MVN writers mock draft: 21. Washington Redskins - DT Trevor Laws, Notre Dame

NFL

With the 21st pick in the MVN writers’ mock draft, the Washington Redskins select defensive tackle Trevor Laws.

One of the big things that a successful GM can do most every year to ensure that he has one of the best teams is to make sure that every pick is at a position of eventual need, and is a value pick. Unfortunately, the MVN Football writers didn’t leave any value for the Redskins.

In an ideal situation, the Redskins would turn and deal this pick down 5-10 spots–very literally for whatever they could get for it. In this mock however the pick must be used.

My top-notch Hog Heaven scouts, Brian Mulholland and Anthony Brown universally agreed on two things with this pick: 1) It was necessary that the Redskins address one of the lines with this pick, and 2) Trevor Laws is a better prospect than Kentwan Balmer.

We also like Lawrence Jackson, the defensive end from USC, but Defensive Coordinator Greg Blache has stated time and time again that he believes that interior pressure is his defense’s greatest need. That doesn’t mean Jackson wouldn’t have filled a hole nicely on this team, but the Redskins feel that between 35 year old incumbent starter Phillip Daniels, 28 year old Demetric Evans, who is in a contract year, and 25 year old sack specialist Chris Wilson, the Redskins can get away at LE for another season.

It would have been nice to grab the LT of the future in this slot and make him the LG of the present for the time being, but the MVN Football writers pretty much ended any hopes of that happening: Gosder Cherilus is the top lineman available.

So, with all that said, the Redskins are happy to add Trevor Laws, who we feel is an undervalued prospect and belongs at this slot talent-wise, anyway. Though it would have been nice to drop to the top of round two and grab him there, and pick up another pick, Trevor Laws will be the cornerstone of the Redskins’ Defensive Line in the future.

Just the pick I would have made. And just the logic Vinny Cerrato and the Redskins front office will use come draft day.
