Jason Taylor traded to Washington
It’s over. Jason Taylor’s prolific offseason saga has finally come to an end. Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer is reporting that the Dolphins have dealt him to the defensive end hungry Washington Redskins for a 2nd round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft and a 6th round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
Not exactly what Parcells & Co. wanted but still a pretty good return for a one year rent-a-player who has been steadily declining since winning the NFL’s Defense Player of the Year award in 2006 and who was hinting at the possibility of sitting out this season. With Taylor gone, the average age on the Dolphins’ defensive front will drop about four and a half years. Rookie Phillip Merling will step in as the anchor on the right side with Matt Roth, who had a great inaugural year as a starter last season. Jason Ferguson and Vonnie Holliday will fill the rest of the four man front. With the potential that line holds, who needed the headache that has become Jason Taylor?
This trade should make the Redskins-Cowboys NFC East rivalry a little more interesting. On September 28, Taylor will play against his former teammate and current brother-in-law Zach Thomas for the first time ever.
Stay tuned to The Phish Tank for more news from training camp throughout the next couple of weeks.

Quite the news to snap us out of our little Summer hibernation, eh Alex?
Two comments.
1) You say Merling will step into Taylor’s spot alongside Roth. Is that to say that you don’t think Porter will start? Miami has much dollars invested in him, so I think they will slot him over to the right and see if he performs. Roth or Merling on the left side.
2) While it is interesting that Taylor and Thomas will “face off” twice a year, it should be noted that they will never actually FACE OFF, seeing as both play defense. But you do know that the two will meet up on the field and thank the good Lord above they aren’t in Miami anymore.

Sean,
I’m still holding out hope that we’ll be able to sell Porter before the season starts. He and the Parcells “no hoodlums” law just don’t go together. Besides, I really like the look of Merling. From what I hear, he’s impressing in camp thus far as well.
