Eagles Trade Rumor: Kelly Holcomb to Vikes?
Since the Eagles selected Kevin Kolb in the second round of the draft this spring, Kelly Holcomb has appeared to be the odd man out of the team’s QB situation. The Eagles signed A.J. Feeley to a long-term deal in the winter, and Kolb is pretty much guaranteed to be the third quarterback on the roster this season. Of course, if Feeley gets injured or Donovan McNabb is having health issues during training camp related to his knee surgery, Holcomb, who came over in the Takeo Spikes deal from the Bills, is nice insurance. The best-case scenario is that the veteran QB has some trade value—any trade value—so the Birds don’t just have to release him before the season starts. According to Pro Football Weekly, the Eagles might have a trading partner already lined; the magazine reports that team is talking with the Minnesota Vikings about trading Holcomb for a sixth- or seventh-round pick in next year’s draft (Insider subscription required). As you probably recall, the Vikings are now coached by former Eagles offensive coordinator Brad Childress, who seemingly still has ties to his former employer. Childress has decided to go with Tavaris Jackson as his starting quarterback, but he’s unpolished, and if he struggles, the Vikes will probably want some veteran depth. The deal works for me—especially considering the Kansas City Chiefs only received a fifth-round pick for a starter QB in Trent Green—but the only question is when the trade would be made. Childress would probably want Holcomb sooner rather than later so he can learn the offense, but that leaves the Eagles without Holcomb in their back pocket in case of a serious injury in the preseason.
