Wayne Huizenga to sell the Dolphins?
The Miami Herald is reporting that Miami Dolphins owner H. Wayne Huizenga is in talks to sell the team. Billionaire real estate developer Stephen Ross, who recently bought a $32 million mansion in Palm Beach, is reportedly in talks with Huizenga to purchase both the team and Dolphin Stadium.
Huizenga has owned the team sine 1994. A source familiar with the negotiations said that Huizenga has been seriously thinking about selling the team this year. With the Dolphins spiraling towards possibly being the first NFL team to finish a season 0-16, Ross’ offer might entice Huizenga to sell. The reported asking price is $1.1 billion, far exceeding the record $690 million paid by businessman John Henry when he purchased the Boston Red Sox in 2002. But the source was quick to say that Huizenga and Ross are only in talks and that nothing has been agreed, nor has any paper work been involved.
In recent years, a growing number of Dolphins fans have been calling for Huizenga to sell the team. Huizenga has had many offers from several businessmen and companies to purchase the team from him in the past, but only now is he seriously considering selling the club.
In the end, if the Dolphins do finish 0-16, perhaps it’ll be best for everyone if Huizenga did sell the team. This franchise needs to start all over again. It needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. Perhaps a new ownership can breath new life into a floundering, yet once proud, franchise. It seems that the ball is in Huizenga’s court.

There is a plus side to this. At least the 70 win Marlins would have a good chance of getting an extension on their lease at Dolphin Stadium. Ok, so it’s not that much of a plus side.
It’s quite hard to imagine anyone else by Wayne owning the Dolphins. Comes at a pretty strange time, too. He just spent over $200 mil on the stadium’s concourse upgrades. I think there’s something more than 0-16 itching at Wayne here. We’ll know soon.

“In recent years, a strong majority of Dolphins fans have been calling for Huizenga to sell the team.”
Really? Your source for this statement is something which would interest me.

No specific source. Just from what I’ve read on other blogs, blog comments, fan sites, fan forums, AM sports talk radio, etc. Just this season a group of Dolphins fans on the web called for the Dolphins-Bills game to be boycotted to send a message to Huizenga. From what I’ve read and heard, it sounds like a strong majority to me. Anyway, “strong majority” may have been a bit of hyperbole on my part, so I changed the wording.
