Tony Gonzalez is a Hero - What Would The Rest Of The AFC West Have Done?
Most of you now know that Chiefs’ tight end Tony Gonzalez saved a man’s life last Thursday. Gonzalez gave a man who was choking the Heimlich maneuver, which dislodged a piece of meat that had gotten stuck in the man’s throat.
“Tony saved my life. There’s no doubt,” Ken Hunter, a shipping company manager from Huntington Beach, CA, said. “I tried to take a drink of water, but I couldn’t swallow. Then I couldn’t breathe. That’s a terrible feeling. I couldn’t breathe. Then I guess I started to panic.”
Gonzalez said he isn’t trained in CPR - he just reacted when he heard Hunter’s companion shouting from the next table.
“She was screaming, ‘He can’t breathe, he can’t breathe,’” Gonzalez said by phone from California, where he lives in the offseason. “The whole restaurant was quiet. Nobody was doing anything. Then I saw he was turning blue. Everybody in the restaurant was just kind of sitting there wide-eyed.”
“I had seen (the Heimlich maneuver) done, so I just did it,” Gonzalez said. “When you find yourself in those situations where you have to take action in a crucial situation, you just do it. I got the same feeling I get when I go on a hospital visit.”
So, not only is the man the best tight end in the history of the NFL, he’s a guardian angel as well. Gonzalez has always been known as a class act in the NFL, and he has been involved in charitable work since he was drafted. I’ve had the good fortune of meeting him twice, and he’s always been a down-to-earth guy who seems to appreciate talking to fans.
I also thought about how the other stars of the AFC West would have reacted had they been placed in a similar situation. You see, Hunter is a San Diego Chargers fan, but that didn’t stop Tony G. from doing the right thing. I wonder what would have happened if the situation had involved…
Javon Walker - Oakland Raiders- After spraying multiple $500 bottles of champagne on Hunter, Walker would have rained $100 bills over the choking man, encouraging him to get up. After he was unsuccessful, Walker would have blamed the man’s misfortune on the team…er…restaurant not understanding him and having a beef. Then the kitchen staff would pummel him out back and take his bling.
Brandon Marshall - Denver Broncos - Probably would have stood up to help Hunter, then slipped and fallen through a table, severing arteries in his arms and legs. Afterwards, Marshall would claim he was pushed through a plate glass window while trying to save the choking Hunter.
LaDanian Tomlinson - San Diego - Would have stood next to Hunter wearing his helmet and winter coat, not doing anything.
Thanks for being a great guy, Tony G. You’re a credit not only to the Chiefs, but to the NFL as a whole.

Best of all, when the Chargers fan, Hunter, was asked what he would think if the Chargers were up by 5 on the last play of the game and Tony ran into the endzone and jumped to catch what would be a game-winning TD for the Chiefs. He said he would root for Tony to catch it…I guess I’d probably root for the guy who saved my life over my favorite team…maybe…

Nope I would have yelled “Rip his head off” Just cuz he saved my life doesn’t mean he gets to beat up on my team! But thanks anyway!

This is the stupidest article yet… How do you joke with things like that? The man could’ve died… How is this crap funny…
GO RAIDERS!!!

I thought it was humorus…..the fact is he didn’t die and its fun to pick on divison rivals… good post Ryan….Pat T if its so dumb why do you read it ….nobody is putting a gun to your head…..all your trying to do is instigate or cause problems….lol

Or voice an opinion, which is what the blogs are for…or something like that…this is the type of article that will keep the blogs separate from the “real news” though.
In that it’s not funny, and doesn’t add anything of substance what so ever.

Never claimed Tony G was anything but a class act…
I have to admit, I laughed really hard on this one…

Brodie Croyle: would have gone and given the Heimlich to the wrong person, or gotten sacked right after he got out of his chair.
Jared Allen: would go give the Heimlich to a richer guy in Minnesota.
Lary Johnson: would have gotten injured halfway to the man’s table.
Patrick Surtain: would try to help, but would get beaten to the table by anyone else in the league.
Herm Edwards: would go over and yell at the guy, “You Chew, To EAT, THE STEAK!” (go, I love Herm)
Chiefs fans: would love to help, but they’re not allowed to stand up.

Now THAT was funny, Spokane - I loved the Herm and the Chiefs’ fans one. Actually - they were all pretty good.
Nice work!

Wow!!! this is so dumb and biased. You don’t know what any of these players would have done. Tony G is not the Only good person in the AFC West. Stop being so biased and write good articles. First of all, any one would help a person choking, are you seriously telling me that these NFL players would not help, you are so very ignorant. It was very good what Tony G did, but don’t bash other players trying to compare them to Tony. Oh yeah and for the Record just because Brandon Marshall gets in his trouble does not mean he does not contribute in his community, he helps kids and goes to there football camps, so write about something positive next time.
BRONCOS FOR LIFE!!!!!
July 9th, 2008 at 9:18 am
Where are the charger fans?
Spokane by far had the best lines.

