Michigan Men: Dolphins add Henne to Long
Pick number 56. Packers on the clock. Bill Parcells is sitting in the War Room, sweating. His QB, Chad Henne, is still on the board. As is QB Brian Brohm. The Dolphins worked Henne out a ton, paying little attention to Brohm. But the Packers seemed to be leaning QB, and most boards had Henne ahead of Brohm.
“With the 56th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select…Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville.”
Parcells smiled, I guarantee it. He may have even whooped, and done a little jig. Miami JUMPED on Henne, ensuring a QB competition in the Fall. I like the move, Henne has a big arm and good leadership. I painfully experienced that last college football season, when Henne led a Michigan team facing a large talent deficit to a beat-down upset of the Florida Gators in the Capital One Bowl. Also, as has been mentioned a thousand times already, Henne and Long played together, so Long knows how Henne operates. I also like it because it doesn’t seem like something Miami would have done before. Prior regimes would stick with Beck come anything. This regime makes sure to secure the position by bringing in another highly touted QB and saying best man wins. Best of all, Miami gets the QB they want without having to trade into the 1st round. By the way, this is the Chris Chambers to San Diego pick. Alex, your thoughts?
Alex: I’ll admit it. I cursed a few times when Green Bay took Brian Brohm, who in my mind was the best QB in this class, right before us. Brohm would’ve been a huge steal but Henne is still a solid late second round choice. He’s got plenty of size and arm strength to spare but he’s not very swift on his feet. If the pocket collapses, he collapses with it. But if Jake Long is as advertised and if Vernon Carey and Ernest Wilford continue to do what they’ve been doing, that won’t be much of a problem.
So when does he get his first NFL start? Considering Henne doesn’t go completely off in camp, I think the incumbent John Beck gets about six games to win Bill Parcells over. If he’s still fumbling snaps and trying to be a hero when a play is clearly dead, he’ll be riding the pine in favor of #7.

You guy are full on suckers. I bet you were the first one saying Beck was the new Marino last year. Beck will get his chance and there is no rush for Henne. Henne wont play a game this year unless Beck breaks his neck.

NAVIN, neither of us outright hailed the move or said Henne was the next Marino. Or Beck, for that matter. We just think it’s a solid move to bring in another QB to push Beck. When Beck was drafted and Trent Green and Cleo Lemon were the other QBs, Beck knew he was THE GUY for the future. With another QB drafted fairly highly, Beck has some real competition.
Hopefully, Henne won’t NEED to play a game this year. Hopefully Beck is the guy and our QB. But it’s good to know there’s another option, and if Beck falters, they WILL put Henne in.
