Vernon Gholston Signs - What Does This Mean For The Kansas City Chiefs?
The New York Jets signed their 1st-round pick (6th overall) Vernon Gholston today to a five year contract. The terms include $21 million in guaranteed money, and with all the incentives, could reach as much as $50 million.
So now the top four picks have signed, and the #6 pick has signed…guess who is very conspicuous by his absence? That’s right - Mr. #5 overall pick, the Chiefs defensive cornerstone, Glen Dorsey!
Seriously, though - this should be viewed as good news for Chiefs’ fans. 13 of the 31 first-round picks have now signed (as of this writing), and 6 of the top 10 are under contract. But now the Chiefs and Dorsey have a very clear window as to what the #5 pick should make, sandwiched between #4 overall Darren McFadden (6 years, $60 million, $26 million guaranteed) and Gholston.
There is no reason for Dorsey to not be in camp by the end of the weekend. He should get offered somewhere in between 5-6 years for $55 million, $20-$25 million guaranteed. This is actually pretty close to what I predicted a couple of weeks ago. Hmmm…maybe I should be the Chiefs’ General Manager after all.
So once again, the New York Jets do us a favor. They beat us in the last game of the season to give us better draft position. They didn’t trade us Chad Pennington and Lavaurneus Coles. Now they may help the future of the Chiefs’ defense get to camp at least a little ahead of schedule. Thank you, New York.
(If Herm doesn’t work out, can we get a refund?)

The biggest reason for the hold up appears to be that several agents representing top tier picks are unhappy about the “drop off” in guaranteed money that Oakland paid for DMC. Basically, they don’t want to see that trend continue and so those agents are sitting around waiting to see to what “the other guy” gets first because they don’t to be embarrassed by anybody that signs after them. Right now it is about agent egos and reputations.
The Gholston signing helps but I really believe Joel Segal, (who last season represented 2 other notable hold-outs - Levi Brown & JaMarcus Russell) is going do everything he can to stick it to the Chiefs and will use every excuse in the book to delay signing. Not a promising scenario given King Carl’s own M.O. To make matters worse, the N.O. Times Picayune is reporting that the their top 10 pick, DT Sedrick Ellis, is officially a hold out to the extent that they’re already resigning themselves to the likelihood that he may not sign until just before the regular season starts.
None of this bodes well I’m afraid and so I hope that Dorsey is more about business of playing football than about making his agent look good. The best thing that could happen right now is for Dorsey to tell Segal to get him the best deal he can within the week or he’ll go out find somebody who can.
If Dorsey ends up holding out for most of the pre-season, then maybe Tank will be inspired enough to win the DT job straight out and make Dorseys hold-out another chapter in the story of ill-advised negotiation strategies.

Dear Carl Peterson,
I think not signing with Glenn Dorsey is a fine idea.
Sincerely,
Kevin McHale

Double D, do your homework. Jammy Russell is/was not represented by Segal. He is represented by LMM Sports Management.

it means you guys drafted the second best d-lineman this year and he won’t be in camp on time. also he’s undersized for his position in the nfl. i could go on forevever.

Looks like it was all much ado about nothing. Dorsey is reporting to camp on Saturday. All are signed except Merritt. As soon as he can practice he is signed. No point in signing him until then because you have to cut a player. I don’t know if the difference was King Carl, Herm, Clark Hunt or Thurmon. It is time to give the devil his due-at least this year.
