run real well in spite of 8-9 man fronts, so you have to do more than throw a bunch of guys in the box to stop them. Also realize that Bowe, Brandon Marshall, and Vincent Jackson aren’t exactly players that teams really double team much anyway.

The truth is, your defensive line only seemed to be effective when Warren Sapp was there. It’s no coincidence that Sapp had 10 sacks the season the Raiders excelled on defense. I would argue that Sapp was a pretty big difference-maker on defense.

The Raiders could have improved their offensive line AND gotten two more first day picks. They could have gotten the tackle who could have replaced Warren Sapp. Instead, they chose to go for the home run hitter. As I’ve said before, this is a pretty typical Al Davis move and I think it’s a huge shame, because I don’t think this is a Lane Kiffin move and I think this team did a complete 180 last year when Kiffin took control of the team. My only hope for your team is that Kiffin outlasts Davis and you can all build teams the way they were meant to be built instead of this Disneyland version that Davis has resorted to.

  20. Don says:

    April 29th, 2008 at 4:10 pm

    Just some clarification on DMac…

He is nothing like Reggie Bush in any way save speed and hands. Look up his highlights. He runs over linebackers. He stiff arms safties into the dirt. Not just scubbs either. He did it to many of the guys taken in the first round of this draft. He did it to guys that are starters in the Leauge. When he can’t make the edge he punishes the tackler. He plays injured. He’s everything Raiders’ fans have been waiting for.

Not worth a top ten pick? Eh, maybe not to you. But how many two time Doak Walker winners, two time Heisman Finalists, two time first team AP All American, three time first team All SEC, and ALL TIME leader in SEC all purpose yardage after only three years would you say isn’t worth a top ten pick? Yea, probably only the ones drafted by the Raiders, right?

Dorsey is a great player that had an amazing year on a great team…that was beaten just about single handedly by Darren McFadden.

  21. WSacRaider says:

    April 29th, 2008 at 7:22 pm

Jon- Point well taken, however it is crazy to compare Dorsey to Sapp, at least at this point.

The offensive line also improved with the addition of Kwame Harris. Tom Cable is the reason for the turn around of the Raiders run offense and will serve to make Harris into a stud this year. Not to mention the improvements by others going into their second year with this system.

Lets face it, the Raiders needed help in a lot of areas, so do the Chiefs though. KC and the rest of the AFC West will not have a free pass anymore when playing Oakland.

The pick up of McFadden I still think was a good one that will play out year after year. Stupidity would have been selecting a QB with the number 4 pick, not a running back that the Chief fans will be hating more and more each year.

To call the Raiders Disneyland is kinda funny though considering that as bad as we were last year the Raiders still scalped the Chiefs in KC. The Raiders have done considerable to improve this offseason while KC has done little.

2 to 3 years before the Chiefs draft will show any true value whereas the Raiders march began this year even prior to the draft.

The chargers are by far the best team in AFC west and I’m a diehard chiefs fan

These teams from best to worst improved in the draft

    1. Raiders
They got Darren Mcfadden he is better then Adrian Peterson. Mcfadden had a monster game against LSU with Glenn Dorsey. Then the raiders got Deangelo Hall.

    2. Kansas City Chiefs
They got the most unproven talent out of any team in the draft. They got glenn dorsey Who I think will be very good for years to come. They got brandon Albert hes a Guard and could turn out to be the best OT out of this years draft. They got Brandon Flowers plays much faster then he ran at the combine and if he would ahve ran faster he could have gone in the middle of the first round. I think the chiefs didnt do one thing which would have been great trade Larry Johnson for a couple of 2nd round picks

    3. San Diego Chargers
They got Antonieo Cason who will play the nickel corner for the first year adn then they got joacob hester who i consider a Hback or a change of pace back. they didnt have a lot to work with and htey had very few needs so the best just got better.

    4. Denver Broncos
I dont know what they were thinking when they drafted Ryan Clady hes raw and Jeff otah is an a mazing run blocker. I think they took althetism over amazing run blocking. Then Eddie Royal in the secound round I think the chiefs pick in the fourth round is better then this guy he will never be better then the 3rd wide reciever
