Eagles/Giants thoughts and more. . .
Sorry for the recent lack of updates. I meant to get in a prediction of the game but finals have me pretty tied up.
Giants 16 Birds 13
The game was a microcosm of the entire season. As I stated with my 1st post here the only consistency for the Eagles is inconsistency. The opening drive set a tone for the game that the Eagles offense was back and in full force. That turned out to be fools gold. The play-calling went back to its same old frustrating self and the luck was on the Giants side Sunday. A big joke of an offsides call against Philly and a pathetic no call on the 4th down pass interference. That being said who knows if Philly actually converts those chances. They still got back for a 57 yard bomb of a FG attempt that just like the Eagles season was a crowd-teaser.
The Giants need to be commended for really focusing in and bottling up Brian Westbrook minus the first drive and the occasional play here and there. They really bottled him up for the majority of the game. The Eagles WR’s are not capable of getting separation. Trash McNabb all you want but as the TV coverage showed he had nowhere to deliver the ball to.
This loss ended any outside playoff hopes the Eagles had so looking forward what to expect or hope for? Will we see Kolb play at all? I would like to see Kolb get some week 16 or 17 action but Andy Reid is highly unlikely to pull this move out. Does Tony Hunt have a future on the squad? Brent Celek the incumbent at TE or is he not the man? I hate to bring the name up but does Winston Justice have any future in the league or did the 1st Giant game forever doom him? These final three weeks need to answer some questions among our youth.
On a side note Joe Banner gave an endorsement for McNabb in ‘08. Take it for what you will but it’s interesting to see him say he cannot see the team in ‘08 without Reid or McNabb. I’ve been a McNabb supporter since his rookie year but stand by the mutual need for both parties to have a split come this off-season.
On Deck: Tomorrow I’ll give a NFL Playoff Preview. See who I think will make the playoffs in each conference.

Alex, I’m glad you pointed out how McNabb had so very few open receivers to target downfield. We all get so down on Donovan sometimes because we’re losing, but as you pointed out the TV replays showed the truth about how little our QB has to work with downfield….Don’t get me wrong, I am no apologist for McNabb, I can still remember when he had “Steve Sax disease” a few years back and was leading the league in short passes thrown to shoelaces! But all in all, Donovan is not the problem with this team, it’s a bunch of other things which can be fixed by upgrades in the next season— and maybe a little willingness to change and grow new ideas by Coach Reid— and definitely a little more good luck in getting key calls and fortunate bounces of the ball, something we’ve not had much at all this year.

Guys on 950 were saying today that there were guys open. And I love McNabb, but the reality is Curtis had 11 catches in the 2 games Feeley played and like 4 in McNabb’s first game back and 1 was in garbage time. Its odd that Curtis is SO much better with a back up playing.
Having said that, before everyone listens to Rob Cherry and his ilk and jumps off the Ben Franklin - Eagles are one of 5 teams ranked in the top 10 in O and D. The others: Pack, Colts, Pats, Cowboys. Pretty nice company. I’m convinced this team is only a player, maybe two, from being among the elite in the NFC again. Maybe its just a matter of better QB play. Or different QB play.
The reality is taht most of the losses have been by 4 points. All winnable. This feels a little like Reid’s first year, where they didn’t win anything, but lost a lot of close games. Next year things could go in our favor.

“against Philly and a pathetic no call on the 4th down pass interference.”
Could it be that Avant was a full yard short of the First down and his only cance was to get bailed out by the refs??? Maybe if he was smart enough to sit down on his route beyond the marker he would have got that call,But to run it short and then cry for a call was weak but then again the whole Eagles team is weak!

Mike D, even if Avant ran the route short, he still has the “legal” right to attempt to receive the ball, and then turn and run, without a Giant draped all over him and hitting him before the ball touches his hands. The weak part of that play was the ref’s inability to make the right call. Under the rules, neither you, I nor the ref can anticipate what happens after the catch, as in “well, even if he caught it, he wouldn’t have made enough for a 1st down anyway…” Heck, even without the PI call which the Eagles deserved, a reception there would have changed the rest of the game, even if it was just a matter of 9 yards extra field position for the Eagles—which would have really helped in Aker’s field goal attempt later on. You know, if it’s a blatant defensive interference on a catchable ball, you have to call it, even if the score is 72 to 0. That goes for the Giants, too, and if it had happened the other way I would be just as critical of the ref’s non-call in a case like this.

Mike D, the fact the route was short should have nothing to do with a penalty call. Sure it wasn’t a smart play going a yard short but pass interference is just that.

I agree with both of you that PI is PI regardless but still that play tells you everything you need to know about the Eagles pathetic season. 4th and 6 and Avant runs a 5 yard sit down and Mcnabb the Genious throws it to him and then they both cry about the “noncall”.Any team that dumb deserves to be 5-8 and missing the playoffs

Mike D, all else having been said, I have to give you this: You’re right, it was not a good play-call by Reid or McNabb, and yes, we are 5-8 because of not-so-good play at critical points in games, not just because of non-calls or bad breaks.

The Giants have an outside chance of beating Dallas in the playoffs if they meet each other, although the Giants would have to play a lot better game than they played vs. the Eagles. I’d kinda like to see the Giants upset Dallas, if it comes down to that match-up.

The Giants can beat Dallas.