Brendon -
Biased? On a website dedicated to the Kansas City Chiefs? Man - I should be ashamed of myself.
Next time, I’ll go a little heavier on the sarcasm font, too - hopefully that will help you in the future.
Thanks for reading!

still, I ain’t trying to be negative or nothing but write about what Tony G did, if it’s a Kansas City Chiefs article write about them, don’t compare him to other players, especially when its about players in the AFC West. You are just asking for people to argue, it was not necessary to include other players around the league. This was about Tony G not B-Marsh, LT, or Walker. It is kind of ignorant for a writer to bash other players for no reason, sarcasm or not, this is about Tony G saving a life. I KNOW ITS SARCASTIC!!! But still the Chiefs are the last group in the Afc west to be an actual factor

“But still the Chiefs are the last group in the Afc west to be an actual factor”
I’ve been trying to puzzle out what this has to do with anything regarding the story - and I’m still at a loss. Can someone help me out?

Haha, I’m still wondering what the abortion of a joke had to do with the story too. You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours…no homo.

Ian first of all i read the title of the article and i found it intriguing so i started reading and i read until right before the Javon Walker paragraph and thats why i left the comment… But Ian just like you said dude if you dont like my comment than dont read it… No one is here to start problems… When Ryan has written a good article i’ve complemented him on it… So dude if you dont like my comment, well too bad… Suck it up…
GO RAIDERS!!!
July 9th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Walker is a bronco, no offical raiders games yet. How about Darren Mcfadden haha, Tony G, is a great tight end, great guy, all american, but this might be him helping the chiefs for the long fall and winter coming for them, Raiders for life, people need to save themselves.
July 10th, 2008 at 2:57 am
this whole article was a joke….Ryan wasn’t serious for those of you who thought that is what he thought they would do you are mentally challeged…..and not everyone would help in that situation, Tony G said himself no one was helping they were in shock…so why don’t you guys read before you post
July 10th, 2008 at 6:33 am
Ian -
Thank you for clarifying that for everyone. I thought it was somewhat obvious that I was being a little sarcastic/humorous… maybe I shouldn’t be so subtle next time, huh?
Thanks for reading, guys!

Ryan i know you didn’t mean any harm or disrespect to anyone with your article… Its just something i dont think you joke with… While Tony is a great player & person, i still feel like most people in their right mind would try and help someone(if they can)… Oh… By the way Ian stop sucking up… lol…
GO RAIDERS!!!

Brendon must be an insecure querre. the article was very funny. i guess when your team sucks as bad as the broncos you take offense easily. realize these suckers are getting paid millions to play a kids game. they can handle a little crap.
go raiders!!! time to show up for once
July 11th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
i think you meant queer becasue if you didn’t that was retarded what you just said but Pat T……shut up….i don’t give a damn what you think….Im just sick of Raider fans in particular coming in here and blowing things out of proportion……i like reading these comments i just don’t like reading ignorant comments from people who are only on here to talk shit or start something
July 11th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
anyways I do disagree with your opinion about Lt even though it was a joke…..I think LT is a stand up guy who may be a little bit of a whiner but other than that he is a good guy and i like him…..being a chiefs fan it hurts me to say that he is by far the best back in the AFC west but he is hands down
July 11th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Ian who the hell are you to correct someones spelling? “thakns”… You are truly an idiot.. And to whomever may be interested in seeing how much of an idiot Ian is i ask you to go to the link below and read some of Ian’s comments… Like “pat T lives in his moms basement”
http://mvn.com/nfl-chiefs/2008/06/27/afc-west-breakdown-punter/
Boy its about that time when you man up and stop bitching everytime i say something to you(Grow some balls)… You have no clue about football, you literarly talk out of your ass… Have you noticed your the only idiot who stresses about my comments? Hell your fellow Chiefs fans have ridiculed you(Ryan in the link above)… You have one and one purpose only and it is to make me and others laugh at you and your comments… Other than that your pretty much useless… “thakns” for reading my comment… hahaha! Im going to give you your new job, ok Ian… Your the Chiefs blog clown/bitch…
GO RAIDERS!!!
July 11th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
That put up a good, few laughs, Ryan!
Spokaneoakfan,
That was hilarious!
July 13th, 2008 at 11:30 am
I laughed so hard my stomach hurt. Spokenoak had some hilarious additions as well. People need to lighten up. Blogs are here so we as savvy football fans (in most cases) can vent to each other our opinions. They are here more for entertainment value than to participate in actual journalism.
About LT, he is one of the best backs of all time. He needs to get it done in the postseason though. The image of him on the bench with his helmet and winter coat on not doing anything reminds me of my boy Larry at Indy a couple of years back; looked like he would rather be fishing…..
July 14th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
Yeah I agree LT does have to do something in the playoffs but i really think he will at least get to a superbowl by the time his career is over if not win one……The Chargers are IMO a top 5 team and could really make a run for it this year…..even though i would hate that so much…..lol
July 14th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
Pat T when was the last time you actually talked about football……all you do is diss articles and make fun of me…..your right i made some typing erros and that was my bad…..my bad for making fun of people and there errors…..lets just talk football….and forget about it….. okay?
July 14th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
