The Cowboy Roundup

Free Agency Sleepwalk

Well, it has been an unusual Cowboy free agency period, to say the least.  But based on over a decade without a playoff win, I think this could be a good thing.  Dallas is coming off a 13 win season and this free agency class is not exactly the cream of the crop.  As Cowboys fans we all know that Jerry is wringing his hands because he wants to get in on the action, but amazingly things have been surprisingly quiet.

Well done, Jerry!  We didn’t think you had it in you.

We addressed the 4 critical free agents that were our top priority:  1)Flozell,  2)MB3,  3)Hamlin,  4)Canty.  Now the one move that we did make was to bring in a Texas native in Zach Thomas.  Jerry certainly has a weakness/strength for bringing in the local guys.  But how can you go wrong with a born-and-bred Texas football player?  I mean seriously.  But getting back to the point, I think we accomplished exactly what we set out to do in this free agency.

Taking in our losses there are really only two worth mentioning….Julius Jones and Jacque Reeves.  Can I please have a show of hands to see who will miss either of these two?  That’s what I thought.  (I still have trouble understanding why we chose to skip over Steven Jackson in 2004 to get Julius in the second round.)  And I honestly feel sorry for the management of the Texans to offer such a deal to Reeves.  Too bad one of our rivals didn’t pick him up.   Sure, we all would’ve liked to see Asante Samuels in our secondary, or Randy Moss flying down our sidelines with a star on his helmet, but given our salary cap situation these moves just weren’t realistic.   All this to say….job well done Cowboys!

Soon we’ll start looking at the draft, and try to predict how the Jones’ will wheel and deal on Selection Saturday.

As a Giants fan I was hoping JJ would persue Moss because I would love the thought of Owens and Moss screaming at their QB that the other got more passes thrown to him and thats just at half time! Well after last year it is proven that it’s all about the draft and not about overpaying in the FA market. Oakland payed $39 milion for our G Wilson. thats why the Raiders win 4-games a year. It should be a great year for the NFC east and hope to see you guys in the playoffs…….

[…] Nate Moore of MVN is happy with what the cowboys have done in free agency. And he points out the idiocy of the Jacques Reeves’ deal. […]

I for one will miss Julius Jones. Yes he appears to have taken a step back since his rookie season but I still think he has gas in the tank and have my fingers crossed he show some of his old spark in Seattle. I certainly will not miss Jacques Reeves. I can’t think of anything significant Reeves ever did for the Cowboys. I am sure he made some plays but I can’t think of any right off hand. I liked the Zach Thomas signing, although I would have liked it 10 years ago. I am not sure the Cowboys will get much out of Thomas., if he can stay healthy, perhaps but I fear a season long injury is on the horizon for Zach this summer.. fingers crossed that I am wrong.
